Decorating Tips
Fondant: My recommendation, although not too many people like it, covering the cake with fondant is the best way to go-even for cupcakes. It’s the most beautiful way to decorate a cake and it’ll just look like perfection.
If you’re not that savvy in the cake world: fondant is smooth, almost flawless icing on cakes. Fondant is made of boiled sugar, water and glucose. It’s normally bought already made because it’s difficult to make from scratch. If you go to a professional bakery they will charge you an arm and a leg for it because (and I’m speaking from experience) fondant is work. Even decorating with basic butter cream, it’s still tough! The baking of the cake is the easy part. Usually, fondant is sold in arts and crafts stores and the instructions are on the box. But if you have no experience with it at all it’ll be hard for you no matter how detailed the instructions are. Therefore, I recommend taking cake decorating classes at said arts and crafts store and they’re usually pretty inexpensive. It’s the best investment I ever made. I’ve learned a lot and you’ll never want to buy another cake for a party again so you’ll be saving money for years to come.
Butter cream frosting tip: If you’re decorating the cake with regular frosting, make sure you let the icing set for an hour or so, so it can dry. Get a large piece of wax paper, place it over the cake, and run a decorating spatula to smooth over the cake. This will leave the cake with a much smoother look.
