CHRIS WEITZ BEING CONSIDERED FOR DIRECTOR OF NEW MOON??

Posted December 9th, 2008 By: 47 Comments »

Two sources (Perez Hilton and Nikke Finke) are claiming Chris Weitz has been offered the position of directing New Moon. At this point, it’s not confirmed by Summit.

From Perez:

The makers of Twilight, Summit Entertainment, has reportedly offered the sequel director job to Chris Weitz.
In addition to directing About a Boy, Weitz was also one of the producers of American Pie.

Hollywood insiders say Weitz scored the big job because he’s super good friends with Summit’s president of production, Eric Feig.

It’s nice to have friends in high places!

Summit also reportedly liked the job he did directing The Golden Compass, that Nicole Kidman film no one saw.

You’re taking on a dangerous job, Chris.

If you eff the movie up you’ll have an army of teenage girls out for your blood.

From Nikki Finke:

Yes, he’s had tremendous success working with tweens and teens (About A Boy as director and writer, American Pie as producer and uncredited director). But Chris Weitz also did The Golden Compass (as writer and director), and my source says Summit Entertainment liked the look of that even if it didn’t heat up the domestic box office (but did better overseas). I don’t have official confirmation yet that this Twilight sequel offer has gone out to Weitz. But my insider says another reason it came down is because Weitz and Summit’s president of production Eric Feig are longtime pals. The source tells me Weitz is “still considering” the offer to helm New Moon and possibly also Eclipse if the sequel and threequel movie adaptations of Stephenie Meyer’s series of vampire books are made back-to-back. This info follows my news that Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke is off the film franchise.

(thanks kreitman & marina)

Hmmm Chris Weitz? I’m not sure what I think of him. I will say that Perez is right about the fans not liking screw-ups. What do you think of Chris Weitz directing New Moon? Have you considered him already? Do you think he might pass on the offer?

I didn’t even think of him, to be honest. I’m not really “in” with the director thing. I don’t know what to think of him to be honest. All I can say is that, he says he’s “still considering” it, so we can’t make any decisions until Summit has officially realeased something that says who’s the new director. And the fact that they’re considering him because of his work wth CG in The Golden Compass, the movie that FLOPPED, that doesn’t leave a good feeling in my stomach. I don’t know…hopefully he’s not the only one being considered.

  • Hannah

If he’s the guy that directed “the golden compass” doesn’t that mean he’s also the guy who decided to get rid of the end that was already in the book (they filmed it but he wanted to stick it on the beginning of the “next” one). That doesn’t sound to reassuring to me…. the golden compass wasn’t a very faithful adaptation at all.

  • Midori

I’m not familiar with Chris Weitz. If he directed The Golden Compass and it FLOPPED, it doesn’t make me feel good. Whoever directs New Moon has to be compassionate and excited about the movie. They NEED to read the book and understand the intense love story. Bella and Edward love just progresses in the story, of course in New Moon Edward leaves her, but returns and makes their bond stronger.

  • Dara

Omg! I think they could find a better director. The Golden Compass was a good book but the movie made me want to scratch my eyes out. I wouldn’t want it to be the same for New Moon.

  • kimmie cullen

dude i dont kno who he is and Perez is rite if he effs up new moon and eclipse there will be havoc and prolly not pretty things. and they shud pick sum1 who shared cahterines vision and who will do breaking dawn.

  • kittiebeatz (becki)

Chris Weitz? Hmmm, I don’t know. This makes me nervous and kinda mad that it seems he’s only getting the job because he’s friends with the president of production of Summit. I really did like Catherine for the fact that she cared about the books and really tried her best for the fans. I just think Summit didn’t want to let her have more time for the films. They want to get them done fast so they can make money. I feel that the next two are going to be super rushed and be sloppy. I guess we’ll have to wait and see :(

I hope they know if they don’t do it right the fans aren’t going to support the films. And I hope they don’t try to make it some “teen movie”. I miss Catherine, I trust her.

  • goldie007

NO NO NO NO NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ARRRGHHH!!! He’s going to “tween” the movie! I’m not trying to offend “tweens” but you know what I mean. He’s going to trivialize it into another teen movie. And I’m pretty sure that even teenagers won’t appreciate that, especially since the series gets more mature as the movie goes on. Also, I can totally see him filming everything on a green screen…isn’t that what he did with Golden Compass? I didn’t see one real location that was shot!! I wouldn’t be surprised if he shot Rome on green screen instead of ACTUALLY in Italy. AAND!! What does that say about Summit choosing a director because he’s friends with the president, instead of someone who can make NM into?? It’s too bad that Summit is still making the movies, because the choices they’re making do not seem to be for the greater good; I’m sure most of you would agree with me that Melissa Rosenberg (screenwriter) should have been let go before Catherine Hardwicke. Seriously. Arrrgh!!

  • Shandy

I dont know what to think either?
I liked ‘About a boy’ but hated ‘Golden Compass’, ‘American pie’ was silly but quite funny.
I dont like the idea of him getting the job because he has friends in high places though

I was in agreement with people who said that the new directer should be female. I’m not sure a male director could really understand Bella’s viewpoint. Also wont getting a male director just add fuel to the fire that CH’s departure was due to sexist reasons

  • http://myspace.com/sunshinekk Kryskrosscullen

I dont want a guy to direct a movie And i really dont want the guy who directed the golden compass bc that movie sucked sorry but it did I hope the one who directs nm and eclipe needs to read the books and understand what the books are about I hope they can pull it off i dont want stephs books to be bad on the screen I love these books and i want them on the big screen but at the same time i dont want them to ruin it for all of us fans.

  • E

THIS MAKES ME SICK!!! GOLDEN COMPASS THE MOVIE SUCKED! The book was awsome and I swear that if he takes the job and screws it up like he screwed up Golden Compass Im and loads of other fans are going to be so disappointed. This is why I hate Hollywood it doesn’t matter how good u r just whos butt u kiss or hang out with in this case.

  • Miguel

This is very disturbing news… Does anyone know how to contact Summit Entertainment?

  • kristine89

About a boy was great- but it was a small, romantic comedy. Chris Weitz butchered a golden compass which is why it flopped despite having a huge budget and the support of the same studio that was responsible for lotr- new line. I can’t imagine how he could tackle new moon which with summit behind it, will undoubtedly have a much more limited budget. I think it’s ridiculous that they would give it to him just because he is friends with the president. I recognize that Catherine made some mistakes with twilight, but if they are going to hire someone new they should at least get someone who has had a better track record.

  • E

I would like to know how to contact Summit also this is the biggest load of B.S. I’ve heard today! If they give him the movies I can wait to rent them at blockbuster. I know they will turn out like crap and the acters can onlys do so much for a movie. I feel bad for the cast if they have to be directed by this guy. I guess being friends with a movie studio president is the only way 4 him to get work again. :(

  • kerri

Im glad their removing Cathrine for a few reasons, but not to go DOWN to the next worse thing! I hope they arnt using Chris Weitz just because he plays golf with the president of Summit! That would just plain suck! Thats the most rediculous reason I’ve ever heard. Please say it’s a rumor. I hope they dont make this a tween movie! IM 31 FOR PETE SAKE AND IM A TWI-HARD, TOO! They should listen to us fans, read our blogs and take the directon we throw at them. We know what were talking about! SUMMIT, DONT SCREW AROUND WITH NEW MOON! Get someone with a better track record, PLEASE! Someone who will turn the tween dial down and give the story the proper respect it deserves!

  • Susan

This is so BAD! Now I’m really scared.

The Golden Compass was a good book and he destroyed the movie. As for American Pie, that’s right down there with Porky’s in the immature and crass world of movies….not alot of insight or sensitivity in either of of this guy’s works that I’ve seen.

Is Summit trying to destroy Bella and Edward?

  • http://alyahndarkelf.deviantart.com/ H.T.

I think I’ll wait and see before I pass the verdict on Chris Weitz. I was pretty miffed when the ending got cut from the Golden Compass (his explanation was that A: studio didn’t like it and B: early screening audiences were confused), but the Studio did have a heavy hand over him for that movie. Visually, Golden Compass was great and the special effects too, so I guess that’s what they’re going from if they are considering him for director.

As for him being pals with the president of Summit… bleh. :P

  • marli

This is not making me feel very good about the future of the films…i understand wanting to make the movies asap i want them to cause i cant wait to see them but im starting to feel like theyre rushing and that could seriously screw the movies up. None of Chris Weitz’s previous films make me think he could be capable understanding, respecting, and directing New Moon…and Summit needs to show more respect to this series instead of just trying to make money

  • AllisCullen

I read “american pie” and nearly vomited….I hated those movies….

But, Idk, he could be ok….I’m not sure of anyone, though.

  • vamplvr

SERIOUSLY???? This guy couldn’t make a decent movie with 180 MILLION DOLLARS!!!!!!! (golden compass)…WTF???? I honestly am starting to that they really don’t care if they screw it up!!!! Yeah, I’d take the guy who produced a movie where a teenager sticks his d*** in an apple pie, and have him direct one of the most anticipated LOVE STORIES in this DECADE!!!!! My head is going to EXPLODE!!!

  • judy

chris weitz please say your kidding. flop flop flop, please dont do this to twilight and iam not a teenager and i loved twilight.

  • Camellia

I’m with you all on this one. I liked About a Boy, but admittedly the women in the movie were not very strong (in fact they were all crazy and weak depictions of women). If he wrote that, then I’m worried about how he’s going to portray Bella. I never saw The Golden Compass, mostly because I heard it was awful. It worries me that you all say he didn’t stay true to the book. Granted, Melissa Rosenberg is more important in terms of keeping the movie faithful to the books, but the director has to have some sense of how to bring that script to life. I’m not sure he’s the right guy. However, if he thinks he can please the fans – he probably knows that we will be vocal about our concerns – then maybe he’ll step up and make a great movie.

  • she runs with vampires

I agree with Goldie – I don’t want a “Tweened Up” movie – It seems to me that Summit would want someone with better experience to take on a sequel. Someone asked about how to contact Summit, when you get to their site you’ll have to go to the page where the board of directors are and they have e-mail. Trust me, I’ve already been there – everyone should go and make sure that they know how much we love our story and our precious characters. We’re all like mothers protecting our young here.
I thought that Stephenie would have a hand in this too, wouldn’t she ultimately want someone with an appreciation for the story? One of the reasons I liked Catherine so much was because she had read and appreciated the books…
I vaguely remember “about a boy” and “American Pie” was just embarrassing and really immature. These characters deserve justice and greatness. Please bring a good storyteller. What about Christopher Columbus? Do you think he’d do it? I like him.

  • Ana

She runs with vampires: which website did you go to? I went to summit-ent.com, and I went to the “About Us” section and clicked on the executive team and they don’t have their e-mails on there.

  • wunder

Take Weitz’s amazing character study from About a Boy (a great movie and also adapted from a book) and fantastic action from Golden Compass (overall movie aside), and I think that makes for a great combo for New Moon. Color me an optimist, but it could really work.

  • twilightfan14

This sucks and not in a good way. I firmly believe New Moon needs to be directed by a woman. I have seen About A Boy-it was good but the female characters in it were all weak. American Pie was very funny but New Moon is not a comedy and it’s definitely not about a little boy. I didn’t see the Golden Compass or read that book so have no idea what happened there. But, considering it flopped big time, why is this guy even being asked? Oh, right, because he’s friends with the Summit pres. of production! The good-ol-boy network rears it’s ugly head again! Nothing ever changes.
If Catherine had been a man, everybody would be clapping her on the back over the 70 mil. opening. This is what she gets for having the Biggest opening ever for a female director! She gets shown the door.

  • Brittiany

I dont want the series screwed up!!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://twilighttilldawn.blogspot.com driguerra

PLEASE DON’T TEEN UP New Moon!!!…just make a movie about the book the way it is…Twilight Saga is not just a teen story…they are missing the point.
I’m very sad…if this movies are going to be made silly and inmature I think I should just read my books and forget about the movies….is it just me? who has decided
that Twilight is just for teens…What about all of us that are way past 14yrs old…this is a love story…these books are not american pie or sexdrive …these books are ‘pride and predijice’ , ‘Romeo and Juliet’,'somewhere in time’ etc
    …I’m really lost for words…

  • acacia

I hope he passes! The Golden Compass is widely-considered to be one of the worst book to film adaptations of all time. Summit cannot afford a screw up because many of the young fans will get older and will lost interest if the second movie is subpar. As far as Im concerned, Weitz’s association with American Pie is a further minus, because Twilight was already too funny for my liking. I would gladly take Catherine over this director. She had heart, if not experience, and seemed to have a good rapport with the cast. I was not overly impressed with Twilight, but this decision (should it be true) may prove disastrous.

  • Nicole

Well I don’t know the director but I like all the movies that are listed however when me and my friends heard there was going to be a change we could not have been happier… however the director we picked to be the replacement (all 17 of us) was Gore Verbinski, the director of pirates of the Caribbean!!!!!!!!!!

  • goldie007

I can see him directing Eclipse because there requires many more special effects (werewolves) and a huge action scene. But NM…nope. Not a chance. I don’t think he’s capable of capturing the deep, wrenching emotion involved(Edward leaving=heart-wrenching sorrow; Bella running to save his live=edge of your seat anticipation…which I missed in Twilight because the entire airport scene was cut…arrgh Rosenberg should have been fired). Anyways, I’m not going to say it’s because he’s a man, because that would make me sexist. And look at Ang Lee who directed Brokeback Mountain…he was male and the movie was amazing. But I digress.
    Here’s Summit’s mailing address:

    Summit Entertainment
    1630 Stewart Street
    Suite 120
    Santa Monica, CA 90404

    And I’m sorry, I couldn’t find an email address…but it’s harder to ignore paper mail I think :) .

Also, I think we should write some kind of letter and include all of our email addresses on there as signatures about our views. Is that possible??

  • Nikki

I have 2 young daughters, I HAD to see The Golden Compass. Let me just say, I hope the books were good, because the movie was lacking in so many ways. If they want this director because of his CGI work, then they definitely have the wrong person. The CGI in The Golden Compass was terrible. Isn’t CGI supposed to be good enough that you don’t KNOW that it’s CGI? If they use him and he does that with the werewolves in New Moon, then the movie will just SUCK BIG TIME!!! I thought that whoever did the CGI in HP4 was good. At least the creatures in that looked realistic. That is the goal with the werewolves in New Moon, right? We DO want them to look real.
As far as them hiring these people because they’re friends…that’s ridiculous. Catherine was dating one of them and look how well that worked out. They need to hire a director for their talent, not because they’re friends.

  • trainerr

I would be very upset if they ‘tween’ the rest of the movies. I’m in the 30-something ‘Twilight’ crowd, and it seems like there are more of us, (compared to teens), active online about our interest in the books/movies. Sticking with a woman director would be nice, but I think that the RIGHT director is more important. Most importantly, it should be someone who takes the time to read the books, really FEELS the story, cares about the characters, and stays as true to the books as ‘Twilight’ was.

  • AliceCullen

well he is right. I didn’t see the golden compass. But wouldn’t it be hilarious if Steven Spielberg(E.T) did New Moon? Aw man that movie would kick serious a$$!

  • Erin

Personally, I liked Golden Compass, and I know the changes that they made were out of his control. The only reason they changed the ending was because the book ends on such a shocking note and they weren’t sure if they would be able to make the sequels (because of how well the film would do and the controversial material). And since there’s no way the sequels will be made I think that was a good choice. And the screenplay was my biggest concern; as long as Melissa Rosenberg stays through all four I’ll be ok. Does anyone know why Catherine Hardwicke left? I’ve heard a few different stories…

  • Melody

We need a director who sees Stephenie’s vision, understands the women’s perspective of the book, and can produce some serious special effects. I’m early 30′s and it’s not just tweens that love the series, it’s all ages. I saw men in theaters as well, and my husband did enjoy the storyline, he wanted better special effects. You could expand the audience, but regardless you need to follow the author’s eyes. That’s why Twilight made it, and take time to find the perfect director. We could all wait, just as long as they film it right! No room for disappointments.

  • rocknrollvamp

BIG MISTAKE!!! If Summit wants to tick us all over, then I say go for it! Sarcasm people! I’m a 30 something mother of two. I liked About A Boy and loved American Pie, but this isn’t the type of movie Weitz needs to be doing. I say we all need to write Summit and start giving our ideas!

  • heatherqamar

I am horrified at the prospect of this director taking on Twilight – it guarantees the product will a) have little to do with the story, b) will be skewed to appeal only to the teen and the action set and b) go for laughs, not romance. I can’t think of three more disastrous things to happen to New Moon.

The book and following books of His Dark Materials (the series for which THe GOlden Compass was the first) are fabulous books – and not children’s books. I really felt they had a more late teen/adult feel and had incredible depth and meaning. I never thought they could or should be adapted to the screen. That was confirmed by the movie. If you saw the movie and didn’t read the books, please go back and give them a chance, but they aren’t at all something a 9 or 10 year old would understand(unless they were exceedingly precocious).

The other films this man(I was very pleased at the trio of female writer, director, and book author in Twilgiht and felt a story told from a female teens point of view is best told by women – I know plenty of folks disagree abut this) has made are largely teen schlock with shock bathroom humor and sexual innuendo(and not in a tasterful way!). These books have a universal appeal (I’ll admit, mostly for women, but women of all ages) and all you have to do is look at the crowds seeing the movie to see that. If they pigeon-hole this as a teen movie – flippant, modern, CGI-heavy, and crass – they’ve lost the large, paying portion of the film audience. MAny of the film goers – who are going repeatedly, may I add, to the slightly flawed yet made with care Twilight are mothers going with their daughters, nieces, even granddaughters and they are going because they all enjoy the books. Those adults won’t be repeat viewers – and won’t pay to take their younger counterparts – if they ruin this franchise. Summit had best think VERY carefully about this, otherwise both they and we will be disappointed.

  • TW

Geez calm the hell down PEOPLE !!! I rather have a guy direct than a woman sorry I don’t know a single female director who has directed a single HUGE BLOCKBUSTER MOVIE AND ANYTHING WILL BE BETTER THAN TWILIGHT !!

  • Angelina

I think everyone should cool off for now. We don’t know what they’re deciding yet. Once we get confirmation for who is directing the film we should let our voices be heard. When the director is picked and we don’t like there skills we need to mail Summit Entertainment and LET THEM KNOW!!!! And when we do that we must tel them they need to increase the budget!!! I read somewhere that they said if they can do Twilight with a low budget and get box office success then they could do the same for new moon (something around those lines) So I say TWILIGHT FANS LETS GET TOGETHER AND MAKE SURE THEY DON’T SPOIL OUR BELOVED BOOK. IF WE ALL SPEAK OUR MIND SENDING THEM LETTERS AND LETTING THEM KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING THEN THEY CAN’T IGNORE US. CAUSE IF IT WASN’T FOR THE LOYAL FAN BASE THEY WOULD HAVE NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!

I haven’t seen The Golden Compass but I’ve heard just how bad the movie was so I never bothered watching it. I don’t want to judge this guy because of one bad movie, but since we’re talking about an adaptation than yes I’m a little worried since he didn’t do a good job with The Golden Compass. I also don’t like the fact he might also get the job soley because he has a friend working at Summit. But he has done other pretty good movies. I think Summit should try to find a director that can bring a lot of the emotional connection between the characters and someone who knows how to bring the werewolves to life.

  • Miguel

We must stop talking amongst ourselves about how unfavorable this director is. I believe we already agree on that point. Let’s coordinate with the other ‘Twilight’ fan sites and send letters to Summit Entertainment ourselves. The address was Posted by goldie007. Here it is again if you missed it:

    Summit Entertainment
    1630 Stewart Street
    Suite 120
    Santa Monica, CA 90404

Also lets coordinate in regards who we think would be the best directors with this type of film. I have three in mind myself.

    1.Ang Lee
    2.Alfonso Cuarón
    3.Gore Verbinski

Please, we need to act with absolute urgency and coordination, in order to get our point across. If you have any questions, comments or ideas PLEASE contact me at loveofilm@gmail.com.

    TWILIGHT MUST SURVIVE HOLLYWOOD!

  • http://narisamira.livejournal.com narisa

this sucks. american pie is for teens, but it’s so different from twilight!!! they should keep catherine!!! or someone who shares stephenie’s vision, not someone who does american pie! or golden compass, which was such a yawn!! damn!!

  • irunwithvampires

Coordination? Who cares about coordination, that will just slow us down. I think every one of us should take a personal responsibility to write a very long PERSUASIVE letter to Summit to tell them that they are about to make a VERY BIG MISTAKE. If we flood them with letters from individuals rather than an organized group it will give them the impression that more people are against this decision. We still have time i think, but we have to move quick and not wait until its officially confirmed that this guy is doing it cuz by then he would signed a contract, and thats irreversible!!!! SO GO NOW PEOPLE!!!! WRITE TO SUMMIT AND WARN THEM THAT THEY ARE DOING THIS ALL WRONG!!!!!!!

  • coco

I believe The Golden Compass flopped because it was labelled everywhere as an “atheist” movie before it was even released. I saw it and didn’t think it was a bad movie. I loved Twilight, but at this point, I’m beginning to get nervous about the rest of this movie series! At least we’ll always have the books!!! :)

  • Raven

Personally, I think The Golden Compass REALLY sucked. It was boring as hell. I don’t think this Weitz guy will understand Bella&Edward’s love as well as Catherine does. Damn Hollywood, always trying to milk its audience at the expense of quality!

I think Alfonso Cuaran might be okay for the job, or Mike Newell. I think he did a great job for Goblet of Fire, and I like how he got into the minds of each character. It was action-packed but the emotional element was there, too. He might be okay. But you know, I’m not very sure if a guy is the best for the job. I don’t mean to sound sexist, but the Twilight saga was written from Bella’s POV, and it resonates with lots of females everywhere. What we want is the great love between Bella&Edward portrayed. I don’t mind if it’s not action-packed. The story isn’t supposed to be a thriller anyway.

    And DON’T REPLACE TAYLOR!!!

  • immortal

Oh no! Golden Compass was nothing like the book! I really hope he doesnt get the job! Sounds like Summit is just begging for total chaos from the fans, which is what’s gonna happen if they get a director that ruins New Moon!
