E! Online is reporting that Dakota Fanning has been offered the role of Jane in ‘New Moon’.

Dakota Fanning…with fangs?

It’s possible. I can exclusively report that the 14-year-old child star—she turns 15 on Feb. 23—is in talks to play Jane opposite Robert Pattinson & Co. in New Moon, the upcoming sequel to box office megahit Twilight.

“There were no auditions,” a source reveals. “They just offered it to her outright, and now they’re in negotiations. They’ve been going back and forth.”

Jane is a member of Italy’s Volturi, the most deadly group of bloodsucking killers in author Stephenie Meyer’s’ best-selling series.

In the casting notice we got our hands on earlier this month, Jane is described as a petite blonde with a “Botticelli angel-like face…[and] crimson irises.”

While fellow Volturi guards Demetri & Felix “are three times the size of her, they are terrified of her,” the casting notice reads.

Coincidentally (or maybe not), an online petition started by a Twilight fan already asks the studio, Summit Entertainment, to cast Fanning because she would be “perfect” for the role.

Early last month, Entertainment Weekly suggested Pushing Daisies star and Broadway diva Kristin Chenoweth. “Her voice is certainly high enough, and at 4’11”, she’s also short enough,” writer Amy Wilkinson proposed.

Director Chris Weitz is expected to start shooting New Moon in March in the U.S. and Italy. If all goes as planned, the movie will hit theaters on Nov. 20.

Okay, wow! Dakota was one of your nominations for our “New Moon: Pick Your Dream Cast” project, but didn’t end up winning. I think she would make a great Jane though, and I am really interested to hear if this is true.

    Lauren, like I said, Bella thought Jane was a young boy, when she first saw her. I quoted the book. So Cheno would not make a good Jane. She is small, but to old.

    hey Dakota fanning would be great as Jane and hello to the guy she din’t se Jane s as bieng young llokign as above, did you pay atteino ot the books but yeah serisouly Dakota would great. seriosuly she would be but look aroudn for actres, to if it does’nt work out eer maybe Emily osment, let her audtion. I din’t tihk her as for but Dajota would be great.

    I actually had a nightmare last night that I was being attacked by Jane and her rabid mutant rabbit. So NOT Dakota Fanning in my dream, but a great casting choice!

    Why can’t I just dream about Edward? *sigh*

    I don’t like the idea of Dakota Fanning playing Jane at all. No offense to DF I just really don’t like the idea. I would have a hard time watching her & she’s not at all how I pictured Jane.
    I really think they should cast more unknown actors in the rest of the movies like they did w/Twilight. That’s one fact I really liked about Twilight is there weren’t “famous” people & you know that they’re in it because they loved the story.

    To all those saying she’s too young – she’s 15, which is about what I pictured Jane as considering all the interviews and Q and A’s I’ve heard from Stephenie indicate she’s very young.

    If Aro was forced to change Jane and Alec when they were younger than he’d want them to be, I’d say the 15-16 range would be about right. Plus Bella refers to Alec, her twin, as a boy.

    I think Dakota is a fine choice. She has the acting chops to be certain – and since everyone else’s hair is dyed, including Rob’s, why would her hair color even be a factor? The only person who doesn’t have their hair messed with by dye or a wig is Kristen.

    sheesssh people calm down. we don’t know if it is true or not. Plus remember a lot of us hating the fact that Robert was going to be Edward. And, once we saw how he portrayed Edward a lot of us were like ‘wow, maybe he is good for the part” so before u blow ur whistle think about it and just wait until it is announced that she is GOING to be Jane. Then, we wait to see how she portrays it.

    I think Dakota would be perfect have you seen the roles tha Dakota has been taking lately. they definetly are not the roles of a pretty princess or anything. Shes into the dark and where she has to act evil. I think that she would be amazing

    Has anyone seen the trailers for “PUSH”? Dakota Fanning is too old to play a cherubic 4’11″ ish Jane. Someone more like Kirsten Dunst looked back 12 years ago or so (in visual age and rounded face) from the movie Interview with a Vampire would be more appropriate.

    HELL YES!!! If you’ve seen her more recent movies, you know she can handle the role and that she’s been both a blonde and brunette on screen.

    She’s not who I pictured in my head, but Jane’d be a hard one to cast precisely. Besides, she’s got that innocent look that can ADD to the fact her character is so evil… ups the “creepy” factor on my scale. :)

    I hope she takes it!

    I almost cried when I read this. Dakota Fanning is not who I pictured playing Jane at all! Don’t get me wrong, she is great atress, in kiddie movies, chick flicks, anything that no-one is going to take seriously. I just think that although she has an amazing acting range for someone of her age, scary and fullon characters such as Jane don’t fall into that range. I am a fan, but if this turns out not to be a rumor and if she smiles 24/7 on screen then she will have destroyed this role which could have launched and unknown’s career. An unknown could have played her better. I like her, but NOT for Jane.

    eh… I guess she’s ok… not really how i imagined Jane.. she’s always played the happy, giggly, peppy little girl… i don’t think she can handle this one… and Jane is one of my faves, so… i don’t want to be disappointed.

    I just saw on Yahoo’s OMG! pretty much the same article as E! but, this one says: “We are considering all actors that have the unique requirements for the look of Jane — Dakota being one of them,” a rep for Summit Entertainment told Access. ”

    So, at least we have something from Summit for speculation purposes…. I myself, hope she gets the role. = )

    omg i really really wanted Jodelle Ferland to be jane i think she is exactly how i pictured jane that kinda bugs me that dakota fanning is being offered it… I think they should get a no name to do it

    I think Dakota would be really good as Jane, and would portray the role well.
    She has that really innocent look to her face, but I can just see her with a creepy, evil smile on her face.
    I guess I don’t really care that much, but now I’ve gotten used to the idea as Dakota as Jane.
    Oh, and Kristina, Kristen’s hair was dyed AND had like a half-wig thing in it for the movie. Just thought I’d point that out (:
    And she also had to wear contacts.

    I think she would be an amazing Jane! She certainly has the acting chops to do it. I always pictured Jane as very child-like and thought some of the other actors mentioned for the role seemed way too old. If you listen to Dakota talk in interviews she has an aura of maturity not usually found in someone so young, so I believe that will also aid her in portraying a vampire that has lived as long as Jane has.

    I think Dakota would be fine. She already has ties to Summit with “Push” and many actors take other factors besides money into consideration when taking roles. These movies are huge and who’s to say she’s not a fan?

    Jane and Alec are in their teens–around 13 according to some bios? I always pictured Jane as angelic. Isn’t that a part of what makes her so disturbingly evil?

    I’ve never personally seen Jane as a child. A child would be stuck in a child’s mentality. See the immortal toddlers, mentioned in Breaking Dawn and Eclipse (not in chronological order). I picture Jane as a fifteen or sixteen year old, young enough to take childish pleasure out of pain but old enough to understand certain things.

    Dakota has proved that she can be cast for darker roles, but im my opinion, which nobody else has to agree with, she’s very flat and unconvincing- and most certainly no where near beautiful enough.

    Jane is a very controversial character, and in the end, it’s Summit Production’s choice.

    jodelle ferland, looks like what I imagined Jane would be, I mean Jane a blonde yuck and we know Ferland can do creepy. But I trust the casting people they did a great job for Twilight

    Who is Camilla Belle? Sorry, but I’d never heard of her before they “attached” her to Robert Pattinson. She is clearly not a friend first of all talking about him behind his back, and also trying to take advantage of his fame. Looks like sour grapes to me.

    I also pictured Jane with dark hair, though Dakota would be good for the roll, and i can do blonde. No Disney people. But I like Dakota. She should play the roll!

    I think she is too young to play this role. Jane looks more like a mature lady then a young 14 years old teen.

    Um… ok… I like Dakota just fine… but…

    Isn’t she a bit young for that role? I thought Jane was an ADULT character? Just small. I’m confused.

    I just can’t seem to get my head around it. I never thought of the character of Jane as being a barely-teen vampire.

    I think Dakota is okay but I was REALLY hoping that Jodelle Ferland could play Jane. Jodelle looks exactly as I imagined her and I think her acting skills with the role of Jane would be absolutely amazing. I think I might be a little angry if Jodelle doesn’t get the part.

    I personally DON’T think Dakota should play the role. Just because she’s small and has blonde hair doesn’t mean she’s the best for this role. And also, she’s too well known compared to the other actors. I think that someone that isn’t so famous should play her. I always pictured Jane with dark hair.
    My mom actually was going to send in pictures of me to the casting director, but if she gets the part, it’s too late.
    But we were saying, when we watch the movie, (my family are HUGE Twilight Saga fans) we’d think too much on how that’s sweet, little Dakota Fanning, not some terrifying, dark, bloodsucking Jane.

    And every little girl is like, “Wow! Dakota is perfect for the part!” Which she is not, because it’s just not HER. Yes, she is talented and pretty,
    but just not Jane.

    Seriously now I am confused. Is Jane blonde or brunette? I kind of always pictured her with black hair and Alec with blonde for some reason. But any how I like Dakota, I think she’s a really good actress. If there going for a blonde actress AnnaSophia Robb would also be good. ^_^
