MARIONSTAR.COM – BREAKING DAWN REVIEW

Posted October 24th, 2008 By: 29 Comments »

MarionStar.com Breaking Dawn review.

Breaking Dawn, by Stephenie Meyer, has been eagerly awaited by all fans of the Twilight saga. It was given publicity well ahead of its release date, adding to the anticipation and speculation of its contents. There were so many avenues that Stephenie Meyer could have gone down when writing this book. She went down some that were, well, predictable. But that did not deter me from reading on.
That being said, the writing was not the best. It is definitely a league of its own, though. Written with immense description that gets a little weighty at times. I still delved in. As a fan of the series I felt compelled to. And while it wasn’t the best thing ever written, a part of me oddly liked it. It was a sort of guilty pleasure reading something that I know is fluff but liking it nonetheless. I think a small part of me died when I realized that I did like it, even though my conscious told me not to. But I read it front to back in a day. I absorbed it, and afterwards felt conflicted. I can not say why part of me likes it, maybe it’s the fondness for the series, or maybe it’s the fondest for the author, or maybe the book wasn’t as horribly written as I think it is (which I doubt). I honestly don’t know why part of me likes it, but the English major in me cringes with horror.

The book left me with the happy ending I desired, but it had the familiar anti-climaticism, the same predictability, the same 600+ pages of fluff, like the previous two books. None were as good bas the first, which I know is in itself predictable, but I mean they went downhill fast with each addition to the series. Yet as a fan of the story I read on. This book in particular left me conflicted than the others because this one was the worst of the series.

The book would fail to stand on its own, of that I am sure. In order to like this book I think you would have to have read the entire series. You would have to believe in the characters Bella and Edward. And you would have to be able to hold onto a suspended disbelief and believe whatever Meyers tells you. If you can do all of the aforementioned, then this book could be for you. If you cannot, then steer clear of this book.

SOURCE

I picked this review because it’s not extremely negative but she didn’t get effusive with praise either. I agree that Stephenie Meyer’s writing is not the best. The story-telling is what I love about the series. Breaking Dawn is not my favorite of the series and I must admit, I might not have finished it if I hadn’t been so in love with Edward and Bella. It’s a bit hard to take in some respects but Breaking Dawn has grown on me. If I had to rank them according to my favorite, it would be 1) Twilight 2) New Moon – I love the emotional roller coaster 3) Breaking Dawn and 4) Eclipse – not a fan of a lot of this one. What do you think of the review? Is it fair? And how would you rank the books according to your favorite?

I actually really liked Breaking Dawn…after Twilight, Breaking Dawn is my next fav. I wasn’t concerned about the technical writing etc…I wanted to be entertained with a good story and that’s what I got.

  • Emilie

    My list
    1) Twilight 2) Breaking Dawn (i don’t care what people say, i loved it!!!) 3) New Moon 4) Eclipse (its a good book but there is a little less stuff happening in this book acording 2 me to be at the top of my list…)

    theres my list!!!

  • Team Switzerland

I actually agree with her last paragraph. If I had read Breaking Dawn and hadn’t read the first three, I really wonder if I’d have wanted to finish it. And don’t get me wrong, I loved Breaking Dawn. But if I had read New Moon or Eclipse on their own, I doubt I would have wanted to read those by themselves either. They are just a continuation of Twilight, so they don’t have much meaning on their own. But the whole fact of the matter is that Breaking Dawn (or New Moon or Eclipse) isn’t intended to be read on it’s own, it’s part of the series.

  • Leann

I’m an English major also and I do agree with a lot of her review. However, I actually really liked Breaking Dawn. Although Stephanie’s not the most prolific writer in history, the woman knows how to tell a story. I tried to put off reading this series for as long as I could…I began reading basically because my friend Morgan bugged me about it and I kept seeing all the swag on Facebook related to Twilight. I wanted to read it so I could make my own assessment. So, going in, I did have the attitude that I might not like the series and that was fine with me because I tend to go against the grain and don’t really read pop-culture fiction. Much to my surprise (and maybe even dismay), I fell in love with the characters and was oddly compelled to finish reading it ALL.

That being said, I would rank the books 1) Twilight, 2) Breaking Dawn, 3) New Moon, and 4) Eclipse. Although at first, I hated New Moon. I’m starting to see the beauty of it now though. Now I can’t WAIT to watch the movie!!!

  • Charlotte

NOT TRUE!! NOT TRUE AT ALL!!!

I just had a good MALE friend of mine read Breaking Dawn BEFORE he read Twilight and he is absolutely hooked! I mean, not only is he a GUY but he read Breaking Dawn FIRST and he’s still addicted. That should say something about Breaking Dawn.

He finished Twilight in about 2 days after devouring BD and I’m sure that New Moon is next on his reading agenda. I just wish that I could tell this to more people.

  • Danielle

I thought Breaking Dawn was good. It wasn’t nearly as great as I had anticipated but it was the happy ending I was hoping for.
If I had to put them in order it’d Be 1) Twilight (of course) 2) Eclipse (what does everyone have against this one?) 3)Breaking Dawn 4)New Moon (I was depressed reading it the whole time)

  • http://www.bluemooncandles.com Lisa

I think it is lame for people to pick on these books being “not well written”. Frankly, lot’s of people don’t read perfect litarature anyway. In fact getting this many people to read anything at all is great!!! It was pefect enough to keep us all rivited (and I’m a 40 year old mom of a 20 year old & a six year old.) So my opinion in not from a smitten teen standpoint…I think these were well written in the fact that they sound real & believable (at least to my imagination they do). We all were on the edge of our seats, they made big $ in sales, so yeah…I can overlook any problem with the writing…just my opinion.
    *Best*

Breaking Dawn is my favorite book…I really liked it because of development of the story and Edward/Bella relationship…and Reneesme was sooooo cute…My list:
    1.Breaking Dawn
    2.Eclipse
    3.Twilight
    4.New Moon

  • Midori

Breaking Dawn was also my favorite because of Edward’s commitment to Bella and the other developments as Bella discovers her special new powers. Renesmee is so adorably irresistable. So, it would be Breaking Dawn, Twilight, Eclipse, then New Moon. Parts of New Moon were depressing, but still good.

  • Ana

I’m sorry but I LOVED Breking Dawn!!!! Everything that we’ve been looking forward to happens (I.e. Edward and Bella getting married, Edward and Bella consumate the marriage, Bella becomes a vampire, come on!) I loved it. This is how I’d rank it.
1.) Twilight, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn (I just can’t choose)
    2.) New Moon

  • happysunshine

I agree with this for the most part. My minor on my B.A. degree was English and I was a bit surprised with the way Breaking Dawn was written. I felt myself struggling in various spots but made it through for the sake of the characters I had grown to love so much. Some of it was predictable and some was not. I was on the fence as far as liking it and not liking it, but I’ve grown to like the book for the clarity of the entire story telling experience.

  • Chey Cullen

My opinion? um… let’s see. when i first read chapter seven of breaking dawn, i was absolutely discusted. did not want to keep reading at all. i had to force myself to read it and not throw it out the window and yell at stephenie. my fantasy for the rest of the book had been shattered. it was horrible. but i read it, and liked it. it was good, but really bad in some places. this is my book liking order

    1)Eclipse + New Moon
    2) Twilight + Breaking Dawn

    they tie for me.

  • Lauren Cullen

Honestly, I pushed off reading Twilight because I thought it was going to be some fluffy teen romance novel and I was going to hate it. I had just finished Harry Potter (I don’t like starting a series until all of the books are out because I read too fast) so I needed something else to quench my reading appetite. I grabbed Twilight since I had seen so much about it thinking that I was going to hate it in the back of my mind. Little did I know I would finish it 2 days. I would have finished it in one but unfortunately I had to work. After that I bought the rest of the series that day and now i’m hooked. I’ve read the series twice. I agree with the fact that Stephanie is not the greatest writer in history but she has a way of sucking you into this alternate universe and everything seems so realistic sometimes you feel like you live in Forks. So even though the writing in and of itself is not the greatest, she has an amazing ability to tell a story that completely sucks you in.

  • Lisa

I think they’re inseperable. The whole story is one you have to move through…they are all important pieces. & Meyer’s storytelling is magical.

  • VanessaC

I LOVED Breaking Dawn… AND Eclipse (I didn’t realize so many ppl had something against Eclipse- that kinda surprized me). My order of liking of the books in the series is as follows:

#1 Breaking Dawn + Eclipse (I can NOT choose between these two which I like better- it was a definite tie the last time I read the series. Maybe when I reread them again, I’ll be able to choose a favorite, but for right now, it’s a definite tie)
#2 Twilight (this book just starts so slowly, that I find it really dragging in comparison to the other books when I reread it, therefore it’s not my favorite)
#3 New Moon (Parts of this book I absolutely LOVE- I mean I love all parts of all the books, but parts of this book I ESPECIALLY love- but it still has to be my least favorite for 2 reasons: a) the pain of Edward leaving is almost as unbearable for me as it is for Bella, so I’m pretty much miserable while reading the whole part of the book when Edward is gone- I get VERY emotionally involved w/the characters in movies and books; I’m the type that cries at least once during almost any movie or book, even the ones that aren’t supposed to be sad- and b) Edward is GONE throughout most of the book, and since he’s my favorite part of the books, him being in this book the least amount of time pretty much automatically makes it my least favorite book).

Note: these are just my opinions/personal preferences, and are not in any way a reflection of the actual quality of any of the novels, or even of what I think of the quality of the novels- this is purely and simply the order in which I enjoy the books, from greatest to least- which of course is very different from which book actually has the best quality. I think that is an important distinction to make, and often ppl seem to confuse the two and thus be overly judgmental, imo.

  • Haine

I think the writer of the review is being quite fair – even somewhat mild. Even though the Twilight series is addictive and I absolutely love it and its fandom, you can’t deny that some parts of it are very badly written. And I think especially in Breaking Dawn the prose was bad (and then I’m not mentioning the kind of… awkward plot and the screwing up of the characters xD).

Anyway, my favorites are, in this order:

    1. New Moon/Eclipse – New Moon I loved for all the parts with Jacob. I loved how Meyer slowly and realistically developed the relationship between Jacob and Bella. However, I love parts of Eclipse too and I think Eclipse is just written better in general. So, it’s a tie.
    2. Twilight – the book that made me love the series. I still love it, though I don’t like it as much as New Moon and Eclipse.
    3. Breaking Dawn – in my opinion the worst book in the series. The plot was badly written, Nessie and the imprinting was just wrong (and I’m not saying that just because I’m a Jacob-fan – it just completely destroyed his personality and the core of his character), it was anti-climatic and the birthing scene was… gruesome. That doesn’t mean I didn’t finish it as soon as I could, though – I kept turning the pages. However, I think the only thing I really liked in the book was Kate/Garrett.

  • Eva

The series is amazing, it only took me four days to read, and I could read them more than once. I think the charm of the series, is the fact that the books don’t stand alone they go together. Breaking Dawn was incredible and would make an excellant movie. The entire Saga was amazing on my favorite books of all time.

  • http://www.yahoo.com Naomi

I love Breaking Dawn! It was amazing. Bella should have been a vampire in New Moon! But New Moon and Eclipse were horrible! Even thought she loved Jacob, she didn’t love him as much as the capacity and love for Edward. Her love was nothing compared to Edward’s. That mutt..I hate Jacob! But Taylor Lautner was and is a good actor!

    1. Twilight- loved it
    2. New Moon-horrible…Edward and Bella needed each other
    3. EclipseBella loves Jacob (mutt!) But not as much as Edward! Thank you!!
    4. Breaking Dawn-shows the percentage of how much they love each other, Renesmee Carlie gets born, and Bella has the ability to make shields! Awesome!!!!!!
She did want to protect everyone. Maybe that’s why she had that power. In New Moon, the Volutri tried to see if they could hurt her, but they couldn’t. Her mind is the shield, but hers is so powerful, that she can also make is physical. Her shield is supposed to be like a rubberband without a spring or a string……….
    Love Twilight and BREAKING DAWN!!!!

  • Erica

I absolutly L-O-V-E the twilight series. I am an avid reader yet before these books, I had never read a series. I read the first three books in three days and could barely function in life until BD was released. My favs are as follows:
#1 Eclipse – I have no idea why so many people hate this book, but I love how Edward tries to make ammends with Bella and I want to strangle Jacob each time he thinks about the broken Bella when Edward left her. My favorite “scene” occurs in this book… when Jacob becomes Bella’s personal space heater, and Edward bears the sight of his mortal enemy embracing his love and even hears Jacob’s mind… how could anyone’s heart not be torn after reading that?
#2 Twilight, Breaking Dawn, New Moon – Twilight is irrestistible, especially towards the end. Breaking Dawn took me on a roller coaster even though I expected many of the turns. And New Moon breaks my heart each time I pick it up, but the end repairs it quite nicely each time.
Emm… I have never had so much love for a fictional story in my life!!!

  • http://www.twilightersanonymous.com sammy

First, I LOVED them all! I think that I liked Breaking Dawn the best because I thought that it had the most suspence and acceptance which I thought that Stephine wrote VERY well. I liked Eclipse it my second favourite even if I thought that it was a little less action in it-(until the end) -then twilight and breaking dawn. I loved twilight (I dont know how it ended up third, it was AMAZING!!) after I read it I had to go out the same second and buy the new moon to see what was going to happen. I think that New moon was the best writen book I think that would be the hardest one to wright but it made me SO sad I wanted to cry, I was kinda upset because Edward was a big part of the story and we didn’t know were he was until the end. It was REALLY REALLY hard to rank these books because they are the BEST BOOKS EVER!!

I find it pretty hilarious that everyone is criticizing SM’s writing abilities. She’s obviously a good enough author to tell a great story, and to keep people coming back for more. I haven’t spent any time analyzing her grammar, but just reading through the books it didn’t even occur to me that she’s not a good writer (and I’m anal retentive).

As far as Breaking Dawn, I loved it. My one and only complaint is that I really wanted more time with Edward and Bella after she became a vampire. I felt like that book had the least amount of time focusing on their relationship, when, for me, that was the draw of the series. I needed more!!! What was their day to day life like? Also, what happened during those first three months (3 months later….. What was that about???). I really wanted to read all the details about their lives and get more information on how she made the transition. Twilight has so many little details, and I thought those were skimmed over in Breaking Dawn.

I’m 28, a step-mom and a mother of 2, and I absolutely love her stories. More importantly, I’m AMAZED that she’s been able to accomplish all of this while raising 3 children and having no experience in being an author.

I was totally enjoying Breaking Dawn right up to the point that Alice waltzed onto the battlefield with the vampire/human hybrid and the battle that we had been preparing for for a third of the book fizzled out. It was almost like the author just got tired of writing and said, “how can I bring this to a quick and tidy end?” Here’s what I would have liked to see: Jacob takes the money and I.D. that Bella went to all the trouble to get, and takes the baby into hiding. The grand battle ensues, and with the help of our heroine, the good guys win. Afterward, the book ends with the Cullens heading off to search for Alice and Jasper and Jacob and Renesme. Then, the FIFTH book in the series begins with the search. Our family is reunited in South America, where they run into the monsterous vampire making his little army of hybrids at the expense of the dead human mothers…

the series is completely awesome just took me 4 days to finish it (could be faster if i don’t have to work) n my list :
    1. breaking down really completes my imagination of bella edward relationship (i’m kind of love happy ending person)
    2. twilight (of course)
    3. eclipse ( it supposed to be the second but since i’m not so the part when bella beg jacob to kiss her….totally mad with that)
    4. new moon hate when edward leave bella ( i do cried when they separated)

  • Ang

I loved this series. When it comes to Breaking Dawn, my first reaction was that the ending felt like a cop-out. That being said, I reread the series (after reading all four books in two days the first time). After my second, third, and fourth go round, I have a greater appreciation for all of the books. Stephanie Meyers really weaves the little details from all of the books together. She’s an extremely gifted storyteller who has enough foresight to plan out her stories. While my first reaction was, “How would they make this book into a movie?” I can’t imagine them making the series without including this one now.

Of course, they would need to make sure the give plenty of time to tell the story, and not omit the little details that give this series its charm.

  • Sunny23

My big beef with this book was Edward and Renesmee’s relationship. He had like NOTHING to do with her. He held her once I think?? And why was Bella so strongly offended about Emmett’s teasing…. they are married… big deal. Don’t all married couples “do it?” Okay she didnt want her dad to hear about it okay, arm wrestle him for that.

  • Mzmj

your definatlii right on that one…*to sunny23* i was so annoyed by the fact that Edward’s relationship with Renesmee didn’t go further into the book… their was no dad & daughter moment…except when he held her just once.. it was UNFAIR.. to edward and to us ( fans) Jacob was also annoying, he got more time with Renesmee then Edward… urrrggghhhhh…! I was hoping to see more Bella and the cullens relationship, together now that she was one of them…!!!!! *sighs* oh well…!

overall, i should say that if i was to put this into ” the best to worst” order…..
    * Twilight= this book pulled me in and never LEt go…!

    * New Moon = Now this one….* sighs* it was just Perfect…. it was heartbreaking and yet it was making us anxious as to how Bella/Edward’s relationship was to work out in the end…. it was a bit tricky to keep reading the book, when all you wanted to do was grab a pillow and scream loud into it…. haha…! Lot’s of rebellious drama going on in this one…(bella’s fault..) bt i loved it….

    * Eclipse- hmmmm… at first i HATED this book…. mainly because Jacob could never leave Bella alone…! urrrgggghhh…. i must admit, that on of the scenes when Jacob becomes Bella’s personal space heater, and Edward bears the sight of his mortal enemy embracing his love and even hears Jacob’s mind… i wanted edward to strangle Jacob……. oooppsss… sorry jacob fans…!!!!
bt since reading Erica’s comment…… i gave this book some thought, and well…when striping away all the annoying, obsessive moments. This book has some merit…
i guess it never would have worked if SM killed Jacob, their wouldn’t be Breakin Dawn….
NOw i believe that it was and is also a great book. what’s a great LOVE story without all the “DRAMA”…..

    * Breaking Dawn- i Loved this one… i just loved this one….!!!! a great End. ( hopefully,it can still be continued…)

All in all people…… I loved all of them…..!NO ” BEST to WORST” order for me…..
hopefully Midnight Sun would come out…. and the rest… cross-fingers…!!!

  • Pam

My favorite was Breaking dawn, because I wanted sooo long for something to happen with Edward and Bella, and I never expected anything like what actually happened in Breaking Dawn. All the books kept me in suspense wanting more, and that is what a good book does for its readers. Thank you Stepanhie Meyer/

    I LOVED Breaking Dawn!
And I don’t understand why people complain about Stephenie’s writing.. 1. She has not much experience, 2. She has said that she is more a story-teller than a writer, and 3. People now adays don’t want to read super-well written books because many find it hard…
The best was Bella becoming a vampire :D
I have hoped for it all aloung, and my worst fear was that she would stay human, or get changed at the last page so we would miss how it turned out.. And Renesmee was so sweet and kind! And in this book, i actually started to really like jacob! (thoguh I HATED him in eclipse). The chapters wrom his side is genious, and the chapters names makes me laugh and smile, like ”Why did I just walk away? Oh right, because I’m an idiot” Haha, so jacob!
And finally Edward and Bella make love, but unfortunately we didn’t get ANY details.. So, just that is a good reason to make it to a movie: Make the love scenes longer!! :) And I think the movie will be great, and I mean.. They CAN’T just stop at Eclipse.. That will be SO wrong. I think there are to choises.. only twilight or all the books in a movie. Well, thats my opinion. And I love that bella get the ability to pretect the people she love, who all have protected her before. But I would like more family time with Edward, Bella and Renesmee, and more private time and dialoges with Edward and Bella.. Can’t get enough of that. But BD is a great book, and I’m so grateful for SM to give it to us :)

her review was right on the money to me, when I first read Breaking Dawn I was somewhat dissapointed, but happy it was at conclusion as well.
By the time I read them all for the 3rd time, with some time in between of course,I liked it more and more,I loved that Bella overcame the obstacles that a typical newborn would have gone through, and it was becasue of her physical glitch that made it easier for her, didn’t St.Meyer get us ready for the fact that Bella may not have the same difficulties? I think that she did, also Bella did have a hard time through the transition, she just shut up about it and took it like a woman, those of us who have had children know exactly what was going through bella’s mind during her change and during childbirth. Enough said!
    My Favs.
#1 Eclipse~fav.scene-on the mountian in the tent!
#2 New Moon~I adore Jacobs part in this book,
    #3 Twilight
    #4 Breaking Dawn
