TWILIGHT SAGA BOOK CLUB: OPEN BOOK, TWILIGHT CHAPTER 2

Welcome to the Twilight Saga Book Club Chapter 2 Open Book. TA Staff member Nikki is back with Chapter 2. Enjoy:

Twilight, Chapter Two – Open Book (Nicole)

On Bella’s second day of school she is relieved to find that she is not being stared at as much. She realizes that Mike Newton has a crush on her and wonders how to get him to back off a bit. In gym class she hits someone with the volleyball. Also, Edward Cullen is not at school. She thought all day about his reaction to her. After school she sees the rest of the Cullens getting into an expensive car and realizes that she was so preoccupied with their beauty she didn’t notice how well dressed and wealthy they look.

Bella learns that Charlie can’t cook so she offers to do the cooking. At dinner that evening Bella asks Charlie about the Cullens. His response is quite impassioned, which is rare for him. He reveals that he likes the Cullens and makes it clear that there are a lot of other people that are suspicious of them. Edward Cullen does not come back to school for the rest of the week, keeping Bella’s suspicions alive that she is the reason.

  1. Jessica responded:

I love the part in this chapter where Charlie defends the Cullens. It shows that he likes them.
I also love that Bella gets totally freaked out because she knows the reason Edward isn’t
At school because of her but she doesn’t know why. ;D

  2. Nikki responded:

I think it’s this chapter that sets off the whole obsession between Edward and Bella because here shes thinking and wondering about him a lot and taken with each thought is a step closer to attatchment to eachother but she doesn’t make it official in her mind that she’s attached a couple of chapters later.

  3. Burleigh Matthew M.D. responded:

    Dear Nicole,

As I was reading Bella’s description of Edward (Ch 2 pg 41)

‘His skin was pale… But there was something more…he didn’t look harsh or unfriendly, as he had the last time I’d seen him.’

I started compairing Stephanie’s Edward to Bram’s dracula. A couple of thoughts on Edward Cullen and Vladimir Dracula: Contrasting Character Traits.

Twilight’s Edward Cullen certainly is a very appealing character. But as we compare “Twilight’s” Edward to “Dracula’s” Vladimir, we should remember that Stephanie Meyer admitted she “knew almost nothing about vampires” when she created Edward.

Stephanie bestowed Edward with the capacity to love unconditionally. (The Saga’s recurring theme of unconditional love, is why it can create such a strong positive addiction for so many of it’s readers)

Then Stephanie gave Edward some of the personal characteristics of Fitzwilliam Darcy, Romeo Montague, and Edward Ferrars

What girl couldn’t love this guy ? ( Bella Elizabeth Elinor Juliet Swan, can be just as appealing to “literate” men)

But classic fictional vampires (both male and female) are “metaphoric representations” of real life sociopaths and borderline psychotics.

In real life they are men and women, who are emotionally incapable of loving others. And yet they have the ability to enchant members of the opposites sex, drain them of their joie de vivre and then desert them after emotionally emptying them.

If you are observant of the lives of others, you will invariably see examples of this. That is why the character of the vampire has been universally accepted for over a thousand years. Because at either a conscious or subconscious level, we know that “human vampires” really do exist. So you tend to automatically identify the “nature of the creature” whenever it is portrayed in books, movies, or plays.

I hope you never encounter one. I (the great judge of character that I am .. “not” ) did once. And the experience left me shaking my head for the next four months.

Knowing that he was a “vegetarian” I might support a sister’s or daughter’s decision to date Edward Cullen.

But should their relationship ever turn serious, I would encourage her to specify on her bridal registry “PILLOWS ONLY PLEASE !”

Well those were some of the thoughts that passed through my head as I was thinking about this question. I would be interested to know what you think about this topic. Especially if you noticed any mistakes I made. As Edward would say “I am only human” So if you have a moment, let me know what you think.

Thank you for taking the time to make this forum available to us.

    Most Sincerely,

    Doc B

OH! I did come up with two new tweet responses. “Edward was the creation of a joyous dream by Stephanie Meyers, While Vladimir was the creature in one of Bram Stoker’s nightmares.

And on comparing “Twilight” to “Dracula” my response was. “Blazing Saddles” and “High Noon” are both Westerns, but they have nothing else in common
