SQUEEING OVER……THE ARCHITECTURE? (IN THE TWILIGHT MOVIE)

Posted January 8th, 2009 By: 32 Comments »

Say what? Yes, you read that correctly. Below is information about the Cullen house used in the Twilight movie from DesignTavern.com:

Fit for a vampire.. The Hoke House (the Cullen House from Twilight) – Skylab Architecture

Myself and two other architecture students went along to see the new vampire come romance movie twilight.
It might come as a surprise to you, that myself and my friends, all in our twenties (and two of us male..) all swooned at one point..

But it probably wasn’t for the same reason as majority of the audience.

I’m talking about the Cullen’s House..

Well I’m happy to say that there were no coffins, dungeons or moats.. but rather a splendid contemporary home, that’s certainly worth investigating…

The Hoke House is by architect Jeff Kovel via ‘Skylab Architecture’ it’s 4300 squares, built my Metcalf Construction, with Lucy Metcalf as the interior designer and landscaper.

A bit of a side note, Twilight was a great movie and is definitely worth watching, (i’ve just started the first book also!)

But i’ll leave it up to you to decide which you prefer, the eye candy of Edward Cullen’s or his home.

I have to be honest, I was more interested in Bella and Edward than the house. But these images are cool. The architecture is beautiful. I think this house was a good choice for the Cullen home. What do you think? Was the house in the movie like you imagined? or totally different? Love it? Hate it?

Hahahaha finally the 1st one to comment :D

WOW!!! Those are sum great pictures!! ANd i totally agree that the house itself is amazing.
I’m not going to say that when i read the book i imagined this house because in reality i imagined something completely different…But the house did give a sort of safety and loneliness that the Cullens had discribed so “it was the one place they didn’t have to hide”. As i watching the movie and this, as i said, amazing house was shown i was completely in awe because of its structure and beauty. I love the fact that they chose this magnificent house to play the role of “The Cullen Household”. I am very pleased with their choice.

  • twilightcountryresident

The house is the home of a Nike executive, and is located in the Portland, Oregon metropolitan area (refer to the Twilight Movie Companion book). I’ve heard they may move the filming location to Canada, but if they do, then it would seem that they’d have to use different locations for the Cullen’s house, Bella’s house, and Forks High School–all of which are in Oregon. I hope they don’t do that–I hate it when they make those kind of changes. It messes with continuity. Besides, Canada’s even further north–the weather might be even colder!

  • Leann

I don’t necessarily thing it was a bad choice, but when I read the book I thought it described an older home, sort of antebellum. That’s what I had imagined. Maybe a plantation-style home with columns at the front. Maybe I read the book wrong. But this is a way cool house otherwise. I’m just being nit-picky about the book. :)

  • Bella Cullen

Some of the architectural features were definitely nice about the Cullen house. I especially loved all the glass windows looking onto the forest and the 2nd story opening to no patio. But I do have to say my only complaint was how small the house seemed, especially compared to the description and feel you get from the series.

  • GreerMom

The house above is truly amazing. However, I must admit that my “imaginary” house from the book was quite different….I pictured something along the lines of a remodeled “Stanton House” or “Sherman Valley Home” (both built around 1858 and located in Mississippi).

  • EdwardsBrand

I never pictured the house as much as Edwards room. I thought it would be bigger than what it was in the movie.

  • casumagi

Not at all what I’d imagined for the Cullen house. Pretty nice on the inside, but the outside is ugly…

  • jenb

This house is beautiful. Different than I pictured when reading the book, but I expected that. (It would be hard to find a house that fits the desciption in a fiction novel!)But it definitely works for the Cullens.

I just REALLY HOPE they’ll use the same house in NM. It’ll mess up the feel of the movie. I hate when they change sets/looks from movie to movie. (The same w/the sets for the Swan house & Forks HS.)

I pictured Edward’s room bigger too. But in the companion book it says the reason they picked that room was because of the big open windows (for the wall) & how there was no porch, staris, etc. It just opened & they though that was perfect for Edward. So to me it makes sense/works.

  • nan.eliz

I love the house, it’s definitely not the way I pictured it. It works though, the only thing is Edward’s room.. I really don’t see how they’ll fit a bed in there for Eclipse. :) And yes I do hope they keep it for New Moon. I love the bottom right pic, I wish they had used that shot for the movie.

  • Kelly

I imagined the house completely different, but I still love this one.
I just hope they keep all the same sets.

  • Sierra

I wasn’t exactly sure what the house would look like, but this is beautiful. I thought it was just the greatest thing ever. It totally fits. I pictured Edward’s room differently, and yeah, wondering how they’ll fit a bed in there for Eclipse. I would totally live there

  • emmy

I pictured a very different house when I was reading but I loved the house they used in the movie – much better than what was described in the book! The setting was very similar to what I pictured though.

  • Amanda Kay

I totally pictured a different house as well as Edwards room being A LOT bigger….how are they going to do the bed scene in eclipse in a room that small i wonder??? …. any who… but I am happy with how they did it. the house they have in the movie is better than the one i imagined actually. gorgeous house!!

  • Emily

I love this house, it is amazingly beautiful. It is, however, not at all what I picture when reading the book. I pictured a redone plantation style house as well, with the sprawling porch, and white. Definitely white. I can’t imagine they will use the same house for New Moon if they are filming in Canada which is a shame as they won’t be able to find a place that looks exactly like this area. They could always build a set to look like the house if they needed or use exterior shots that they already have on film if they have to show the outside.

I also pictured Edward’s room as much bigger, but understand why they used the room they did.

  • JAMIE HARRIS

A VERY BEAUTIFUL HOUSE, BUT I LIKE THE EYE CANDY EDWARD BETTER

  • kaki

i imagined the house big and white like described so i was kind of disappointed but atleast its cool. very “cullen”

  • Heather

I’d have to agree with alot of these comments. Though this house is totally cool looking and I could see the Cullens living there, I pictures something different. I pictured a multi-story big square white house with an exaggerated wrap-around front porch. thought the house they used work I don’t see it working for the rest of the books, especially because a marjority of the action takes place in a foyer/hallway area that you can look to one side and see Edward’s piano room and then look to the other side and see the living room, with the staircase being the center of the home. But I’ll guess we’ll just have to wait and see. Pictures are great!!

  • I found MY Edward

Beautiful house, but like most of you, it’s not at all what I pictured while reading the books. I was a bit dissapointed with it when I saw Twilight. And I do forsee furture problems with it in the upcoming movies. They are filming NM in Canada, so it should be interesting what they decide to do. Particularly with Breaking Dawn( assuming that they’ll make the 4th movie) most of the storyline surronds the Cullen home, inside & out. With it’s spanning porch & lush landscape I have a have a hard time seeing it with THIS house. Especially the wedding. It should be interesting how it plays out.

  • kerri

Its very intersting, eye catching, intruiging even. But honestly, I would have prefered the victorian style home Esme built. You know, wrap around porch, light wood paneling, white beams, grand stair case, big window wall, etc. I know those are hard to come by but still, if Harry Potter can build an entire castle and villages, why not a home Stephanie described? Hmmm.

  • AllisCullen

The Cullen house was not AT ALL the way I imagined it, but I LOVED it nonetheless….

Didn’t the books say it was WHITE?

I remember thinking it seemed more castle-y in the books, but I really loved all the windows in the movie house.

  • Rachel

Okay, NO I HATED THE HOUSE FOR THE MOVIE!!!! It looked NOTHING like the book and was SOO disappointing!! SO MUCH SO that I’m TRYING to talk my husband into buying a piece of land in FORKS not far from the RIVER so WE can build the CULLEN’S HOUSE THE WAY IT SHOULD BE BUILT!! (not that they “built” this house for the movie, but you know what I mean!) Land is CHEAP up there and I’d love NOTHING MORE than to build the Cullen’s home from the ground up, and do it EXACTLY like the book describes it!! Then we could use it as a “B & B in FORKS!! How COOL WOULD THAT BE??!?! Would ANY of you come and STAY THERE??? What do you guys think??

  • cate

This house is amazing but totally different to the one in the book. I was quite disappointed the first time I saw it because I hate it when the movie is different from the book. I was expecting a much older, larger, elegant house. It’s too bad the producers couldn’t find one like that. However, now that we’ve seen this one, they are going to have to use it in the future movies.

    Hello!
This Is Henry from over at DesignTavern.com
    I
First off, i’m glad you found the post worthwhile sharing with your readers, and I invite everyone to pop over to the tavern and say hello!

Also, I have some excellent news, I have been in touch with the guys over at skylab architecture, and have organised an interview with Jeff Kovel, So make sure you sign up for the newsletter! Okay, enough shameless self advertising! (but seriously… stop by)

I really love the house, it’s amazing, and from memory, a NIKE CEO is actually living in it presently.

I have to admit I saw the movie first, and am only now beginning to read the books so didn’t have anything to compare to.

I just hope we get some more glimpses of this baby in the coming movies!

  • Viv

I actually hated the house that was used in the film. Not because it was an ugly house or anything, but because it was all wrong acording to the book. The house was supposed to be classic and white on the outside. It was supposed to look like it was 100 years old, and be three stories and rectagular. It was not supposed to be modern at all.

And I was actually excited to see how the entire back part of the house was one big glass window. Especially since the Cullens are sopposed to be able to close a metal sheild over that window. That would have been a cool special effect. The movie did not show that.

  • Sarah

this house really is amazing but nothing like what i imagined
i was thinking more of one of those classic giant white houses with the two big columns on either side of the front door
kind of the the white house, minus the flag and the water fountain, with lots more trees and a long driveway.

  • shannnon

everything about the house was what i imagined except the color of the outside i expected it to be white but over all i loved the house

  • Autumn

It’s not what I pictured in the book, but I still think it was an awesome house for the movie! It has the “feel” that the Cullen house should have. What I had imagined was a white 3 story antebellum style house with columns on the front. Here’s a few examples. Does anyone agree?

  • Christine

It’s not at all what I pictured … I was thinking something a little more Victorian, but when this house popped up on screen I drooled. I am such an architecture nerd, and I love contemporary houses just like this. I would live there in an instant.

  • Lisa

I personally love the house. It isn’t what is described in the book, but it does seem to have the appropriate feel for the Cullens. And I can’t help but wonder, where would they have found another house in the middle of nowhere that at least fit some of their requirements? I think they would have had to build it. I wanted to point something out that I noticed, and I could be wrong because I haven’t been in the house. But in the film, Edward’s cd wall comes right up to edge of the door making his room very narrow. However, in reality you can see from the outside of the house that there is actually more wall and a downstairs window beyond that point in the house. Implying that there is more to that room and they chose to cover it. So there probably is room for a bed, they just have to shift stuff around and not cover that part of the room.

  • Lisa

Amending my comment… I just came across a photo of the Hoke residence (the house used) not dressed for the film. That wall does come right up to the door, and there is a door right beside that, perhaps to a bathroom or closet, that was covered by the open door in the film. So the room is that narrow. However, in this picture there was what appeared to be a queen sized bed at an angle against that wall and a reclining chair just on the other side of the door. So the room is big enough for Edward’s bed with a little rearranging, which the book says he had to do anyway.

  • Dissapointed fan

Omg the house was beautiful, but nothing like what I imagined the Cullen house to be not at all,it looked to flashy and just not Cullen at all It was upsetting lol but whatever summit entertainment screwed up the whole movie anyway an there is nothing we can do aboutt it now.

  • cynthia

I hated the house!!!!!It did not fit the description that Stephanie gave us.It wasn’t right, you know?It is supposed to be WHITE,RECTANGULAR,and where is the RIVER?!It does not look 100 years old and it is way to modern!I mean it is nice and all,but it just isn’t “The Cullens.”
