TA TALKS BACK: NEW MOON, ECLIPSE, WHAT’S THE RUSH??

TA fan Rachel shares her thoughts on rushing the New Moon movie and the Eclipse movie:

New Moon, Eclipse; what’s the Rush? by Rachel

New Moon, the second instalment in the much anticipated movie adaption of the twilight saga, was scheduled to begin filming March 23rd, and to be released in cinemas November 20th, with the next movie, Eclipse, set to be released June 30th 2010.

Not even having a confirmed director for eclipse yet, isn’t it too soon for Summit to be coming up with release dates for movies they haven’t even started working on? As far as I’m concerned, they’re rushing it. I understand that the actors aren’t supposed to age and getting all the movies out faster could increase the hype; without giving it as much time to die down, but if they just do rush jobs without trying to fulfil the movie’s potential, then it will be an immense waste.

Why the rush? Two things. Money and Harry Potter.
New Moon being released this Thanksgiving works with keeping schedules on track. If they had kept the Twilight saga at Thanksgiving release dates, it would be much the same thing that Peter Jackson did with the release of the Lord of the Rings movies (having them released at the same time for three years)

Since Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince will be released this summer, that clears out serious boxoffice competition at Thanksgiving. However, the first installment of Deathly Hallows will be released in Nov of 2010. Summit does not want to go head to head with Harry Potter. Releasing Eclipse in the summer of ’10 gives them a chance at box office gold, especially if there are no other majorly anticipated films hitting theatres.

As for the release dates being so far in the future, this typically happens to secure certain release dates. This may discourage other films from picking the same release weekend and increases Summit’s chances at yet another record breaking opening weekend.

I agree pretty much with Cloverdilly….however, I do also think that the actors are in such hot demand that they want to do these two movies back to back as to free them up to do “other” projects…I know Kristen & Rob both are signed up to do other projects. The real question is will they all be back for Breaking Dawn? I certainly hope so, but I would imagine they haven’t signed anything yet and it will be costly, both to pay the actors and for the special effects for Reneesme, etc…. Regardless, looking forward to seeing all the actors back on screen. I’m a “twilight mom” and a fan of both the movie and the books…just want them to be filmed well.

I don’t know if I’d agree that they are all that concerned with the Harry Potter challenge. The Twilight Saga has its own fan base and can stand up against any challenger. I think that was evident when Twilight was released, and some really big budget long awaited movies hit the theaters, but Twilight keep right in there…holding there own in the theaters until the release of the DVD. What I would agree with (as far as a HP comparison is concerned)…even though HP is a great book series, it’s alittle tedious having to wait 2 or 3 years for the next movie installment to come out. You’ll just have to trust me on this…I work at a movie theater and I hear ALL the complaints. People are anxious to see that next book on the big screen to see if it matches up with their vision, but HP has gone the way of Star Wars (alot of time between movies).

I loved The Lord of the Rings movies & books and was so happy with the way that Peter Jackson and NewLine filmed and released the movies. You had something that you could look forward to and a fixed amount of time that you had to wait for that next installment. And even though that was hard (I am so OCD with NO patience what-so-ever) I knew that my LOTR fix was just around the corner.

I do believe that the whole “The cast isn’t suppose to age thing” is really important too. After all the main actors are teens and early 20-somethings, so its important to maintain that consistent look for the characters. But there is also something that we really don’t want to think about, but since this did happen to the HP movies, I think it’s worth mentioning. Even though it’s hard to think about, stuff happens…and you don’t want the need to replace a cast member due to an untimely death.

If The Twilight Saga movies are filmed back to back (and I’m including Breaking Dawn here even though I haven’t heard any buzz about it yet)…bottom line, I think this is a good thing. It doesn’t feel rushed to me, it feels like they’re just trying to keep up with the flow of the story. I don’t want to have to wait years to see the next installment.

I have to agree with clover, what is the rush. I am as anxious as the next fan to see the movies as they come out. However I feel anticipation makes the waiting all worth while. I think that the director of New Moon as well as whatever director they choose for Eclipse should as Clover said read and reread the book some parts that I think alot of us fans would have liked to see in Twilight were missing. I think they should definatly think about what the fans would really like to see as well as their own vision for the film.

I am not a big fan of the Harry Potter movies but I must say they are extreamly well done. Icannot wait for New Moon & Eclipse But I feel there is no rush.

well, I think that a lot of the reason it takes so long is the red tape. The man power is there and they can get it done quickly and right. It’s all about delegation and scheduling. With the release dates set, everyone knows there’s no messing around and will work hard to get it done. Don’t worry about the quality, no director would put his name on something that didn’t come out exactly how they wanted it to.

they are most likely rushing it because the cullens are not suppose to be aging.. and in real life you cant fight those kind of things.. makeup only goes so far

  • Taylor

I think they made eclipse so close was that they can have a longer time to work on breaking dawn because i dont think theyll make it a trilogy and its gonna require alot more money because it will have alot of special effects

I kinda agree with both sides of this!! I dont think they should rush the movies b/c there is alot of deatils that you dont really cath the 1st time you read it onley true twilight fans would realize what it was!! I was very upset about how they left out a lot of great chapters in twilight!! I would wait 2 years to see the next movie as long as they made it as great as the books!! I do understand all of the points about rushing the movie i do hope that even though the are rushing newmoon and eclips that they keep with the rush and dont make twilight fans wait 2-3 years for breaking dawn!!
