TWILIGHT – BREAKING RECORDS ALREADY

Posted October 18th, 2008 By: Team Switzerland 12 Comments »

Twilight isn’t even out for another month and it is already breaking records. TheStar.com wrote an article about how Twilight fans are insatiable (which I wholeheartedly agree with) and included some very interesting statistics regarding magazine sales, soundtrack sales, and trailer views.

Here are some bits and pieces of what they had to say:

Fans are ravenously consuming the latest online trailer for the hotly anticipated Twilight movie, which doesn’t hit theatres for more than a month. The clip garnered 3.5 million hits within 48 hours of hitting myspace.com/trailerpark last Friday, and that’s not counting how many times it was viewed after a friend emailed it to a friend, who emailed it to another friend. Well, you get the picture.

“It’s every marketer’s dream. It’s truly viral,” says Victor Rego, vice-president of marketing (Quebec), for E1 Films, Twilight’s Canadian distributor.

It’s by far the biggest film the Montreal-based company has been involved with, says Rego, who got a taste of things to come when the first Twilight teaser, released earlier this year, logged 4 million hits on MySpace, surpassing Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Rego said they’re currently working on advanced ticket sales for the Nov. 21 premiere. “The growing aspect of Twilight is phenomenal,” says Rego. “The fans are doing their own things, creating their own merchandise. They are ahead of what we are doing; It’s totally fan-driven. We make them aware of what is going on and then it spreads like wildfire.”

EW’s July issue, with Stewart and Pattinson on the cover, was the magazine’s best-selling cover of the year, outselling Dark Knight and Harry Potter covers, says Rego.

The soundtrack for the film, which doesn’t come out until Nov. 4, is already No. 5 on Amazon.ca’s bestseller list. It features MuteMath, Muse, Linkin Park and exclusive songs written for the movie by Paramore, Perry Ferrell and Pattinson.

It’s really interesting to see all the statistics thus far. I can’t even believe how many times the trailer was viewed on Myspace, since that was even AFTER the trailer had already been leaked online. I’m not shocked that the magazine sales were so high, but I am a little pleasantly surprised that Rob and Kristen’s EW cover beat out HP and DK. Oh Twilighters, we truly are insatiable, we are always wanting more Twilight…

What do you think? Do any of these statistics surprise you?

I’m surprised and not surprised cause I always want to buy more Twilight stuff. As a matter of fact, today I went to Borders because I really wanted to buy some bookmarks from the movie, but everytime I would go there weren’t any. I got lucky today! I got the Edward bookmark, where it’s him solo (there was only two), and the bookmark with the whole cast (which I got the last one). The “embrace” bookmark, which is the main poster of the movie, was GONE. When I went to pay for my bookmarks, the cashier told me as soon as she saw the bookmarks that I was buying, “Oh, my God! These are selling SO fast! I put like three rows of bookmarks up less then a week ago!” She then asked me how much were left and I told her there was only one Edward bookmark left. I got lucky i tell you!

Im not surprised either. Im ecstatic with the actual numbers! It makes me proud to be involved with such a phenomenal series! I think it’s awsome that whoever has the final say on the soundtrack chose to stick with Stephanies rocker chick style, her muse as she wrote it. It fits the films feel, Im glad they didnt go with John Williams on this film or some other composer! Its fine for Harry Potter but not Twilight.

The only thing that surprised me about that article was that the person who wrote it didn’t do enough research on the book itself. “Jacob Smith”…even my husband who refuses to read the books knows it’s Jacob Black.
