TA TALKS BACK: EDWARD - IN LOVE OR ADDICTED??

TA Forum member Southern_Twihard shared her thoughts on love and addiction related to the Twilight series.
Think back to…Edward explaining to Bella in Twilight that she was his personal brand of heroine…Edward’s thoughts in Midnight Sun revealing the physical impact that Bella had on him…Edward revealing to Bella in New Moon (I think) that Emmett also had a “la tua cantante” but that she became a McEmmett Happy Meal.Well, those passages collectively made me wonder… Did Edward fall in love with Bella in Twilight? OR Did he convince himself that it was love when, in reality, he was just addicted to her — he “experimented” with this addictive “substance” and then spent all of his time and energy getting as much of her as possible regardless of consequences?
I completely forgot about this weird idea of mine until recently, when I had lunch with a good friend who is a licensed addiction counselor. I asked her: “If Edward came into your clinic, would you qualify him as an addict?”

Well, if this were really how it happened the minute she became a vampire wouldn’t he have stopped loving her? Since the pull/addiction to her blood was no longer there what would be his draw to her? I don’t really see it as an addiction though.. I see it more as a torture he puts himself to be with her because she’s so unique to him. Also, if it were merely an addiction he wouldn’t have been able to stop himself from finishing her off when James bit her.
Just my opinions here but addiction or not if someone cared about me as much as Edward does that would be amazing! Seriously, who stays with someone that agrees to marry you and then kisses someone else?? True love and devotion right there!
I think when you fall deeply in love with someone there is a certain level of addiction to that love. You just simply can’t get enough, and it’s not sexual, it’s just that you cannot get enough of having that person around. you miss them terribly when they aren’t there.
I fell in love with someone and i felt that way and so did he. When he and i split for a few days we both felt as though a part of us was missing, so we got back together and have been for almost 8 years.
We do everything together and when we are apart, we text alot and mis each other. We both call the favorite part of the day when we go home and snuggle on the couch. We really don’t do much without each other and are each other’s best friends.
So, I believe that Edward is addicted and deeply in love with Bella and vice versa.

I think it is difficult to put your self into the mind of a vampire. I imagine that Edward was more confused by his own mixed feelings, but I believe that he fell in love with Bella from the very beginning. Poor guy; being 17, a teenager, for about 100 years! How would he even know what he was feeling, when love finally hits him? No, addiction is just a “metaphor” for what he feels, in my opinion.
I don’t think there is much of a difference between that kind of whole hearted obsessive love and addiction. The love between Edward and Bella is “not of this world” so I don’t think it can be qualified in rational terms. He loves her and he is addicted to her and that is they way it should be for them.
I don’t think he understood what was happening to him when he first caught her scent. He had never been in love, felt desire or had ‘intimate relations’ so he did not recognize that this extreme desire for Bella’s blood was in fact the desire he would feel in for his first true love. It was love at first ’scent’ if you will. And for her, love at first sight. An instant mutual response.

Yeah he first relize how different he was by her scent, but that just made it come on further into the amazing realationship

cos he could have just ate her :S or left her… or turned her into a vampire straight away but he didnt did he…NO he didnt! he wanted her to hav a normal human life, thats why he left in New Moon, but he couldnt be away from her… it was killing him. so he came back COS he LOVES Bella.
he fell inlove with her, he was facinated with her. her blush, her eyes and her all together.
I don’t think so because why would someone put themselves through so much physical pain to be with someone if he didn’t luv her. And why would he stay with her after she was avampire her sent wouyld be gone so there wouldn’t be any reason for him to be addicted to her.
i think he was addicted to bella then through time he grew to love her.

maybe it was a whole chemistry thing. cause bella’s bloo was like his ‘personal brand of herion’ maybe that was a sign that they were destined to be together and then fall in love..etc?
i think he is in love and it is just hard for him cause he is a vampire and really cant help smelling her sent but i mean if you looked past that as many times as he has saved her and kisses he on the four head i think he truly loves her or y elase would he turn her into a vampire and still be with her and love her
hmm… an interesting idea. I’m not sure what my opinion is. I don’t really know if it’s possible to fall in love with someone that fast, but it makes for a good story
