Girl Power Powers Twilight to $70.6 Mil Weekend

Now that’s buying power.

A female-dominated audience drove Twilight’s opening weekend to among the biggest in Hollywood history: a $70.6 million Friday-Sunday gross, per studio estimate.

“This is a game-changer. This is an industry-changing performance,” Exhibitor Relations analyst Jeff Bock said today. “…With the success of Sex and the City, and Mamma Mia!, we’ve awoken a sleeping giant at the box office.”

Exit polling showed 75 percent of Twilight’s audience was female. Box-office stats show the movie is the biggest opener for a movie directed by a woman (Catherine Hardwicke).

MarketWatch also has some great new statistics about the movie that they’ve just released:

– Fandango’s percentage of Twilight ticket sales ranks #2 among the company’s largest share of a feature film’s opening weekend box office. Only Fandango’s 16% of Sex and the City’s opening weekend was higher.

– Twilight is #3 on the list of Fandango’s top advance ticket-sellers. (Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and The Dark Knight are the only films to sell more tickets in advance.)

– As of Sunday morning 9:00 a.m. PT, 63% of Twilight moviegoers plan to see it again, indicating that the film will enjoy repeat viewings, according to an ongoing Fandango.com poll.

“The Internet marketing campaign behind Twilight was one of the most extensive and successful we’ve experienced,” says Rick Butler, Chief Operating Officer for Fandango. “It’s clear that the studio wanted to embrace the novel’s loyal fans, whose passion translated to ticket sales. It’s refreshing to see an independent film generate the same kind of box office as a big studio blockbuster.”

Wow! Catherine must be really proud. I’m sure they’re all very proud of the box office numbers. I know I am. Girls rule. Are you surprised that 75% of this weekend’s movie goers were female? At this rate, how much do you think the Twilight movie will make when it’s all said and done? Do you think it will make much more than $150 million total?

Well, I am doing my part to make that happen! I saw it twice in LA (I came to see it to my friend that turned me to the books, my maker LOL) and I am seeing it again this weekend with my San Francisco coven.

NOW, on another note… what is up with the this hoax thing, (it better be) that Rob is dead??? Please somebody tell me it is not true!

  • Erica

unbearable, that is totally untrue.. don’t believe anything you hear about rob being dead.. this has been going on for days and he’s been on tv and all so don’t listen to it!

anywho, thats a great opening weekend! YAY FOR TWILIGHT! i’ve seen it twice so far and i’m taking my little brother tonight to see it! i’m not surprised that 75% of the viewers were females but all i know that 2 out of 3 times i’ve seen this movie, its been with a guy lol

I went to opening night here (Thursday at 10) and i think someone said there were maybe 8 guys in the theatre. When I went Friday night in a much larger theatre, someone had counted and there were 25 men, so it surprised me that the article mentioned only 75% of the audience was female. I would have thought it would be a much higher percentage.

There was so much estrogen in the air that you could almost smell it.

YAY, I’m so glad the movie is doing so well. I dragged my husband out for a midnight showing Thursday night and he even enjoyed it. I’m so looking forward to finding out the release date for new moon!

I think that it will easily make the 150 million within the next two weeks, especially because today (Sunday’s) grosses are not factored in here. With the holiday weekend coming up there should be a lot more revenue as well. Even if the audience were to taper off next weekend (mostly likely due to the holiday shopping season and a poor economy), there’s still overseas. I’m gonna guess the overall gross will be between 450-500 mil. It doesn’t surprise me that most of the viewers are female, but it’s a shame more males aren’t getting into it. Oh and Go Catherine! I hope she’s celebrating tonight.

On my second viewing of the movie, I saw A LOT more guyz in the theater (a whole group came together). I was upset though that some of the fangirls couldn’t keep it together. It ruined some great moments in the movie. I had a friend that went to one of the midnight showings and had the movie experience completely ruined because of the screaming. A group of us are getting together over the holiday and add some more $$ to that $70.6 million. And yes, I do believe we will go over $150 million when it is all said and done.

This is very cool. The highest gross ever for a woman director! While I’m very happy with the box office take, I wished we had beaten Harry Potter. But, oh well. Twilight is obviously a girl thing, and that’s great. Don’t think many guys will come on board until New Moon. Maybe the more vampires (the Volturi) and werewolves aspect will help with that and definitely need better special effects!

Think about it. If the movie only opened Friday, technically Thursday at midnight, and it’s made this much in the US alone, imagine what the rest of the world will bring in. $150 mil doesnt seem so far fetched after all. I can tell you the pressure that was lifted from me after hearing New Moon was being green lighted was comical. I actually Squeed FOR A HALF AN HOUR! GO CATHRINE, you rock girl!!!! Id love an interview from the cast now that the numbers are pooring in.

Well then hell yes to girl power baby!!!Though I think at the end of the box office closure and when the movie cinemas stop playing Twilight
it will have done at least like $220 million or so in the total roundup,a $150 million is simply the money ticket sales it’ll do in it’s first days or weeks of release, though I am a tad bit sad because I was hoping that this will be the biggest phenomena ever and that it will be making more money than it is now(like a billion dollars in total let’s say)Oh well at least New Moon is coming along the way.
Hmmm…Wonder who will they be casting as the Volturi actors, now that will make one hell of a blog, might as well start feeling inspired to do one.Ben Barnes for Demetri anyone?Lol!!!
    Twilight rocks!!!

This does not surprise me at all! I’m so glad I helped to make this happen by seeing every day! :]

I am psyched!!!! I’m not surprised that it made that much. A theater in the town I worked in was sold out from Thursday night to Tuesday night when I checked on Wednesday. I’m actually quite pleased that 25% of the audience was men, it’s more than I expected it to be overall. There were quite a few guys at the theater I was at though… I saw them coming in in small groups, and several were with what appeared to be dates. I also had to laugh at all the teens and tweens during the movie, although they didn’t scream which would have really upset me, there were collective ahhh’s and ohhh’s, which was a little comical. I went to Chicago for the Breaking Dawn concert, and that was insane. I even took both of my boys to see the movie on Saturday (they’ve heard the audiobook in our jeep enough to know what’s going on), and they both thoroughly enjoyed it and they’re 9 and 13. One friend that went with us on Thursday night hadn’t even read the books yet, and I caught her and her 16yr old son in at Barnes & Noble on Saturday buying the books. I plan on seeing it at least one more time in the theaters, so I don’t think the $150 million is going to be a problem at all, I’m sure it will be surpassed. I even think that the male audience will increase, because I know of several guys that have commented that it looked interesting from the trailers, and my brother and some friends of his at work were even talking about it, and a group of guys that he works with was planning on going to see the movie this weekend. I think the movie is just a door opener for a larger audience base, and subsequent movies will do that much better, as well as spur other to read the books… Look what the first Harry Potter movie did for that franchise, I didn’t start reading those books until after my children and I saw the movie on DVD. Go girls, and women in my case, congratulations cast, and Catherine, and Stephenie and Melissa!!!!

I thought the movie was incredibly disappointing. People laughed out loud in several areas of the film from the incredibly poor acting and direction. I certainly hope the second film will have a higher budget, more acting classes and a new director, cinematographer and special effects unit. Compared to the first Harry Potter movie I though this was a C-.
