E! ONLINE: HOW MUCH DID ‘TWILIGHT’ BOOST THE RATINGS FOR THE MTV AWARDS?
E! Online is reporting that the 2009 MTV Movie Awards was up a massive 76% (in terms of viewership) from last year. The audience was unsurprisingly huge, and they are crediting Twilight for a major part of this increase. Read more below:
Robert Pattinson just may be the best thing that happened to awards shows since Billy Crystal.With Pattinson and his Twilight mates heaped with buckets of ceremonial popcorn at Sunday’s MTV Movie Awards, the show, which also featured the debut of teaser trailer for the vampire gang’s upcoming New Moon, scored a whopping 76 percent more viewers than last year.
Its average audience of 5.3 million was the show’s biggest since 2004.
This is the second awards show this year in which a little bit of Pattinson has helped produce a whole lot of ratings. February’s Oscars, featuring Pattinson on presenting duty, saw its numbers zoom among teens and kids.
I’m not surprised one bit that Twilight had such a huge impact on the awards show. Sure, there were other cool features that viewers were promised (like an exclusive clip of Harry Potter and Transformers), but I think Twilight was without a doubt the front runner. I would have watched the awards show with or without all the Twilight-goodness, but the new trailer and everything was an added bonus.

I know I’m only one person but I’ve never paid attention to the MTV movie awards in the past, except for tuning in here and there after the endless reruns afterwards. I definitely tuned in like glue this time for my support of Twilight. And nope, I’m not surprised one bit that it had a lot to do with the cast, esp RP. He’s definitely being eyed everywhere by everyone!
I’m not surprised Twilight helped the ratings. The only reason I watched was to see the NM trailer. Otherwise I wouldn’t have & probably just found out online if Twilight won their awards.
Yep, I only watched it because of Robert Pattinson and because of the New Moon trailer. =)
I bet if Robert was a normal college kid.. like everyone else, he wouldn’t be so popular. He’d be hanging out @ the bar with his close friends and family every night. Some people are BORN with such destiny in life. It amazes me =)
He didn’t see such fame coming, and I wonder, was he looking for it?
It got me to watch… in a million years, I wouldn’t watch pretty much any MTV, especially awards shows, but I did for the New Moon trailer!
Speaking as a 34 year old who gave up MTV around 15 years ago, I can assure you the only reason I watched was for Twilight and most particularly Rob. For a person who had a lot of issues with the movie, I was still rooting every time it came up for and won an award. Rob definitely brings in an audience!
Back in the day, I used to watch tons of MTV, from TRL to the Movie Awards. But, they’ve strayed from the things I was interested in and now I’m nearly 29. So no, I wouldn’t have watched at all if it had not been for the trailer. I may have peeked in now and then to see if Rob was on screen for something, but otherwise, I probably would have only found out if they had won from somewhere else. I must say the show this year was good at pacing out it’s Twilight moments. I pretty much watched the whole thing since Twilight was on from beginning to end. But, some parts were just a bit too much to find amusing.
I never watch MTV. I just had to tune in for the awards since Twilight was up for so many! I thought they teased us very well with that trailer! I want more! I must say..I would have switched it off if it were not for that and getting to see Rob, Kristen and Taylor. Some of those stunts were just plain offensive! Nasty! And teens were watching that mess!
I love (quote) a little bit of Pattinson has helped produce a whole lot of ratings. He sure does… I loved the MTV Movie awards and yes had it not been for Rob and Twilight I would not have watched.
I do however watch the Oscar every year and this year I was so excited because Rob was going to present something, they showed him on the red carpet and everything, but low and be hold our stupid TV station, edited the Oscars so he was not shown, well the Hulk in me just exploded, OMFG I screamed at the TV where was Rob…I had to wait till the next day and watch that clip on-line.
I have always watched the movie awards, and Im not surprised one bit that Twilight helped the ratings! I mean practically every award Twilight was nominated for, it won! And the New Moon trailer was a plus!!
Yep, I’m one of those “increase” folks…I haven’t watched the MTV Awards in years, but I tuned in for the Twilight folks and the trailer. And yes, I watched the Oscars to see RPattz too.
All those yelling, screaming fans? Believe me, every director and producer in that auditorium knew that those screams translate into $$$ and rating points. Rob is absolute box office gold as long as he can pull in that type of fanbase.
I’m not surprised, I only tuned in to see Rob and the New Moon Trailer….Otherwise I had no interest what so ever to watch.
Not surprised, and yes, Rob and the cast were the only reason I watched. Had they not been up for an award, I would have been in bed by 9!!

I only watched it because of the New Moon trailer, but then with all of the excitement with the awards Twilight was winning, and seeing Robert Pattinson, I watched the whole thing, just in case i missed something. Twilight fans have to keep up or they lose so much. Twilight is everywhere and you cant miss even a little bit of the excitement or you feel lost. I love Edwardd Cullen. Not Robert Pattinson, but I thank him for doing the Edward part because before him, we didnt have a clue what to picture Edward as, and now we do. Well, atleast i didnt, i mean, we were obsessed and all, but we hjad no real person to look up to or go on, you know? and now we do. so, yeah. Twilighterss ruleee.
