TA TALKS BACK: A MOM’S OBSESSION….WITH TWILIGHT

TA fan Tiffany shares about her obsession:

A Mom’s Obsession by Tiffany

When a fellow mom within my local mom’s group posted a message about this “vampire love story,” I’ll be honest. I laughed out loud and made a note to stay away from her [jokingly, of course]. But after another Mom read it, then another, and then yet another, all of them posting how sucked in [no pun intended] they’d become I gave in. I am, after all, a stay at home Mom of two girls under the age of 3 who hadn’t read a book since an English honors class in college. Needless to say, I quickly became the noted Twilight addict within the group.

As a late bloomer to the series, the movie was already in production, so it wasn’t long before I started obsessing over the stills and secret videos popping up everywhere. And then, there was Rob. While I am absolutely, unequivocally in love with the character of Edward, I found myself falling harder and harder for the man behind Edward: Robert Pattinson. I have never, NEVER, had a crush like this on an actor. So why? What is it about Rob that just pulls me and fellow moms and girls alike, in over and over again?

I’m a twilight mom! totally obsessed with Twlight! it’s a complete escape from reality into a world where a man loves a woman unconditionally, completely, compassionately… in ways that we don’t typically see after years of marriage, not at least on a regular basis! and yes, rpattz’s eyes are well, hypnotic… but i gotta admit that my hubby’s eyes are just as hypnotic (honestly, really!) i have no shame that i’ve completely immersed myself in the town of Forks with the Cullens and the wolf pack!

I’m also a stay at home mother of 1 and pregnant with another. I stumbled upon twilight when my neighbor suggested the series to me, I’m a series collector so I just added it to my collection. I have books but sometimes I just don’t have time to read them all or they don’t catch my attention enough for me to want to finish… but twilight was something that caught me by surprise. I started to read and next thing I know a week later I’m done with all four books. I couldn’t put them down, now I love the books and I did watch the movie, I found myself obsessed with everything twilight, following the blogs and watching for news. I don’t know what it is, but I think it’s because Edward is the ideal man, polite, and just so in love. The thought of someone wanting to die for you, it’s an old school concept but what women wouldn’t want that. I love my husband for the record, but a girl can imagine.

I don’t know what it is about Twilight but I am also a Twi-hard Mom. My first book since highschool was a Harry Potter book years ago (okay so i was in hs 7yrs ago but still!) and I couldn’t put it down but once I was done that was it… as for Twilight, I just can’t get enough! Helping my addiction was that I always thought Cedric in HP was really cute yet didn’t know who he was so when I got to look at him more in Twilight I was pretty excited! It’s sad/funny that my 2 1/2 yr old son (Phoenix) will see clips or pics of Twilight related things and go “that’s mommy’s movie!!” And of course when he sees Robert Pattinson he says “There’s Mommy’s friend!!” Mommy wishes that was her friend dear ;) Do I really talk about Twilight/Rob that much?? Pfft… lol. So far after being annoyed of my constant twilight talk, I’ve managed to cross over my own mother, my mother-in-law, friends, and people from my work hehe.

  4. JOSIES responded:

I have to agree with the twilight mom addiction only that I am a twilight grandma. I have daughters who have children who are totally into the Twilight Sage, in fact they got me hooked. I can’t figure it out either, except that there is love between Bella and Edward that somehow seems to be a fantasy love that some of us wish we could have had and some of us still have. So, I think it’s not limited to tweens, teens, young moms, it even goes to middle-aged women.

I became a Twi-hard Mum (Mom for USA folks :) ) when my daughter came home from school last December begging me to let her go watch this movie Twilight with her friends. I asked her what it was all about and she said Vampires. As soon as she said that word I said “No Chance”. My mind visualised fangs, people being ripped apart, blood gore and not something I thought suitable for a tweenie. Days and days (felt like years, maybe decades…) of nagging me claiming that everyone was talking about the books and movie Twilight and how all her friends had read the books etc… I gave in saying that she could see it if I went with her so that if she got scared I was there for her and take her home.

It is amazing how one movie can change your life! We watched the movie, came out dazed or was it dazzled, I am not sure which yet. My daughter and I were speechless, and as we made our way down the stairs heading for the car there was this bookstore with Stephanie Meyer’s books on display. My daughter didn’t say a word; it was completely my own compulsion to have the book Twilight. I bought it and went home reading it in the one night. Next morning, eyes bloodshot and addicted, I bought Breaking Dawn. Yes I got the last book; I always read the last chapter of books to make sure I like the ending before I read the books. One day later I purchased the other two books as my daughter had finished Twilight already and needed more… She was addicted as well.

We went to the cinema at least seven times in the holidays together to watch this movie. (I refuse to fess up to more on the grounds my husband may have me committed LOL)

I read the books and became depressed, there was no more to read. I had to have more so I succumbed to reading fanfiction. Some of it was fantastic and helped me cope with the addiction. But then my own thoughts of storylines came to mind and well, yeah I wrote some myself. My daughter and I spend a lot of time together now, we often discuss Twilight and the stories we write. We found something that we both enjoy so much and have in common which in turn has brought us even closer as mother and daughter.

I love all the actors in Twilight and as for Robert, well, I am Mrs Cope, I have to remind myself he is too young for me to be dreaming about but dang it’s hard not to drool every now and then… And that is how I became a Twi-hard fan. :D

I am a Twilight Mum and proud of it. While browsing in a shop this morning I had a lady comment on my t-shirt (I’m wearing my “why am I covered in feathers” tee). Turns out she is a grandmother and a Twilight addict. We stood and chatted for ages and the sparkle in her eyes when she talked about her fav bits was really nice. She laughed at herself and said she must be a silly old fool. And I told her “no way”…romantics don’t get old, they just get more soppy!! lol

  8. Heather responded:

Right there with ya sista! 32 yr old mom of a 6 yr old! Late twilight bloomer too!

  9. utzy responded:

  10. Twilight Mom Australia responded:

Tiffany you have just made my day, like everybody here who responded to your article. I live on this web site, like you I have a very repetitive life, Children, Husband etc, I am not working , so when a friend introduced me to the Twilight Book Dec/Jan for a holiday read, I was hooked, I have seen the Twilight Movie 28 times… I have now re-read all four books four times. Finally yesterday 22 April the DVD came to Australia and I rushed out first thing in the morning to get my pre-ordered copy. I am also totally obsessed with Rob, too. If anyone writes or says something negative about him, I get so upset I take it very personal, I feel the need to protect and defend him and I have. He is absolutely the most gorgeous person on this planet, he is actually, very shy, (watch the body language) he also has a great sense of humour, he is down to earth. A great artist, musician and actor and very humble about his success. Of course he is sex on legs, swoon… I have over 50 photos of Rob/Edward on my iphone, I have the Twilight Sound Track on my i pod , my ipet cat is ginger and called Edward, I have photos of Rob/Edward on my fridge, I have printed out Twilight photos and use them as book marks, I have a poster of Rob in my wardrobe. I have the Twilight Movie Companion, The Directors Notebook , a Twilight Bag, 2 Team Edward T-Shirts, A Team Pattinson T-Shirt, I have The Cullen Crest Key Ring , I have a fridge magnet that says “If you don’t like Twilight , you’re just stupid” I have already said all that in the “Are you Obsessed with the Twilight Saga” article, a couple of weeks ago., and like I have already said I am on this web site every spare minute, I still look after the children, husband, the house work is not getting done as much, if I have to quickly vaccum, cook dinner, clean the bathrooms etc it’s getting done quickly so I can get back on the laptop or some days nothing gets done until my poor suffering ever so patient Husband comes home and he does it. Twilight is my Life now, everything else comes second., and there is not a minute that goes by without me thinking Twilight and Rob. One my friends has joked about Twilight rehab . So I am glad I am not the only one Tiffany thank you and all who responded, ah and Candice you said you were 7 when Rob was born and you feel like a Cougar ”don’t”. I was 21 in 1986 when Rob was born and I so want to be his Cougar. ( There is only an 8 years age difference between Rob and my son) but I so don’t care. I also have a free pass from my Husband and he has a free pass for Jennifer Love Hewitt.

    Tiffany,

Wow, you wrote that so well. Since you have such young children. I take it your much younger than I am as my oldest is 17. I’m what you would consider a “newbie”. My husband bought the “Twilight” video for me to watch about a month ago (little did he realize what he got himself into). I loved the movie! I said I’ve got to read the book! I never have read a book so fast in all my life! In two days I returned to the store to buy “New Moon”. I had a hard time finding the books — it seems like everyone had the “Twilight” craze. When I picked up “Breaking Dawn” it was the next to the last book on the shelf. I really wish “Midnight Sun” would be published, I think it will sometime, but there is no set date. I read the partial draft on the author’s website. I just love reading what Edward is thinking and feeling.

Robert is the perfect Edward — I love him / his character. I told my husband last night I wish vampires were real — well the good ones — just like Edward and his family. And gee who wouldn’t want to stay 17 forever? No ageing no sleeping or getting tired. Wow — Except I’m in my forties so, I can only dream.

I love it! All these Twilight Moms! I too was a late comer to these books, I started reading them last August, and I read all 4 books in less than 2 weeks. I have since read them all again multiple times! Stephenie’s characters speak to our hearts, Edward is the perfect man, he treats Bella the way women wish to be treated. I was re-reading New Moon the other night and there is a part where he is trying to convince her that he won’t leave her again and he is telling her how much he loves her and it almost made me cry! Those are the words that all women want to hear. Bella is the insecure, vulnerable person who lives in all of us, she feels unworthy of such love, which makes her even more lovable to Edward. I love these books, right now I don’t think I will ever tire of them!

  14. jordan responded:

my mom’s a twilight mom she seen the movie more than i have and i’m a huge fan she finally decidied to read the books…and she’ll come and steal my series were fighting right now because she wants to read it but i’m reading it.

  15. Marlena responded:

I’m 45 and addicted to the whole Twilight Saga and Rob. Twilight gave me a escape from life’s everday rituals. I’ve been happily married for 25 years. And this is the first time in my life that I had a crush on a actor. I love Rob so much! And not just because he played Edward. But because he seems like such a down to earth guy, even though he has the most talent I ever saw.
My myspace is practically devoted to Rob with over 400 photos, lol……I find myself buying magazines with him in them. Looking for Youtube videos and anything that features him.
I’ve got twiight t-shirts, the tonner dolls, perfume, carrying case, candy hearts, film cells,etc…..
I have to agree with the mom from Australia who said she feels protective of Rob. So do I. I can’t stand anyone saying anything negative about him. I get upset and have to respond to them.
I know people don’t get my addiction, but I don’t get people who can’t see what a talent Robert Pattinson is. He’s a great actor, singer, musician and a great person. He’s beautiful on the inside as well as the outside. If any of you moms are on myspace, I would love a friend request from you. I love meeting Twi-Mom’s…..here is a link to my page http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=48141384
