TA Staff member Emily is back with chapter 13 of Twilight:

Chapter Thirteen – CONFESSIONS By Emily

The iconic scene that led to the birth of this amazing love story is found in Chapter 13, “Confessions.” Bella and Edward spend the day together and finally come to terms with the intense feelings that have been building between them. Bella learns the answers to many questions about Edward and declarations are made.

*****

Edward’s physical beauty is magnified when he finally shows Bella his true self underneath the sunlight. Bella is mesmerized at how he appears to be a sparkling stone statue and hesitantly reaches out to touch him for the first time. Edward is amazed at her comfort being near him and relaxes, to the point that she catches him off guard, causing him to run away.

After Edward regains control of himself, the couple discusses their fear of being together as well as their fear of being apart from each other. Edward explains the reasons behind all of his actions when they first met, both his bloodlust and his realization that he is in love with Bella Given all of this information and her passionate feelings for him, Bella understands that they have just declared themselves to each other. With Bella’s encouragement, Edward relaxes again and this time he is the one who reaches out to touch Bella, slowly holding her close.

Time passes and they must leave the Meadow. Instead of walking hours back to the truck, Edward shows Bella how he travels in the forest. The exhilarating run is too much for Bella and she becomes dizzy with motion sickness. This isn’t helped when Edward kisses Bella for the first time. Their first kiss reveals both the passion and restraint between the two, and allows Edward to realize that he has the strength to be close to Bella. Taking advantage of her “intoxicated” state, Edward convinces Bella that he should drive her truck back to Charlie’s house.

Chapter 13, pg 263

Edward Cullen: “Don’t be afraid. I promise…I swear not to hurt you.” Chapter 13, pg 264

Bella Swan: “I don’t want you to leave.” Chapter 13, pg 266

Edward Cullen: “Bella, I couldn’t live with myself if I ever hurt you. You don’t know how it’s tortured me. The thought of you, still, white, cold…to never see you blush scarlet again, to never see that flash of intuition in your eyes when you see through my pretenses…it would be unendurable. You are the most important thing to me now. The most important thing to me ever.” Chapter 13, pg 273
