ARTICLES ABOUT CATHERINE HARDWICKE NOT DIRECTING NEW MOON

Posted December 8th, 2008 By: flick 21 Comments »

Since the news came out yesterday that Catherine Hardwicke is not directing New Moon, several articles were posted online. Here are a few:

From MSN:

“I am sorry that due to timing I will not have the opportunity to direct ‘New Moon,’” Hardwicke said. “Directing ‘Twilight’ has been one of the great experiences of my life, and I am grateful to the fans for their passionate support of the film. I wish everyone at Summit the best with the sequel — it is a great story.”

From Mania:

The sequel, whose start date has not yet been set but is rumored for March 2009, will reunite writer Melissa Rosenberg and actors Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. Summit has not named a new director, but it is likely to want to move relatively quickly on the sequel after the original earned nearly $139 million in three weeks of release.

The Guardian UK posted this:

“Catherine did an incredible job in helping us to launch the Twilight franchise, and we thank her for all of her efforts and we very much hope to work with her on future Summit projects,” said the company’s production president Erik Feig. “We as a studio have a mandate to bring the next instalment in the franchise to the big screen in a timely fashion so that fans can get more of Edward, Bella and all of the characters that Stephenie Meyer has created.”

Thanks for those, Shae!

The LA Times wrote the following:

This breaking news is gonna mean that Hardwicke will going to have to discuss her being unceremoniously dumped — and the real reasons why — on the just-started European press tour.

Even Perez Hilton wrote about Catherine:

It was a timing issue, says the report. The studio wants to rush the movie out in 2009 and wasn’t willing to give Hardwicke the time that she wanted to develop the sequel script.

I’m still sad Catherine isn’t directing New Moon. Who is your choice (apart from Catherine) to direct New Moon?

I have a heavy, sinking feeling we’re going to get rushed and cheesy sequels. Not good.

  • Ana

I’m still sad as well, but not as sad as I’ll be if New Moon doesn’t get the budget it deserves. That’s what a lot of people don’t seem to grasp. The can bring on Sofia-Freaking-Coppola, but if they get the budget that Twilight got, we are NOT going to do very well in New Moon. We’ll be shuttering in agony everytime we see our Quilete boys shape-shifting into werewolves. Mr. Friedman, CEO Summit, still doesn’t see the reason behind why Twilight needed a bigger budget, and he doesn’t see why New Moon needs it either. THAT is the REAL reason why Catherine didn’t get the job, because she wanted a bigger budget, and I think EVERYONE (Pro-Catherine Hardwicke or Not) can agree that she was 100% in the right when it comes to that argument.

So my opinion, a new director? Okay, that’s fine. Maybe they’ll have a different angle and in the end make it better. But it HAS to be a FEMALE director. I’m NOT sexist or anything but I do not think a male director will really bring the story its essence of emotion.

Secondly, I will NOT have a sigh of relief until I know that the budget for New Moon is substantial.

I think that Alfonso Cuarón will do the job perfectly.
New Moon is a dark and tragic book. Is one of the darkest
phases of Bella. Alfonso Cuarón is the right director. He
directed Harry’s darkest movie “Harry Potter and the Prisoner
of Azkaban” and did an amazing job. But then again, it’s only an opinion. No hate intended towards Hardwicke.

  • Brittany

I was thinking Alfonso Cuaron (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban) or Tim Burton.

  • melisa

i am ver disturbed by the fact that catherine hardwick is not directing new moon, its party her direction that made the movie as close to the book as it was, i would really hate it if the new moon is 90% percent CGI, im not saying its all bad but it looks so… fake, i sincerely hope that the new director will stay true to catherine and stephanies vision. and a bigger budget is a total must, i mean the werewolves and the porsh and the italy scenes and suff are going to take a little more than twilight, seriously

  • Emerald

If Tim Burton directs New Moon I will NOT see it. I swear to the internet, I will not see another Tim Burton film.

To say that a male director “can’t bring out the emotion” is effing stupid. Titanic was directed by a man. So was Million Dollar Baby, The Notebook, A Walk to Remember, Where The Red Fern Grows, and pretty much every other tearjerker. News flash, Ana: saying a man shouldn’t be hired as director because he wouldn’t do as good of a job in brining the story “its essence of emotion” is just as sexist as saying that about a woman. Men run Hollywood, and almost every thing you’ve ever watched on TV or in the movies was written and directed by men.

I don’t give a crap if the director of New Moon is male. I just want him to be better than Hardwicke.

I am bummed that Catherine won’t be directing the movie. I have read articles and seen her on-site interviews and feel this movie was her baby. While other movies with sequels have been under more than one director and done fine, I am a little hesitant about bringing in someone new for this franchise. What I liked hearing is how she let the actors change some of the wording around so it felt more natural and less cheese and really let them be themselves in their portrayal of the characters. I agree with what someone else said about pushing it out too soon and losing something just to make a buck. As much as I wish they had all been filmed together like Lord of The Rings and released as that was, I would rather wait until it is done right for the fans, and Stephanie’s vision.
My questions are: Why can’t Catherine’s other works be put on hold as this is obviously huge for her career and 2:Why can’t the studio listen to what the fans want and wait for it to be done right?
Are they thinking of bringing back Catherine for the 3rd and 4th movies?

NO, NO, NO! I love Tim Burton and Alfanso Cauron but they are NOT what were looking for. Catherine had it absolutley correct when she kept Forks and it’s occupants in reality. Thats whats awsome about the saga, as fantastical as it is it still feels steeped in reality. You have cell phones, wheezing computers, hip hop booming in the background. No, I cant see Tim Burton doing that, at all. I dont know directors well enough to name them off but we need another Catherine in the sense that they NEED to keep it LOYAL to the books! Melissa already wrote the script…..please dont let her whip off another cheesy script. She left out so much in Twilight, oh well. Everyone take a deep breath, it will be fine. Like Alice says to Bella in Breaking Dawn, Go to your happy place. Mines at the Cullens house in Forks!

  • amanda

ok so i am really not sure about it…Catherine did a really great job with the first one!! you can tell tht from all the interviews tht she really cared about wat she was doing and cared about the fans feelngs. so i really hope tht they get someone tht really cares about the movie just like Catherine did. i am so mad about this, i hope tht even though she will not be directing it…. the movie will still be amazing. we can only hope and watch it.

I heard that Ryan Little was one of the directors already being talked about to helm the next film. The most recent movie he did was “Forever Strong” with Seam Ferris.

  • Midori

I’m sorry to hear that Catherine wouldn’t be directing New Moon. She has a connection with young people. He helped Rob dealing with Twilight. She made sure everything went perfect with Twilight. She was attuned to Twilight and she knew how much it meant to the fans. She loved the storyline of Bella & Edward! I hope the next director will be just as passionate with directing New Moon. This saga is a very special story which has to come across on screen.

I know I am only almost 20, and just a college student, but I fell in LOVE with all of the Twilight books! I am howevwe going to school with a performing arts major among other studies. I feel like there were many things that were… missed in the first movie, little things from what Bella is wearing down to the way Edwar walks (always poised and gentleman-like). I have a personal attachement to the Twilight Saga and can invision everything in my head! I would LOVE to be able to just even have a little input on the New Moon movie! I know that if I said I would direct it would be biting off more than I could chew; however, I would be so honored if someone from the Twilight crew would maybe 1.) See this posting, and 2.) Juat maybe hear me out a little bit… I know this is a complete long shot and I probably sound like an idiot, but this is how passionate I feel about the saga!
    Thank you,
    Jodi Pratt

  • Brandi

PLEASE MAKE SURE THE SCRIPT AND FLOW TO THE SEQUEL ARE NOT SO CHOPPY!!

  • Mia

Before anything else, i just wanna say i love the actors! Kristen is just so gorgeous and Rob is oh wow!(hehe) When I watched Twilight it made me crave for the next one, apart from the fact that I love the series, I wanted to see something much much better. Twilight didn’t reach my expectations. I don’t know if I should blame this to the director. I just want them to make Newmoon a lot and I really mean a LOT much BETTER!

  • bizzimomma

This is a case where I think all of the players–actors, screenwriters, directors, and even audiences–could have grown with experience. Bella and Edward’s relationship matures past the “shiny new toy” phase to the reality (sometimes) bites phase. There is devestating loss, hope, healing, redemption. It is a much more interesting story, all-in-all. It is a shame that Ms. Hardwicke will not be there to grow with it. Still, that does not spell doom for the sequel(s)–as someone else mentioned, other series’ adaptations got welcome new life with a new director. No–the real fear is that they’re in such a darned big hurry. I would rather wait on pins and needles than be hugely disappointed by something slapped together. Summit–TAKE THE TIME to do it right!

  • Louise

I think they should pick a female director, this book is made for girls, and a man wouldn`t get the felling of the book.
They need to choose another woman.
I didn`t see the movie yet, cause here in Brazil it will only arrive December 19. But for what I already see in the trailers and making of Hardwicke appears to be doing an awesome job. It is terrible that they let her go…

I hope that the studio don`t mess New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn just to make money… I will be really pissed if they do this..

  • Brad Alexander

I am a newbie at twilight and quite honestly i love the first movie and im really excited that they are continuing with other movies, but i think we need a bigger budget and i think it will be fine. I think it really does have to be a female director because even i am a guy and dont think a male director can do it, i think this story HAS to be directed by a woman because lets face it guys there are things about women that we will never understand and this story is told from the perspective of a girl teenager and I think a woman director can better bring that story to life, and also I think Stephenie Meyer as a writer has to happen and please DONT CHANGE THE CAST!!!!

  • JT

Did anyone really see the first movie? Regardless of the fact that a movie will almost never do a book justice, the first movie was, in my opinion, awful. Three things could be responsible for an awful movie. 1) Script 2)Director 3) Actors. Now, due to the fact that in other productions Kristen and Robert were very good actors, it is easy to see where the problem lies. Script was iffy (of course it will never compare to the book and they had to do what they could within the time allotted) and the acting was not to these particular actors potential…which makes me feel the Directing of actors and screen shots is where most of the problem was. I am very excited about this new Director as the trailers I have seen already excel way above Twilight’s and the previous work he has done is great!

hi catherine i really need to get into touch with you about breaking dawn. i am aware that you are not directing the movie but i was wondering if there was any way you could help me get a role as one of the vampires who comes at the end of the book to help fight the volturi im a good actress and ive had a lot of practice with performing and acting ive gotten many lead roles in plays and performances. i know it doesnt sound like much but its really important to me and i know you probably get these messages a lot but if you could contact me and i could give you more information! thanks and my name is katelyn this is really important and a huge dream! thank you so very much
