EW.COM: IS DREW BARRYMORE A CANDIDATE TO DIRECT ‘ECLIPSE’?

Posted February 26th, 2009 By: Team Switzerland 21 Comments »

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Summit Entertainment is currently looking to secure a director for the third film in the Twilight franchise, ‘Eclipse’. Among those they are talking to? Drew Barrymore. Read more below:

As Summit Entertainment looks to lock in a director for the third installment of the Twilight series, Eclipse, the company is talking to a select group of directors — including actress-turned-helmer Drew Barrymore, EW has learned. While this news may come as a surprise to some, Barrymore did just finish work on her directorial debut, Whip It! starring Ellen Page. Neither Summit nor Barrymore’s reps would comment for this story.

(Thanks to Esther from EW!)

While I like that they’re looking to secure a director now, Drew Barrymore seems a little bit random. However, I will reserve judgement until the director is chosen, and we see their work.

What do you think of this news? Do you think Drew would be a good choice, or do you think it would hurt the film to have her as the director?

ahhhhhh no…..she is a good actress however i havent seen any of her directed films…..so who knows??????????????

  • Michelle

Oh My Edward… I’d love her for the Directors slot… Her company Flower Films is amazing.

  • Marie

one, chris weitz still hasnt even started the SECOND one, and already they’re looking for his replacement?? makes no sense!

secondly, i think this should be added to the list of ridiculous until proven rumors.

i have nothing against her or anything, but i think things are just moving a bit to fast, or getting a bit out of hand!

  • TexasVampire

As much as I enjoy watching Drew’s movies but I can’t picture her behind the camera..at all! How can she think she can direct this film this caliber with so much high expectations riding on it. She is better off doing indies until she build a solid repuation as a good director and to have public confidence in her work behind the camera. If Summitt is wise, they should not pick Ms Barrymore for this. Sorry, Drew! Stick with your day job as an actress!

  • kelly

WHAT?? Drew Barrymore a produce for ECLIPSE??? I honestly didn’t even know she directed at all,Not to sure how I feel about that??

  • Vivi

    @TexasVampire….

Let’s not forget that Eclipse will be considered an indie film. It is being produced by an independent film company for a very small indie sized budget. The Twilght Saga movies might be big hits at the box office, but they are indie films at heart!

  • Han

i think she would be awesome.. i love her!!

  • twilightmama

Marie: it was announced that due to the filming and editing of New Moon, Chris Weitz wouldn’t be able to direct Eclipse (the schedule won’t allow for it). That is why they are looking for a different director for Eclipse.

I personally think once one director starts they can do whatever the heck they want…they can film extra long, they can edit extra long, they can spend more than the stupid (low low low) budget Summit is thinking they can use because: Hellllooo!? Bottom line? ALL of the films will be just as successful as the first. I don’t know who is in charge of the ‘bottom line’ at Summit but I can say this: as a biz owner? They suck.

Drew is an amazing human being. She is ridiculously intelligent. She has been in the industry her entire life. She has a successful production company (are any of you aware she was the one who greenlit the Charlie’s Angels films?). I would LOVE to see her direct one of these.

I think Summit is being lame by expecting so much so close together at the excuse that the cast members can’t age. It’s called make up and less close ups, guys.

I hope Weitz will do well but I admit I find him as trivial as I found Catherine Hardwicke. I can only hope someone tells the actors to stop overacting.

  • Inga

I’ve been a fan of Drew’s for years, she’s so amazing:) I can def see her working with the young cast and bringing out the best in them but I’m not so sure on the special effects side. We shall see…

  • TexasVampire

    @Viv

You stand corrected on Summitt as an indie company. But when Twilight had become a monster franchise, it suddenly lost its indie appeal. As a “starving” indie company, they struck gold with the franchise. It is always about money. Besides that Twilight was never an indie to begin with.

I still really hope Drew doesn’t do this film. How can anybody take her seriously when she is just a goofy and silly actress. Never a dull nor serious moment with her.

  • Kacii

I think that this whole thing with twilight is getting out of hand. first its like attack of the disney stars, than they keep coming up with new additions to the things weve bought, it just has maybe a little extra thing, and now theyre getting actresses to maybe direct the film?

I dont think Drew would be a good director. Maybe i feel this way just because of all the B.S going around with the movies, but I think its getting a bit ridiculous.

UGH THIS IS SO FRUSTRATING >.

  • amber

Omg drew is an amazing director!!!!!!!!! GO DREW!!! I hope she does she wouln’t let it be on a cheap budjet or make it look cheap!

  • Midori

Drew Barrymore is a great actress, but I wasn’t aware that she is directing. She has been in the business her entire life, I can’t say it’s a good idea or not since I haven’t seen any of her directing work. However, Eclipse along with the other movies require special handling..CGI, etc. I know Summit is trying to get all the movie made before their cast ages, vampires don’t age. Kristen was 17 when she began filming Twilight, when it’s all finally made, she’ll probably be 21. Also Rob, he’ll be in his mid 20′s. When it’s all completed, Twilight would have taken a huge chunk of the casts lives.

  • SHAE

    I Love Drew!

She directed or produced and helped write NEver been kissed, Charlies angels 50 first dates and Music and lyrics.

She did really good with those.

She may be a good thing, though I really love and admire her and she is my FAVORITE actress, I dont kinow when it comes the movies anymore!

  • Wendy

I have always liked Drew and think she would be great! If you check her out on imdb.com there is a listing of the movies she’s produced.

  • Bella Swannabee

I love Drew!! She’d do great, but I don’t think she’s ever directed.
But my opinion is: bring back CATHERINE!!!!

  • jenb

I love Drew as an actress she’s done some of my favorite movies Never Been Kissed, Ever After, Music & Lyrics so I would be excited to see what she would bring to Eclipse (if she gets the job). I love the book & am excited to see it be brought to the big screen. Only thing I don’t like is than that would mean 3 different directors.

  • Sam

    I find this completely random.
I mean im not saying shes fully incapable
    to direct or anything.
But shes known for being an actress.
& it seems that she doesnt have much experience.
I really just want Catherine Hardwicke to come back
    and direct the third one!

  • lisa

I think Drew would be perfect for the Twilight series.
She is a cool, smart and artistic lady who knows all about the movie industry. She would do a terrific job, I hope this rumor is true.

  • Kelly E

umm… since when could she direct?
I think that she would be great, put her own personal spin on it. I think that she would get all the emotional parts right.
But I would still prefer someone a little more experienced – just to be sure.

    Sorry Drew.

  • makayla

hi i want to audition and be leah bye!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
