JUSTIN CHON SAYS ‘ECLIPSE’ IS DARKER AND SECURITY IS TIGHTER

Posted September 20th, 2009 By: Evie 14 Comments »

E! Online caught up with Justin Chon recently, and Justin talked about the direction David Slade is taking Eclipse and the improved security on set. Check out what Justin said below:

Get ready for darkness.

Twilight star Justin Chon tells me that director David Slade’s Eclipse isn’t exactly taking his lead from Catherine Hardwick or Chris Weitz.

“He’s done pretty dark films so that’s where I see [Eclipse] really gravitating towards—more of a dark kind of moody film,” Chon said yesterday at BAFTA’s pre-Emmy tea party. “Just shooting the scenes that I’m in, the mood is definitely different.”

“David is very set on how he wants this movie to be portrayed,” Chon said. “It’s a lot more refined and maybe not as loose as the last two—at least for us humans. I can only imagine what he’s doing with everyone else.”

“Security has been increased a lot,” Chon said. “They’re a lot more protective…If Rob was to go out in public without anybody, I think it could be pretty dangerous.”

Even so, Pattz is dealing with the attention well. “It takes him a lot more time to get in and out of places,” Chon said. “But he doesn’t get angry. He’s handling things great.”

Yea, we know we’re headed for dark; but the question is…how dark??

Sure this is a somewhat darker book, it’s also very romantic, it has so many pivitol story lines that mean so much to the outcome of the story.

I’m still GGGRRRing about MR’s fleshing out of Riley, expanding his role. If they leave out either of the 2 Edward’s bedroom scenes, or short cut the tent scene, just to show us Victoria and Riley kissy facing, I will be soooooo disappointed. That will make me cry more than anything left in the movie.

UT,OH there I go being negative again, sorry, but I’m worried about my favorite book. Mine and millions of others too!

I’m with Marianne. I’ve commented on Lexicon and E! about how worried I am about this whole darker tone thing. I know Slade has been shooting some of our favorite scenes (tent scene, the end meadow scene, etc.) but since every cast member so far has mentioned the darker tone, I’m really beginning to get nervous about where Slade is going with this. The pics of the newborns coming out of the water didn’t help – they are cool looking but shouldn’t they be gorgeous like other vampires? Not looking like gray corpses, which was incidentally how they looked in his last vampire movie.

M.R. didn’t help with her Riley comment, either. It always seems like her ideas of what the fans want don’t jibe with what the fans want! In New Moon, Chris W, Peter, Michael and Taylor all had to ask her to put stuff back in that she had taken out – and with Eclipse it has already been mentioned that Royce wasn’t in the original script and David wrote it in. So, she may have read the books but she hasn’t got a CLUE what we all see in them! Please, if they ever do Breaking Dawn, let them get a new screenwriter.

i agree with Marianne. I don’t mind director’s taking a new spin on the Twilight Saga, just as long as they stay true to the books and don’t derail too far from the story. For example, in the New Moon Movie, that is coming out, in the trailer, there seem to be some scenes in the movie that wasn’t in the book, but looks good, and it looks like it hasn’t derailed from the movie that much. I am concerned about how dark the film is going to be, but i will reserve judgement until I see it. Even though, the tone in Eclipse is different from that and New Moon, It shouldn’t be super dark. Have any of you other Twilighters noticed that the cast,(even though they haven’t been filiming that long), has nothing really to say about the director? execpt for the fact that the movie is going to be darker and more action packed? which we all knew anyway. Marianne, you have been known to make some good points and sometimes, its like your reading my mind when you say certain things! so good job with that!

As I posted on the MR news blog, she’s a great writer… I like Slade… keep him… But MR needs to not elaborate if she wants to keep our confidence in her… I agree… her comments do not make me feel good about seeing this film at all!

I really hope he goes with the books… I mean from the pictures ive seen the newborns look more like zombies coming out of the water…I’m kinda worried that this movie isn’t going to be like the book at all…we already know David Slade doesn’t like the twilight series…(you can apologize all you want but it doesn’t change the fact that you said it, or that you thought it.) and i understand that directors need to tweak books to make them into movies… but from everything I’ve seen and heard it doesn’t sound at all how i envisioned it.

  • Bellahlaha

Yeah Rob has to be careful, we dont want another crazy taxi incident do we…hope eclipse will be good.

  • Amber

Ok I agree with what everyone else has said, this whole darker thing is just not cool! The newborn’s are not beautiful vampires they look like his freak vampires from 30 days of night and that is NOT ok!!!!!!!! I am really starting to worry about how true he is going to be to the book, I really wish Chris Weitz was directing this =(! Fingers crossed! If he screws up he is going to have thousands of screaming fan girls after him!

    Thanks Aretha.

It seems that we are all pretty much like minded on here, Chris, Chelle and Twi-Mom Australia all seem to be in my head too.

It’s nice to know that there is someone else out there that thinks like you do. Company in our addiction.
We all know these books and the story so well, probably because we’ve read them countless times, so when the powers that be make decisions that seem utterly ridiculous, or make no sense, we can’t help ourselves we have to defend that story and the actors portraying our favorite characters.

You also made some very good points, as do so many girls making comments on here. I really enjoy reading what others think and I find myself smiling and saying to myself “that’s exactly how I feel”.

Let’s hope Summit does read some of our very intelligent suggestions and constructive criticism.

  • Chelle

Ayayayay… I’ve been trying to stay positive about eclipse but its getting harder now. I understand the whole trying to appeal to male audiences but what happens if they turn off the main audience which ius the millions of fans already so emotionally invested in this story like us? I’m no pro statician but I would think the current success of twilight and the guaranteed pending success od NM should make the studio happy by now and give some security that we will be supporting these movies. But that support is driven by our love for the books, not the adaptation of DS or MR. So really ot should be that simple, put the book on film. And I have noticed too that none of the cast interviews have elaborated much on DS style, at least not up to par with the way they seemed to be about CW when filming NM. All we’ve heard so far is “darker” a hundred times. MR should read some fansites once in while and get a reality check.

  • spidermonkey

David Slade seems like a bad choice by Summit! What were they thinking?!

  • weni15

I agree with Marianne.Although I am trying very to keep my mouth shut until I see results from David Slade, I didn’t like how the newborn vampires looked. They’re very 30-Days-Of-Night-ish looking, and that is not how Stephenie describes her vampires.

Staying true to the book is essential..but I also think that somehow you have to STRAY away from the book a LITTLE TINY BIT just to make it more interesting..like what Chris did. He did put some action scenes in the Volturi scenes..BUT..I think it worked out.He didn’t make it IDK more of a “VAMPIRE-GUY-FLICK” by making it “DARKER” or making the vampires look……FUGLY.In his own right, he did it more interesting by adding more scenes..and I think..that CHRIS KNEW that he didn’t sign up for a “VAMPIRE-GUY-FLICK”

I dont want to compare…and also…the results hasn’t been out yet. We haven’t seen NM in full..and Eclipse is still shooting. So I only wish them Chris and David…LUCK!!!BUT I THINK THAT NM IS GOING TO BE FAB!!!!!

  • Lainie88

I am also way worried about David Slade. Those newborns did look like zombies and they are supposed to be beautiful. I HATE ZOMBIES. Seriously…this is not 30 days

  • Betty

Not only do I think the look of the newborns is totally wrong, I am also disturbed about the changes Slade is making in the portrayal of the humans. They were so believable in Twilight and it was so easy to identify with them. I sincerely hope Stephanie Meyer will step in and prevent Slade from turning Eclipse into a horror film, ignoring the beautiful themes of the book.

  • Steff

I cant really say what i think about it yet!!! New Moon in not even out yet and eclipse is still filming so we cant really know what is going to happen!!! although i do think if they made it abit darker and more action packed more people will go to see it!!! (like guys) you can have romance in a film and still have some action in it!!!
