This contest is sponsored by Scholastic and the book Lips Touch by Laini Taylor which was released October 1st. Read the synopsis of the book and find out more information here. Read two reviews of the book below:
Review by: Evie: Lips Touch Three Times takes the reader through three completely different stories, which all have the central theme of a young woman just starting to know who she is and exploring her world. In between the stories are the fantastic portraits of the worlds that exist around them.
In Goblin Fruit we meet Kizzy. Kizzy longs to be like the other girls, to be modern and fit in with the other girls at school, and most of all to kiss a boy. Kizzy will never be like other girls though, because, unlike them, her family remembers the past, and that other worlds surround and interact with theirs. The harder Kizzy’s family pushes her to embrace their culture, the harder Kizzy pushes away. When Kizzy meets a boy who only has eyes for her, Kizzy is trapped between her wants and the lessons and warnings from her family. Kizzy is a likeable character with insecurities and wants that resonate with anyone who has longed for that first kiss; while still portraying all of us who have tried to break away and become our own distinct person.
Next comes Spicy Little Curses Such As These. This time we have two heroines of sorts. First we have Estella, the woman who braves the fires of hell as part of her bargain in life; rescuing innocent souls while replacing them with the evil. Then we have Anamique, cursed unwillingly by Estella in order that many children would survive a natural disaster. Anamique’s curse is simple: she may never speak, or all who hear it will perish. You follow the stories of both Estella and Anamique as their lives intertwine and realize these women have made the ultimate sacrifice for love and in turn for innocent souls all over the world. Both Estella and Anamique have a strength in their characters that leaves you feeling admiration for them both.
Last of the trio is Hatchling, where we meet the fiery-haired mother and daughter team of Mab and Esme. Hatchling plunges the reader into more of an unknown world than any of the other stories. We meet the mysterious Druj people with their own icy land and their own queen. While Mab watches in horror, she sees her own past come back to life as Esme begins her own journey. Both Mab and Esme are a little harder to relate to, but there is much in Esme to admire. Esme’s sheltered little world is just an illusion, and only someone with a great personal strength could make it through an adventure like hers.
All three stories are a fun little glimpse into another place and time. As they are three distinct stories, they are perfect for those times when you want a good book, but don’t have time to sit down and read a full-length novel.
Review by: Team Switzerland (Kara): Lips Touch is a collection of three supernatural romances and tales of first kisses written by author Laini Taylor. The first story within the book is called Goblin Fruit and is set in modern day as we follow Kizzy, a 16-year-old outsider who longs to be popular and noticed by her peers – especially the boys. Kizzy’s family is less than average and constantly reminds Kizzy of their upbringing and culture, which Kizzy would prefer to ignore. When Kizzy finally meets a boy named Jack that shows unfaltering interest in her, she remembers a warning passed on from her deceased grandmother to stay away from a boy that strikingly resembled Jack. Kizzy is forced to pick between her family values and her first love, but what will she choose?
The second story in Lips Touch is one called Spicy Little Curses Such as These. This time around the story is set in British Colonial India where we meet Estella, an older woman who has spent 40 long years as the ambassador to Hell, and Anamique, a woman who was cursed, by Estella no less, and forced into silence at birth. One day Anamique, who must stay silent or risk killing anyone who hears her voice, falls in love and is tempted to speak out. Should she stay silent or should she risk the lives of hundreds to speak her true feelings?
The last – and longest - story in the group is called Hatchling, a tale that introduces us to Esme, a fourteen year old girl, and Mab, Esme’s mother. When Esme wakes up one morning, she finds that one of her eyes – normally brown – has changed into an icy blue color. Esme notices her mind now contains memories that aren’t hers and realize that her now blue eye does not belong to her either. Upon discovering that her daughter now possesses an icy blue eye, the eye of the Druj we learn, Mab panics and reveals a hidden past to Esme that now threatens their future. Can they survive the evil Druj and return to their quiet lives?
Though these three stories are vastly different, they tie together well with a common theme of first loves and first kisses. If you’re the type who hates when real life interferes with your reading life ‘just when you get to the good part’ of a book, Lips Touch is a great alternative. Each story is just long enough to catch your interest and tie up any loose ends, but short enough that you can read it in one sitting and feel satisfied. Love supernatural romance? Then Lips Touch just may be for you.

This week’s contest is sponsored by Scholastic and the new book Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater. Read more about the book, view the book trailer, a Q&A with Maggie, and more here. Read two reviews of the book below:
Review by: Evie:
Open the pages of Shiver and step into the mysterious world of Mercy Falls. Meet Grace, the girl obsessed with the wolves that lurk in the woods behind her house; Grace is haunted by one particular wolves’ eyes. Enter Sam, who is desperate to make contact with the beautiful girl. When the pair finally meets, it is obvious they aremeant to be together, after all he’s been waiting years for her.
The author, Maggie Stiefvater, describes in incredible detail the complex world of the wolves, from the woods they inhabit, to the roots of their origin. The way she describes the wolves might have you taking a closer look at the trees in the winter.
Shiver wraps the reader up in a strange, beautiful and dark mythological world. in an instant, you realize how intertwined Grace’s life is with the wolves’. Maggie Stiefvater, mixes the realistic with the fantastic so so seamlessly you’re never sure where one ends and the other begins. Shiver tells a beautiful love story that manages to show the sweet and melancholy notes of a love that needs to exist.
Fans of Twilight are sure to love this beautiful tale, with the familiar theme of longing, sacrifice, and forbidden love.
Review by: Team Switzerland (Kara) Shiver is a beautifully woven story written by Maggie Stiefvater and told through two alternating points of view. Grace, our first narrator, is a 17-year old high school student who was attacked as a child by a pack of hungry wolves and managed to narrowly escape with the help of a certain yellow-eyed wolf. Ever since that fateful day, she has grown up watching the wolves outside her house from a distance every winter and has always been drawn to that one particular yellow-eyed wolf.
Sam, our second narrator, happens to be that yellow-eyed wolf that Grace is so naturally drawn to. The twist? Sam is only a wolf in the winter. In the summer, Sam transforms into his human form. During those colder months, Sam watches Grace from afar and longs to be with her and in his preferred human state. In the warmer months, Sam watches from afar again, still longing to be with Grace, but too shy to approach. After fate pushes these two together – in human form – a whirlwind romance develops and nature threatens to tear the two apart.
Maggie Stiefvater hit the nail on the head with Shiver. The plot was very unique, put a twist on the ‘standard’ werewolf tales, and always kept you on the edge of your seat. As I mentioned, the story is told through alternating points of view, and while that has the potential to make some books confusing, Stiefvater kept the transitions smooth and seamless. Grace and Sam are very well rounded, established characters that you feel connected to from the very beginning. The romance between these two is very genuine and Steifvater’s knack for poetic writing and thoughtful descriptions only heightens their love. It’s very easy to get engrossed in this book and it’s one of those that you don’t want to put down – ever. Stiefvater has a guaranteed hit on her hands with Shiver and it will undoubtedly catch on with lovers of paranormal romance, particularly lovers of Twilight. If the Twilight saga left you ‘Team Vampire’, Shiver may have you switching over to ‘Team Wolf’.
Shiver is an amazing book and we’re very much looking forward to giving away copies to 20 of you! We love hearing the thoughts of our readers so we can’t wait to read your tweets! Good luck!
