TWILIGHT SAGA BOOK CLUB: PORT ANGELES, TWILIGHT CHAPTER 8

We’re back with chapter 8 of The Twilight Saga Book Club. Enjoy:

As planned, Bella, Jessica and Angela drive to Port Angeles to go shopping for the upcoming dance. Bella is angry when she hears that Tyler thinks he will be taking her to the prom and finds out that is why Lauren is always to hateful to her. Bella gathers her nerve and quietly asks Angela about the Cullens’ being absent at school. Angela tells her that they go backpacking a lot.

After helping the two girls pick their dance ensembles, Bella heads off alone to find the town bookstore. Bella soon gets lost and she realizes that a boisterous group of guys are following her. She discovers too late that they have herded her onto a dead end street. She prepares to defend herself as they emerge on her when Edward screeches up in his Volvo. She jumps in and he takes off like a race car driver; running lights and driving very fast on the way out of Port Angeles. He is furious and asks Bella to distract him. She mentions her irritation over the Tyler/prom situation and he says he already knew about it. Edward seems to be reassuring himself when he says that it wouldn’t be ‘helpful’ if he hunted down Bella’s would-be attackers. Bella mentions that Jessica and Angela are probably worried about her and Edward drives her to the restaurant where she was supposed to meet them. Angela and Jessica emerge, having finished dinner. They are shocked to see her with Edward, but agree that she should get a ride home with him after the two eat dinner.

They go to an Italian Restaurant, La Bella Italia. The table that the hostess wants to seat them at is not satisfactory and Edward persuades her to give them a more private booth. Bella comments about his ‘dazzling’ people and she admits that she too is dazzled by him. Both the hostess and waitress are clearly enamored with Edward and are rudely ignoring Bella, which frustrates her. She orders the first thing she sees on the menu and Edward orders her two cokes. He is surprised she isn’t more shaken over the incident. She confides that she feels safe with him and her admission seems to upset him.

Bella comments that Edward’s eyes are light, meaning that he is must be in a good mood. She explains that when his eyes are darker he is much crabbier. She admits she has a theory and he agrees to answer a few questions if she will tell him on the way home. She asks why he was in Port Angeles and he dodges her question. During the conversation she touches his hand and finds it cold and hard. They discuss his desire to keep Bella safe and she points out that he may be messing with her fate; Edward tells her that perhaps her number was up when they first met. She is startled at first but she credits her safety to Edward. Edward finally confides that he can read minds and that is how he found out she was in trouble. Speaking about it renews his anger at the attackers and he explains how difficult it is for him not to go back and harm them. When they leave the restaurant, Edward asks Bella to share her theories about him.
