MTV MOVIES BLOG -Michael Copon, Ben Barnes Or Others? Who Are Your Dream ‘Twilight’ Series Stars?

Sometimes trading is cool, like when I collected baseball cards as a kid and conned my friend into giving me a Don Mattingly rookie card for Dave Sax. Other times, it can be pretty annoying – like in movie sequels where they’ve swapped Keanu Reeves for Jason Patric, Michael Keaton for Val Kilmer, or Jim Carrey for Jamie Kennedy, Steve Carell or anybody else.

Nowadays, a lot of trading, swapping and shuffling is going on in the “Twilight” universe, starting with the director of the hit films. And with the attention now turning to the actors who’ll appear in front of Chris Weitz’s camera, we’ve just published a new report on two hot young stars who might be headlining “New Moon.”

Would Michael Copon be a more-appropriate-looking Jacob Black than Taylor Lautner? Perhaps. But we’ve interviewed the 16-year-old “Taycob” enough times to know that Chris Weitz will never find anyone who feels more passionately about the role. Whether passion equals success is up for debate, but it seems to me that no matter how much more muscular and wolf-like Copon might be, the best he could hope for is a tie.

Will Ben Barnes be the same Aro you’ve dreamt of since the first time you picked up the “New Moon” novel? Again, I welcome you folks to debate it. But all I can say is that “Prince Caspian” showed him to be a pretty talented actor, and I know that lots of Twilighters are also big fans of the 27-year-old Brit, who has said in the past that he would’ve loved to have starred in “Twilight,” but was too old.

On a personal note: A lot of you guys have written to me in the frenzied last week, offering your opinions in favor of a person or against them. Some have tried petitions, others have begun Facebook pages, and most have asked for suggestions on how to make your voices heard.

Well if time has shown us one thing, it’s that Summit and Stephenie and the actors, as well as so many other people involved with the film, follow the “Twilight” news on MTV just as closely as you do. And in this pivotal time of casting, it’s never been more important to make your voice heard.

SOURCE

(thanks hUgz)

Make your voices heard. If MTV is the way to do it, make sure you post there. Summit needs to know what the fans are thinking.

I hope they find and choose actors who are fans of the series. I want to see deep commitment to the part.

Do you think Summit will have a difficult time choosing an actor who is as passionate as Taylor?

YES, I DO think it will be hard to find someone as passionate about the role as Taylor is.

  • shae

Dont change Taylor..but im okay with Aro..lol

JUST DONT change Taylor…you cant just change him

  • Hannah

Taylor Lautner can never be replaced! He is the perfect Jacob! He’s hot, perfect abs. Sure he might look “baby-faced” it’s called make-up, they put it on the Cullen’s to make them look white, can they put make-up on Taylor too? And if they want him taller, put him in high boots/ edit him/ use special effects! It’s not like they’ve never done it before! Or is all the movies just going to be cheap as Twilight! They could’ve done a WAY better job if they spent a little bit more money! Twilight cut so many good parts out, and plus it wasn’t that good! If Taylor Lautner isn’t in New Moon, Eclipse or Breaking Dawn, I’m not seeing them. And I’m not the only one, many other people have the same idea! Taylor is the reason why I read the books, and went to see the movie! And they’re putting Michael Copon in it! He’s the worst person for it! Sure he has great abs! But that’s not enough! He’s ugly! He doesn’t have the kid in him! And he’s not Taylor!
Taylor Lautner is my life! And if I have too I will get a petition with thousands of signatures if I have too! And I will, Michael Copon will NOT be in the movie! No offense to him, but he wont! Taylor will! Those bitches wont take him out if they know whats good for them! They don’t know what I am capable of!

Dont change Jacob! Taylor is the right person to portray Jacob Black, dont be stupid summit!!

  • Ashleigh

    1st opion for summit:
Taylor is the BEST they are gunna find for Jacob
if they change it that is the biggest mistake they
    WILL EVER MAKE!

    2nd:
Ben said he was to old for Twilight.
Well thats just too darn bad.
He is to YOUNG for Aro!!!!!
If he gets that part Imma be so
    P/oed!!
    UGH!

    Thanks for listening.

  • Meli

Oh goodness the whining of the fangirls can be heard from the mountain tops! All of you who are freaking out need to stop, take a deep breath and start thinking with a level head. The whining and threats of not going to see the film if they make this change only make you look like a spoiled little girl crying for their dolly.

The way New Moon is written it makes sense to transition into an older actor post transformation and I’ve always hoped that Summit would make this decision. It is in no way a slight against Taylor who is an excellent Jacob, but he’s simply too young. The agressive time table to shoot this film means they don’t have time (or money) to play around making him look older/taller. I’m not so much hung up on the height as I am his baby face, he is not yet a man, and Jacob grows into a man in New Moon. Taylor will always be Jacob, Bella’s sweet innocent Jacob she often thought about when wishing things hadn’t grown so complicated.

  • Natalie

They just cant change Taylor! He is too good at Jacob!!

  • Carlee

I don’t get what the big deal is. Taylor doesn’t really fit the part anymore. So much happens to Jacob between the first and second books that it just seems ridiculous to do all sorts of computer effects (someone suggested he just wear tall shoes…What the?!?!) just to keep him on. I think he has a lot of passion, which is great, but I think it would just make more sense for them to hire a different actor to play Jacob. Michael Copon looks a lot like Taylor, only older and bigger, so I think he would work out nicely.

  • Samantha

I agree with you guys completely! Michael Copon is NOT Jacob!! Taylor is!! He’s been so excited to do the New Moon movie cuz he had a bigger part and now they’re telling him no? I mean seriously, would it kill them to put a little extra effort in to make him look a little taller(its called camera angles, hello?) and hes getting really pumped for the movie! I heard he told Catherine before she was not doing the movie that he gained 15 pounds of muscle!! And he was all excited about it!! I just feel so bad for him!! Why are they doing this? Oh thats right, cuz all Summit cares about is money. We need to all write letters to Summit or Chris Weitz(cuz online petitions dont work) telling them how we feel about Taylor STAYING as Jacob! Cuz I know if hes not Jacob im not going to see New Moon or any of the others. And Im not gonna be the only one either! TEAM TAYLOR!!!

  • Samantha

DONT CHANGE TAYLOR…HE IS PERFECT FOR THE PART…alot of people will be VERY disappointed if hes not in new moon…

  • sushmom

Taylor Lautner IS Jacob Black. He’s perfect for Jacob, height doesn’t matter. Michael Copon is Filipino and too old. Honestly, would you want Michael or Jacob imprinting on your daughter?

  • Meghan

I said this on another blog I don’t remember where but…
Taylor is such a great Jacob…but at the same time the growth spurt proves to be a problem…I hate changes of character but I don’t have any say.

Ben Barnes should NOT be Aro. He’s too young, and in my opinion not that great an actor. I don’t think he could capture the great depth of Aro. Someone like Alan Rickman who has that creepy haunting air about them but who can also play nice.

  • Megan

I’m with Hannah all the way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Carla

    Wow !!!!
A little crazy there Hannah … don’t you think jajaja . No wonder all the Twilight actors think all their fans are OBSESSIVE fanatics. Honestly as long as the movie gets made… who cares. What I do think they should change is kristen stewarts and roberts pattinsons attitude towards the whole twilight craze. To me it’s like they almost feel bothered by the whole thing with their whole ” I don’t want to be typecasted….blah blah blah” and ” I don’t understand why bella loves Edward ” To some people these books are important …and not because we think Edward is hot … but because it lets us get away from reality for just a bit. It’s something that, sadly to say ,doesn’t exist. The actors are great , don’t get me wrong , and they all looked fantastic , but I just think they need to appreciate their job a little more and stop complaining so much . Man I am a 21 year old mother who goes to school and has a full time job, and still don’t complain as much as them jajaja. So don’t worry so much about who plays in the movie opposed to how they play in the movie !!! And since I am not as mature as I think I will say …. Edward looks flippin gorgeous in the movie , and yes I do know that Robert Pattinson is not the real Edward Cullen !!! But that’s just my opinion !

  • Carlee

Hannah, seriously, simmer down. Life will go on. I promise. Summit’s not trying to play the bad guy, but they have an obligation to stay close to the book, and it doesn’t make sense to keep Taylor on in that case. Jacob just changes too much, so the transition should actually be quite smooth! Also, petitions don’t work. Signitures don’t work. I can’t tell you how sick I am of hearing everybody going crazy and wanting to start petitions and online campaigns. Seriously, grow up. Life will all work out fine regardless of what is done on the movie. I mean, seriously, it’s a movie. I want it to be good, just like the rest of you, but your life doesn’t depend on it. And if it is your life, you need to reconsider your priorities.

  • Megan

they should not replace him..they are never ever going to find anyone better than Taylor.

  • victoria

i have to agree with Hannah they can put makeup on him to make him look more like a werewolf. But if they replace him that will be the dumbest thing they will ever do. they will not find a better actor that is more perfect and dedicated to the role of Jacob as Taylor is. i have been thinking there could be a way they can keep Taylor but also get someone else to play the side of jacob the werewolf. they could have Taylor play Jacob as the human and have another act play the werewolf side that is more mature. Because that is the one thing that Summit is worried about that Taylor is too young looking. Which in my opinion there stupid because jacob is a high school student who is 16 or 17 years old and there thinking of having Michael Copon play a high school kid when he is 26 and does not look anything like he is in high school. I think Summit needs to not think about how much money they will make with the movie, but about what us the fans want. because in the end we can make or break the movie.

  • Trisha

I think Taylor makes a great Jacob…but they do need a more mature-looking Jacob for New Moon. If that means makeup to make him look older, so be it. But if he needs to be replaced, I think Michael Copon is a very good choice. He does look a lot like an older Taylor Lautner. But if it is possible to really make Taylor look 25, then Summit should keep him for the role. But I don’t know if it is possible without him looking stupid since he is only 16. As for Aro, I think Ben Barnes should definitely have the role. He’s a great actor and I know he’d be absolutely perfect for the part!

  • Eryn E.

I’m all about continuity. Changing the crew is one thing, but changing a major character? That’s a whole different thing. Yes, they could have cast a better Jacob but it’s too late now. He’s part of the movie. He just is. I really really hope that they don’t replace him.

  • Debbie

IF JACOB IS REPLACED THEY WILL DEFINITLEY BE LOSING FANS AND IT WOULD BE A STUPID DECISION FOR SUMMIT ENTERTAINMENT, WORKING BEHIND THE SCENES IN THE INDUSTRY, I KNOW THIS FIRST HAND. I LOVE TAYLOR LAUTNER AS WELL AS MY TWO DAUGHTERS! HE IS A STAR! NOT THIS NEW GUY. I HEARD HIS ACTING ISNT UP TO PAR AS WELL…AND IF ANYTHING STEVEN STRAIT IS A WAY BETTER CAST FOR THIS ROLE. I THINK ITLL BE WEIRD THAT JACOB GOES FROM BEING PLAYED BY A 14 YR OLD TO SOME 26 YEAR OLD, YET EVERYONE ELSE IS AROUND THE SAME AGE RANGE, AND THEY DON’T EVEN LOOK ENOUGH ALIKE, LIKE I SAID STEVEN STRAIT IS A BETTER MATCH IF ANYTHING.

  • YR

It will be a HUGE shame if they replace Taylor as Jacob in New Moon. Taylor is the PERFECT Jacob. I know that in New Moon he does some growing but seriously, they need an actor who can still play a high schooler. Who’s Summit trying to fool? Michael Copon can’t play a 16 yr. old kid. Besides, it’s not until Eclipse and Breaking Dawn that Jacob actually looks like an actual grown man. He’ll already be 17 when they start filming New Moon in March. And if they end up making the whole saga, Taylor will probably be near, if not already, in his 20′s by the time they start filming the last movie. Plus, he is SO passionate about his role as Jacob. They won’t ever find ANYONE as dedicated to his part as Taylor is. He is the MOST ideal person for the role of Jacob Black.

  • Katherine

Yes Summit will have a difficult time choosing an actor who is as passionate as Taylor. Taylor seems the perfect guy to play Jacob Black and it can be seen through his acting that he is really passionate to do the film. Summit should keep him as an actor and play Jacob Black. Also, there is already a chemistry between Taylor and Kristen as Jacob and Bella when they became friends in Twilight the movie. So Summit keep Taylor Lautner as your actor for Jacob Black. As everyone previously commented Taylor is PERFECT for Jacob Black.

  • moving2Forks

They should stick with Taylor. Who is going to be buying these tickets? All these crazy fans and they have fallen in love with Taylor.
But definitely do not cast Michael Copon. He has the theatrical range of a bed post. He does not do heartfelt well. I watched him with Sophia Bush for a whole season of OTH and he plays egotistical very well, but not devoted, love-struck, or humble.

  • Kristen

I wish that there was a way that Taylor could remain in New Moon, but I understand that it would be difficult to make him look as much older and bigger as he needs to for the story. I’m sort of indifferent on that one.

I do think that Ben Barnes would make an INCREDIBLE Aro. He’s a great actor, and hey, if he really wants to be a part of the Twilight saga, why not let him? He really proved himself in his role as Prince Caspian, why not see if he’s up to the challenge again?

  • Jaja

sure taylor is baby-faced to be an older Jacob, but do you really believe it couldn’t be done? if the staff can’t do it, then I pity those who hired them.. not so very creative. what are props for? i mean really?

and sure michael is HOT! with abs to boot and all.. physically fit for Jacob BUT he just CAN’T ACT for real! he’s better off as a model. i watch OTH and 2 of Michael’s movies.. seriously, he can’t pull out the right emotions and face.. ARGH!

  • Zoya

Taylor by spirit is the perfect jacob black. there isn’t anyone who could be more like him, but as har as his built is concerned… he has a long way to go. although photography could do wonders and make him look much bigger than he is, i’m not sure how authentic it will be.
as for Ben Barnes as Aro…. yes! yes!yes! Have Ben Barnes play anyone… but have him in the movie for a sizeable part. He’s a fantastic actor and fits into roles so well. I can totally se him as a vampire… fingers crossed, and I hope like hell they have sense enough to take him!

  • bimbim

I have checked michael copon’s images on the internet and though its hard to admit but somehow he could be Jacob Black in New Moon. He has a strong ang large built which is needed for the role(as a warewolf)..BUT… he lacks the sweet, soft and child-like aura that describes Jacob as a human…which is one of the best parts in the story you know whenever Jacob does nice and sweet things for Bella.Taylor Lautner, as how he looks, is the best option they’ve got for the role..He got the best of the two personalities of Jacob Black,..so why change cast right???I do hope that Taylor will be on New Moon. Now about the physical requirements for Jacob Black, Taylor is still 16 and at the peak of his growth and development..Come on!With some gym sessions no time Taylor will become Jacob (minus the warewolf thing of course..)And he’s a SUPERB martial artist(karate)I bet there are some remarkable and well developed muscle group on his body so please consider this idea Summit..Thank you and more power!

  • Luke

WHEN WILL THEY LEARN THAT THEY ARE GOING TO GET BOY COT AND TRAMPLED ON IF THEY REPLACE TAYLOR…… THEY DON’T CARE ABOUT ANYTHING WE SAY IT P**** ME OFF THAT THEY WON’T LISTEN TO ANY OF US…….IF THEY WERE TO REPLACE HIM I WOULD FOR SURE NOT WATCH THE MOVIE.

  • Jade

i can’t believe they will want to replace taylor lautner! is he because he’s too slim? well, don’t they hear taylor talking that he’s going to pack some muscles in one of his interviews? besides, his 5’9″ frame is not too short compared to michael’s 6’1″.. that’s just ridiculous! baby-face taylor? Come on! there is a thing called MAKE-UP! and that’s one of the reasons they hire MAKE-UP ARTIST.

if they are soooooo eager to replace him, at least replace him with a decent actor. michael CAN’T ACT! i would even go with steven strait (the covenant, sku high) instead.

    -Jade

  • Edwardsbrand88

What does it matter if they change Jacob? He wasn’t great in the first movie. He had what, 10 minutes of screen time? And he doesn’t fit into the role in the next movie. Jacob has to grow up and Copon looks like the older version of Jacob. Open minds people. It is a book about fantasy. Be creative.

  • Alisa

I hate when movies replace actors in sequels but in this case, I see it fit. I’m not sure you can really form an accurate argument that Lautner was perfect for Jacob in Twilight because the part was so small. There was no opportunity to solidify that he is perfect for the part. The Jacob transition from Twilight to New Moon makes him seem almost like a totally different person. Therefore I’m in full support of Copon being the new Jacob. I think it would be a good move for the sequel.

  • Carol

What you are all forgetting is that from Twilight to New Moon, Jacob “ages” during his becoming a werewolf growth. Even in the book it says he no longer looks like a 16 year old! So, it just makes sense to have an older actor play him…especially one that looks just like an older version of Taylor Lautner. Michael Copon is perfect since he looks older (Just like Jacob is supposed too)!

  • Breea

I realy think summit will make a huge mistake if they don’t recast Taylor. It’s really sad that this is all based on physical appearance and not on acting ability or dedication to the role. Taylor was on board with this before anyone knew how big it would be. I don’t want and actor who is in it for a big pay day and a boost to their career.

As for the change we see in Jacob, there is enough technology to do this in a way that will not look cheesey. Look at Hagrid in Harry Potter, or the Hobbits in Lord of the Rings. Summit may not of had the budget last go around but as much money as all of us have invested into this they have no excuse. Summit needs to stop being cheap, suck it up and make this movie the way it should be done. If they mess this up they will lose the fanbase which is the only thing making this happen in the first place.

SUMMIT, if you are interested in making money, I would pay attention to what the fans want because that is the only way you are going to keep your head above water.

  • DA

I’m not really big on replacing actors between movies, but in this case I think it is necessary. Personally, I’d like to see Steven Straight in the role, but I also find Michael Copon acceptable.

One thought that crossed my mind is to start out with Taylor for the “before werewolf” change, and move to another actor once he changes. This would give us the best of both worlds, and makeup could be used to make the two actors look more alike. This is my preferred method. Taylor gets to have a large part, but we have a sudden change in him/his body when he becomes a “werewolf.”

Also, I think Ben Barnes would be a good Aro. I could never really picture Aro in my head, but once I think of him in the position, I think it’d fit nicely.

PS: Hannah, I understand that you want the world for your brother (if he is your brother, which I doubt, since his sister’s name is supposedly Makena), but not every person fits the physical description for each part. I’m sure Taylor will have many parts offered to him that will be just as big as Jacob in New Moon, especially now that he has a large and money-spending fan base.

  • Evie Perez

Aro’s fine but PLEASE DONT CHANGE TAYLOR!!! Ive been a fan since the beginning before everyone knew about the books and it will be a huge mistake and I really don’t want it to be those situations where the movies killed the books. Please hear me out!!!

  • Tracy

Summit should really keep Taylor. You could already see the chemistry between him and Kristen in Twilight. You could also already see how different she was with Taylor versus Rob. I don’t think they’ll be able to find someone else that fits that role so well…

As for Aro, I’m totally psyched about Ben Barnes. He’s a cutie and a great actor. He’s not exactly how I pictured him to look, but I think I can deal.

    Team Taylor!

  • Leesie

OK…reasons as to why Taylor SHOULD stay:

    1. Summit, say goodbye to all your fans and all your money, because if you get rid of Taylor, we’ll all be disappointed. Were you cheap with making Jacob look shorter in Twilight (so he would appear taller in the sequel) because you knew there would be no profit in a different Jacob in New Moon?

    2. Actors have passion. Its what makes them REAL! Taylor has a lot of passion for the role of Jacob. It makes it all that much more believable. Taylor acts as if he’s really a Quilleute 16-year-old in love with a taken girl. He makes it so romantic

  • http://twilightersanonymous.com/MTV-MOVIES-BLOG-MICHAEL-COPON-BEN-BARNES-OR-OTHERS.html#respond Twilighter

They really need a more physically mature actor for Jacob. The actor needs to beable to fit the Werewolf persona especially because the book continually describes Jacob’s greater size and his pack of Werewolf friends. Sorry Taylor.

  • Nessie

NO NO NO!!! I LIKE UNCLE JACOB AS TAYLOR. TAYLOR LOOKS LIKE UNCLE JACOB!!

  • Leesie

    3. Jacob is so cute!! Girls go to a lot of movies for the hot guys. And Jacob honestly LOOKS the part! Bella said that he was beautiful… those other guys, not so much!
    4. Can’t Summit just use make-up and lift shoes? seriously! Dancers do!
    5. Jacob is the same age as the audience! We can relate to the story and put ourselves in it. This makes the movies that much more enjoyable! We dont want to watch a 26-year-old werewolf in love with an 18-year-old girl! Jacob is younger and makes the love more complex!
    6. I am not the only one who loves the Twilight Saga! I have posters, backgrounds, and I’m getting Bella’s bracelet for Christmas! What do you think I do to escape school? I read the series! What do you think I do in my free time? I learned Bella’s Lullaby last weekend! Summit will not only lose movie profits, but also merchandise profits! And we dont want to lose our escape, our faith, and our imagination.
So if you lose and we lose…who wins???
P.S. I am NOT the only one who feels this way. All the people who have received and forwarded my messages on aim concerning this issue care too. WE THE PEOPLE have a voice, and now it can be heard!

  • quique

they shouldn’t replace taylor. im not too fond of him but if they insist on replacing him they should switch him & embry/krys

  • Elizabeth

Are you guys kidding me? Taylor should be replaced. First off, in the books he grows quite a lot between books. Second, I’m sorry, but the boy just cant bring the passion required for this role. Sure he has passion about playing the role, Ill give him that… but as far as the talent of infusing passion into a role? .. he just doesn’t have it yet.

  • Brittany

Well i agree with a lot of people and disagree at the same time. I think Taylor did a wonderful job. and i would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see him in New Moon. but if summit decides to replace him. it will suck…but! i’ve seen movies/ tv shows with Michael Copon in them and im no fan. hes not a good actor. so if there going to replace Taylor (which i hope they don’t) they should go for something better not something worse!…sry thats just how i feel.

and as for aro. i dont see ben playing him. i dunno it would be strange. and the whole time id be thinking am i watching twinia. which isnt what i want to be thinking about when im watching new moon. thanks but no thanks.

so i hope they keep Taylor i really do just do something to make him look older. but as i said if they can’t/wont. dont go for Michael Copon. gag! NO THANK YOU!

  • amitiel

Folks, “hot” and “cute” does not equal good acting! Taylor is a better actor, but Copon fits the bill more completely in the end. His acting ability? Well….*meh.* It would be nice if they could incorporate him into the transformation Jacob goes through, but ultimately I think he’ll have to be replaced. Maybe they should keep looking.

My vote for Aro is Jim Caviezel. He’s older than Barnes, with plenty of charisma needed to pull off Aro. Maybe Barnes for Alec if he’d take a smaller role.

  • Betsy

Please keep Taylor!! He is the perfect Taylor! Summit would make a big mistake if they replace him!

  • Amitiel

You know who else would make a good Aro (except for the hair)? Paul Bettany. He carries himself in many roles the way I see Aro in my head. If not Aro, then Caius if he’d take a smaller role. Barnes is still a bad idea.

  • JM05

If they do replace taylor…please dont let it be Michael Copon! Has anyone ever seen him on One Tree Hill? HORRIBLE Actor! Not to mention he was a part of Bring It On… That says it all! So….anyone but him!

  • Bluewolf

*smile* “Taycob” I kinda like that. Taylor all the way, can’t wait to see him dueling words with Nikki in Breaking Dawn. As to Aro I have never been able to fully visualize him, or Marcus and Cius (sp?) So Ben would be a great Aro for me. I have better visualizations of Jane, Alec and Demetrus. Again, pretty much fine with anything at this point, as long as Taycob is back.

    TAYLOR LAUTNER IS JACOB BLACK!

PS I really like the right click thing on this site, wanted to copy a name to google it. Much better than simply disabling the right click.

  • amanda

vanessa hudgens should not replace bella. if she does ill be so upset
