Twilight: Chapter Five: Blood Type By Claire

In Chapter Five, Bloodtype, Edward continues to speak to Bella, and invites her to sit with him in the cafeteria, causing his siblings and classmates to be incredulous. Following this encounter, Bella goes to biology class, which Edward has ditched, to find that they are blood typing. She feels faint at the sight of blood and has to be escorted to the nurse by Mike Newton. Edward finds them in the parking lot and carries Bella away from Mike, taking her to the nurse’s office, where he stays with her. We see Edward no longer shying away from Bella and we also see him enjoying himself, teasing Bella and having fun at her expense.

Edward uses his charm on poor Ms. Cope to get Bella excused from gym. Despite Bella’s protests, he insists on driving her home. During the drive, Edward opens up to Bella. He asks her about Renee, and when asked about the Cullens, he briefly but sincerely tells Bella how he feels about his adopted family.

I loved this chapter, It’s the first time they really interact and they get to understand eachother a little bit more. This chapter shoul not have been cut from the movie.

What did you think when Edward carried Bella to the nurse’s office? Did you feel badly for Mike Newton? – NO, NO, NO :) not at all, I was so pleased when Edward took over.

I *loved* this chapter!!! We get to see glimpses of both Edward’s and Bella’s personality much better. I think it’s interesting that Edward finally admits to himself that there is something special about Bella, other than the fact that he can’t read her mind.

It’s fun to watch them “test the waters”, so to speak, as they begin their relationship. I loved it when Edward beckoned her to come sit with him; not only was it a thrill for Bella, but I felt it was Edward’s way of saying to everybody else in school that he wasn’t such an outsider as they thought he was. And what a typical reaction/action by Edward when he kept spinning the bottle top.

The first time I read this chapter, I actually laughed to myself when Bella describes her reaction to the blood typing. I thought it was completely ironic … here she is, getting involved with a vampire who literally wanted to kill her and drink her blood the first time they met, and yet *she* can’t stand the sight/smell of blood!! Too funny!

I think Edward really started proving himself as a “knight in shining armor” when he picked Bella up and took her to the nurse’s office. No, I didn’t feel sorry for Mike at all. I can’t really explain why … I just thought he was too needy and too pushy with her.

I’m enjoying reading “Twilight” again and discussing it as a book club. I haven’t been able to comment on the earlier chapters (I think I’ll go back and do that, though), but I’m going to be here all the way through to the last chapter!!! :)

Putting myself in the place of Bella I would have been so nervous and full of butterflies when he asked me to sit with him, but very curious all the same.

I think that Edward really gets to see the world through Bella’s eyes. I mean I know that he has been around since 1901 but has he really been interested in what is going on in the world and how it has changed before he met Bella?.

I think Bella is very outspoken and determined because she has been the parent for so long. She is a decision maker and to have to wonder would drive her crazy.

When Edward carried Bella to the nurse’s office you could tell that he was really beginning to care for her. I mean he is a vampire and she has just fainted at the smell of blood and he is trying to take care of her. He was also worried that Mike might have hurt her which makes you wonder what kind of thoughts Mike has had about Bella when Edward can read his mind.

  • Winnie Crendetta

Before I read that last comment, I never put into consideration what might have made Edward think that Mike had hurt her, but now I wonder just what he had heard in Mike’s thoughts. That was a very interesting point that was brought to my attention

i loved this chapter as well. you are feel the excitment and tension between the two characters.

as far as bella having a temper — i do think she has a normal temper for a teen. but in this case it wasn’t the simple matter of being tempermental. she was standing up for herself by becoming angry. her character is written with such integrity that when she feels that someone else is not behaving with integrity (in this case, Edward) she becomes angry and expect better of them.
