BOX OFFICE PROPHETS – HOW WELL WILL TWILIGHT DO?

Posted October 31st, 2008 By: Team Switzerland 22 Comments »

BoxOfficeProphets.com has written an interesting “prophecy” on how well they think Twilight will do at the box office. They delve into book sales and a few other statistics to make their decision, and it seems as though some of their staff has mixed opinions. Some have high hopes, and some aren’t quite convinced yet.

Here’s a bit of what they had to say:

What are you expecting from the box office performance of Twilight?

Jason Dean: As a data point, there are more than a few over 18-year-olds that have heard of the Twilight series and are desperately looking forward to the opening.

Jason Lee: A big, big, big part of me sincerely doubts that this movie takes off at the box-office. I know that David has posted information proving me wrong, but I just don’t see the audience for this films skewing wider than your typical fan who goes to see teen-slasher films. The casting of the film and the perceived quality (based on the trailer) will hold it back, I think.

I know that the books sales indicate otherwise, but I would be very surprised to see this film open above $20 million. I think mid-teens is about where it’ll end up.

Les Winan: I see it doing $50+ million minimum. $75 million wouldn’t shock me. My wife, sister, sister-in-law and grandmother are all counting the days.

Daron Aldridge: I fall very much into that over 18 demographic that had never heard of the title, series or author until it showed up on the cover of my Entertainment Weekly. This reminds me of the Eragon from a couple years ago, which was also based upon a novel that skewed young (regardless of the arguably derivative literary merits of Christopher Paolini), opened in the winter holiday season, and had questionable quality but as rabid fandom. That one underperformed domestically opening to $23.2 million. Adjusted for inflation, Eragon earned $25.1 million. So, I can see this one outperforming Tolkien-lite but not by much. I am going with about a guess of a $35 million opening.

Jim Van Nest: Until about three months ago, I’d never heard of Twilight. I met one 14 year-old girl (a friend’s daughter, ya pervs) who is 100% addicted. Since that day, it’s everywhere I go. The best comparisons I can come up with are the Potter series and possibly The Da Vinci Code…though both of these don’t fit AS well as they’re WAY bigger than Bella Swan. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone opened over $90 million in 2001, but there were already four books and they’d been in circulation for four years or so. Da Vinci opened to $77 million, but it had the controversy thing going for it, as well as Tom Hanks and it skewed toward people who can actually drive themselves to theaters.

Aside from all that is the trailer for Twilight, which definitely left me just “whelmed.” They could have told me it was a commercial for the latest CW show and I’d have believed it. Based on the luke-warm trailer and the opening takes of some books that are MUCH larger than this one, I can’t help but think that this opens in the $33 million range, with a ceiling of about $40 million. While this has a gazillion teenage girls excited, I just don’t think that’s a broad enough demographic to push this into the upper echelon of book adaptation openings.

Pete Kilmer: After talking with some of my female friends who are teachers and librarians I think this movie will hit at least $50 million for an opening weekend. All of their friends are super excited about it.

I think a lot of the staffers are narrowing down the age range of Twilighters quite a bit. Yes, a lot of younger people do like the books (after all, they are targeted for a YA audience), but I think you have blinders on if you don’t recognize how great the age range is. Having said that, I think Twilight will shock a lot of people at the box office. Even though they have a huge marketing campaign going on, I think people still underestimate it’s ability to appeal to a large audience.

What do you guys think: Do you think they have some valid points in their arguments? And how well do YOU think the movie will do on opening weekend?

im surprised they seem to think teeneage girls are the only people who plan to see the movie. my mother and all of her friends are just as excited as i am and counting down the day as well! not to mention how many people will go more than once

Okay…that $20 million remark is practically an insult. With the fan base that this thing has it’s practically a sure bet that it’ll bring in WAY more. I ESTIMATE around $50 million, and I think I’m low-balling it. Hello?! I’ve already bought tickets for the midnight showing AND the morning after, because I KNOW I’m going to want to see it again right away! Plus, I’m seeing it a couple more times after that because there other fan friends of mine that want to go with me. So I’m dedicating 4 showings most likely, lol.

  • Ana

Oh and BTW, I’M 20! The people i’m going with are in the 20-something range as well!

  • kristine89

I don’t think twilight is restricted to the teenage audience. My friends and I are in the 20-30 range and I know we are all looking forward to it. My guess is it will open in the 30mil to 40mil range which I still think is very good, considering the budget was supposedly only 37 million.

I think the main restriction is that the movie will primarily have a female audience. I don’t know any men who are remotely interested in the film. I think those who will go will be dragged their by their girlfriends, like mine :lol

  • Midori

I think Twilight is for all ages groups. I believe it will do very well in the box office. Even guys are reading this book. I’m in the 20+ bracket and I’m looking forward to it! I’ve read all the books, so now I want to see the scenes on screen. For what I’ve seen on Rob, he totally gets into his character as a vampire. As for Kristen, I’ll reserve my opinion after I see the movie. She doesn’t do to well with interviews. I’m such a Twilight fan that I will go more than once to see it.

I think Twilight is going to be seen by all ages of women and men. I am 56 and my daughters are 34,30 and 24. We all read the series several times and passed it on to our friends. My 45 year old friend introduced me to Twilight. I think Twilight is going to have a big opening weekend. I know a lot of people who are pre buying their tickets. That doesn’t happen with many movies. Can’t wait for the big release!

Sorry, I think a lot of people are under estimating the amount of guys who have read this series. My husband is addicted to it, he went to work so tired from being up reading till 3 one morning that a co worker asked why he hadn’t slept. When my husband said he had been reading, the guy immediately said” Your reading Twilight aren’t you?” My husband was shocked that he had been found out so quickly and the guy had admitted to reading the whole series twice! These are 30ish construction/trades guys. Guys have read the series, because they have girl friends/wives that have made them, they are so sick of hearing about Edward they want to find out what is so great about this guy for themselves or they just get curious.Guys just don’t openly admit they have read it.

I just want to start out by saying that I know many many people who are over the age of 20 who are very excited about the movie. Actually, I know many people who are over the age of 30 who are excited, myself included. Personally, I think the movie is going to do very well opening weekend. For me though, I fell in love with the characters by reading the books, thanks to the wonderful descriptive writing style of Stephenie Meyer. I will be thinking of those descriptions while I am watching the movie. Even if I hadn’t read the books, I would still go and see the movie. I don’t think it would mean as much though. I would probably leave the movie thinking it was just a really good love story.

  • unbearable

well, let’s go surprise these people! They won’t see it coming!
(I’m in my thirties and all my friends are coming with me to see it!)

  • christina

Shows how much they know about Twilight.
    We’ll prove them wrong ;)

  • kristine89

I just read the source article in its entirety. A lot of the reviewers commented on the lower budget and poor production values. That discouraged me a bit, mainly because I showed the trailers to my brother who has never heard of twilight- and he said the third trailer looked “cool” but the others reminded him of a buffy episode. That kind of disappointed me.

I do wish that the filmakers had been given a bigger budget. I understand why they didn’t – the film was apparently designed to be more of an indie film not a blockbuster. I think the actors and the director are very talentd, but I would hate for the movie to underperform because it doesn’t have the “wow” visuals of harry potter and the other blockbusters we have today.

  • Tippy

Okay, are these people living under rocks or something? As a twenty-something it is insulting to me to have people just assume that only teenage girls are interested in this movie or the books! We have AWESOME Twi-guys right here on TA, and we have people in their 40′s on here, as well. I predict that the movie will clear at LEAST $50 million it’s opening weekend, and wouldn’t be surprised to see it do considerably more. These people REALLY need to do their homework. Twilight is the new I Ching, the new world doctrine, and they better get educated!!!

  • Twerd

boy, are they in for a shock. Im surprised at how people underestimate not only the amount of people who read the series, but age groups and gender as well.
Yes, the book was intended for young adults, but i know mothers who cant get enough and boys who are equally obsessed. And im sure it goes beyond 15 year old squealing girls.
The movie will be an absolute HIT. im estimating at least $50 million, however im betting on it being more. People just dont understand the effect this book has on people! The movie will be equally as great!!

  • vamplvr

Ok – I am 33. I read all 4 books in a week and a half. I have already purchased tickets to the midnight showing on opening day, and tickets for the next day for my 50-something mother, my 46 year old aunt, a friend of my mothers’s who is mid-50′s…and my 23 year old cousin. We keep talking about how SICK we are, because instead of worrying about who wins the presidential election on Tuesday, we are worried that we may not get to the store in time to get a soundtrack cd!! So..Jason Lee is WAY off when he says that the typical viewer will be the person who goes to see teen slasher films. I wouldn’t be caught dead at a teen slasher film, and neither would any of the people I’m going to this movie with.

  • cullenista

I hate it when these reporters and writers underestimate the age range and mass appeal of the Twilight story. I’m 42. I was introduced to the series by a 34 year old Just because the book was published as young-adult the reviewers automatically assume that only young adults will be attending the movie opening and enjoy the story. Where’s the research? Where’s the imagination?
How many other movies offer advance ticket sales 20+ days in advance. I predict that opening weekend will be sold out well before Nov 21. I predict $50 million plus for opening weekend, and these figures will be reached well before Nov 21. (official prediction 10 days before). I don’t enjoy big-budget hollywood movies anyway. They are all special effects and no realism. The mass appeal of the Twilight story is the realism of the love story, principal and minor characters and the setting. The vampire aspect adds the conflict to the story – that’s all.
I like the fact that this monster-hit of a movie was made on a small budget. The Blair Witch Project was ruined when it went from small budget to the big budget hollywood movie. And I can think of several movies were the sequel sucked because Hollywood happened to it. I hope this doesn’t happen to New Moon and the other sequels.
Ii guess one could say that I have very strong opinions on this subject.

  • Kirstyn

I know that twilight doesnt really fall strictly into that age group that they keep stressing on and i kind of am part of that age group, being 18, i still think that they really underestimate the YA audience. Not only are they, or rather we, persistent and a tad bit obsessive, we know how to convince a lot of people. For instance, a lot of my cousins started reading it already and are excited for the movie and though my mom and my sister hasnt read it yet, theyre already planning on watching. Aside from family, there are a lot of people we could still convince to watching, like our classmates, even guy classmates. People are getting curious and a lot of these curious people are bound to watch the movie.

  • Crystal

I am 36 and have 12 people going with me to the midnight show on 11/20. Even took 11/21 off for “black Friday”. Going to Irvine’s Imax theater for the first showing and then to other theaters with new friends to each and every showing…yes, you could say we are obsessed, but at least it’s a healthy obsession ;) Pretty sure all the critics minds will be blown by the box office money coming in from this one!! Good thing too, because the more money this one makes, the more likely they will make the other books movies and have better budgets to do so! Everyone cross your fingers and see it more than once ;)

  • kristine89

Wow, is it really showing at the irvine imax? I had better go get my tickets then :lol I didn’t know it was coming out on imax!

  • emmy

OK me and my best friend are crazy about Twilight and we’re 11 and 12. So Twilight will not attract just mid-teens, thank you very much!
I reckon it’ll get atleast $50million, so many people are obsessed with it. Me and my friend are definitely seeing it more than once!

  • ImInCharge

I am much older than the teen generation of fans. But I also have a large circle of friends in the same age range. All over 21+. Some are Twilight Moms as well. I have only came across a few teens who I knew were interested in the books, but the majority of Twilighters were ADULTS.
I have met many MEN and friends fiances’, DADS as well, who referred the books to others. It’s amazing how fast the word of mouth spreads, and this book I swear is a plague. A very addictive one!!
Just for the affecting our lives we’re going out for some Bloody’s Mary’s before the movie!!

  • Matt

I am 18 and MALE! and i LOVED the books. I read them all in about a 2 week time period. I actually had to ask about 20 friends to find 1 that isnt going. Im way excited and as time goes on I worry more and more about getting tickets to the midnight showing

  • Luciee

I cannot wait to see this movie. My entire school has been sporting their “Team Edward” or “Team Jacob” t-shirts and the books are everywhere! I have a friend who is going to see it seven times, all with different groups of friends… This movie is going to be huge.

Let’s prove everyone who thinks otherwise wrong.
I am going to see it at midnight, I cannot wait!
