Brian Leaf keeps the Twilight obsession educational with Defining New Moon.

In Leaf’s latest book, Defining New Moon, we’re back in the world of Twilight. but this time we’re on to New Moon. Just like Leaf’s previous book, Defining Twilight, Defining New Moon takes words from each novel and explains what they mean. The lessons are learned through definition quizzes and answers, synonym multiple choice, analogy multiple choice, and sentence completion. As in Defining Twilight, the exact page numbers the words are on in the novel are also listed. Also spread throughout the book are cumulative quizzes and reviews of chapters covered up to that point.

Defining New Moon again has many hidden pop culture references that pop up at you like Monty Python ( The Black Night –“None shall pass.�), N’Sync, House, Grey’s Anatomy and even Harry Potter. These references are entertaining and provide additional context for the words being defined.
Defining New Moon is definitely a worthy successor to Defining Twilight and Leaf continues to follow the formula that made the first book so compelling. Even though I’m well past my ACT and SAT days, I still found Defining New Moon to be an interesting read, and found much to my delight that I learned a thing or two while reading it. And how better to learn something than through my favorite series of books?

The world of spirits really does exist in the book Dark Secrets 1 and the trilogy Kissed by an Angel by Elizabeth Chandler. Both share great stories of mystery, adventure and love with a good dose of supernatural mixed in.

In Dark Secrets 1 we have two stories; Legacy of Lies and Don’t Tell. In Legacy of Lies we are introduced to Megan, who has traveled to stay in Wisteria with the grandmother who has always rejected her in the past and her standoffish cousin Matt. It’s easy for the reader to root for Megan as she learns more about this side of the family she’s never met and the old house where she’s living with them. When the nightmares begin, however, Megan finds out that things might not really be as they seem. Megan’s determination to find out what exactly happened to her grandmother’s sister puts her own existence at stake. Megan manages to find a true friend in Sophie, and together they explore the world of spirits and past lives. Legacy of Lies leads you along, making you think you’re sure you know who is behind the mysteries only to throw you into so many loops and turns that when you finally find out the truth, you’re in for a huge surprise.
Legacy of Lies also begs the question of whether true love can cross the boundaries of time and life itself.

Don’t Tell, like Legacy of Lies has a very charming and inquisitive main character in Lauren. Lauren is journeying back to the little town of Wisteria to stay with her mother’s friend, Aunt Jule, and her daughters, Holly and Nora, once more; but this time without her mother. Lauren’s mother drowned in their last trip to Wisteria and Lauren had never been back before now. As soon as Lauren gets to Aunt Jule’s house, it becomes clear that there is something very supernatural – and dangerous – still around. Nora hears voices and knots keep mysteriously tying themselves in any rope, chain or line around. The closer Lauren gets to her old neighbor Nick, the more danger seems to be finding her. Legacy of Lies is another story where you’re sure you know who is behind it all, only to be left open-mouthed at the end when events finally play out. Both Don’t Tell and Legacy of Lies keep you turning pages and guessing all the way through, while at the same time giving you leading characters who are easy to love and relate to.

Kissed by an Angel is actually a trilogy including Kissed by an Angel, The Power of Love and Soulmates. The Kissed by an Angel stories start off innocently enough with what seems to be a beautiful love story between two students, Tristan and Ivy, who seem to made for each other. Any resemblance between the two lovers and Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde is perhaps not coincidental. Ivy has always believed in angels but when she loses Tristan to a horrible tragedy, her long-held beliefs crumble. Through the stories in Kissed by an Angel we follow Ivy and her little brother Philip as they struggle to understand that Tristan is still with them and that someone is out to get them. Ivy is a lovable character in her devotion to Tristan, and her friends and family. She is also brave and determined to always do the right thing. The character I most fell in love with in Kissed by an Angel though would have to be Philip, Ivy’s little brother. Philip believes in angels and never once does that belief falter… ultimately saving his sister’s life.

Review by: Team Switzerland (Kara):
In the first installment of the Dark Secrets series by Elizabeth Chandler, we’re given two stories within the one book. The first, Legacy of Lies, follows along with Megan, a teenager who is sent to live at her grandmother’s house along with her cousin. As the story progresses and Megan settles in, she begins to notice that things are not exactly as they seem. She begins to suspect that the house is haunted and through her journey she finds out that her family has more ‘dark secrets’ than she was previously aware of. Through a series of twists and turns, Megan tries to piece together the past and find out just what happened at the house she now resides in. This book takes you on a pretty wild ride and the ending is one that you definitely won’t see coming.

The second story within Dark Secrets 1 is called Don’t Tell. This time around, we meet a teen named Lauren who returns to the little town of Wisteria - where 7 years prior her mother drowned - to spend some time at her godmother’s house. Though Lauren was always suspicious of her mother’s death, that suspicion only grows when she arrives in Wisteria. She begins to notice a series of similar events happening to her that happened to her mother prior to her death and is determined to figure out what – or who – killed her mother so she doesn’t suffer a similar fate. This was my favorite of the two stories and definitely has you on the edge of your seat wondering just what happened to Lauren’s mother and why it’s happening to her now.

While Dark Secrets brought us two different stories, Kissed By An Angel is a trilogy. The book introduces us to Ivy, a teen who has believed in angels ever since a near-death experience when she was younger. One day, Ivy finds herself very out of place after moving to a new town when her mother becomes engaged. Soon after moving to town, Ivy meets Tristan and they quickly fall into a very deep love. On a very fateful day, Ivy finds her belief in angels vanish when Tristan is killed in a terrible accident.

Ivy is devastated and throughout the next story in the book, The Power of Love, we learn that Tristan is actually still connected to Ivy and has returned as an angel. Unfortunately, Ivy’s loss of faith in angels has her failing to realize that her true love is closer than she thinks.

Throughout the rest of The Power of Love and Soulmates, we follow along with Ivy and her brother, Philip, through a series of wild twists and turns. Tristan is confronted with the realization that the terrible accident he was killed in wasn’t even an accident at all, and he tries to piece together the mystery while simultaneously keeping Ivy safe and unharmed.

Both Dark Secrets and Kissed By an Angel are great reads. Dark Secrets lies more on the mystery side, while Kissed By an Angel is a love story that will satisfy anyone. I highly recommend both reads, and especially to the lovers of the supernatural.
