Twilight, Chapter Two – Open Book (Nicole)

On Bella’s second day of school she is relieved to find that she is not being stared at as much. She realizes that Mike Newton has a crush on her and wonders how to get him to back off a bit. In gym class she hits someone with the volleyball. Also, Edward Cullen is not at school. She thought all day about his reaction to her. After school she sees the rest of the Cullens getting into an expensive car and realizes that she was so preoccupied with their beauty she didn’t notice how well dressed and wealthy they look.

Bella learns that Charlie can’t cook so she offers to do the cooking. At dinner that evening Bella asks Charlie about the Cullens. His response is quite impassioned, which is rare for him. He reveals that he likes the Cullens and makes it clear that there are a lot of other people that are suspicious of them. Edward Cullen does not come back to school for the rest of the week, keeping Bella’s suspicions alive that she is the reason.

Back at school on Monday, Bella sees that Edward has returned and she feels strangely self-conscious when he stares at her during lunch. Edward speaks to Bella in Biology for the first time and his smile mesmerizes her and renders her speechless. While working on a lab their hands accidentally touch and Bella feels a jolt of electricity; they both jump in reaction. She notices that Edward’s eyes are no longer black, but a more golden color. She asks him if he got contacts and he quickly replies that he has not.

Edward grills Bella about why she has moved to Forks and she tells him all about her mother and her reason for moving. Edward admits that he finds her difficult to read, which surprises her because her mom has always called her an ‘open book’. She is generally not talkative and is surprised that she has spoken so freely with Edward. She is also frustrated by him – she can’t tell if he hates her or not. Edward stares at Bella in the parking lot after school, causing her to nearly hit another car when she backs out too fast. She thinks she can see Edward laughing in her rear view mirror as she drives away, frustrated.

Memorable Quotes:

Bella Swan: “It was ridiculous, and egotistical to think that I could affect anyone that strongly. It was impossible. And yet I couldn’t stop worrying that it was true.” Pg. 31

Jessica Stanley: “The Cullens don’t like anybody… well, they don’t notice anybody enough to like them. But he’s still staring at you.” pg. 42

Bella Swan: “I vividly remembered the flat black color of his eyes the last time he’d glared at me – the color was striking against the background of his pale skin and his auburn hair. Today, his eyes were a completely different color: a strange ocher, darker than butterscotch, but with the same golden tone.” Pg. 46

Edward Cullen: “Forks must be a difficult place for you to live.” Pg. 48

Bella Swan: “I was in disbelief that I’d just explained my dreary life to this bizarre, beautiful boy who may or may not despise me.” Pg. 50

Questions for Consideration:
What did you initially think when Edward Cullen was missing at school all week?

Do you agree with Edward that Bella is hard to read? Or do you think she is more an “open book” as she describes herself?

Why do you think there was a shared jolt of electricity when Edward and Bella touch in Biology?

What did you initially think when Edward Cullen was missing at school all week?

What i first thought when Edward Cullen left for the school is that he stayed home or watched her from a distance because for a fact i knew that he wouldn’t leave forever

Do you agree with Edward that Bella is hard to read? Or do you think she is more an “open book” as she describes herself?

I agree with Edward because she acts so calm when something bizzare happens like her finding out he is a vampire

Why do you think there was a shared jolt of electricity when Edward and Bella touch in Biology?

I think that there was a jolt f electricity because Edward is a vampire and Bella is a vampire.

I really think that Edward thinks too little of himself. he doesnt see that he is the most unbelievable person(vampire) ever. he doesnt realize that he is not a bad guy

what did you initially think when edward cullen was missing at school all week ??

i thought that he had gone away, to get some space from him and this girl who had caused him some pain in some way (from the way he reacts to her you can tell he’s in pain being in her presence)

Do you agree with edward that bella is hard to read ? or do you think she’s more an open book as she describes herself ?

I think that i found bella quite easy to read, as in i think i would kind of act the same way that she does if i was in that position (in my dreams lol)

why do you think that there was a jolt of electricity when edward and bella touched in biology ?

because they are fated to be togheter, their soul mates. They are part of the same being only together are they whole.

What did you initially think when Edward Cullen was missing at school all week?

First thing I considered was that maybe she irked him so much in Chapter One that he might’ve left. Then I took thought he might’ve just not been able to handle being near her– and this totally puzzled me because I couldn’t figure out why (again, I’d never heard of Twilight when I read the books)

Do you agree with Edward that Bella is hard to read? Or do you think she is more an “open book” as she describes herself?

I don’t think she’s hard to read, I think that because she has very odd reactions to things, she’s difficult to understand. Any reaction that one would expect her to have in a situation is the reaction she doesn’t end up havin –she’s calm where she’s meant to panic, and panicky about usual things. I imagine without Edward knowing her and the things that make her tick, this obviously drove him nuts.

Why do you think there was a shared jolt of electricity when Edward and Bella touch in Biology?

I think probably tension and their physical differences make it happen. I mean they’re polar opposites stuck in a room together, interacting for the first time, and I imagine they’re attracted to each other for the reasons they’re not meant to be, that ultimately bring them together.

what did you initially think when edward cullen was missing at school all week ??

I was really curious to where he might have gone and why he acted the way he did. When I first read the book, I thought he really might have hated Bella or something. I think reading from her point of view, I really felt the confusion she did. It was amazing to read Midnight Sun though and really hear more about Edward’s thought process…it was like being able to read HIS mind. (I couldn’t help myself with midnight sun…i mean really..being able to read EDWARD’s mind…too tempting)

Do you agree with edward that bella is hard to read ? or do you think she’s more an open book as she describes herself ?

i think Bella is somewhat hard to read. she constantly reacts differently than edward expects and she seems to remain fairly calm when most people would probably freak out. i think her mom sees her as an open book because she knows bella so well, while edward is just starting to try to figure her out.

why do you think that there was a jolt of electricity when edward and bella touched in biology ?

this could be for a few reasons…one i think could be the whole soul mates theory (which is lovely and romantic to think), but i think a lot of it had to do with him being so cold and shocking her system when they touched.

What did you initially think when Edward Cullen was missing at school all week?

I tought that something was defenatelly wrong with him and his family I was very suspicious of the hole thing but i like to be in suspense so I left it on the back of my mind and continued reading I didnt want to figure it out so I didnt think about it.

Do you agree with Edward that Bella is hard to read? Or do you think she is more an “open book” as she describes herself?
I think that she is hard to read because most of the time her actions her body laguage dose not express what she is really feeling she is kind of reserved and very causious of what she lets other people know about her maybe she dose this in a subconseous level but she dose.

Why do you think there was a shared jolt of electricity when Edward and Bella touch in Biology?
I think this happend because there already was a conection between them its like there bodies already new they would have a history together of course am a romantic ath heart :P , but i agree with most people and also this jolt wasa product of the unexpected cold skin of Edward.

What did you initially think when Edward Cullen was missing at school all week?
I wasn’t completely sure, i knew it had to be something to do with Bella, i didn’t think it was because he hated her. I knew it was something more. I really wanted to know where he had gone, why he wasn’t coming back and what did Bella have to do with it. Alot of questions popped up.

Do you agree with Edward that Bella is hard to read? Or do you think she is more an “open book” as she describes herself?
I agreed with both of them really, i think Bella is hard to read because she is such a deep character, there is the girl she really is, and the girl she puts on to make everyone else happy, on the other hand, she is someone you can understand the outside of her emotions and feelings, so you can tell lets say she is happy. But she is hard to figure out why she is so happy.

Why do you think there was a shared jolt of electricity when Edward and Bella touch in Biology?
I think because of a few reasons,
number 1, because of Edwards body heat the sudden touch of the cold skin against the hot made a sudden chock of electricity flare up Bella’s skin.
number 2, i think that both Edward and Bella’s body’s and mind’s knew they were irrationally in love with each other before they knew it themselves, so when there body’s touched they just knew the chemistry between them and it shocked them both, because its like finding your soul mate, sends your body into a shock state.
number 3, because Edward and Bella are opposites, in every way possible, Edward was created to kill Bella, that’s why her blood is so amazing to him, so when they touch, which is against nature it sent a shock through them. They are not meant to create contact at all except the first day Edward see’s Bella. So when they touch its like a warning saying that its wrong.

    :)
