DEADLINE HOLLYWOOD DAILY: CATHERINE HARDWICKE FIRED FROM TWILIGHT FRANCHISE

Posted December 7th, 2008 By: Team Switzerland 101 Comments »

Nikki Finke from Deadline Hollywood Daily is reporting that she has gotten confirmation that Catherine Hardwicke has been fired from the Twilight franchise.

Here’s what she is reporting:

So the rumors are true. I’ve confirmed that Summit Entertainment is taking Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke off the sequel in this big new franchise. No doubt my posting this will speed up the studio’s announcement, and Summit will surely try to spin this as all going down amicably. But that’s only true between Summit and Hardwicke’s CAA agent, not with the director herself. Worse, this terrible news for Hardwicke comes just as she and the Twilight cast are on their European press tour. No doubt, tomorrow’s interviews in France will now focus entirely on what, if anything, Catherine did to deserve this treatment. This also could blow up into a scandal for Summit if it chooses a male director over Hardwicke, whose Twilight easily beat Mimi Leder’s 1998 Deep Impact box office gross as the biggest opener for a female director. That was a record embraced by Hollywood feminists as a sign of growing gal power. Now Hardwicke’s career will surely be damaged by this very public firing. Summit already has started preparing the Twilight sequel New Moon, based on Meyer’s second book in the series, and, to contain costs, the studio is considering making Meyer’s third book Eclipse back to back).

The word from inside Summit is that Hardwicke, the acclaimed Thirteen director, “was ‘difficult’ and ‘irrational’ during the making of Twilight,” one insider explains to me. “That doesn’t mean anything when you’re talking about a filmmaker because they all are, but still…” (Indeed, Joe Roth and Sony kept saying those things about Julie Taymor on Across The Universe. Yet she made a cult classic and is now directing Marvel/Sony’s Spider-Man for Broadway.) Says another of my sources, “Summit didn’t like her. They’re saying the [director of photography] Elliot Davis is the one responsible for the film’s sumptuous visual look, that the editor Nancy Richardson had to save the film in post-production, and Summit thought Hardwicke’s [CAA] agent Beth Swofford was alternately ineffectual and hysterical.” In fact, I’m told that the studio has even had quiet talks with other CAA directors for the last week. “And Swofford never told Hardwicke about that and that she was about to get kicked to the gutter,” an insider tells me. “To add insult to injury, Hardwicke can now look forward to being grilled by the press for days on end, in front of the cast, about why she’s getting canned.”

UPDATE: Nikki has updated her post and added that Summit has just phoned in to her and confirmed the news. In addition to this, EW.com has confirmed Summit’s press release that they are not moving forward with Catherine. Here’s what they had to say:

Twilight fans, start your protest campaign now. Summit Entertainment has announced that it will not move forward with director Catherine Hardwicke for the Twilight sequel New Moon. According to Summit’s press release, the studio and Hardwicke could not come to terms on a schedule; Summit’s plan to release the film at the end of 2009 or beginning of 2010 did not work with the amount of prep time Hardwicke wanted to dedicate to New Moon. Similar to the Harry Potter franchise before it, Summit will now look to hire a new director to helm New Moon. According to a statement released by Hardwicke, “I am sorry that due to timing I will not have the opportunity to direct New Moon. Directing Twilight has been one the great experiences of my life, and I am grateful to the fans for their passionate support of the film. I wish everyone at Summit the best with the sequel—it is a great story.”

Wow. I don’t even know what to say. This really makes me sad to hear and I am very anxious to hear who will be replacing her.

What do you think of these reports? Are you happy or sad that Catherine is supposedly axed from future movies?

  • Carla

only one can hope it’s true. i could’ve done a better job directing. i love the twilight series…but i feel as if she butchered it.

  • Jackie

    this makes me sad.
I hope its just a rumor.

  • Elizabeth

Oh WOW. I can’t believed they fired her! I loved the movie and now I’m scared a man is going to direct it! OH NO.

  • Patty

I really hope this is not true!! :(

  • Carole

I agree with Carla, Catherine and the scriptwriter butchered it.

  • renae

I feel bad for her, but I honestly hope it’s true. I understand they were working with a low budget, but the directing was just awful. I really looked forward to this movie since I love the books, and while I understand that the movies are NEVER better, this movie was just awful. I’m looking forward to a new director to do a MUCH better job if this is true.

  • Ana

Omg, I hope that this isn’t true. Because the way this is being announced is really insulting, at least for Catherine. She needs more respect then that. That’s not right. If the rumors are true, all I can hope for is that they have a female director, I don’t think a male director will give these films the emotions they need.

On the other hand, why I’m hoping this is a rumor, don’t they start filming in March? Are they really going to snatch up a new director on such short notice? I don’t think so. I think that they’re just hashing out the details but that Catherine will be directing. At least, that’s my theory. Oh please Summit, release a statement that these statements are false!

  • K@t!3

OME! Ok I LOVED her vision on the movie! Dude seriously hope it is NOT true cause if it is that SUCKS!! And I agree with Elizabeth NO GUY DIRECTORS!
This has proved to be a very female empowered phenomenon! It was written orginally by a female, the screenplay was by a female, it was directed by a female, ect! Putting a male into that chain would be like a slap in a face! SO if Catherine really isn’t doing New Moon then they better get a female director and odds are they prolly won’t!!

  • Lee

I am hoping it is true. I didn’t think she did a great job capturing Bella and Edwards relationship. I think we need to see New Moon through someone elses perspective. I was hoping that they would have fired Melissa. I just don’t think they both did a good job. I don’t think people should get to worried, since Stephanie will be there to put in her two cents. It’s not like a male director can’t make this work.

  • Midori

I hope it’s not true because I think Catherine did a wonderful job in directing Twilight. The movie is only good as the script. The cast work well with Catherine especially Rob & Kristen. Changing directors will bring a different essence to the sequels. I wonder what Stehpenie’s reaction will be to all this?

  • esme

I have two thoughts on this. Firstly: Stephenie Meyer was on set everyday of filming, correct? If she felt that it wasn’t ok she would have spoken up. So I don’t think that Catherine Hardwicke “butchered” the movie. It just was a screen adaptation of a book.

Secondly: The fact that Twilight has helped Catherine Hardwicke B
break Mimi Leder’s record had very little to do with her directorial ability and EVERYTHING to do with a loyal fan base that would have gone to see the movie even if it was directed by a troupe of trained baboons!

I think it is sad that she won’t be able to show us what she has learned. This is Monday morning quarter-backing at it’s finest.
Would have could have should have…..

  • AllisCullen

I don’t know HOW to feel about this….I’m torn.

In some ways I feel that she REALLY got it, but on the same token, I feel like it made it hard for the non-Twilighters to understand, too…

    I really don’t know.

  • Jon

How can somebody get “fired” from a job they never actually had in the first place?

Hardwicke had a contract to direct Twilight. That’s it. She never had a contract for New Moon. Many people just assumed she would direct New Moon, but if the contract negotiations fell through, is that really a firing? (She certainly wouldn’t qualify for unemployment insurance.)

  • claire

If this is true, Summit is being run by morons. They put out an Indie film that beats James Bond in one weekend – and they fire the director.

    Foolish.

I hope it’s not true as I think she is awesome.

  • Twilightfreak

NO WAY! SHE HAS TO DIRECT NEW MOON! I UNDERSTAND SHOUTING WON’T HELP, BUT I AM SO MAD!!!!!!!!!!!
    NO WAY!!!!!!!!!!
SHE IS AMAZING!!!!!!!! STEPHENIE LOVES HER!!!!!!!!!!! THIS IS PURE BS. IF THIS ISN’T FALSE, A PETITION IS COMING UP! TRUST ME, IT IS!!!!!!
SHE WILL DIRECT IT! THIS IS NOT OFFICIAL YET. IT IS PLAIN BS FOR ME, UNTIL IT’S OFFICIALLY STATED BY SUMMIT!!!!!!!!!!

  • janay

i kinda hope she is fired.

  • amdadu

I’m torn over this. On the one hand, it would be really sad if Catherine got fired. I know that the budget for Twilight was a big issue between Catherine and Summit. If they fire her, then it could be that they’re wanting to do New Moon with the same budget as Twilight, and thats just not possible with all the special effects needed for the second book/movie. So that could put a damper on the second movie….
But it could be interesting to see what another director does with New Moon….

  • megan

omg..what the heck..i hope its not true

  • Trish

I am more than a little concerned about what Summit will do with the Twilight saga — in one quote, the guy from Summit said he didn’t think New Moon needed a bigger budget. Is that just greed? It has taken in close to $150MM worldwide, after spending $35MM. I think there are several places where special effects could have used more money.

If they do go to a different director, it has GOT to be someone who respects the books as much as Hardwicke did — I was really surprised to hear how much Hardwicke listened to Meyer; if you read any of Rossio/Elliott’s blogs/articles, you’ll know how rare that is. I wonder how Audrey Wells would do? She has done some good stuff. But there are a lot of people who would try to put their own spin on Stephenie Meyers work and who think it’s not girl-powered enough. Spare us!

I’ll just wait to hear the news.

  • Kelsey

Son of a b****. Are you f’in serious? Sorry for the language, but now I am VERY worried. Twilight was a hit; whoever said they butchered it should get a different obsessions cause OBVIOUSLY they don’t appriciate the movie like MOST people do.

Cathrine KNEW the book. She and Stephenie made it amazing. She LISTENED. Look what almost happened with Paramount! God damnit, now I’m pissed! How are they going to fire her! She had a passion for the film and UNDERSTOOD the damn book. Omg, I’m so pissed off right now it’s not funny. UHHHHHHG. WHY? The first movie was so incredible. More than i imagined. Now the next stupid director will just do it for the damn money, going in KNOWING, the NUMBER ONE thing in her/his head, will be, “This money made so much money on it’s opening, I’m gonna be rich!” she/he’s gonna boss around Rob and Kristen, which will PISS ME OFF EVEN MORE! I am NOT going to let some stupid director ruin Rob and Kristen and what they did for this movie. UUUUUUUUUUUUGH. I am sooooooooooo flippin pissed right now.

If it happens, that person BETTER be if not MORE passionate for this series. I know nothing I can do but I have to get my voice flippin heard.

    Sorry for waisting ur time.

  • SD

i’m torn. on one hand i love that catherine believed in the book and the story…but i also didn’t love the way it developed into a movie. i would like to see a new screenwriter for new moon though. but i have to admit i’m nervous about what a new director would do with the saga. someone could step in and be totally off base.

as far as budget goes, new moon will really need a bigger budget with the wolves in the story line this time around.

whomever ends up directing it i hope they stay true to the story…because that’s why we all love the movie to start with! and i hope whomever ends up being the screenwriter listens to all the suggestions being made by the fans…

  • Falcon

I hope this isn’t true. If it is I think it has more to do with Hardwicke’s insistance on a bigger budget. Despite Summit wanting to keep a rather modest budget.

It is really short notice to get a new Director on board. Unless, they’ve already been talking with someone behind the scene. This might just be a negotiation tactic.

If this is true Summit should be ashamed that this wasn’t handled in a professional manner and take more responsibility for internal information.

  • Twilightfreak

Kelsey, I COMPLETELY agree with you. I agree with what you wrote 100%! Are you the same girl from bellaandedward.com?

  • Jane

THANK GOD! I hope they do get a dude, personally. The special effects require someone with that background.

  • DazzledbyTwilight

Well……WOW is all I can say really. I for one did not think that Catherine did such a great job with Twilight and was really horrified about her grand ideas for New Moon. I hope that they follow suit with rosenburg too and give us a director and a screenwriter that can bring our beloved characters to life and do New Moon justice!

One thing I do not agree with if this is true is the way they did it…that is wrong. Very poor tactics on the part of Summit. I mean she is in Europe promoting Twilight.

My excitement for New Moon is rising a bit more. Am very curious to see who they will put in place of Catherine and hopefully rosenburg too.

  • Sam

I think they need a new director!!!!!!!!! I liked the movie but it could have been a lot better

  • jen

I don’t know what to think of this. Having a woman or man as the director doesn’t really matter, look at The Notebook?!
the movie had its flaws but I still loved it!!!!! the tone and feel of it made feel like you were right there, and I don’t think it would have been the same without Catherine.
If the choose another director he or she has to be BETTER then, if they keep Catherine then she needs to make sure to fix the flaws from the first one.
I’m happy as long as the New Moon is great and the process of filming it is good for the cast and crew. :)

  • Tessa

    11. esme – i don’t think stephenie was on set every single day. if i remember correctly, she was only on set for two different scenes. possibly three. she was trying to stay out of their hair as much as possible.

i’m pretty ok with them getting a new director. while it is sort of a slap in the face, what with her breaking all these female director records, i still don’t feel like it was ALL BECAUSE OF HER. i mean, she was directing TWILIGHT for crying out loud. this film had a built in audience. the casting agent caused as much excitement as the director did. i think with that main cast, the film would have sold itself with or without catherine. i also really didn’t like her handheld shots. i would have loved less modern, more classic approach to filming. i don’t think the books asked for that. and the editing was super choppy, but i don’t know how much that is her fault vs the editors. although she did say she was in the editing room all the time, so…

  • Tracy

No matter what your opinion on whether Catherine Hardwicke is the best director to proceed with New Moon, this “announcement” is just tacky in its timing and tone. What a great way to thank a person who is currently promoting a project that is lining your coffers.

Summit has made some comments lately that have me alternating between being excited and dreading the next movies. They have mentioned back to back filming which I think is absolutely essential. But they have also mentioned that there is no need for a bigger budget. Just who do they expect to be able to showcase shapeshifters without money for special effects?

Erik Feig is Summit’s President of Worldwide Production and Acquisitions. Kudos to him for picking up the rights to a great project with so much potential. Send some mail his way and let your voice be heard.

  • Jen

I have never posted on sites like this before but i think there are two big problems with the decision if it is true. One, as people already mentioned, is the problem of finding a new director in time during pre-production. With the first movie it took a lot of time to get the cast and crew together, and while it is still technically the same cast the crew could be completely changed based upon the new director. And secondly a big part of why Kristen wanted to sign on to the movie is because of Catherine. While she is still technically signed onto New Moon it would really mess with the flow of the movies not to mention the relations on the set because everyone seemed to be so close. But I don’t know maybe i am reading too much into it. Oh and to the person above, the assumption that a woman can’t do as good of a job on special effects as a man is ludicrous.

  • Spunk Ransom’d

I think now that Twilight was sooo huge…Summit realizes they really have to put out something great with New Moon…especially if they want to be able to cash in on Eclipse & Breaking Dawn. Catherine seems to be great at the low budget indie/cult films…but when it comes to a huge blockbuster (Harry Potter-esque) I’m not sure she can deliver the goods.

I look forward to a bigger budget and better special effects with New Moon. I really think the cinematography & editing was a life saver for Twilight. There was quite a lot of music montages and sweeping shots of the scenery as fillers – there wasn’t as much “substance” (like building the relationship between Bella & Edward) as there needed to be…like we had in the book.

  • loza

Whatever they decide to do with new moon, it will still be a hit i mean come on the twilight fanbase is freaking enormous!
there are so many loyal fans out there that will love the movie even if it was directed by a little kid!
Maybe summit should just employ a 2nd director, a male would be good coz there would be input from both a female & a male perspective.

Also, if this story is true then the people that run summit are a bunch of insensitive a**holes. Seriously, they should consider Catherine’s feelings before doing something that would cause all this drama especially while shes out touring and promoting the film!

  • acacia

I was not impressed with her directing. BUT, I am a huge feminist, and I have this to say to Summitt: THIS IS A WOMEN-DRIVEN PROJECT, AND IT ALWAYS HAS BEEN. YOU MUST PICK ANOTHER WOMAN DIRECTOR!!!!! I am also verrrrry curious as to how this will affect the cast, because they all seemed to LOVE Catherine (it oculd have been an act, though). I hope they will not be bitter because of this. This is very interesting news, indeed!!!

  • sjg

Let’s all write to Summit to protest her being removed from the franchise. We need a woman to direction the rest of the pictures.

  • http://twilightersanonymous Gwen

I am going to wait until I see the final product before I mourn or cheer. The Harry Potter series was only improved by new directors. A fresh viewpoint may be a good thing.

  • Wendy

    $#I# happens

  • Spunk Ransom’d

Wendy – ROTF-LMAO!!! 36 responses to describe our sentiments and you sum it up better than all of us!!! :o )

  • Alex

DAMN IT IF SHE IS FIRED!!! THEN THAT MEANS WE HAVE TO WAIT LONGER FOR NEW MOON TO COME OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Naikyy

    Hi!!
I’m French, therefore sorry if I make faults…
The interview of Catherine is today and I would have can be answers.
If you don’t understand the French, and that there are interesting things, I would translate them and would send them to you!
    (Lastly, if you want it…)
    Good evening!!

  • Emmy

I’m really upset to hear that. I loved Twilight, and quite enjoyed Thirteen as well. Those are the only two movies I’ve seen of Catherine’s, and I liked her directing in both.

May I say it’s also horrible that they did that when she is on the European tour. Now she will be subjected to dozens of demeaning questions about why she was fired.

  • Darlene

Why does hollywood make the same mistakes over and over?! When they have a good movie with a director that hasn’t made a big name for themselves among the public (i.e. Sam Raimi, Steven Spielberg), they usually change the director when the movie is a success in order to get a “brand name” director. HELLO! The movie is a success because of the director! So some of the special effects were lousy, but that was due to budget NOT directing. Now that the movie has become successful, the budget for the next film will go up and the director can pay more for effects which will make for an even better movie. This director has set a tone for the Twilight series that no one can duplicate. Let the woman have the movie back for next sequel. If she doesn’t pull it off then ax her and get someone else, but I think she’s proven herself to the audience and the actors. What more do you want?

  • Jessica

Honestly, the more I think about it the more OK with it I am. As someone else mentioned, the Harry Potter’s only got better with the different director’s so I think that as long as they pick the right person for the job, New Moon can only be better than Twilight. A lot of people had problems with the pacing of Twilight and the only person to blame for that is Catherine as the director. Yes, the editor has a hand in that but the director works closely with the editor so again, it’s all on her.

I just hope the next person has the same passion for the project as Catherine did and can make the cast gel as well under his or her direction.

What isn’t cool is the way they announced it. How lame when she’s over in Europe promoting the stinking movie?! Seriously. Lame, Summit. Lame.

  • kris

I’m so happy they are replacing her as director. I just might watch New Moon now if the script is done much better than how Twilight was done.

  • Carol

I am not too happy with this decision. I mean I think they want this to be rushed. I think 2010 is a ok time. They are also saying they want to be like Harry Potter. Well Harry Potter is not too rushed and look at WB pushing back the film in the first place. I do not think they are rushing. I want a good film this time and I believe the with the right budget and director who cares is the best. I believe that Catherine really cares about the fans and the transition from book to movies. I think we should do something about it. I say we contact Larry at MTV and get our voices heard what do you think?

  • Sherry

I am so relieved. I love Twilight, and honestly? The film is just not that good.

It has nothing to do with the budget. It has nothing to do with whether or not Catherine is a female director. The film failed because Bella and Edward’s love story just isn’t there the way it is in the books. And that was Catherine’s job – to tell the story in the best possible way – to make Twilight feel real, not laughable.

And if you think about it, this news could end up being a happy ending for everyone. Catherine is sure to get tons of new work after her Twilight experience. Whoever Summit hires to be the new director will have a chance to redeem Twilight and make New Moon magical. And maybe, just maybe, we’ll get to see Kristen and Rob deliver performances ten times better than before!

  • Lhend Rusc

Not really sure how to feel about this, sad is the first thing that comes to mind, but if she is truly ok with it, I’m happy for her. I still would have liked to see her in there, I think her budget was a set back for her last time and this would have been much more fun the second time around. Oh well….

  • Nina

im sad. i thought catherine did a great job.
    i loved the movie..
yes there were some parts where i didnt LOVE it..
but i think she did an excellent job.

I just hope Summit knows what they are doing
and i hope they can find another female director.
i think a male director might want to put more action into new moon than the emotions it shows in the book.
hopefully, if they hire a male director, he will stick to the book.

  • AY

YAY!!! I really hope this is true! I really hope they can bring someone else in that can bring New Moon to life. Did you guys not hear what she wanted to do with New Moon. Her vision is not atune with the story and it’s best if they brought in someone else.

  • Amber

wow…i really hope that if they have a male director he doesn’t make it into something stupid and moronic..it’s suppose to be about love..specially this next book when she’s in a depression and stuff..hopefully the next director will do a good job understanding this

  • Adrienne

I know that I might get some angry replies back to this, but I think this might, potentially, be one of the best things to happen to New Moon. I don’t know if Twilight had some of the angst that it was supposed to and it’s quite possible that a new director will be just the ticket.
I also think that will eliminate some of the spinning and “Blair Witch Project”-esque filming that went on. I think she did an average job, but perhaps a new (and hopefully female and Twi-core director) will do an even greater job.
    Just be open minded?

  • angel

they can’t do that! no man could understand the twilight series the way catherine hardwicke did.

  • Madison Meyer

Frankly, I’m relieved that she won’t be directing New Moon and Eclipse.
Don’t get me wrong– Twilight did do well for what they had to work with, but it just seemed lost and rushed, and the pace was all wacky. I think her bubbly, scattered personality got too in touch with the film and well, ruined it.
And I mean, I’m all for women power (I’m going to be a Film Major), but honestly, I couldn’t care less if it was a male of female director.
As long as the films are done well!

  • AY

What difference does it make what gender is directing this movie? I’m a woman and I could care less whose directing this film just as long as they capture the love and essence between the characters. The Notebook was directed by a man and I absolutely loved that movie. Lord of the Rings had it’s share of small love scenes and it was also directed by a man. CH didn’t capture that connection when directing thie film, I did not see the chemistry in this film at all. Again I’m happy she hasn’t been signed on to direct New Moon and I’m excited to see what the new director has in store for the next film. CH didn’t bring in the huge numbers because she did a great job, the numbers were already there because of the huge fan base. Plus it was all the buzz talk for month before the preimere. Many of the reviews were also negative from critics and fans.

  • ana

Okay, but what I love is the EXCUSE that Summit is giving. Seriously? You’re going to say it was timing issue???? Be honest for crying out loud!! The REAL reason why they chose not to hire her from New Moon was because they couldn’t see why Twilight needed a bigger budget-let alone New moon. All I have to say to Mr. Friedman is, “Did you read the books?” The sequals SCREAM minimum $70 million budget. I just have four words : Boys MORPHING into WEREWOLVES!! In that sense Catherine had EVERY reason to hash it out for a bigger budget. I just hope that they change their mind about that.
    My two main concerns/requests are:
    1. A FEMALE director be hired, a passionate one at that about the series.
    2. That $150 million gets put into use by New Moon by AT LEAST half.

  • nickie

im actually very sad….i loved the first movie and i know how dedicated she was to making the film very close to the book!! i can only hope that if the rumors are true, that the new director will follow the book closely and make a movie that we will all love….otherwise there will be very many disappointments. i just hope it all works out!

  • megan

I dont even know what to say..i saw the movie twice and loved it..yes there were some parts that needed a little more and some things could have been changed but i loved it..they shoudlnt be treating her like that..and its ridiculous that summit is making up stuff..why cant they just tell as whats really going on..if they are going to replace catherine i hope they get someone good that understands it and wont screw it up.I think we could have waited a little while to see new moon if a little more time was going to make it better.im ready to sign the petition whenever one is made :)

  • TW

THATS SAD BUT CATHERINE THANK YOU !

GUYS VOTE FOR THE TWILIGHT GUYS …

    http://popsugar.com/2572902

  • Twilights My Crack

    :’(
    i am sooo sad…so depressed.
    omg.
    she did….i am sad…
    i just cant explain it.
she chose the best music ever.
    i mean, i dunno…
    so sad.

  • Bekah

I am actually quite happy to hear this news. I think that Catherine did an OK job, but there was definitely room for improvement. I didn’t like a lot of the changes they made in the movie, i.e Bella and Charlie eating at the diner all the time and Bella in her underwear during the kissing scene (unnecessary), to name a few. However, overally I did like the movie, it just wasn’t of blockbuster quality.

I feel that now Summit knows what is possible during this movie and hopefully this means they understand they have to step it up a notch for the remaining movies. Many films are directed by men and can still capture the romance of the story. Like several other people mentioned, Catherine Hardwicke wasn’t the reason this movie was such a success, the fanbase of the books are what made this a success.

I have every confidence that Summit knows what they are doing and the next movie will be fantastic.

  • Heather

WOW! shocker i thought for sure they were going to keep her…
O well im kinda glad…cause it coodve been waaaaayyyy better
But as long as they dont change the awesome and perfect cast its allll good
Idk but the only thing that was truely amazing from the movie was the cast!! i have never seen a more perfect casting!! Every single one of them was just made for their role!!!
But hopefully they find a director fast and a really good one too!!
And hopefully this director can do more for the movie than Catherine did for TWILIGHT…
    Im really anxious tho :)
I hope its amazing!! but they do need to make it more interesting in the moments where bella and Edward are apart….or else the movie will loose its meaning….we can only wait and see….

  • Judi

She was horrible as well Melissa Rosenberg, the scripwriter …. both of them should be fired! I’m glad she’s off the movie. I’m hoping Julie Taymore of Across the Universe will be hired as the new director. She’ll be fantastic! Catherine Hardwicke had nothing to do by the box office phenomenon of this movie. This was all the Twilight Fans doing. Not her work. Most Twilight fans are unhappy about the finished product and the fault had to be put on Hardwicke. YAY FOR TWILIGHTERS! Now on to getting the right director to helm this film.

I am curious to hear what the cast has to say about this decision – particularly Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart – seeing that Catherine Hardwicke was one of the main reasons they were attracted and signed on to the film.
Whoever the next director is, she must be FEMALE & have the same passion for the story as Hardwicke did.
The main problem with TWILIGHT was the miniscule budget, not the director.
I hope Summit knows what they are doing & don’t screw up the next movie(s)

  • Yes Sir

Im glad that they are getting rid of her. I keep reading about how it was the best that could be done with the budget but come on. The budget wasnt that low. Underworld had a budget of 22 million and it didnt feel like you were watching a student film at times. The last half of twilight felt lower budget than thirteen which I really liked. I dont really care that she was a female director. If its all about how she is a female director and this the best we can get out of one then I say bring on the male directors because clearly women arent cut out for it. People need to leave her sex out of it because it comes down to the job she did not internal organs breasts. I think the biggest plus will be that we wont have to see anymore more ridiculous Rosalie/Nikki Reed scenes that werent in the book. Am I the only person who couldnt help but believe that was because they had a working relationship prior to this? Without those scenes maybe they could have been fair to Alice. I have to cover my eyes everytime Rosalie throws that monkey man line out there. I would put that on a list of all time most embarrassing, and not in a funny way, moments in film.

  • Music17

I am sorry but I am so happy they got rid of Catherine! I wish they would get rid of Melissa to, but we shall see! I love Catherine as a person she is so fun but the camera angles and such were bad. I can’t wait to see who they get to direct it now!

  • Chelsea

    All I can say is…
    Thank God.

I think the series will do a million times better without her.

  • vamplvr

Well people…you can pretty much kiss the Twilight saga goodbye at this point. Unless they get someone amazing, like Sophia Coppola to direct…But, I’m betting that the suits at Summit (who have NO IDEA WHAT WOMEN WANT TO SEE) are thinking more along the lines of Michael Bay…they’re wanting to bring in more men, and what better way to do that, than to f*ck it up with more action, maybe add some buildings and cars exploding, right???? Have everyone carry machine guns…I AM SO PISSED OFF RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!

  • neetabug

Well, I’m a little ambivalent to be honest. The first time I saw Twilight my immediate thought was ‘God, I hope they don’t let Hardwicke near the sequels’. Now, after having seen it a ‘few’ more times, I actually quite like the fast action pace. I hasten to add, it’s fine for the movie, but I still prefer the pace and content of the book.

I was also very concerned with what she would do to New Moon, because from things being said in the media, it looked like it was going to be almost completely Jacob-centric, something that would/will ensure I won’t bother going to see it. I appreciate there are a lot of Team Jacob members out there, but the Twilight series is Bella and Edwards love story with Jacob as Bella’s best friend/stalker, not a love triangle. so anyway, blah blah, I got off track.

If James Cameron is a possibility, then I think he would do the story great justice, but I’m not sure if Summit can afford him.

As for the female/male director argument – I couldn’t care less. Look at all the beautiful romantic movies out there, all made by men, long before feminism was ever given a name.

Just one thing further……please please don’t let any spanish directors near the story, I don’t want it turned into a dark depressing thing, and they seem to have a habit of doing that.

  • Dorothy

FIRE THE WRITER!!! FIRE THE WRITER!!!

And for god’s sake don’t let this be the third HP movie, that was awful.

  • Bri

OH WOW, they really Fired her!??
from what i just read seems like they were a lil harsh about it..

    But.

i was actually hoping they would get a new director…cause i didnt really feel she did the best job…she went off the story line and left out important things..changed a few things to much.. it was too Tween-ish and something like twilight needs a good creative director that understands the story&Emotions and a good screen writer that wont mess up the story.

I hope they replace her with a GOOD FEMALE director =]

  • twilightfan14

WOW! I am almost too shocked to be coherent at this point. Tomarrow sure will be interesting, won’t it?
I just saw Twilight again today for the 4th time-I love it more every time I see it and you notice little things you didn’t notice before.
Someone else said Harry Potter did fine with different directors and I guess that’s true. But what really worries me is the budget question-New Moon MUST have a bigger budget. And a FEMALE director. If you have to get rid of somebody, I think a new screenwriter would have been the way to go. Like I said a few days ago, money and power corrupt and Summit’s people are starting to sound like all the other “players” out there. Souless and money-hungry. I hope I’m wrong because all of us really care about this story and want it done right and respectfully. I’m just not sure Summit agrees.

  • http://myspace.com/darkhabits Lissete [Frerard Addict]

You people are so rude! You should all be thankful for Catherine instead of being so rudely and visibly happy about her being fired. She had the passion and creativity to make this happen! If it weren’t for her, Summit would have made this into just another stupid Hollywood vampire blockbuster. And I bet you they will still try to do that. Catherine should have been given what she wanted. Without her, I don’t know how they are going to pull off the special effects needed in New Moon with very little money. Really, if she were so terrible guys, don’t you think Stephenie Meyer would have said something? So I just hope they find a good enough director now. Because I don’t know about them, but I wouldn’t want millions of hardcore Twilighters after me with torches and pitchforks!

  • Heather

See ya, Catherine… best news I could have gotten today! She, the editing team and (let’s face it…) the screenwriter all butchered it. That movie could have been done much better if they had stuck to the core of the story…the relationship development. The added scenes that were not even in the book, the lousy lines that were substituted for ones in the book, the combination of the meadow scene and the “I know what you are scene”, and the ommission of some of the greatest scenes in the book ALL were completely unacceptable!

While they are at it – recast Bella! Can’t stand Stewart. I thought she did a lousy job. Love Pattinson as Edward, and Taylor was pretty good as Jacob (though I have no idea how they are going to age and grow him for New Moon…)

  • Chelsea Heilman

    THANK GOD! she’s finally fired.
the series will be so much better without her.
    stop catering to little girls…

  • kerri

Wow! Im shocked. Im actually sad because Cathrine was a big ball of energy! But it’s not the end of the world people. Harry Potter has done amazing with five directors and to be honest, Im actually excited to see what direction the next director will go with. Somthing had to have gone down, mabey she was demanding more money? Who knows? Mabey Summit needed a director with more CGI experience? Who knows? Dont fret….we’ll be fine!

  • Tessa

THIS IS AWFUL! The whole flow of the movies as one entity will be ruined. What are they thinking. If this is true- the new director better keep to the book and the mood Catherine created. I am severely disappointed. Hopefully the special effects wont be over done and if it is a man he will keep to the love story but keep it real and not make it cheesy. If I was Rob, Kristen and the rest of the cast- I would protest to bring Catherine back!

  • Sarah

I’m so happy! This is such good news. I felt the whole time that the biggest weakness was the directing.

  • Tippy

I’m actually in shock at the moment. I REALLY thought it was a done deal that CH would direct NM and they were just not announcing anything because of some non-disclosure law or something. I’m kind of ambivalent about it. I LOVE the movie, it’s freaking awesome, but I don’t think it’s impossible for someone else to come in and make NM just as awesome, if not more so.
A lot of people are saying that Summit has handled this poorly, but it seems to me that this news was broken before Summit was ready to make the official announcement, and their hand was forced to go ahead and make it official. It was VERY poor timing, considering CH and cast are still promoting it across the globe, and that’s another reason I think it’s more likely that Summit HAD to make the announcement now, instead of in a week or two.

I also think a LOT of people are jumping ahead of everything. Calm down. They don’t even have a completed script, a director, or a full cast announced yet…we have NO idea what New Moon will be like, and we won’t until we start seeing clips and stuff from the set, and we shouldn’t judge it before it’s even begun being filmed! Breathe. Relax. Find your happy place. It’ll be fine. Trust me, Summit understands how important this franchise is, and they don’t wanna screw it up. They are trying to avoid screwing it up. They know that if the fans hate it, we’ll come after them with pitchforks and torches!
What is most important to me is if SM approves of the movie, when it’s all said and done. She approved Twilight and that makes it so much better to me. If she had hated it, I would have too. I’m sure that Summit is aware of how we all listen to SM and how important it is that she’s happy with the final product. Remember, they let her have an awful lot of say with the first movie, which normally does not happen.

At the end of the day, we won’t know what really happened…ever. Both sides will stick with the cover story and the amicable parting of ways bit. Summit will find a new director, who will have to spend a good deal of time reassuring us all that he/she is just as in love with this story as well all are, and we’ll all go flocking to the theater when NM is released, just like we did with Twilight. And it’ll be fine. It really will. The powers that be in Hollywood did not get to be the powers that be by being stupid. Summit won’t mess this up. That’d be suicide. So relax, everyone, and just enjoy the ride.

  • Chez

I can’t say i’m honestly shocked with this. I have read each book twice, and seen the movie twice. I have to say i was very disappointed with the movie. There were far too many aspects of the book that should have been in the movie that were not. I know book to movie lose a lot in translation but this one lost way too much. Where was the build up to Edward and Bella’s romance? There wasn’t in my opinion. Where was the relationship between Alice and Bella? It wasn’t there. I understand there was a low budget to make twilight but i still believe that they could have done better with what they had. An example of this would be Bad Boys 1 19,000,000 budget and the movie then brought in over 150,000,000 and spun a part 2. Bad Boys was an amazing movie. So again I just think they could have done better. In my personal opinion the movie did so well at the box office because of the ‘young adult’ crowd. They have read these books, they seen the trailers and fallen in love with the next ‘hollywood hunk’. Does the ratings it’s getting have anything to do with the quality in which this movie brings us? I personally don’t think so. Will i buy the DVD when it comes out? Of course. Will i go and see New Moon? Of course. I just hope for the fans sake and not screaming little ones that New Moon will in the end be better than what they have given us in Twilight. I have also read “rumoured or not i don’t know” That Summit wants Robert Pattinson to appear more in New Moon the movie than he does in the book, is that because he’s the teen heart throb and they feel they won’t get as much in the box office if he’s not in the movie more? Is it all about numbers? I believe it is. I hope that if this is their plan that they do not go too far away from the books story line.

  • cate

I’m very relieved at this news. I was not happy with Catherine’s direction of Twilight, there were a lot of things that could have been done better. I wonder if Summit took note of the many fans who critized the job Catherine did with Twilight and were sensitive to that. Part of me hopes that she will be replaced by a woman, but honestly, I just want the best person for the job, and it that’s a guy, so be it. I have read that Summit wants to find a way to give Robert Pattinson more screen time than the book calls for, and as much as I love Robert, I do not want the book altered in any way. Summit, are you reading this, NO WAY, do NOT mess with the book. There is a reason that Edward is out of the picture for a large part of the book. If you mess with that, you ruin the story. I hope the new director doesn’t disappoint

  • Mary

I’m pretty upset that Ms. Hardwicke will not be directing New Moon. I thought that she was absolutely amazing with Twilight. She pulled a decent movie with whatever short time she had and she has a brilliant imagination. They really should have kept her on. She’s enthusiastic and so energetic and the cast clearly loved her because they boasted about her ALL THE TIME.

What they should have done was can the screenwriter, Melissa Rosenberg. I’m sorry she is horrible. Beyond horrible. Obviously Catherine Hardwicke had to work with what was handed to her.. and the screenwriter messed everything up.. I mean COME ON.. she didn’t even want Bella to go to Phoenix to “save her mom.” She wanted to make it all based around Charlie and Catherine was the one who convinced her to keep it as close to the book as possible or the fans would go absolutely insane. And since the script for New Moon is already done, I don’t even want to know what Rosenberg has done to it.

  • Rachel

    Look. its for the best.

Twilight is very good. i feel protesting is a little much. respect the decision and lets see for more to come on twilight saga journey. i mean the books are amazing, its honestly for the best. Who ever they will choose they choose. We should’nt PRE JUDGE. give it time. things will work out.
but i do wish only the best for catherine. and its gonna suck when she will be asked Why this happened.

but i hope New moon works out i really do. fans we just need to hope and believe thats all.

  • Ruby Red

I am very glad she will not be able to direct the second one. And I DO hope they hire a man to direct this. For all the fans worried that “a man will change this” COME ON! Tell me ONE good love story a female has directed thus far? I am a woman and I know we can do it too, but to be double standard and say men cant understand or interpret love is plain stupid. William Shakespear a MAN wrote some of the BEST love stories we know. Nicholas Sparks again, a MAN wrote the cult classic “The Notebook” and Titanic, and a lot of other great love stories have been directed by men. So please back down and most people on here would FAIL to recognize what good theater is all about.

You can’t go based on your emotions or prejudice that a man cannot possibly do New Moon any justice. Im pretty sure it will be amazing, and wont have cheesy ackward moments.

We should hope that a great director be it man or woman is willing to take this and give it they’re all.

Also I hope S.M takes more pride in her work and gets involved with the movie. J.K Rowling is SO involved with Harry Potter, from casting, to approving or vetoing the screenplay she has WRITTEN the extra stuff that was added to the movie because only SHE would know what would happen as it is her story.

Stephenie Meyer needs to step up and defend her creation, because the first one was pissed on.

I can only hope New Moon will be awesome. If not the only thing taking me there will be Rob.

  • jackstromath

This is a good thing. I’m also curious as to why you people are so set on having a female director. Why does it matter? As long as it’s a good film, it shouldn’t. Assuming that a woman can portray a love story better than a man is idiocy. IDIOCY OK?

lol. Some of you people are so noob it’s not even funny.

A+ to whoever made this decision. YOU HAVE MY THANKS.

  • mary

i’m not sure if i will be happy or sad. As long they replace her with another FEMALE director. Twilight is for girls, and a female should direct it. Bring in Sofia Coppola! :D

  • Jodeth cullen

    WHAT THE HELL!!
I LOVED THE MOVIE AND CATHERINE(EVAN THIUGH SHE IS A LITTLE SCARY)!!LOL
    BUT STILL THIS OS BOGUS!!
EVEN THOUGH TWILIGH TCOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER AND THEY TOOK OUT SOME OF MY FAVORITE THINGS(BLOOD TYPING) BUT STILL!!
IF THEY HIRING A DUDE TO DIRECT NEW MOON THEN THE PEOPL AT SUMMIT ARE COMPLETE MORONS!!
IF THOS NEW DIRECTOR DOES A BETTER JOB THEN OK BUT IF NOT THE SUMMIT AND THE DITECTER IS GOING TO HAVE TO DEAL WITH A LOT OF ANGRY FANS!! WHICH WOULD BE REALLY FUN TO WATCH!!

  • Midori

Whoever it choose for as director, I hope it remains true to the book. There was talk about trying to include more of Rob, as much as I want to see more of Rob, I don’t think they should change anything. In Twilight they left a lot of important scenes out or they changed certain scenes. For people who didn’t read the book, they wouldn’t really know what actually happened. New Moon should be very exciting with the introduction of the Volturi. Twilight and its sequels are a amazing story and it could be spectacular and can be classics if done properly. Twenty years from now, the public look back and reminisce and think about Twilight and say ” I remember Twight saga, it was the the best movie I’ve ever seen”. They don’t make ‘em like that anymore.

  • JJA

I think this is good news for Twilight fans. The movie was a good start but could have been a lot stronger. The real thing Catherine got right was the casting – other than Jacob, and I’m sorry to say it but Taylor cannot pull this off in New Moon. As if he could appear threatening to anyone? Please! He has to be replaced with an actual native american actor (with his own gorgeous hair) who looks like he could kick the crap out of people.

In a perfect world, it would be JJ Abrams directing (Felicity, Alias, Lost, MI III). He understands it all – romance, action, story – but the execs at Summitt would never pay him, even if they could get him. Take heart – with any luck they will find a director, male or female – that doesn’t matter – who will be able to get the money for the effects and get the viewers out of endless closeups and back into the story. Let’s wait and see… – JJA

  • Angelina

I am exteremly happy! I mean it’s sad for Catherine but I didn’t like the way she took the film. Her and the screenwriter really could have done better. And I’m going to say it so don’t get mad at me….. I hope they get a man to be the director. *hides in the corner* I mean I liked Twilight but at points it seemed so cheesy I wanted to shrink down in my chair and try to pass as someone who wasn’t a fan of this film…. I love Twilight and I know the parts in the book we’re not cheesy (well except the fainting part =P) and well a man maybe would be better to convey it without the cheesy effect. And with the action with werewolvesand the volutri well a man might be better to show the fear and anguish of Bella and Edward’s reunion to where you feel it too. I’m not stereotyping here I’m just wondering what a mans take would be on the series ya know???

oh well either way I hope they find a good director and SUMMIT PLEASSSSSSSSSSSSSEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE INCREASE THE BUDGET!!!! DO YOU WANT TO LOSE ALL THESE FANS AND YOUR MONEY?!?!?!?! DON’T MAKE MISTAKES CAUSE IF YOU DO TWLIGHT FANS WILL SHOW YOU HOW LOYAL WE ARE BY NOT SEEING A MOVIE THAT TOTALLY GOES AGANIST THE BOOK.

    That’s all =)

  • Lexy C.

Well, this is an interesting development. I figured there was some drama going on behind the scenes of the negotiation. Catherine was saying publicly that the movie demanded a big budget and more prep time and Summit’s guy was saying the budget was just fine and they wanted to hurry and make the film to capitalize on the hype. So, they were obviously butting heads around the negotiation table.

Honestly, I think the screenwriter was the real problem, not the director. I could deal with a few shaky hand-held camera shots, but my boyfriend is a screenwriter, and I know that the major problem with Twilight was the writing and the budget, not the directing. The writer is responsible for bringing those character off the pages of the book and onto the screen. All Catherine had to work with was the written material and the budget she was given. And that script just didn’t capture the love story between Bella and Edward effectively. It didn’t capture the friendship between Alice and Bella effectively. I think they’re going to have to play a bit of catch up during the opening scenes of New Moon if they even want to make the relationships and the loss that Bella feels in New Moon realistic.

So, a new start. Maybe a new director will be able to coax a better performance out of Kristen Stewart. She was a little one-note for my tastes.

  • EdwardForever

I’m really getting annoyed with a lot of you that feels only a woman can direct this type of film. Obviously CH didn’t do a good job at it so I’m hoping for a male director at this point. As mentioned by many others this movie only made so much money because of the fan base! The end result of this adaptation was crap, a lot of you felt that way the first time you watched it and are now insisting that we watch the movie again because it gets better. I saw it twice and still feel the same way. Kirsten’s acting was not very good in this movie and as a director she should have gotten more emotions than overacting from her. I agree that SM should have voiced her opinion in the making of this movie because it really did not do justice to the story at all. I think maybe SM was just trying to be nice. I never knew anything about HP until the movie came out and I’m a fan now. And to hear how involved JKR was in the making of HP is what SM should have done with Twilight. I’m sorry but she couldn’t have possibly been that happy with the movie. J.K. Rowling would probably laugh at that.

  • Naikyy

    hi everyone!
    it’s the French twilighter.
Thus I come to tell what I saw of the interview of the actors…
Cathrine didn’t come. It wasn’t present and there is not had any comment on “Cathrine fired? ” Nobody has some to speak…
    Thus here.
There is nothing had again on the subject…
    Kisses with all

  • coco

Wow…that’s a little scary! I thought Catherine did a great job and just hope someone else can do as well or better! I definitely think a woman should direct this series because this love story is from a woman’s perspective.

  • lee

Well my only worry is that Summit is rushing to film New Moon. I know that they need to film these films back to back, since vampires never age, but at the same time I am worried that the film will reflect that. Just like twilight was filmed in such a short time, the film itself felt rushed as well. New Moon has a bit more detail and special effects needed, than Twilight. Well I just hope that the people at Summit get the greedy bug and butcher the remaining books of Twilight

  • Jackie

Ok so I had a day to think about this and I’m a bit torn. Part of me wants Catherine and the other thinks it might be a little better if a new director comes on board for New Moon and Eclipse. However I think there are bigger issues on hand. It feels like Summit is trying to rush New Moon. I think they should just take their time with it. I know were all anxious for it, but I rather it come out later rather than sooner. The same applies to Eclipse. It seems like Summit is getting a bit greedy and trying to milk the Twilight Phenomenon while its stil hot, which I think is just plain stupid, they should know how loyal we are by now. Then there is the budget issue, one of the executives said that he didn’t think a much bigger budget will be needed for New Moon. I beg to differ! Actually I’m pretty sure we all do. There is werewolves and cliffdiving, mortocyce riding, trips to Italy, more sparkling! Do they not know that? We should all voice our concerns to Summit, hopefully they’ll listen. I also hope that the new director will be as passionate about the films and include Stephanie like catherine did. Well that’s all I have to say. I will be sending an email to Summit. If you agree with me, you should send one to.

  • Anmanda

    UGH :(
That makes me really sad / angry.
That’s such a stupid thing to do. I thought her directing was great. Watch the new director really mess up everything.

  • Karen

Im glad to hear this news! She totally made the Edward/Bella romance look shallow. There was no “i love you” from Bella (to Edward) before she departed for Arizona. They made it look like a crush. They didnt touch on the fact of Bella’s irratic heart beats around Edward, or that it stopped beating all together when they kissed. Their love was portrayed as a crush.
We need a director that will skip the swirling panoramic effects and focus on the depth/darkness/wickedness needed for New Moon. The Volturi need to scare the heck outta ppl! Bella and Edward need to express how deeply their love is and how bad it affects them when their apart.
The first person that came to mind when I was thinking of a new directro was the Guillermo del Toro. He is a visionary!
We shall all see what happens….

  • Alice

I am seriously shocked, Catherine Hardwicke is not doing New Moon. Those words just don’t fit into the same sentence…wow. And apprently she was really bad too? Eek. Oh dear. We’ve all been very misled. :/

  • leslie

Don’t get me wrong I loked the movie and I LOVE the books but I agree when ppl say they could have done a better job I thin kshe might have been TOO OUT THERE for the movie she was a little uncomprimising at time I read in EW. I hope for the best for her and especially the movies!!!

  • leslie

It think the TWILIGHT fans are bigger if not just as big as the JO BROs but I think comparing Rob to the JO BROs and especially in terms od fans it’s just not fallible… I mean have you seen these ppl… They’re crazy!!! And parents too! They go crazy for those boys and the Twilight books!

  • Katie

In a good film you shouldn’t notice the directing at all, and in this one there were moments that were just painful to watch and cheapened the entire film. The HORRIBLE directing telegraphed clearly to the viewer, to the point of being distracting. Love Twilight, and loved the movie as a fan anyway, but the one negative thing that stood out through the whole film was how shoddy the directing was.

Twilight SHOULD have been an AMAZING film – for anyone, book fan or not – and the poor direction held it back from being all that it could be. I for one am thrilled that someone new will be at the helm for the next go round!

  • Francisca Ellis

This is surely a really educational and targeted posting. Although my opinion is different from that of the author, I find that that is fantastic internet site. I’ll certainly join Rss in this terrific as well as distinctive web log.
