ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY STEPHENIE TALKS TWILIGHT & MORE

Posted November 6th, 2008 By: 88 Comments »

Entertainment Weekly has an in depth interview with Stephenie Meyer including some very HAPPY news. Read more below:

With her beloved book finally hitting the big screen, Twilight author Stephenie Meyer sat down with EW for an in-depth interview about the Rob Pattinson casting controversy, Breaking Dawn’s mixed reception, the deal with Edward and Bella’s big kiss, and what she’s working on next.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: First and foremost, what was it like seeing your story on the big screen?

STEPHENIE MEYER: I was terrified for days in advance before I saw Twilight for the first time. I was so worried that it was going to be horrible and break my heart. I’d seen things that were really good, but for all the time I’d spent on the set, I’d probably seen 10 minutes of the movie altogether. So I asked if it was okay if some of my friends watch with me because I have these great friends who are really positive and they love everything! I was really worried about it but we got in there and they put it on and I had my paper and my pen because it was a rough cut and I wanted to give feedback on things I felt needed to be changed. And I didn’t write a single thing down because I was so involved. The characters were speaking the way they should and the heart was there. I could have watched it all night in a loop if I could have.

Why did you demand that Edward and Bella’s big kissing scene be toned down?

The problem is if you’re going to continue with the other movies, there’s a very gradual build to their physical relationship. And what Edward is capable of when he first meets Bella changes very much by the time he’s become more committed to the relationship. They reshot the first kiss scene and actually added a special effect and some really cool things that added so much. And it’s the only kiss scene.

You also asked for some minor script changes and insisted on Kellan Lutz’s casting as Emmett. Did you always feel comfortable putting your foot down?

My personality is such that I have a really hard time being critical with other people. I can be critical of myself all day long. But I hate to step in and say, ”I really wish this was different.” But it’s been good for me just in general to have to speak up because I am so invested in this. I’ve forced myself, like with the Emmett situation, to take a step forward and say, ”I don’t like this.” And that’s hard for me, but I’m glad of every time I did it and I don’t think I stepped on too many toes and everyone seems to still like me.

What do you think of Rob Pattinson?

He’s a very mesmerizing person to be around. He’s got such a compelling personality. I don’t think you’d want him for a boyfriend. And you couldn’t just be his friend because he’s terribly sexy!

Were you worried when fans were outraged over his casting?

It broke my heart. Because I’ve had my tiny bit of celebrity, I’m aware of how hurtful those things can be. I apologized to him for ruining his life. He said his mom was sending him links like, ”Oh no, they called you a gargoyle!” They just raked him over the coals. The way he took it was a lot more positive than the way I would’ve handled it. He was like, ”I’m going to prove them wrong. I’m going to go out there and prove them wrong.” The movie hasn’t come out yet and he’s won over 99.9 percent of the people who didn’t approve of him as Edward. And when they see the movie, oh my gosh, there’s no way not to love him! It’s really too bad in some ways because Twilight is going to be limited by the fact that this is a vampire romance and it’s basically aimed at teens. If not for that, his performance in my opinion is Oscar-worthy.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Backing up, have you recovered from the very split, very passionate response to Breaking Dawn?

STEPHENIE MEYER: It’s been hard. The book did so much better than I thought it would. So many more people read it than I thought would. And then the negative reaction was so much more than I was expecting. Everything was more! I knew that that was coming because I had read all of the expectations people had: ”If this doesn’t happen in the end, I’m going to burn the book!” I already knew the story so that didn’t affect what happened, it just made me nervous for it to come out. But in the end I just had to say, ”This is the way this story goes.” It’s almost like history to me. This is what happened! You can’t mess with what happened. But I’ve been surprised at how hard it is to have people in some senses turn on you. That’s weird for me. But it was weird to have people like me too.

Have you moved on?

It just got to the point where it was ruining my life to read these hate-filled, poisonous things about me. It was kind of horrifying. I really did have to learn to distance myself. I’m too negative of a person naturally, so I don’t need any extra negativity. I’m not an optimist. One hundred people can tell you, ”Oh, I love this, it’s so great!” and one person can say, ”I hate this, you’re stupid.” And that’s the one I listen to because that’s who I am. [Laughing] So I have to be careful.

Despite the negativity, was there some happiness for you after Breaking Dawn was published?

I didn’t feel the sense of completion when I finished the book. I felt the sense of completion when it was out there and knowing that the end capped the story. It’s real when it’s published. The whole story was there. Finished. Stand alone. And it wasn’t whether anybody liked it besides me — I’d done it. I felt a sense of crossing the finishing line. So that was really positive.

When you returned home after a grueling tour for Breaking Dawn, you discovered that your unfinished manuscript for Midnight Sun had leaked onto the Internet, and you released a statement saying you were permanently shelving the story. Do you still feel the same?

The funny thing about that statement is I didn’t actually write the majority of it. I wrote about three single-spaced Word document pages of just real pain — with sort of a laugh on the end so everything was kind of tongue-in-cheek. And there were lawyerly people who thought it just wasn’t a good way to do it. I didn’t want to feel misrepresented in the letter and other people didn’t want me to be too emotionally vulnerable. So in the end only the one or two sentences written by me seem really jarring, and people didn’t get that there was sort of a joke in there. For example the part that’s me is where I said, ”If I wrote it now everybody would end up dying.” But that was a joke! And it sounded so serious amidst all the lawyer talk and I think my fans thought, Wow, she’s threatening to kill everyone! [Laughing] I felt kind of bad about that. I never felt any anger, actually. Just a lot of sadness. I mean it was a sucker punch — like someone came up behind you and just hammered you in the kidneys and you had no idea it was coming.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Is Midnight Sun still dead to you, or can you see finishing and publishing it in the future?

STEPHENIE MEYER: It’s really complicated, because everyone now is in the driver’s seat, where they can make judgment calls. ”Well, I think this should happen, I think she should do this.” I do not feel alone with the manuscript. And I cannot write when I don’t feel alone. So my goal is to go for, like, I don’t know, two years without ever hearing the words Midnight Sun. And once I’m pretty sure that everyone’s forgotten about it, I think I’ll be able to get to the place where I’m alone with it again. Then I’ll be able to sneak in and work on it again.

Do you have the energy to start working on a new book right now?

Actually, I think being able to write would be the best thing for me. I have two projects I want to work on. But the movie has been so time-consuming — all the publicity and the merchandise to approve. But I want to get in and write something totally different, a whole new world, and lose myself in that. I think that will be the most healing thing for me. So that’s my goal.

What stories are kicking around in your head?

I’m a little more hesitant to say what I’m working on, though, because people for some reason seem to take that as some kind of contract: ”You said you were working on this so now you have betrayed my trust by not doing it!” But I’m thinking I’m actually leaning towards the mermaids’ story right now. Years ago…I tried to write an epic poem. It was supposed to be, like, ”The Rime of the Ancient Mariner,” right? And I couldn’t make it work, it was horrible. But I loved the story in it. So that has become part of the back story to this one. Some of the characters are mermaids. Though, again, they’re not mermaids like you’ve known mermaids. They’re completely different. And I’m not going to use the word ”mermaid” in the book — they’re sirens.

After all the incredible highs and lows of the past year, do you feel tougher now?

I would say that I am much more fragile now than I was in the beginning of the year. I am not tougher. Nooooo. [Laughing] In a way, I’m really glad about that. As an author, you have to live in a glass house. If you have walls up, you can’t see the world around you to interpret it into your stories. And when people start throwing bricks at your glass, you can’t fill in the holes with cement. You just have to put more glass in and it’s just more delicate than it was before. Being vulnerable and fragile is kind of essential to being able to translate your emotions into a printed work. On the plus side of not being tougher, I don’t feel jaded. I don’t feel like I’ve lost my wonder at the good things or my horror at the bad. That’s good, right? If I stopped really feeling things I wouldn’t be able to write anymore.

A Twilight Lexicon member has come up with a code name for MS called Dark High Noon or DNH. This code name is to encourage Stephenie to continue working on it without having to hear or see the name. It’s a silly way of encouraging SM.

Love this interview – well thought out questions, responses with depth. There are a couple of things I want to touch on: First, I needed to know Stephenie intervened and toned down the kissing scene. After seeing the TV spots and trailers, I was worried they put too much sexuality into the movie. I appreciate knowing the sexual aspect was lessened.

I was heartbroken when it was announced Stephenie Meyer would not continue writing MS. I was worried that she had been permanently hurt and would not consider it again. I hoped time would help her heal but I wasn’t sure until this interview.

I am so happy to hear that Stephenie doesn’t feel jaded after the backlash over Breaking Dawn and over the Midnight Sun leak.
But now, I must pause….to have a fangirl SQUEE. Excuse me a moment. BRB…….

I should be too old for fangirl squeals but I now have hope the Dark High Noon will eventually get written. I cannot tell you how excited that makes me. I’m willing to wait as long as it takes for Stephenie to feel comfortable enough to start writing DHN again.

How do you feel about what Stephenie shared in this interview? Do you like the questions EW asked? Are you happy to hear about Dark High Noon? Share your thoughts!

OMG I’M SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HAPPY THAT STEPHENIE MEYER IS GOING TO FINISH DHN!!!!! i don’t care how long it takes her, i’m just sooo happy that she’s going to actually finish it. i feel sooooo bad for her that it got leaked out on the internet. whatever loser decided to do that to her, god forbid if they’re anywhere near me. stephenie is such an extraordinary author. i don’t know how she does it, but there’s just so much passion in everything that she writes. you can tell she loves her writing soooo much, because she doesn’t want to continue DHN thinking that it won’t turn out right with all of this negativity aimed at her.

i think that stephenie meyer just needs to let go of everything hateful people are saying to her, and just listen to all the other great stuff. because only like, .1 out of every 1000000000000 person hates twilight. there are soooooo many more people out there that absolutely loveeee stephenie (myself included)

and i think that how she actually went to the set of the movie and put her foot down when something didn’t seem right, well i think that’s great!! she kept the book that everyone loved soooo much and made sure that it was kept to our liking. thank you stephenie!!!

and also, one last thing. how a lot of people were like “well i don’t think that they should have cut down on the kissing scene, because there’s a lot of them in the book” well the reason that they did, probably, is because in the book, with stephenie writing all of bella’s thoughts, every little touch, look and kiss can be escaladed more, but with only your eyes seeing it, and not being able to really get an in depth perspective of it, then that’s why they had to make only one, slightly downplayed kissing scene, because they want to make us want more in all the rest of the movies. and to show us how bellas and edwards love grows over the books.

oneee last thing, then i’m done (sorry i’ve written so much. haha) WE ALL LOVE YOU SOOO MUCH STEPHENIE!! CONTINUE WRITING ALL YOUR FREAKING AMMAAAZING BOOKS!!!!!!! YOU ARE THE BEST AUTHOR EVERRRR!!!!!(: (:

With the whole DHN thing, I kind of have some REAL mixed emotions. On one hand, I love Twilight, and wish Stephenie would come out with DHN sooner. On another hand, I am fully aware and fully support that this is HER saga, and she can do what she wants, when she wants, if she wants to. The only thing is that it would be superb if she did finish it. At first I was very, very, VERY hyped about the fact that I would only have to wait two years, (heck, I could be pushing age 100 if she came out with it one way or the other!)but then all these douches make a TON of petitions saying things like, “PLZ PLZ PLZ STEPHENIE! I LUVE TWILIGHT FINISH IT PLEASE!” It bothers me that they don’t understand, or haven’t done their research before starting something as serious as this. This is a book, a book that can become a real bestseller, hit the shelves, excetra. That’s serious. On a different hand (I’ running out on hands!) I would wait forever(I could be dead and then come back to life with reincarnation, and if the book was out then, I would still be pleased :) ) if DHN came out one day. I am perfectly happy with the saga, but an addition would be super. What ticks me off is when people say things like, “If i were her I would change this,” and, “If this and this doesn’t happen, then this book will suck!” It’s HER BOOK! I bet that even if someone remade it it wouldn’t be even NEARLY as great as it is. But, hey, that’s just my opinion. I believe strongly in peoples’ own opinion. :)

  • anonymous

I am not sure… I think she is throwing a fit, just to atract publicity or somethin’… I loved DHN/MS, what is posted in her site anyway… I really hope she continues to write it… It is the best book in the series for me…

  • sarah

i would love to read the 5th book but as *****addicted***** as i am i would like stethenie to right it in her own time, great books like these cant be rushed. I only came across the books when twilight was relesed in the cinma. My sister told me to shut up and stop going on about the books and i told her she should give them a read because they are SO great. She did and how she’s addicted to. But i can handle to read these a few more times and make do with the films new moon to be relese nov 20, 2009 and iv heard the relese of eclise is due out 7mounth’s after but will wait and see what happens. these’s are the only books iv ever read. The story just keeps me addicted its a love story we all dream we could have in some ways but also the loves so strong for a family such as the cullens.

so stephenie dont let people push you u take the time u need to get the story done and people are that excited to read it, then we will just have to wait like me……..so good luck stepenie xx

  • Milica

I think that she shouldn’t listen to the idiots that said anything bad about the “Breaking down”!!! The book is fantastic and no one has the right to tell her how to write it because that’s her book and SHE wrote the first three parts and ONLY she could have writen the forth part so good!!! And about the DHN, I agree that she should take a pause because then she won’t have the presure and I belive that it will be another fantastis book tha I will probably read in one breath like all the others!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D

  • Susan

I didn’t realize that there was a problem with Breaking Dawn. I loved it!!! Those that didn’t…oh well. The thing is, the book is on the Best Sellers list so clearly there were a LOT of people who loved it. And another thing…all those that love to hate or be anti Twilight..funny thing about that…they all have read the books and seen the movie. LOL So they are supporters as well in sick way. LOL
But I have a question. I don’t know if this is right or not but wasn’t there a controversy before with an Author who wrote a book and then everyone wanted him to write another one and since he wasn’t then someone else wrote it and when the original author became aware of someone completing his books he then wrote the other books? I want to say it was the Silence of the Lambs series? So if Stephenie puts her draft up, that doesn’t mean that someone can get a hold of it and finish it for her does it? I don’t want that happening. I want HER to finish it.
It also makes me wonder if Someone might then write Edward’s POV for the other books too. Something that almost everyone wants. The thing is, I’d probably buy it cause I’m human and curious by nature but we all know that would totally suck if Stephenie didn’t write it so I hope that she covers her bases so that others can’t hurt her further by completely her work.

  • Superman_97

Ok well, look at this comment cause some people will hate me for this but first, I LOVE THE TWILIGHT SERIES!!! But sadly, i very much dislike Robert Pattinson. To Stephenie Meyer, I give her all my support and I tried to go along with her decision of Rob, but im sorry…. I JUST CANT!!! But the decision of Emmett (Kellan Lutz) omg hes hot!!!!! i love him with all my heart!!! but to rob…. good luck….i guess with your career… But plz plz plz plz plz plz STOP your singing!!! this isnt nice, i know, but….you kind of well …. suck… other than that plz continue your great work with all of your books!!! luv u all…except rob…. =)*(=

  • kiki108799

  • Maria Jansson

I am devastated about the MS-leak, that has hurt not only SM, but will affect all of us fans negatively too!
The problem is that I am not sure she will have that “silence” that she says she will need to finish the book. The only thing to do is to try to help her the best we can. By being silent, obviously….

  • angel figgins

  • http://www.myspace.com/victoria_single Victoria

I think stephenie meyer should write the midnight sun/dark high noon book! in two years most peple will probably forget about twilight and they will have to read the whole series over again just to remember what all happened! I can’t wait that long just to read a book, she really needs to go ahead and get it published so other people can enjoy it.

  • Alejandra

I have hear that Midnight Sun was suppose to be out this month…

  • Rachel

I wish she would write it sooner, but i’m happy to hear that she’s still thinking of writing it. When i heard about the rough draft being leaked, i was shocked, and i refuse to read it. I am staying faithful to Stephenie and holding on to the hope that she will finish it someday, even if i have to wait a decade or two. Stephenie, if you’re reading this, just know that some of us out here would rather not read what you never intended us to see, but will wait.

  • http://twilightersanonymous.com mrs.emmet cullen

OMG Thanks so much steph for coming out of your fog I hope things with the new book get better n better keep it commin I cant get enough!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Cinderella

I honestly don’t think SM would make us wait 2 years for MS…these characters are just as much part of her life as there apart of our life now. I understand her being upset as i would be too… but i think its kind of unfair that she would allow one person, one horrible rotten person ruin it for her millions of fans, and when i say fans im speaking of her true fans…the ones who have stood by and wanted to break necks when they hear bad reviews about the books we love so much.

  • Dannielle

soo does this mean there wont be and seqeals to the host like the soul and the body aww that sucks i really loved those books people shouldnt tell me theres gonna be when theres not damb (tears) oh well cant wait for Dark High Noon
