CANMAG.COM - PETER FACINELLI ON TWILIGHT
CANMAG.COM - Peter Facinelli underwent a drastic transformation to play Dr. Carlyle Cullen in Twilight. It wasn’t a matter of inhuman makeup appliances, but rather a realistic pale, blonde look that took time and effort.
“Well, we did like a week of testing all different kinds of makeup so the makeup team was phenomenal,” Facinelli said. “The actors were very patient as we went. We worked it out but they had some kind of gadget from Japan and it was like an ionizer, and it was weird because as they put the makeup on you, if they touched you, you’d get shocked. So it was one of those things that you had to be very careful but it was early in the morning, so if you did get shocked, it kind of woke you up a little bit. So that was fun but that was the transformation with the makeup for me.”It was pretty convincing too, as long as they kept the maintenance up. “It was blonde in a bottle and that took a good day at the salon. Some of us had to go back to the salon more than others but with the touch ups, with the roots it was a lot of maintenance, high maintenance but it was a fun transformation and it was fun to see myself looking so differently with the contact lenses and the light skin. I remember getting washed up at the end of the night and someone would see me and they didn’t know that I’d just played Dr. Cullen all day long. They were like, ‘That, that was you?’ So that was funny.”

Facinelli thinks the transformations of himself and costars reflects the skill with which director Catherine Hardwicke cast the film. “If you had blonde hair, you dyed it brown. If you had brown hair you dyed it blonde. That was Catherine saying she has a vision. ‘These are actors that have the qualities of these characters that I’m looking for and I can make them look like the characters from the book.’ And she did that. That was really nice. Once people saw the transformation, then they came on board but at first none of us looked like our characters.”As the leader of the Cullen vampire clan, Facinelli felt a bit of fatherly love for his on screen children. “We spent a lot of time together in rehearsals, a lot of time helping each other. I think there’s a bond there because we all respected each other as actors and we all respected each other as people and we really all enjoy each other’s company. And I mean, when I see them, they put a smile on my face. I actually fell in love like a family love for all of the Cullens and for Bella and for Jacob. When I see this cast, it makes me happy. I just want to go over and give them a hug. I felt like that’s how it was while we were shooting. I enjoy them.”

I think Catherine did a fairly good job on hair and make-up for Carlisle and Rosalie. It was weird seeing Peter so blonde but it worked out well in my opinion. What do you think of the make-up in Twilight? Crappy? Mediocre? Good?

In the end I think the make-up was very well done. And the transformation of these actors was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. I especially loved Carlisle, he looked just like I would imagine Carlisle to be. When he first storde into that hospital he looked jsut as Bella had described in the book, the most gorgeous male model you’ll find. And yet, he had Carlisle’s compassion down to the T. Ugh! He was PERFECT! I loved him! I’ve seen the movie 5 times and counting, and I STILL have trouble breathing whenever Carlisle makes his first entrance! Well…ALL of the Cullen men for that matter!
That’s so awesome to hear. I think it shows in the film that he has a fatherly love for them. I thought he did an excellent job playing Carlisle. The make-up crew did an amazing job too.
he suits Carlisle’s role! and his makeup is flawless =D
