‘ECLIPSE’ FILMING UPDATE: BLACK IS THE NEW SILVER

Posted September 23rd, 2009 By: Evie 69 Comments »

We have a new update for you from the Eclipse set today. The Vancouver Sun and Twilight Gossip spotted Rob Pattinson and Kristen Stewart as Edward and Bella driving around in Edward’s Volvo.

Rob Pattinson and Kristen Stewart as Edward and Bella:

On set with crew:

(Thanks Hugz!)

I love seeing just little things like this picture and trying to figure out which scene it’s coming from. It’s great to see a scene that is just one with Edward and Bella. I’m getting over the fact that the car isn’t silver, there are much bigger things in the story.

Do you like the car pictures? How do you feel about the car color change?

who cares what color the car is. lets just hope the movie is well put together and that the tent scene isnt screwed up.

  • glo

I don’t think that black should be the new silver. Edward’s volvo is silver and it should be that way, I don’t particularly like that they would change the color, especially to black. One of the things they avoided in the first movie (and the books) was the color black when it came to the Cullens’ in any regard whether it was clothes, cars or whatever. This was another way to differentiate them from regular vampires and have them fit in with humans. I find the car color departure to black unacceptable, if they just changed the style of car I would just write it off as Edward getting a new car because he’s into cars, but the color is another matter completely and most fans WILL notice. I just hope the car pictured is borrowed or stolen from someone else and not his regular car.

    Great photo’s by the way.

  • glo

Deanna, I agree with your statement too. But it concerns me when they start changing small things, that it just doesn’t end there. Many times, it is generally just the beginning and snowballs into the director wanting to make the movie depart more from the book then it should or worse yet, add more to scenes than necessary or give insignificant characters more of a story line or development which takes away from the main characters that we’d all rather see be developed. I hope not, but it makes me wonder.

  • TaliMoo

I don’t mind if the color was changed in the first two movies but since it was changed for this one [as far as I know] it kind of ruins the consistancy of the movies.

I want to see these movies look like they trailed off each other even though they have different directors.

The car style looks totally different too.

  • Addicted to Edward

    Amen Deanna.

Better get used to the black car now…it’s in New Moon too.

  • Twilight Mom Australia

Hummm…black Volvo… no Edward’s Volvo is silver, on one hand I am thinking the color is minor detail yes..
    BUT
on the other hand I am thinking, Why change the color??? What would be the point of changing
the color of Edwards Volvo??? What about continuity???
It needs to be explained in the Movie itself or beforehand. We need to know.
Everybody is saying David Slade is making Eclipse “darker” silver to black,” darker”…don’t know about any of you guys but I am starting to get a wee bit worried about David nobody is really saying that much yet, but most are saying “David is “putting his own spin” on Eclipse…. I am saying NO David stay true to the book..If Stephenie has not been to the set yet I think she should, this is still her baby and she should also have a say how far David can go and not lose her story, her love story about Edward and Bella.
Edward and Bella in a SILVER Volvo!!!!!!!

    Hummm…..???

  • megan

i wanna know if they will put a future kind of flash back with bella picturing it all with jacob and the two kids that would really cool.

  • Tia

I DON’T LIKE IT. I noticed that it was black in NEW MOON as well. I don’t care how rich the Cullens are that MAYBE Edward got a new Volvo. It’s bad enough they changed the model of the car, now they’re changing the color! The book called for it to be silver and the first movie had it silver, therefore KEEP IT SILVER!!!!! Now if they wanted to let Edward’s Astin Martin Vanqusih to be black (which I think it is anyway in the book) then fine.

  • Larissa

I don’t see the change in the color of his car a big deal. I mean if people get worked up over that it’s like people being upset that Bella had a laptop in the movie. It’s not going to change the outcome or whatnot. I would prefer that it’s a different color rather than a different car.

  • burtonbabe

How hard is it to keep some details consistent. And the cars aren’t just small details, the Silver volvo is mentioned consistently throughout all of the books. From the pics we have seen, it seems like Edward’s is the only one that been changed, why mess with something was good. But from the new extended trailer, unfortunately, it looks like the black volvo is also in New Moon. I agree with glo, I’m not into all the black clothes either. and on the topic of of clothes, what’s up with Edward’s suits? I sure hope that’s something they don’t cary over into Eclipse. Twilight got the wardrobe right!

  • http://twilightersanonymous suresure

I guess the color isn’t really a big deal but for some reason it makes me uneasy. Why change the color in th first place, makes me scared about what else Slade thought needed to be changed.

  • Pauline

I do not think the black car is a good idea. In the book, every time Stephenie Meyer refered to the car, it was not just volovo, it was shiny SILVER volvo. Now its shiny black volov, but just in one of the movies? Thats rediculus! Even though David Slade is going for a darker side to this movie, it does not mean he has to make everything darker! Also, if they changed the color of the car, that means that they are not going to close to the book, so they are changing a lot of other stuff too. That is so stupid!

  • UM.. yeaaaahh

Seriously… what next, his HAIR? Oh it’s not that big a deal.. Edward is still Edward. NO EDWARD DOESN’T HAVE A BLACK CAR.. OR black hair.. oh but all hell would freeze over then. haha, What the heck.

  • Nicole

I hate when they do stupid crap like this. First off the color of his car is something that is mentioned through out every freaking book. Why do you have to make such a stupid change. Who is it benefiting? I love how these directors always talk about sticking with the integrety of the books and then they do crap like this. I’m such a pureist when it comes to stuff like this and it drives me crazy. The rest of the movie better be good. So far from the pics I have seen, I’m a little afraid.

  • Lily

lmao Kristen looks soo happy in the first one.

  • http://twilightersanonymous Marianne

If a color change in the car is the worse thing DS does to Eclipse I will be thrilled. I guess Edward bought a new car, which I guess is not out of character for him. Just don’t change the romantic parts from the book and I’ll be okay.
See Chelle, I’m still trying to keep faith.

  • texxie

I am in 100% agreement with “glo”. Dead on explanation btw. For the life of me I can’t figure out why the color change was a must. I mean why????? anyone read/heard? This fan will indeed notice and honestly, it’s going to be distracting. I would just assume not see the outside of the car period. Interior shots only. Details matter to me.

    Thanks for the shots btw

  • Midori

Well, I like the car, but they should of left it silver as in the story. They couldn’t get another silver Volvo? They original car was given away at the Tyra Banks Show. It was exciting to see the girl win Edward’s car. Rob Pattinson actually delivered the keys to the girls hand. He was so happy for her! The car is beautiful and is a step up, but should of remained silver.

  • Rae

I think this scene is probably when they are getting to school and Jacob is waiting for them in the parking lot, ’cause look how Kristen’s hand is over her face like shes upset and Rob looks kinda pissed off.

  • PrincessJen

I’m not getting over the fact that the car is black and not silver. This is a deviation from the books, the first movie and all that’s sacred in the world of Twilight. A definite stike against David Spade for going along with it; he should know better than to mess with something like this.

  • http://jaward-girl96 Monique

I don’t like it. The volvo was silver in the first movie, I’m not sure if it will be in the second movie, it should be in the third one. It is the SILVER volvo. It is Edward’s signiture car and it is important.

  • Ack

Ok changing the color of the Volvo from silver to black is not that big a deal, worse things could happen, and its not like they haven’t already changed stuff for New Moon. Also if you watch the New Moon trailer the Volvo is black in there, so it was >NOT

  • Erenn

As Addicted to Edward pointed out, the Black Volvo is in New Moon too, so don’t just blame David Slade. It’s even in the latest preview…. I’m over the fact that it’s not Silver… like someone else mentioned, if that’s the worst they could do, change the color of the car, then I’m fine with it… I know the car is mentioned throughout, but it doesn’t make the story any moreso than the fact Jacob is wearing cutoff jeans vice the cutoff sweats that are mentioned in the books… I just want to see New Moon already and count my days down for the theater release of Eclipse! Bring it on already!

  • Ack

My post got cut off a little bit, but it was NOT David Slade who changed the color, it was Chris Weitz. So much David Slade bashing, lets just wait and see how the movie turns out.

  • Chelle

Marianne I can’t blame you for being worried this is after all your favorite book in the series along with others. I’d be scrutinizing it too. Not sure why they couldn’t paint the car I mean its hollywood they can do such things or maybe they can edit the color during post production and make it silver. Its a minor detail compared to. Other things but he is the “stupid silver volvo owner” after all I guess he’s the black volvo owner now heheh. But its really not something other audience would know unless you read the book and I doubt Bella would call him the silver volvo owner as one of her dialogues in the movie. So funny how the car is such a character in itself just like the porsche!

  • CB

I don’t think they should of changed it, it’s those small details from first book that follows through to the last.. it’s a shame and no reason really!

  • Chelle

Oh wait, it’s supposed to be “stupid shiny volvo owner” so maybe it shouldn’t be a big deal it’s black lol… as long as it’s shiny =)

  • Sabine

    Hey guys!
When I saw the pictures first I was disappointed, too. Edwards Volvo IS silver. But then I thought about the trailer where we can see how Bella sees the Volvo with Edward disappear. Probably this is part of one of her dreams and the black car has a meaning? I actually hope that…

  • Katelyn-Ann

Must just be a selling point for Volvo, they see how popular the Twilight saga is and they want to sell their cars. Make Edward drive a new version of their car and watch the sales go up. My opinion anyways…

  • http://twilightersanonymous Marianne

Okay, again I can’t help myself…..maybe be there will be a plausible explanation in New Moon as to why Edward has a black car now, like Bella smashed into the silver one with her big hefty red truck and he had to get a new one, sorry for being silly.
I know we all hate when little changes are made that don’t seem to make sense.
Chelle made a good point as to why didn’t they just paint the thing if the color was not available anymore, or change the color by computer on the film???? It is Hollywood isn’t it, they can make the Jake and the other guys fursplode into wolves, you would think they could paint a car.
Anyway, as I said above, if that is all there is to complain about for Eclipse, I will be thrilled beyond belief.
Just bring on the kisses and great romantic scenes we expect and I’ll as happy as any twi- hard could be!!!!

  • kirsten

My first thought upon seeing those photos was that Edward gave Bella a pre-wedding (pre-change) car that was basically a black tank, so I figure that was what this car was. Not that they had changed Edward’s car. As for Edward driving, I remember Bella had trouble controlling her new car so I figured Edward’s taking her on a test drive.

Personally, I’ll be happy as long as they get the sleepovers at Edward’s house and the tent scenes right.

  • Saywer

I’m not sure how I feel about the change in the long run there are other things they could really mess up about these books so maybe we should just be happy it still a volvo. As for who changed it guys-we can blame the directors! With the success of the first movie I’m sure volvo is probably paying the studio, because now its great product placement and advertising. The director has some creative control-but in the end he has to do whatever the studio and producers tell him to do…I totally agree that there is no reason to change the color-its annoying but lets hope that all that bothers us about the movies to come :)

  • Brittany

I think its just a car. I mean, yes Edward’s car is silver through all the books. But maybe, Edward got a new car. I mean, Alice gets a porche like it’s something small. You know they have to be rich. They never wear the same thing more then once. So, maybe the new director is showing that. Idk, I’m not going to set here and be like omg! why?! Over the volvo. Like someone said up there just be thankful that they didn’t change the cars model or maker. I really like the new black. And the style of the car is awesome! I’d drive it lol! Just think guys, if it was something to big that shouldn’t be changed Stephanie wouldn’t let it happen. You know she’s there everyday watching them film this. So, lets just all relax and just enjoy what we get to see now and count down the days like it’s christmas till we get to see New Moon and Eclipse.

  • Heather

I’m not thrilled with the whole color/car change either, though I can deal with it as long as EVERYTHING else is close to the book.
To me Edward in an SUV just isn’t sexy, now Edward in the little silver & fast sporty car from the 1st movie was hot!
    Ugh – SUV=old man……
If they had to change it why couldn’t they do a silver 4-door sedan that at least is what I envisioned while reading the books.

  • Oretha

I don’t think the change in car is that big of deal. I think the wholecreative vibe that its stilla volvo is good. I think they are doing the best they have with what they got. As long as thecharcter remain the same and the story keeps the basic same tone than I think we are in business.I guess I am the eternal optimist

  • Hailey

OK The car is Silver in TWILIGHT. THE CAR IS BLACK WITH ANOTHER STYLE IN New Moon, Eclipse and possibly Breaking Dawn. What’s the BIG DEAL?
Let’s just WAIT for them to tell us what was on THEIR mind when they changed something as stupid as the car color.
I DON’T LIKE THE CHANGE, but I won’t make a BIG DEAL out of it. There are better things to worry and wonder about.

  • Tali

It’s not even the same car. The one from the first movie was a 2 door C-30 Volvo. This one is not. When making the movie someone should have spoken out. All of the events happend in a short periot of time. Bella came the the school at the the beggining or middle of the second semester of her Junior year. Eclipse takes place at the end of ther Senior year. And most of her Senior year Edward was no where to be found. I deffenetly think the directors for all of these movies keep an eye out for details of the story. Is bad enough that in the first movie when Edward was playing the piano he wasn’t shinning since the sun was on his hand. And now they change the car. Attention to detail people.

  • Nicole Loves Edward

In the New Moon trailer, EDWARD’S Volvo is black also. I don’t like them changing this subtle fact, but it isn’t a main element. I just hope they keep Eclipse as similar to the book as they can. The books are what people like, so why mess with something that’s already good?

  • carmen

i agree with larissa. its just the color. and the make. and im sure stephanie has been to the set already. and if shes ok with it then i dont think we as fans should stress and complain about it. cause the more we complain the more they might change, and then the worse it may get. plus it’s not like the books are centered around edwards car. i kinda like the black better on this model anyway. and if you think about it, it fits the mood of new moon and eclipse. and let me remind everyone. in twilight, emmetts jeep was TOTALLY different than what stephanie had described it and no one got overly upset over that. yeah it’s just emmett but, it wasnt a big deal. i mean its just a car. i know im not going to let a simple change like that ruin the whole movie for me. i grew accustomed to all the minor changes in twilight. everyone knows that a movie is not going to be exactly like the book. its just a minor change. look at all the other great scenes that we have saw. like the visions of edward, the cliff dive, the wolves, and all the other stuff. who knows? stephanie may actually like the idea of a black volvo. im just saying i dont think we should get overly upset over something like this. theres more important things to worry about, like the tent scene and etc. thats all im saying.

  • Chelle

Ok so its safe to assume Volvo is paying some good money for using their car so would it be possible that they didn’t paint/change it to silver bec this paricular model doesn’t come in silver? If they change the color would that be considered false advertisement? Gosh such a mystery this has created. It personally doesn’t bother me too much so long as the storyline is close to the book. I can’t even believe I’ve spent my aftenoon pondering over this LOL

  • http://twilightersanonymous Marianne

    Ha,Ha Ditto Chelle.
So much worse can happen or br left out.

  • amanda kay

hmmm…not sure i like the fact that it’s black…in all the books the car is silver…so dont know how i feel about that…i mean as long as the car is still a volvo i think that’s all that is really important i guess.

  • Inga

Yeah the car being black irks me too. It would have been much lesser of a deal if it had been black in Twilight too but now a new model of Volvo and it’s black to boot…wtf? I want to hear why Chris Weitz or whoever is in charge of these things signed off on this!

  • Lizzie

I dont know if anyone else saw the article a few weeks ago that said the real reason the studio gave for the car now being black. It is that volvo no longer makes the car Edward drove in the books (and in the first movie) in the color silver. So they switched cars. I think people need to stop being so nitpicky. So the car is different…what can we do about it? The car is black in new moon too, which is already been finished, Eclise is being filmed…if you cant change it, why focus so much energy on it?

  • Debbie

I care what color the car is. Leave it the color it was in the book. Simple details they keep changing. And it does make a difference.

  • abby

Even in the first movie the car is silver but it is supposed to be a volvo c60R, which is really fast.
And Jacob’s Rabbit is supposed to be red not dark green. Just sayin’

  • abby

    woops i meant a volvo S60r, not c60r.

  • KCloud

Okay now I know there are entertainment liberties when adapting a book to a movie, but still seriously keeping the volvo is one the simplest things to do. Generally fans are a little but critical when things don’t follow exactly to the book but we understand that. But keeping a car silver is not that hard to follow and something that will erk fans more than the other stuff because it is so simple to follow. It’s just so annoying that I usually don’t enjoy or like that movie the first time because I’m picking it apart, and Eclipse is my favorite out of the series so I am even more anal about the facts.

  • emmy

AMEN to Twimom Australia! It is a little detail but…
Yeah, continuity. And not to mention the phrase “Stupid Shiny Volvo Owner”! Do you think David Slade had even heard of it? Or heard the hype about silver Volvos since Twilight?! Why, why!

  • Twilight Mom Australia

    Question:

Has anyone notiched the Number Plate?

I just saw the Silver Volvo on page 94 in The Complete Illustrated Movie Companion.Twilight
Is the number plate the same 57F 6D3?

  • Sandi

Well… as long as they don’t change anything major I’m ok with it. Yes I would prefer them to keep everything as close to the books as possible… but car color? Meh… not THAT important. But when they start changing really big things I will have something more to say!

  • http://twilightersanonymous Marianne

Twi-Mom Australia: I’m sure I read somewhere along the way that the plate numbers were the same as those in Twilight and New Moon. Twilight Lexicon was in touch with Summit about this color change and I believe it was mentioned the plate #’s were the same.
It’s funny that something that is so simple as to maintaining the same color of something, for some reason they felt a change was in order.
There must be a pertinent behind the scenes reason and we are not in the loop.

  • Haldirah

Hey girls…maybe the world has come to an end and they just quit making Volvos in Shiny Silver? I really don’t think so. The color is a must but I do like the new model.

  • PryerBeann

but… the… ome… the… *flabbergasted* its his “shiny silver volvo”. hes a “stupid SHINY SILVER volvo owner”. how?? why?? not good =( xx

  • katie

WHY change the color of the volvo after 2 movies?! what the heck! how hard is it to just KEEP THE SAME CAR?! this one is uglier too i think. UGHHH i hate when movies change things that should and could be kept the same easily.

  • kell.bell88

I don’t like that they changed the color. Model, ok I get it. But color??? It’s mentioned in all the books what color it is.
I do like however that they have a WA state license plate on it. At least they’re trying in some areas.

  • Bella

i dont like that they changed it but maby its not edwards car. i dont really care aslong as they dont mess up the proposle scene an the tent scene

  • jenb

I don’t like the change. I don’t know why it happened or who made the decision to change the color from silver to black, but I don’t like it. It’s one of those small details that I wish they hadn’t changed.

  • LeslieGrace

I don’t mind the change but I think it was dumb to change it! I think it takes things out of perspective alittle! I mean why change a good thing right?! ***And I first noticed the color change in the Extended MTV trailer for NEW MOON! When Edward and his BLACK VOLVO are in the parking lot for a brief moment before disappearing! Did anyone else notice this???

  • shonla

I could care less what color the car is! I just want a movie that is as awesome as the book! I like this Volvo much better than the one in Twilight and it looks nice in black! I don’t understand why it’s not silver but whatever…..

  • Chocolate

Edward’s Volvo is silver. Not black. That’s all I have to say.
OK, this is a little off topic… I think Tom Felton would have been the PERFECT Riley. For anyone who doesn’t know who Tom Felton is, he plays Draco in the HP movies.

  • Amanda

That is completly stupid. His car is silver how hard is that for these idiots to get.Silver is not a rare color .Heck paint that car silver.Dumb as.es.

  • Kelly

I cant believe they changed the car colour! Its like, in every single book, its like “Edwards silver volvo”. Not edwards black volvo. And wasnt his car in Twilight not even a volvo? Disappointing.

  • http://www.fanfiction.net/~erilu77 Erilu77

I don’t think the color of the car is a “minor detail” AT ALL..

say we said the golden eyes of the Cullens wasn’t as important… ok, maybe this one example is a lot… but let’s say… Bells’s relic of a truck was a newer model or maybe not red… it’s THE SAME THING!!

It IS!! and so is the “shiny SILVER Volvo”!!

  • Sheila

Isn’t the car Black since new moon? why is it such a shock that its black in eclipes? since the new moon trailer you could see the volvo was black. but it doesn’t really matter. i actually like it better.

  • Amy

What was the point of Stephenie Meyer writing down ‘silver, shiny volvo’ if it’s gonna be black?
Details, people! Sorry, but I think it’s a big point.
But… since the model’s different too… I guess we Twilight fans can just say its new… or stolen.

  • octavia

i really dont understand why they had to change the car color in new moon in the first place…it’s hard filming the sequels to a saga with three different directors, so they should try really hard to go for consistancy!!! i’m a TWI-HARD, I WANT TO SEE MY VAMPIRES DONE SOME JUSTICE!!!

  • http://twilightersanonymous.com/eclipse-filming-update-black-is-the-new-silver.html#respond aLiCe Xx love true Blood.

I really dont see why they even had to change the car colour?!
    Does anybody know why?
It just seems pointless and down right stupid/silly to me.
The Idea was that, Carlisle’s car was Black, and, Edward’s was silver
    have they forgotten that…?
Even if it was black in new moon, i still dont get at all, WHY?
    tehehheheheee…

If anyone wants to see something that is, EVEN BETTER THAN TWILIGHT…
watch the T.V show, TRUE BLOOD.
tis awesomness, i am newly obsessed. ;)

    XxXxXx

  • x6pointstar66x

I agree with glo as well, They should stick to the smaller details just as much as they would (hopefully) to the larger ones. And I guess that we all could think of it as new… or stolen(lol) however… I dont belive that they ever mentioned that in the books either. Another small detail that I noticed was that Bellas bike, in the trailer, is silver… Ummm hello. Isnt it suppost to be red???? DETAILS… UGH Hopefully they get the rest of the movie right.
