DID BREAKING DAWN MAKE YOU YAWN?

Posted September 18th, 2008 By: 28 Comments »

BREAKING DAWN BOOK COVERTANGOMAG.COM has posted their review of Breaking Dawn. Obviously, the author of this article wasn’t too happy with the book. She has some good points as well.

As we all know, there have been many mixed reviews about Breaking Dawn. Since the format is completely different and detached from the rest of the series, many were left surprised. But then again, many were pleased to see the change of pace and the way she went about approaching this last installmant of the book.

She goes on to say:

Breaking Dawn, the final chapter in Stephanie Meyer’s addicting vampire love saga, should have been titled Breaking Rules. In the first three novels of the Twilight series, Meyers clearly outlined the laws of living that made this fantasy world so tangible. In this final book, however, she ignores everything she’s had us believe to create a novel that is filled with unnecessary drama and plot twists. Breaking Dawn speeds toward a climax that ultimately fails to deliver.

Edward’s romantic vampire was portrayed as weak, depressed and a pushover (the complete opposite of the vamp we’ve come to know and love). Our heroine Bella, in possibly the books most frustrating execution, constantly complains about life, making it extremely unlikely that you’ll ever want to read the book over again.

I didn’t fall asleep reading Breaking Dawn, in fact I stayed up all night to finish it. I did, however, feel distanced from the Edward I had come to know and love. How about you? What do you think?

After reading BD I thought didn’t SM wright that super Fast in like 2 months??

  • http://www.myspace.com/dazzledbyedward Lynn

Hm, now that you mention it, I agree with what you said about feeling distanced from Edward. But I also stayed up late to finish reading Breaking Dawn ;D

  • Selena

Hmmm, Can’t say that i agree with you on this one. In Eclipse, Stephenie Meyer spoke of how Edward claimed to be over his irrevocable blood lust for Bella and if i recall, in the first book he said he was going to break all the rules by dating Bella. In Breaking Dawn, Bella and Edward are due to get married, therefore wouldn’t you expect to see a lovey-dovey Edward? Bella did complain a bit too much, but not as much as in Eclipse, when she complained non-stop about Jacob being sad. I don’t think it was a bad book though, I Still think New Moon was the Worst ^_^

  • http://twilightersanonymous.com/ Jacob Black

I disagree w/ New Moon being the worst. It was just a tough pill to swallow, but it was still well-done. I’ve heard many people pretty much going to the end of the book to see if Edward comes back

Part of the art of writing is getting people to have emotion, to react to their story and what characters go through.

How can the author flesh out high & happy parts of stories without low points?

In my opinion, it would be unfair to isolate New Moon. If you take it as a whole, the series wouldn’t have the same impact without the ride we went through in New Moon.

    Thoughts?

Breaking Dawn had its boring parts. It dwelled on aspects that weren’t important. New Moon was the best. It showed heartbreak, friendship, and happiness. I think Steph could’ve saved a few details in BD, but oh well.

  • Maha

i liked all the books yeah new moon wuz a bit un-interesting with out edward buh it was very well done!
and i stayed up every single night till like 3am to finish the books!
and i believe they were beautifully written and well done to Stephanie Meyer!

  • Jackie

With the first 3 novels I was addicted and could bare to put them down. Breaking Dawn wasn’t bad, but wasn’t my favorite one in the series. I was bored in one part but other than that it was good. I thought I would always be annoyed with Jacob from New Moon, but understood and stopped being too annoyed when I read his book in Breaking Dawn.

  • Edward_is_mine

I completely enjoyed Breaking Dawn as I did the other books. I think it was well thought out and I enjoyed seeing another demention to the characters such as Jacob, Leia and Seth. For me, I thought Edward’s story progressed and I didn’t feel he was left out. I saw him grow as a character with the addition of marriage and child. He seemed happy to me which is what I had wanted for his character from the beginning. I was also happy with the ending. The Cullen’s didn’t want to fight the Volturi. If they had and won, they wouldn’t want to police the vampire world and if they didn’t then the non-veggie vamps would get out of control. I have since read the book twice and have enjoyed it as much as the other three. I am just hopeful for more some time in the future.

  • keighly

no way, it was awesome:) i thought the first was the best, but breaking dawn was second. yay team edward!

  • Amanda

I enjoyed all the books except i would of liked if you would have wrote more books, at the back of breaking dawn when it says the end i cryed :(

  • Lexi Cullen

I thought that BD ROCKS!!! it made me cry, giggle, and cry some more!! just what I wanted!!!

  • VanessaC

OH WOW… That is SO ironic about the title of the article, “did Breaking Dawn make you yawn?” b/c the night the book came out, I stayed up until 9:00 p.m. the NEXT day (or night, really) reading it, b4 finally succumbing to complete exhaustion and waking up early the next morning (Sunday) to finish the last couple of chapters that I just hadn’t been able to finish b4 falling asleep- b/c I couldn’t put the book down AT ALL. However, that was somewhat to be expected, since it was the newest book and I was desperate to find out what happened. But the really amazing thing is- and this is what makes the title of the article so ironic- that I just got done rereading the entire saga a couple of days ago, and found that- although I find all of the books hard to put down- Breaking Dawn was the one that I just found IMPOSSIBLE to stop reading (unhealthily so- meals were missed and sleep was practically nonexistant until I finished it), even though I had already read it before and knew what was going to happen. A fairly close second was Eclipse, and then New Moon- mainly b/c I always want to read it as fast as possible so I get to the part where Edward comes back-, and last was Twilight. This is not necessarily the order I would place the books in as far as my preference for the book as a whole, but just the order I would place them in for most to least exciting/addicting to read. My order of preference would probably be: Breaking Dawn and Eclipse (they are equal, there’s no way I can decide between them), Twilight, and then New Moon (no offense to Stephenie, it’s just that my favorite character is gone for most of the book). And about Edward being “distant” in Breaking Dawn, I think that’s an interesting opinion, and I’ve noticed a lot of people feel that way, but I just don’t really see it- not any of the times I’ve read it. Idunno if I’m missing something, but I just never felt that way at all. Maybe (this could be totally wrong, and it is not meant to be in the least offensive, I’m just kinda thinking out loud- so to speak) ppl feel like he’s distant b/c a)a large portion of the book is written from Jacob’s perspective, therefore we obviously don’t get as much about Edward as we do when Bella’s telling the story, b/c Edward’s almost all that she thinks about-and what we do get is from a very different point of view so it doesn’t come across the same way; and b)for the part of the book that IS told from Bella’s perspective (the beginning and the end), Edward is, for the most part, very happy- which is extremely different from the other books, when he spends most of the time hating himself and being miserable- this causes him to maybe seem “distant” just b/c there is so much less drama going on between him and Bella, and he has finally stopped hating himself, so not as much interaction between them is described, b/c if it was then the book really would have been boring b/c there was no real tension or conflict between he and Bella to write about. OK, I need to stop b/c this post is REALLY long, but i just had so much to say about this, and please I would love anyone to comment(respectfully) to agree or disagree with the stuff I said- it would be nice to discuss.

  • Tracey

I completely agree with the reasons why everyone thinks Edward is Distant. It wouldn’t make sense to write much about Edward from Jacob’s perspective. The fact that they’re grown closer (at least they don’t completely hate each other) adds to that. There’s no longer a huge conflict between those two characters.

I thought Breaking Dawn was the BEST book out of the series. I enjoyed the happy ending, and when Bella was finally able to allow Edward to see and hear all her thoughts I wanted to cry. The book would not have been the same had some of the characters died trying to fight the Volturi. I also agree with the point someone brought up about how if Stephenie had allowed them to fight, it would have ruined the story. The ending would then be impossible to write.

I read the first 12 chapters of Midnight Sun that she posted on her website…although I struggled with decision of if I should read it at all. In the end I sat down and read it all at once. And now I’m sad that I have nothing else to read. Anyway, the first twelve chapters really allowed me to get to know Edward’s character better and EXACTLY what he was thinking everytime Bella saw emotions flicker through his face or when he suddenly became angry. After reading those 12 chapters I felt as though his character in Breaking Dawn made perfect sense…I would suggest reading those chapters if you’re looking for something else to read!

  • EdwardsSnackCake

I do admit BD was not my favorite book but, all good things must come to an end. I loved the beginning but found that the tail of the book there was a dragging with the event of the volturi and cullen clan. I wanted it to get over with. I also was irritated with Alice and Jasper for “bailing out” on the family but, I had to hang in there and understand them for what they did. I liked the happy ending and even though I didnt get as emotional as I did reading Eclipse I did enjoy all the books and the way the flowed into this lovely story of true love.

  • VanessaC

Tracey- Thanks for responding- I know I wrote a LOT to have to read through, so I really appreciate that. And, also, I love what you said-I agree with everything you said completely! (except for the part about Midnight Sun, b/c- no offense whatsoever to you or anyone else who read the leaked chapters- I just can’t bring myself to read them. not only does it feel wrong, I also know that it would kill me to not be able to read the whole thing, and I don’t want to put myself through that torture- so I can’t really agree with you about that, only because I haven’t read it, but I probably would agree if I had read it) But other than that, I’m with you, like, 110% !!!

  • Larissa

Okay VanessaC I agree with what you said about Edward. When I first heard people saying that I thought that I had missed something then I reread it and listened to it and he’s just as much in there as before, I do think that since it was done differently it’s harder to realize and that in Jacob’s POV it’s not all focused on Edward. And both you and Tracey make a good point about Bella and Edward’s relationship and such.

I couldn’t put the book down and when I had to I couldn’t stop thinking about it.

I loved Breaking Dawn and I think Stephenie Meyer did an amazing job with it and the characters. I don’t think the characters are only ‘a shadow’ or OOC, because they’re still them, but you have to see them through a different perspective now.

I love all four books. And as for her writing it in 2 months, we can’t forget that she already had Forever Dawn done, she just had to change it around with certain parts, so…

  • VanessaC

Larissa- thank you for responding also. Maybe i’m really weird (Maybe? let’s make that a definitely), but I love to have ppl actually responding to what I wrote. it makes me feel special- lol jk. I agree 100% with everything you said too- like about having to see the same characters from a different perspective, and how Stephenie already had Forever Dawn written, she just had to change it around a little. Thanks again for responding- it makes me feel better to know I’m not the only one who feels that way about Breaking Dawn.

  • http://www.myspace.com/lauriylonen RC

I loved Breaking Dawn. I stayed up till 9am to finish it the night I got it. Tho some things could of had more detail lol but I don’t know. I liked it. It ended how I wanted it to. And yes, Edward was a bit different in it but I just really enjoyed the book. Im a sucker for happy endings.

  • I luv Edward

NO BREAKING DAWN WAS MY FAVORITE. COME ON, I MEAN SHE DID BREAK HER RULES ABOUT HAVING CHILDREN WITH VAMPIRES BUT STIL MY FAVORITE THEN TWILIGHT,ECLIPSE FINALLY NEW MOON.

  • Ali

Im on breaking dawn right now and i think its pretty good so far.I still think that SM sorts rushed through it cause it was done pretty fast and its a big book.I sorts think that new moon was the best even u no edward wasnt in it to much but it really described the relationshp between bella and jacob. But i was happy at the end when she went to save edward but at the same time for once i hated edward because he left her like that just wasnt right.I remember her saying that she said *u have to leave now? y now how about wait another year* or sumthing like that but i dont remember him saying to bella that they were gunna leave.unless my memories just going lol

  • kerri

Er, the fourth enstallment was what everyone was waiting for! This beautiful couple struggled through years of obsticles just to be together. Finally, Stephanie allows a few chapters to just let her characters be one, husband and wife. This person obviously has a mental defect if they wernt touched by Edwards nerves on the honeymoon, and Bellas wedding experience, let alone the nerve shattering moments while Bella was pregnant! Gah! What an idiot, I’ve read it over and over again and continue to read it in years to come.

  • Larissa

    VanessaC:
No problem. I agree, having someone reply to what you’re saying is nice, and it shows that people are listening and you’re not alone. I’m glad that I’m not alone, although when I first went on line that Monday after it came out I thought I was, now I know better. :)

RC: I read it until I finished it, it was amazing, I didn’t want to put it down. And I agree I love the happy endings.

I luv Edward: But see all she ever said was the Vampires could not get pregnant. She never said that a male vampire couldn’t get a female human pregnant.

Ali: I never hated Edward in New Moon. I was with Bella, when I read that book I felt horrible when Edward left, but I never hated him. I felt along the lines that she did (although no I didn’t go into a comatose state. LOL), but in terms when everything just was sad. I did like having her and Jacob’s relationship explored. Edward told Bella right before he left that they were leaving.

kerri: I loved seeing Bella and Edward being able to enjoy themselves and just be with each other. I loved the feelings that were portrayed from the different circumstances that happened. I love the book and I don’t mind reading it along with the others over and over again.

  • Autumn

Ok. New Moon was crucial in setting a lot of things into play…mainly Jacob’s role in Bella’s life. By the end of the book, her character became stronger. Eclipse was great, but very different from the first two books as well. Really, each book is absolutely different from the rest, yet they all tell a critical part of the story. As for Breaking Dawn, frankly I would have been pissed to read nearly 3,000 pages and have it end badly. I was very pleased with it. I guess my only complaint was that the sex scenes weren’t descriptive enough for my taste. I am 24 though and I know it is targeted at a younger audience. :( But oh well… I just let my imagination run wild there. Each book is it’s own. I sincerely hope Midnight Sun gets completed. I like to take it and Twilight side by side and read the passages out of them together. It is interesting to read them simultaneously and see how differently Bella and Edward interpret each other’s reactions at times. I love doing that.

  • Autumn

Someone mentioned Midnight Sun… I actually read it first. I saw movie trailers, found out about the books (including the leaked one), and decided to read a chapter or 2 from the vampire’s perspective out of curiosity. I was hooked. I read all 12 chapters at once and went out and bought the series. If I hadn’t read Midnight Sun first, I wouldn’t have understood Edward’s character throughout the rest of the book as well. He would have come across as well… an ass to start with. But because I knew the pain he was going through just being near her in the first book, I could totally empathize with him.

  • VanessaC

For the record though breaking dawn was awful, it was boring and didn’t really hold my attention for long and I hope never to read that sorry excuse for a book ever again, and Autumn you suck.

  • Ammen

well i personally stopped in the middle of new moon cause it was soooo boring and bella was so bland and the beggining was sad :’( but i like the original twilight the best…for now im inly on chapeter 20 of eclipse smone told me that bella and edward break three beds in Breaking Dawn being a typical guy u can guess im lookin foward to that!!!

  • Madeleine

Wow I just completely agree with what everything VanessaC wrote and the people who replied to her! Thanks Vanessa for your opinion, it was a very good contribution to the comments to this article! Your exact words on this article are coming out of my mouth, everything you said I agree with :) Thanks again, and some people have said there shouldn’t be a BD movie! :O I definitely think there should, no matter if it will lose fans or whatever!

  • yawning

I absolutely loved the first three books, I was so addicted to them I couldn’t put them down. Breaking Dawn however is torture. I am struggling to finish the book and I am literally hating every minute of it. If I didn’t have to finish the book for my sanity I would have stopped well before now.

Maybe I just didn’t buy into their love story as well as I thought I did? Because really if you wanted them to be together you would be happy for Bella to be a vampire?? I was disappointed she became a vampire and disappointed in Edward for letting her be so stupid and controlling of him. New Moon was my favourite and it’s just sad to finish an enjoyable story with Breaking Dawn.
