DEADBOLT: CAN 'NEW MOON' AND THE 'TWILIGHT SAGA' ENDURE THE HYPE?

DEADBOLT: CAN ‘NEW MOON’ AND THE ‘TWILIGHT SAGA’ ENDURE THE HYPE?

The Deadbolt has a great article written about the dangers of overexposure, and the long wait until we get to see ‘New Moon’ in eight months:

With Twilight almost out on DVD and with over eight months remaining before Twilight fans head to theaters on November 20 to take a bite out of the sequel New Moon, the internet is abuzz with all things New Moon and Twilight related. But with so much hype leading up to New Moon, the second big screen adaptation in the Stephenie Meyer based Twilight saga, is it possible that New Moon will suffer from over-exposure? With so many outlets clamoring to get their own piece of the New Moon pie, is it fair to speculate that there’s too much early hype for the twilight sequel?

Although it’s safe to assume that all of the frenzied anticipation won’t hurt box-office sales of New Moon, come November the hype will quickly turn to the third Twilight adaptation, Eclipse. With the buzz for New Moon at such a fever pitch, is it realistic to think that the intensity can continue, or get even stronger, for another year and four months when Eclipse hits theaters in June of 2010? Can fans maintain that momentum, or will they eventually burn out? Will it have an affect on New Moon?

There’s no debate whatsoever over how passionate Twilight fans are for the franchise. However, the intensity of the online Twilight buzz leading up to New Moon raises a few interesting questions, namely … What if New Moon falls short of expectations? Given the online intensity and frequency of New Moon news hitting the web at breakneck speed (and there’s still eight months to go), will New Moon be able to meet such high levels of expectation?

This article raises some valid points. Everywhere you look right now people are crazy for ‘Twilight’ and ‘New Moon’. There’s even huge coverage for the director of ‘Eclipse’ when ‘New Moon’ is just getting started. However overall, I think perhaps they underestimate the true staying power of the ‘Twilight’ fan base. Many of us started before there were movies, and will be fans long after the movies have all been released. I’m not too worried, some of the craziness may go down a little bit, but even that is doubtful. I think we’ll stick around no matter how ‘New Moon’ turns out.

What do you think? Is ‘New Moon’ overexposed already? Do you think the ‘Twilight Saga’ will live up to the hype?

Nah I don’t think NM is overexposed. We already know the story and we are just excited to see NM come to life. Yes I believe Twilight will live up to the hype and beyond. That shows you that I have complete faith in real Twilight fans. Never underestimate the devotion a true Twilighter.
By the way, TA, I’m sure glad to see your website up and running again! I kept checking your website all day long if whether if it is up or not! Whew!

I have to agree; I don’t think NM is over-exposed. If anything, it seems that we can’t get enough! Judging by the age ranges and excitement level at my local Borders for the midnight release party, we’ll all be standing in lines for the midnight showing of NM. One thing I was struck by tonight; there was a mom there with two of her three young daughters (Friday night is usually her night to leave the girls at home w/dad while she catches dinner/movie with friends)was the devotion of even Twilight’s youngest fans. The 6-year old got her report card today and got all “A”s; she worked really hard for a perfect report card because her reward was to be able to attend the DVD release party! Seems mom and her girls are ALL Edward fans; I hope that SM has another book in her! I think that the Twilight Saga Franchise will continue to do well and to grow; there is a 17-year old Bella who lives in the heart and soul of most of us.
    Is it November yet????? :-)

I think it will have staying power. Fans of Lord of the Rings, and Harry Potter stuck with those movie franchises. I know HP fans are anxiously awaiting the next instalment, and look how many years that has been going on! As long as the movies are as good as the first one, they’ll be fine. If they do a lousy job, however, that could sink it. But I have a good feeling about New Moon, so I’m not worried.

I also agree that New Moon is not over-exposed or will not live up to the hype that the fans are making a big deal about. I have seen new photos and videos online about New Moon Shoots and I can say that they really are doing a major effort to make it better than Twilight. I can tell that I love the bolder and lovelier cast. Fans are so much anticipating for the movie… they just can’t get enough of it. I think the next sequels of Twilight will more successful because twilight fans are increasing in number and are so much obsessed. I’ve not given much thought about over-exposure because I know that we can maintain the excitement and faith for a long time even for two years or so. And if New Moon doesn’t seem to please more fans or just become a waste of money and time (which I don’t want to happen), (I can infer that it is because of all the Team Edward fans not satisfied) it is a challenge and lesson for them to make Eclipse so much better, bolder and greater. I can feel that they knew how to satisfy fans, to fill our addiction and to maintain the disciplined hype. No worries… I’m so excited about it!

No, I don’t think its overexposed, as was stated before, Lord Of The Rings and Harry Potter fans proved that fans stick to a good thing and they grow with it always taking in new aspects of each film and/or book. Its always the story that keeps the interest, so is the cast, but we will be seeing the cast do other projects in between Twilight saga films, fans can’t get enough. Although truth be told personally I would not want to know any surprizes or changes in the film before release because I’d like to be able to take it in while viewing the film as a whole.

I agree with all of you nm is not over exposed at all!! every1 knows wat happens in nm anyway! if people become dissapoinnted its bc they havent read the books! at first i dint like twilight at all bc they left out soo many great parts from the book but the movie is just suspose to give you a general idea not tell every single detail if you want to know evey single detail then read the books!! i think that if people dont get burn out with harry potter (im not haten harry potter im just making a point) and they have like 6 or 7 movies then they wont get burn out on the twilight saga!!!

  7. twilight_overexposed responded:

it is overexposed for females who haven’t read the books and for males. but the core fans may be able to sustain the franchise. although at some point some may decide to hold out for the DVD releases
