Twilight Chapter Nine – Theory By Nicole

On the way back to Forks, Bella persists in asking Edward about his ability to read minds. Edward tells Bella that he can read anyone’s mind and that hers is the only exception. Bella suspects there is something wrong with her since Edward can’t hear her thoughts. He pokes fun at her because she thinks she has a problem and he is the one that hears voices in his head. Bella tells Edward that she has a theory, but does not want to anger him; he coaxes her to fess up. She tells Edward about her conversation with Jacob Black. Bella also tells Edward that she did some research online about Vampires and that whilst looking; decided it didn’t matter to her that he is a vampire. Edward is shocked by Bella’s nonchalant attitude about what he is. Bella inquires about Edward’s age; he tells her he is seventeen. He then admits he has been seventeen a while.

Bella quizzes Edward about vampire myths, most of which Edward debunks. Edward again stresses to Bella how dangerous he is to her. Edward tells Bella that he will be going hunting with Emmett, but is not excited to leave because being way from her makes him feel anxious. She wants to know why he wasn’t at school that day since he got back early from a hunting trip and he tells her that while he can go out in the sun; he can’t let anyone see him in the sun. Edward promises to show her why sometime. Bella divulges that she felt anxious while he was away too. She begins to cry when Edward laments hearing her agree that she too felt anxious when he was gone. He reaches out to console her but pulls his hand back and apologizes instead. Bella returns his jacket saying she doesn’t want to have to explain to Charlie where she got it. Edward asks Bella not to go into the woods alone and she agrees after a somewhat dubious response from Edward as to why she shouldn’t.

Once Bella is at home, Charlie asks Bella why she is back so early. She realizes that Edward’s fast driving probably got her home much earlier than she should have been, most likely even earlier than her friends. Jessica calls and is surprised she is home so early as well. Jessica is dying to know about Bella’s night with Edward and Bella promises to tell her in Trig because it is an awkward time; Charlie is within hearing range. She asks Jessica to bring her jacket in the morning and Jessica agrees. That evening, Bella realizes three things: “Edward was a vampire. Second, there was a part of him—and I didn’t know how potent that part might be—that thirsted for my blood. And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him.”

Significant Events:

Edward and Bella both feel anxious when apart

Bella realizes she is in love with Edward Cullen

Questions for Consideration:
Did you believe Bella when she told Edward that she didn’t care that he was a Vampire?

Did you think it was too soon for Bella to have fallen in love with Edward? Had you fallen for him too?

If you had written Twilight, would your Vamps have different abilities than Stephenie’s do?

What would you have said to Jessica the next day?

Did something or someone in this chapter surprise you?

While re-reading this chapter, did you notice any particular symbolism or little detail you have never noticed before?

What is your favorite quote from this chapter?
