ET ONLINE: DREW BARRYMORE CONFIRMS BEING CONSIDERED FOR ‘ECLIPSE’ DIRECTOR

Posted March 9th, 2009 By: Team Switzerland 13 Comments »

We’ve heard from Twilight star Kellan Lutz about the director rumors surrounding the third Twilight film ‘Eclipse’, and now Drew Barrymore herself has confirmed that she is, in fact, being considered to direct the movie.

Drew Barrymore says she is excited about the possiblity of joining the hugely popular ‘Twilight’ franchise.

Barrymore, 34, confirmed in a recent interview that she’s being considered for ‘Eclipse,’ the third movie in the blockbuster vampire saga that began with ‘Twilight’ last year, the Associated Press reports. “I’m one of the directors that is being talked about, which is great, because I’m a director now,” Barrymore said. “But, you know, they’ll make their choice.”

Chris Weitz (‘The Golden Compass’) is directing ‘New Moon,’ the second film based on Stephenie Meyer’s best-selling series, after taking over the franchise from ‘Twilight’ director Catherine Hardwicke. ‘New Moon’ hits theaters this November, while ‘Eclipse’ is set for a summer 2010 release.

Barrymore made her feature directorial debut in the upcoming film ‘Whip It,’ which she also stars in along with Ellen Page, Jimmy Fallon and Juliette Lewis.

Edit: Please note that Summit has not confirmed Paul Weitz as the director of ‘Eclipse’. To view the article from Live-PR in which they report Paul has been signed, click here.

She’s been in the movie business all her life and has already directed one film, so she isn’t a newbie, but I still prefer the idea of Paul Weitz directing the third film. I think Drew Barrymore is a very unique and interesting candidate – I am curious to find out what made Summit pick her out of the crowd of directors.

Now that Drew has confirmed that she’s being considered, how do you feel about it? After hearing her enthusiasm, does that make you feel better about her possibly directing the movie?

Summit has already announced that Paul Weitz would be the director for Eclipse so I am not sure how this is news. I am a fan of hers but these movies need more experienced directors. There is alot going on with the books/movies and they need someone who is knows what they are doing. One movie doesn’t make you a director. Thats just a newbue, even though she has been around along time.

I agree completly Ronda. I remember reading this already. And Although Drew is very talented actress, I also believe Twilight Saga Movies needs more experienced directors.

  • AllisCullen

    I dunno.

I’m getting kinda tired of all this rumor crap.

I agree, I don’t understand why someone who has not a big experience of directing will be (maybe) Director of Eclipse. Personnaly, I prefer a director with more experiences, especially for a saga like Twilight. We, as fans or very interested watchers are expecting something that will not disappointed us. I will compare this saga with star wars – waouh -(wich I LOVE) : the director has to be a very smart, imaginative and expert in the art of filming ! I hope that summit entertainment will no make a mistake in choosing the director for Eclipse.

Oh man, I really wish it was going to be Paul Weitz. From the way it sounds, he’s not really in the running like we all thought he was. Chris sounds super intelligent and calculative and I think that’s what this film franchise needs to ensure the films stay as cheese-free as possible. I think they could really make something cool out of the franchise if they would stick with the Weitz brothers. They seem to have tons of knowledge and ability to make amazing movies. It would be awesome to have Chris direct New Moon, Paul direct Eclipse, and then perhaps tag team to direct Breaking Dawn. Dang.

AllisCullen: I’m with you, I too am tired of the rumor crap. Doesn’t Summit realize they will burn bridges if they don’t stop all of this ridiculous dribbling of information?

Drew as the director? I am SERIOUSLY depressed. This book has way too much to try out someone without the directing chops. Sigh.

  • Maddalena

Drew Barrimore is a good actress, but I cannot think of her as movie director. There are other names that come to my mind: Alex Proyas (remember The Crow? the one and only with Brandon Lee?), the Wackowski brothers, Guillermo del Toro, Alfonso Cuarón… They all brought to their movies the right balance between darkness, action and romance.
I really liked Chris Weitz’movies “About a Boy” and “American Dreamz”, and I’m pretty sure he will do a great job with “New Moon”.
    But Drew Barrimore? I don’t know…

To me Drew is a giggly comedienne who flashed her boobs to David Letterman on his show and married filthy weirdo, Tom Green, as a joke (?) I can’t take her seriously so I don’t want her to direct Eclipse at all. She’d probably try to seduce Robert and make out with Nikki. just kidding!

  • Mary

I agree with the majority and say that I like Drew as an actress, but it’s hard for me to imagine her directing something like this. Maybe (and that’s a BIG maybe) if she were more experienced in the area of directing I would consider it. Eclipse needs an experienced director. I think Guillermo del Toro or Alfonso Cuaron, as Maddalena mentioned, would do an excellent job.

Wow. Since Eclipse is my 2nd favorite book of the series (Twilight, of course, is first) and the one with the most action, I really hope Summit knows what they are doing. Then again, I am definitely not impressed with their decision to bring the movies out on top of each other, which doesn’t leave much time for filming, editing, etc. Its like they are purposely hobbling themselves.

  • Jesse

I love Drew. She is extremely talented. I think she would do wonderful. I say give her the job ASAP. ;)

  • Rosemarie

I think Drew would have been better for a book like Twilight, but not Eclipse. I’d like to check out her work, but I don’t feel like she’d be the right director for this type of movie that requires a lot of special effects and CGI. Isn’t that why they went with Chris Weitz in the first place??? I would hate to lose that. I do enjoy the idea of Paul Weitz doing Eclipse and then both Paul and Chris doing Breaking Dawn together. That would be kind of cool!

  • Rachael

I love Drew it would be wonderful if she was the director of Eclipse. I just find it odd that all the movies in the Twilight Sage have different Directors, Why?
