‘BREAKING DAWN’ LAWSUIT

Many of you have sent us links to the various media outlets who are reporting that Stephenie Meyer is being sued for plagiarism by Jordan Scott, who alleges that Meyer’s book Breaking Dawn contains a “striking and substantial similarity” to Scott’s book, “The Nocturne.”

According to TMZ, Scott’s claims are as follows:

– Both books contain a post-wedding sex scene
– Both books contain a scene about a woman who’s sick because she’s carrying a child with “evil powers”
– Both books contain a scene with the death of the main character’s wife

And according to Scott, the dialogue in all of these scenes — and more — is extremely similar.

Meyer’s reps refuted the claims, stating:

“The claim that ‘Breaking Dawn’ by Stephenie Meyer somehow infringes on an alleged book by someone named Jordan Scott is completely without merit. Neither Stephenie Meyer nor her representatives had any knowledge of this writer or her supposed book prior to this claim.”

(Thanks Leslie)

And in happy Breaking Dawn news, don’t forget: The special edition of Breaking Dawn (which comes complete with a Breaking Dawn concert series DVD, limited edition poster, and more) hits stands on Tuesday, August 4th. You can pre-order here through Amazon, here through Barnes & Noble, here through Borders, and just about anywhere else you can think of.

• MTV comments on the article here.
• The Hollywood Reporter discusses why the lawsuit won’t hold up well in court here.

EDIT: Our awesome friends over at the Twilight Lexicon have foiled the unjustly lawsuit by some interesting digging and research. Check out their post explaining why this claim is false here.

USA TODAY: ‘TWILIGHT’ SERIES ECLIPSES POTTER RECORDS

USA Today has a very cool new article highlighting the sales of the Twilight series, the records the series has managed to hold onto, and how the books don’t look like they’re willing to let go of the best seller’s list anytime soon.

Stephenie Meyer’s four-book Twilight series has sunk its fangs into USA TODAY’s Best-Selling Books list — with no signs of letting go. Meyer’s domination of the list for the past 12 months has smashed records that until now had belonged to J.K. Rowling.
Breaking Dawn, the fourth book in the teen-vampire romance series, entered the list at No. 1 on Aug. 2, 2008. Its sales and those of Twilight, New Moon and Eclipse, the first three books, have remained staggering.

This week, Meyer’s novels are Nos. 4, 5, 6 and 7 on USA TODAY’s list.

Rowling, overall, has sold more books than Meyer — her seven-book series about boy wizard Harry Potter has 143 million copies in print in the USA, while Meyer has sold 40 million copies of her four books. But Rowling can’t match Meyer’s control of the list.

Breaking Dawn and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the two authors’ fourth installments, entered the list at No. 1, but Meyer’s series has had more staying power.

The Twilight books have stayed in the list’s top 10 for 52 consecutive weeks. They held the first four spots a total of 13 weeks in the past year.

Rowling’s first four Potter books were top 10 for 13 consecutive weeks, 24 weeks total, for the first year after Goblet’s publication and held the first four spots for two weeks.

Breaking Dawn broke the first-day sales record for publisher Hachette at 1.3 million copies.

Based on aggressive marketing of Meyer’s series, this November’s release of the film version of New Moon and the upcoming holiday gift-buying season, Twilight books could dominate the list well into 2010.

(Thanks Hugz)

Are you surprised at these statistics? How long do you think the series will continue to dominate the book charts?

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY ‘BREAKING DAWN’!

It’s hard to believe, but today marks the one year anniversary that Breaking Dawn was released! In the weeks leading up to the much anticipated fourth and final book, Stephenie Meyer released daily quotes for the book (check them out here), the morning before the release the world was appropriately met with an Eclipse (read more here), and the night before the release TA hit up some Breaking Dawn book release parties (check out video here). 3.7 million copies of Breaking Dawn were sold in the wee hours of the morning on August 2nd and marked the largest first-day sales record for The Hachette Book Group.

Since then, Breaking Dawn has continued to break records and bring in awards - even winning the award for “Children’s Book of the Year” at the Galaxy British Book Awards. It may have marked the end of the Twilight saga and Bella and Edward’s story, but you can bet we’ll never lose appreciation for the series and that final book.

So from all of us here at Twilighters Anonymous, Happy Anniversary Breaking Dawn!

…And don’t forget: The special edition of Breaking Dawn (which comes complete with a Breaking Dawn concert series DVD, limited edition poster, and more) hits stands on Tuesday, August 4th. You can pre-order here through Amazon, here through Barnes & Noble, here through Borders, and just about anywhere else you can think of.

E! ONLINE: ‘TWILIGHT’ CAST SPILLS ‘BREAKING DAWN’ DETAILS

E! Online recently caught up with some of the Twilight cast members to talk about a possible fourth movie in the franchise, and while one caster said he’s only signed on for three, another member sang a different tune:

“I haven’t seen a page,” exclaimed Ashley Greene, who’s heading back up to Vancouver to shoot the third Twi flick this summer.

Even though we’re getting a tad ahead of ourselves, we tried to pry any dirt out of Ashley and Billy Burke last weekend on what’s in store for the final movie.

Read on:

“All I know is that, as of now, I only signed on to do three,” B.B. told us. Coyly played Billy.

But Breaking Dawn isn’t exactly as far away as you all would think.

“We’re going to start right after Eclipse,” says Ash.

So will we see any repeat directors for the fourth film?

“I don’t think so,” says Ms. Greene. “[Eclipse director] David [Slade] and [New Moon director] Chris [Weitz] will both be busy in postproduction, and Catherine [Hardwicke] will be doing Hamlet.”

And as much as everyone adored Chris, that’s not going to happen because of “scheduling conflicts,” we’re told.

SOURCE

I find this all very interesting. I would (sorry in advance) like to point out that there is no official confirmation that the fourth film will be made, and that we should all just sit tight until we hear any final word from Summit Entertainment. Aside from that though, I’ll just say that you can find me weeping in the corner that Chris Weitz’s reported scheduling conflicts may keep him from returning for Breaking Dawn.

What do you think of this new report? Who would you like to see direct the fourth film if it happens?

LA TIMES: WHO SHOULD BE THE ‘BREAKING DAWN’ DIRECTOR?

Ever since Robert Pattinson confirmed his commitment to a Breaking Dawn movie yesterday, discussion has been swirling like crazy. One major topic, regarding the possibilities of directors, has just been touched on by the LA Times. They delve into who they think would be a good match for the final film:

Who is worthy of such a challenge? We’ve thought of six so far….

Peter Jackson: The “Lord of the Rings” series — “The Fellowship of the Ring,” “The Two Towers” and “The Return of the King” — and “King Kong”

The New Zealander carries emotional story lines and dialogue to full tilt. With the help of the Weta Workshop and his Oscar-winning friend Richard Taylor, the makeup and design effects would be a cinch.

Guillermo del Toro: “Pan’s Labyrinth,” “Hellboy,” “Hellboy II: The Golden Army” and “The Hobbit”

With “Hellboy,” he dressed a grown man in latex prosthetics for a movable and realistic look and then commissioned dozens of individual creatures for “Hellboy II.” A dozen or so werewolves and some vampires would be a walk in the park for this director, who’s overseeing “The Hobbit” next.

Len Wiseman: “Underworld,” “Underworld: Evolution” and “Live Free or Die Hard”

If Slade (“30 Days of Night”) can direct “Eclipse,” then Wiseman could definitely lend his vampire and werewolf experience to “Breaking Dawn.” He would have to leave the goth garb behind, but bringing along his wife, Kate Beckinsale, for a vamp cameo would be even better.

Andrew Adamson: “Shrek,” “Shrek 2,” “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” and “Prince Caspian.”

Mixing fantasy with reality is his forte, which would be a natural progression from what we’ve seen so far. From a live-action Mr. Tumnus (James McAvoy) to the computer-generated Aslan, Adamson’s got enough tricks up his sleeve to make Renesmee look real.

Sam Raimi: “Spider-Man” 1-4, “Drag Me to Hell,” “The Evil Dead” and “Army of Darkness”

Raimi is where horror meets sci-fi, and he doesn’t shy away from romance. His humor and camp could do wonders with Jacob’s sometimes snarky attitude in the final book. He’s also the most qualified for Bella’s gut-wrenching birth scene.

Alfonso Cuarón: “Great Expectations,” “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban,” “Paris, je t’aime” and “Children of Men”

A fav director among the Harry Potter filmmakers, he was also the one to bring Lupin (a.k.a. the werewolf prof) to the big screen. CuarĂłn disrobed (in the most innocent sense) the teens and made them more relatable to audiences, which “Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer would surely appreciate.

SOURCE

Wow, they’re throwing out some pretty big names. I think I would be happy with most of the directors they suggested, but I am a little bit biased and I’m crossing my fingers that Chris Weitz will be brought back for the fourth and final film. We haven’t seen much of what he’s done so far, but I’ve been thrilled with everything he’s put forward so far.

What do you think of their suggestions? Would you be happy with any of the directors listed above or do you have someone else in mind who you’d rather see direct the film?

THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER: ROBERT PATTINSON HAS ‘BREAKING’ NEWS

The Hollywood Reporter caught up with Robert Pattinson at the Cannes Film Festival where he had some ‘Breaking’ (yes, notice the horrible pun) news about the fourth film in the Twilight saga:

Robert Pattinson, who shot to stardom in “Twilight” and is now filming the second and third movies in the franchise, confirmed Tuesday in Cannes that there will be a fourth installment of the vampire franchise based on the book “Breaking Dawn.”

Pattinson told The Hollywood Reporter that he is committed to starring in the final outing to date but doesn’t know when backers Summit Entertainment will begin production because of the actor’s jam-packed shooting schedule.

Fans have been hoping for a movie version of the fourth novel from Stephenie Meyer’s best-sellers, so Pattinson’s commitment is the biggest fillip yet. The fourth book (caution — spoiler alert) centers on Bella and Edward’s marriage and her subsequent pregnancy.

Dropping in on the Croisette on the way to shooting the final four days of “New Moon” in Italy on Friday, Pattinson said he is heading back to Vancouver in October to finish up “Twilight: Eclipse,” the third installment. In between, the British actor, who turned 23 last week, plans to star in “Remember Me,” which Summit also is producing.

The script adaptation for “New Moon” beefs up his character’s role considerably — in the book, Edward is a “a voice in Bella’s head,” he said.

Said Pattinson, laughing: “You’re playing a figment in Bella’s imagination so I was trying to do it in a 2-D way. I hope it doesn’t translate onscreen as being boring.” The hardworking actor is taking a few days off after completing “New Moon” before the start of the “Remember Me” shoot. He plans three days off after an eight-week planned shoot for “Remember Me” before finishing “Eclipse” before October.

Pattinson said “Remember Me” is very difficult to describe but said it is very much about him and, after reading the script last summer, felt a connection with it. The main protagonist is a 23-year-old man who spends six weeks after meeting someone working out if he is in love or not.

So though Rob hinted at a fourth movie, and a fourth seems likely at this point anyway, I still won’t believe it until I hear it from Summit. Rob’s schedule sounds pretty packed, though. I hope he’s taking enough time off in between films to regain his sanity. It’s nice that he’s being offered so many roles, but it seems so tightly packed in a short amount of time.

What do you think of this news? Do you feel like this cements a Breaking Dawn movie or will you wait until Summit confirms it to get your hopes up?

THE WRAP: ‘BREAKING DAWN’S’ EARLY GREENLIGHT

The Wrap is reporting that a ‘Breaking Dawn’ movie is, in fact, in the works. And, not only do they state that the film is in the works, they also go on to say that ‘Eclipse’ is in planning stages, and ‘Breaking Dawn’ will begin production in Spring of 2010. Read below for more details:

The fourth and final film in the “Twilight” teen vampire series is in the works, TheWrap has learned.

With the sequel to the blockbuster hit “New Moon” now filming in Vancouver and its sequel, “Eclipse,” already deep in the planning stages, an individual close to the production has told TheWrap that work on the fourth and final in the series, “Breaking Dawn,” will start in late spring 2010.

Summit Entertainment spokesman Paul Pflug declined to confirm or deny the report, saying only, “Summit has no comment on that rumor at this time.”

The planning for “Twilight” IV means that the blockbuster series based on Stephenie Meyer’s popular vampire drama has come to dominate the production schedule of Summit Entertainment.

It also means that the obsessive fan base of the movies can expect to revel in no fewer than three full-length “Twilight Saga” films — going from November of this year through the end of 2010.

But a Summit executive who declined to be identified said that there was no production schedule for “Breaking Dawn,” and no current plans to shoot in Vancouver.

“New Moon” is scheduled for release on Nov. 20, while “Eclipse” has a tentative release date of June 2010. A fourth in the series would logically be scheduled for release before the end of next year.

I’m sure we all expected a ‘Breaking Dawn’ movie (even the cast did), but hearing this makes it more real! Of course, Summit didn’t confirm or deny these rumors, so there’s no saying that it’s true, but let’s cross our fingers that this rumor is true! Okay, and I love the saga and can’t wait to see the movies, but I think I would be sad to have them all end next year.

How do you feel about this news? Does the timeline worry you? Would you prefer the movies all come out before the end of next year, or would you prefer that they draw them out?
