E! ONLINE: NEW MOON CASTING SCOOP – DAKOTA FANNING AS JANE?

She was actually my second choice. Jodelle Ferland was my first choice. If Dakota would be chosen for the role, she would have to get a wig. In the book(pg456) She is described by Bella as follows:

“At first I thought it was a YOUNG BOY. The newcomer was as tiny as Alice, with lank, PALE BROMW HAIR, TRIMMED SHORT.The body under the cloak was slim and androgynous. But the face was too pretty for a boy. The wide-eyed, full-lipped would make a Botticelli angel look like a gargoyle.”

I WONDER, IF SHE WERE TO PLAY JANE, WHO WOULD BE ALEC?

I love Dakota Fanning and everything but I can’t really see her as a vampire let alone Jane. I don’t think she could be frightening enough to be Jane. I want someone who isn’t as famous as her. The movie turned out well in the first one b/c the actors & actresses weren’t the most famous people.

I think she has a better chance of accepting it than there would have been previously because she has been working with Summit on PUSH, her movie with Camilla Belle, Chris Evans, and Djimon Hounsou

– which obviously shows her as wanting to breakout and play different types of characters.

I’m sure she would be costly, but it would give the movie an interesting amount of name recognition.

Dakota Fanning is good and all, but I think the film should feature some less well-known actors/actresses. Jodelle Ferland would be perfect for the role! She’s been in enough horror films (Silent Hill, The Messengers) to portray the scary vampire to the audience. Plus she has brown hair already! No need to dye it!

PLEASE let this just be a rumor! When I read the books i pictured her just as she was described. Angelic and innocent looking, not ackward and creepy. Admit it Dakokta is a creepy looking little girl. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let this be a rumor. Why put her in it???

also it says (in the special edition of newmoon i think) that the body under the cloak – which was darker, almost black – was slim and androgynous.

No Disney Channel girly… no it won’t happen! It is Dakota Fanning all the way and she could either wear a wig or color her hair brown. For Alec (what about Aro, Caius, Marcus, Heidi, Felix, Demetri), need to find another boy actor who is either at or near the actress’s age. Go Dakota! I think she has it in her to really just kind of “pop!” and we will be “OMG! Can’t wait to see her again in BD!” (I hope they do…they can’t just leave us cliffhanging!)

I think Dakota Fanning will be a good choice for Jane. She is a great actress and i feel that she is capable of doing Jane. After all, she has been with Summit for her movie Push, so they are definitely confident about her getting the role.

I think Dakota would be great. I really wanted an actress, young enough that had a good resume under her belt. If this is just a rumor, it’s a cruel one because Dakota would be great. She has to be able to pull off a very flat, monotoned, bored , deadly voice.

I was wondering why people kept saying she was a child, cause I just thought she was short. I pictured Imelda Staunton (Umbridge in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix)when I first read the book, but I can see Kristen Chenowick doing it too. I never saw her as a child. And it irratates me that the casting call says “blond”. But if they’re going to use a child actor Dakota would be good, she has the range to play Jane.

I have nothing against Dakota – but she is not the right pick for Jane. This role should be played by an unknown actress who does not remind people of other movies. When I think of the Jane in the book, I don’t see Dakota Fanning’s face!!!!!

Ummm… Guys, I really think it is just a rumor.
1. I have the actual casting notice for New Moon, and it says NOTHING about hair color (and if it did, why would they ask for a BLONDE?! Jane isn’t blonde, and they would not care about hair color anyway – wigs and dye are not hard to come by).
2. They say they heard this from “a source”. VERY specific. VERY credible… Too bad that could mean they just heard it from their cousin.
3. Signing on for New Moon means signing on for the rest of the series. Dakota Fanning is way too well known, too busy, and too highly payed for that to be ideal for her, Summit, or Twilight fans.
4. I have faith that Joseph Middleton is more creative than that. Dakota Fanning is the first person EVERYONE thought of, simply because there is only a handful of actresses in that age group that one can name. Of that group, Dakota is the most famous. It is as though someone just browsed Twilight forums to see what people were gossiping about. This is just Vanessa “Leah” Hudgens all over again.

As much as I like Dakota, I saw her at ComicCon and she’s seems too tall for Jane. Aren’t Jane and Alec supposed to be kind of small?

I agree with you, Staar84, I never imagined Jane as a child, I imagined a short adult with an angelic face.
I don`t think Dakota Fanning is mature enough to portray Jane, and if they did cast her then they would need to cast a teenager to play Alec too. They would have much more choice if they cast young adults.

I love Dakota Fannings work and as for her not being able to play a scary role like Jane. Does anyone remember Hide and Seek in which she played a girl who’s father had a split personality and what they showed at the end of the movie. I think she could totally pull off this role.

I am still trying to understand why anyone wants a big name star to play these roles. It will add to the “believeablity” of the movie and it will keep budgets much lower not to have big name stars in bit parts. Jane is not terribly important in New Moon, and if you get a big name star the tendency will be to expand roles or change the story to showcase them. While we know and love/hate each character, having a Hollywood personality play them is distracting, expensive, and completely unnecessary.

I think Dakota would make a GOOD Jane, but there are other people out there who would be GREAT.
I wont lie, when i read the books I guess I did sort of visualize Jane looking somewhat like Dakota (probably because she has that odd look about her which i don’t know how to describe).. but i think the part should really be done by someone less known.

The Fannings are creepy, and I think that’s a perfect choice for Jane. Granted, I don’t really LIKE her, but again, BOTH of them are CREEPY, so that works for me.

I think that Dakota is a perfect choice and here’s why. Jodelle still looks to childlike for me. Dakota is at that age now where she can play someone who is baby faced but is an adult. I have really liked all of the choices that Dakota has made thus far and think that this would be a good part for her to extend her range.

I think Jodelle Ferland would be a far more suitable – Fanning is too smiley and blonde. (I’m referring purely to hair colour – Jane is a brunette, isn’t she?) I also reckon Rachel Hurd-Wood and Jeremy Sumpter should be vamps somewhere, though I’m not sure who yet. What do you think?

i sincerely hope that this is not a rumor not because i do not like Dakota Fanning but that Twilight contains a cast of unknowns and i hope this would be continued in the following movies as well.

Jane was described as pretty and with looks that is more angelic than a Botticelli angel. I know this does not implies that Jane is a child but i believe a child with innocent looks and charisma would portray the role of Jane the best as no one would expect someone this angelic looking would be the deadliest of the group.

I think she would be a great choice! I can really see her as Jane. But…I’m not getting my hopes up until they offically cast her as Jane. I’m tired of all the rumors flying around out there about who is going to be in New Moon. I’m very eager to see the offical cast list.

I posted to the other article about how tight money is with movie making in this economy – then why use an actress who will need a bigger salary instead of going with an unknown talent (like they originally did for Twilight), so they can put more of the budget in other things i.e. special effects. Other considerations, the part of Jane is kind of a small role in comparison, to say, Aro in New Moon, and with Kristen and Rob they don’t need a Star. If they cast a young girl like Dakota instead of a small youthful looking woman what will they do if they can’t get the movies made before she has a growth spurt, and they have to cast a boy as Alec – they will have the opposite problem that Taylor had for Eclipse. Also, to Staar84 I’m not sure what age Jane and Alec are but I read in one of SM interviews that Aro was waiting for them to grow up so he could change them for their talent and then he rescued them from burning at the stake which is why they are small/short/younger than the other vampires. I also like the idea of someone I don’t already identify with so many other roles.

I think Jodelle Ferland is an absolute PERFECT Jane, that’s how I’ve always seen her anyways. But Dakota is a solid choice, and you certainly can’t doubt her acting ability. Having already worked with her in “PUSH”, it seems Summit is set on her, and I’m ok with that. BUT, just like Rob, age becomes a HUGE issue. She is changing rapidly….in height and in facial appearance, if they plan on keeping Dakota for all four books/movies, then they better put a move on it.

I don’t like the idea of Dakota Fanning playing Jane at all. No offense to DF I just really don’t like the idea. I would have a hard time watching her & she’s not at all how I pictured Jane.
I really think they should cast more unknown actors in the rest of the movies like they did w/Twilight. That’s one fact I really liked about Twilight is there weren’t “famous” people & you know that they’re in it because they loved the story.

To all those saying she’s too young – she’s 15, which is about what I pictured Jane as considering all the interviews and Q and A’s I’ve heard from Stephenie indicate she’s very young.

If Aro was forced to change Jane and Alec when they were younger than he’d want them to be, I’d say the 15-16 range would be about right. Plus Bella refers to Alec, her twin, as a boy.

I think Dakota is a fine choice. She has the acting chops to be certain – and since everyone else’s hair is dyed, including Rob’s, why would her hair color even be a factor? The only person who doesn’t have their hair messed with by dye or a wig is Kristen.

sheesssh people calm down. we don’t know if it is true or not. Plus remember a lot of us hating the fact that Robert was going to be Edward. And, once we saw how he portrayed Edward a lot of us were like ‘wow, maybe he is good for the part” so before u blow ur whistle think about it and just wait until it is announced that she is GOING to be Jane. Then, we wait to see how she portrays it.

Has anyone seen the trailers for “PUSH”? Dakota Fanning is too old to play a cherubic 4’11″ ish Jane. Someone more like Kirsten Dunst looked back 12 years ago or so (in visual age and rounded face) from the movie Interview with a Vampire would be more appropriate.

I almost cried when I read this. Dakota Fanning is not who I pictured playing Jane at all! Don’t get me wrong, she is great atress, in kiddie movies, chick flicks, anything that no-one is going to take seriously. I just think that although she has an amazing acting range for someone of her age, scary and fullon characters such as Jane don’t fall into that range. I am a fan, but if this turns out not to be a rumor and if she smiles 24/7 on screen then she will have destroyed this role which could have launched and unknown’s career. An unknown could have played her better. I like her, but NOT for Jane.

So, at least we have something from Summit for speculation purposes…. I myself, hope she gets the role. = )

I think she would be an amazing Jane! She certainly has the acting chops to do it. If you listen to Dakota talk in interviews she has an aura of maturity not usually found in someone so young, so I believe that will also aid her in portraying a vampire that has lived as long as Jane has.

I think Dakota would be fine. She already has ties to Summit with “Push” and many actors take other factors besides money into consideration when taking roles. These movies are huge and who’s to say she’s not a fan?

I’ve never personally seen Jane as a child. A child would be stuck in a child’s mentality. See the immortal toddlers, mentioned in Breaking Dawn and Eclipse (not in chronological order). I picture Jane as a fifteen or sixteen year old, young enough to take childish pleasure out of pain but old enough to understand certain things.

Dakota has proved that she can be cast for darker roles, but im my opinion, which nobody else has to agree with, she’s very flat and unconvincing- and most certainly no where near beautiful enough.

Jane is a very controversial character, and in the end, it’s Summit Production’s choice.

Who is Camilla Belle? Sorry, but I’d never heard of her before they “attached” her to Robert Pattinson. She is clearly not a friend first of all talking about him behind his back, and also trying to take advantage of his fame. Looks like sour grapes to me.
