ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: WILL TAYLOR KEEP HIS ROLE AS JACOB?

Posted January 6th, 2009 By: Team Switzerland 86 Comments »

Entertainment Weekly has a new article recounting all the drama surrounding the role of Jacob Black the past few months, what Taylor Lautner is doing to beef up, and what screenplay writer Melissa Rosenberg had to say about why Taylor may not fit the role. They even say that Summit is expected to announce a ‘big casting choice’ for the next film sometime this week:

By the time you read these words, Taylor Lautner’s fate may already have been decided. He’ll either be reprising his role as Jacob Black in the almost-ready-to-shoot Twilight sequel New Moon, or he’ll be an exceedingly rare species in Holly wood: an actor fired for looking too young.

This week, Summit Entertainment is expected to announce a big casting choice for the next film based on Stephenie Meyer’s wildly successful series of vampire romance novels. Kristen Stewart, 18, is set to return as Bella Swan, the beautiful human girl who falls for a soft-hearted blood-sucker. And Robert Pattinson, 22, has a lock on his job, too; his turn as Edward Cullen, the hunky, soulful vampire, has made him an overnight superstar with young female movie-goers around the planet. But Lautner, 16, has a more uncertain future. That’s because the character he was so perfectly cast to play in the first Twilight film—a slim, baby-faced teenager—will be greatly expanded in the sequel. And by greatly expanded, we mean into a hulking, snarling, seven-foot Lycan. ”Ja cob is a totally different character in New Moon,” says Melissa Rosenberg, screenwriter of both Twilight films. ”He’s a foot taller and huge—and he’s supposed to look 25. It’s really a question of whether or not the same actor can play the role.” Rosenberg is quick to add, however, ”everyone would love to keep him. We all think he’s the loveliest person ever.”

Lautner’s certainly been doing everything in his mortal power to hang on to the part. Since Twilight, he’s gained 19 pounds and is promising to pack on ten more before shooting starts on New Moon this March. And judging from a widely reprinted red-carpet interview, he’s not shy about letting Summit and New Moon’s director Chris Weitz (who joined the fran chise last month after Twilight’s director, Catherine Hardwicke left over creative differences) know that he has the chops for the gig. ”My job for Twilight was to bring Ja cob to life—the friendly, happy-go-lucky little Jacob,” he told MTV.com. ”My job for New Moon is completely different. I’ve been looking forward to that. I’ve been getting ready for that, and I will assure them I can follow through with that.”

Fans of the Twilight novels—specifically those who identify themselves as ”Team Jacob”—are divided over whether Lautner has the machismo to carry ”New Moon.” In fact, pro-Lautner/anti-Lautner fights have been breaking out on the web for weeks. As screenwriter Rosenberg puts it, ”He has to play a romantic lead against Rob, who’s a 23-year old man. That’s a tall order.”

Summit declined to comment on the specifics of this story but Twilight has so far grossed $262 million worldwide and usually when a studio hits franchise pay dirt it tries to keep all the parts in place. But there are exceptions. Just this past October, Marvel announced it was replacing Terrence Howard with Don Cheadle in Iron Man 2. Nick Stahl took over for the uninsurable Eddie Furlong as John Conner in Terminator 3, while Jake Gyllenhaal very nearly stole Spiderman out from under Tobey Maguire. Recently, there have been rumors that Ben Barnes (Prince Caspian) and Michael Copon (Mummy II) are jockeying for Lautner’s spot. But you can chalk that up to empty web noise: reps for both actors say nei ther has been approached for the role. In fact, in what may shape up to be a triumpth of the un derdog, sources close to the production say that the simplest route would be to go with Lautner. EW has confirmed that the actor has not only met with director Weitz, but even screen-tested for chemistry with Kristen Stewart. ”I’m very hopeful,” a New Moon insider says of Lautner. ”We’re not looking at anybody else.”

The irony, it turns out, is that Summit went to an awful lot of trouble to find Lautner in the first place. Two years ago, the studio launched a na tionwide campaign auditioning hundreds of hopefuls in a search for just the right Native American actor to play Jacob Black. They never did find one—Lautner, turns out, is French, Dutch, and German—but it was a lot of work. Of course, nobody back then could have anticipated just how huge a phenomenon the first Twilight movie would become—or how much would end up riding on the casting of its sequel. Even if Lautner does keep his job, he may be nervous enough to start pulling his fur out.

I’m still Team Taylor all the way – and I am crossing my fingers that they will keep him as Jacob. And I know it’s a little weird – but now that we’ve gotten word that Summit is expected to make the announcement this week, I am not even excited to hear it – I’m actually really nervous!

So what did you think of this article, Twilighters? Who do you think should play the role of Jacob? Has your mind changed at all? And what about the expected announcement – are you nervous or excited?

First I heard Steven Staight was horrible in 10,000 BC. I don’t even remember him from Sky High and I think he looks less Native American than Taylor does. I think it’s about the chemistry with Kristen. The chemistry between Rob and Kristen was the thing that overcame the poor script for Twilight. I am so over Melissa Rosenberg – she said Taylor can’t play opposite 23 year old Rob. First Rob is 22 until May and he’s playing a 17 year old! It’s called ACTING. Second look at ELF, I know he’s tall but I’m pretty sure Will Farrell didn’t really tower over Bob Newheart – they can shoot to make Taylor look taller than he really is. I guess I’m voting for the known rather than have them mess up New Moon with the casting. The script will probably change everything anyway.

I actually like the idea of Taylor doing New Moon but maybe having Steven Strait or Michael Copon take over for Eclipse. It’s better suited that way in my opinion. Go back and read the books if you have to. Eventually, Taylor will be too young and cute to play Jacob. And I am a fan of Taylor.

  • Dave

I haven’t read the books myself, but my wife has and the way she describes New Moon Jacob, he’s huge and looks alot older, just as everyone else is saying. But the problem is Taylor looks to young for the part, now we haven’t seen him since he’s gained his weight but he’s still to short. Now they can fix that by using a trick the Lord of the Rings used, called “Forced Perspective”. For anyone who seen the movies you’ll notice the the Hobbits are a lot shorter than everyone else, they did this by have the Elijah Wood and Sean Aston standing further back from the camera. Now if they did that with Taylor, having other actors standing further back he would seem taller, otherwise Taylor needs to go and they need to bring in Michael Copon, otherwise the movie will be ruined because Taylor will not the fit part. Sorry for my long rant just trying to explain the only way Taylor could be given the part imo

  • Tara

Looks like Taylor’s lunch with Weitz may have went better than expected. Lol! That boy and his determination!

  • CAEdge

It’s sad but, come on… Jacob grows up and up and up and up… it’s part of the mythology and Taylor is NOT going to be able to fill Jacob’s New Moon shoes.

My worry is that they will cast someone who is more attractive than Rob. Honestly… RP is kinda strange looking… sometimes hot, sometimes just too skinny and weird. His Edward was a acquired taste for me. I think he is quite hot in the part now… but he can’t take too much competition. I don’t want Bella/Jacob to overshadow the Bella/Edward connection.

I am Team Taylor, and my heart is set to always be Team Taylor. And nothing in the world could change it. I will support Taylor All the way. Either he is JACOB or NOT! But I wrote to the summit, that my hopes is that Taylor is Jacob in New Moon. And since the summit is announcing it this week. I am totally nervous. Not excited. But nervous, as in i can pull my hair out. You wouldn’t know how heart broken I’ll be if Taylor Isn’t Jacob. TAYLOR COULD ONLY BE JACOB!

  • Tracy

I feel bad for Taylor. I am totally team Edward! Since “Jacob” didn’t have that big of a part in Twilight, changing the actor personally wouldn’t be that big of a deal. As long as they get someone who truly “gets the books!” I don’t want some guy who just got lucky w/ this part and read the cliff=notes over the weekend.

As far as Steven Strait…..Stephanie Meyer had on her website back many moons ago who she imagined for each character. She had a picture of Steven Strait and said when she was writing the book, that’s who she pictured as Jacob. She also mention something about him being too “old” now. Maybe she was refering to him playing in Twilight, but New Moon and on……Oh yeah!

Steven Strait as Jacob……..Lets just say I’m still Team Edward, but I would enjoy watching the game a lot more if Steven was playing!

  • Bea

Summit should keep Taylor Lautner as Jacob Black, if they really want to be successful with New Moon, they better hire Taylor. Seriously. He’s got not only the looks, but the PERSONALITY, the essence of Jacob Black.

I’m really nervous. TEAM TAYLOR all the way!

  • Chy Thomas-Pattinson

First off, Ben Barnes was said to try to be Aro, not jake, and secondly .. have you seen Taylor Laurner lately???? i mean … GOD!! he is HOT!!! sure, he’s a little, uh, little, but and i’m typing this, as your reading this, he’s trying to get bigger for the movie … that’s how much he wants to be in it. I say let him be, for the flashbacks at the very least. I know 20 girls, in love w/ taylor … and they say they’ll go crazy if he’s not in it.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gorgeousingeek lollidork

Well there were a few points made. I mean, I’m just as avid a Team Taylor girl as anyone on this page, but it really is a tall order for Taylor Lautner to fill. I believe in his ability as an actor and I’m hoping for the best, but if there is THIS much muck and rabble over Taylor playing Jacob in New Moon, I mean, is anybody thinking about what’s going to happen with Eclipse and Breaking Dawn???

Jacob only progresses from here. He gets older and he gets even taller, and the scenes become even more dramatic from New Moon on…

I’m not saying Taylor’s not up for the challenge…I’m just saying that this IS a TALL order to fill…quite literally.

I get this feeling that we’re not going to like Summit’s big announcement in this coming week…oooh man am I ever scared.

  • Josh0823

I don’t know. Taylor, to me didn’t really have a big enough part in Twilight to make the studio worry much about changing the actor. He just doesn’t have the right look if you ask me. While he did ok with the “younger looking” Jacob, I just dont think he’d be right for New Moon Jacob. Jacob is supposed to be able to be worthy competition to Edward in the fight for Bella’s affection. I just don’t see that in Taylor Lautner. I think they could find someone better, my personal choice would be Steven Strait. He’s got the look and the height and I think he’s worthy of competing with Rob.

  • twilight_fan_808

i for one, am totally agaisnt replacing jacob. why? because i know taylor lautner is a great actor and can take on this role. and plus its not that hard to just use special effects! they do it all the time with other roles. so why cant they just do that now??? plus i mean look at him!!!!!1 why would u want to give up something lyk that????? hes SmOkInG!!!!!!!!! and personally whenever i imagine any of the twilight sequels i always imagine taylor lautner as jacob black. no one else. so what does that tell you???????/ KEEP TAYLOR LAUTNER

  • Lexy C.

Alright, let’s be serious. I know this movie has a large teenage fanbase, but there are adults who love Twilight too. And I’m sorry, but a baby-faced 16-year-old boy is no competition for Rob Pattinson. I don’t care if he gained 30 pounds of muscle. He would still look like a kid. I don’t even know why this is such a huge discussion…studios usually recast older actors to play the older version of a character.

Taylor is a lovely kid and I’m sure he’ll have a great career. But he shouldn’t be harming his body by trying to gain excessive amounts of weight in such a short time just to keep a role. There will be other age-appropriate roles out there for him. I hope Summit casts a handsome twenty-something guy who will give Rob a run for his money in the romance department and really heat up the Bella/Edward/Jacob love triangle.

  • slr5

the bottom line is that he is way too small and he is a minor. It will take forever to shoot the film because he can only work so many hours a day and he is tooooo short. Sure he is sweet and was perfect for the Twilight Jacob, but making a bad movie because you really like someone is bad for everyone including Taylor.

  • AliceCullen

If CHris Weitz gets rid of Taylor he can expect to be assassinated

  • emmy

He can do it. He was a very natural, believable actor in Twilight – better than some others that’s for sure. If he’s directed to play it meaner and rougher, more aloof, he will for sure. He can be made up to look a lot older. Summit just needs to invest in some CGI for him at times. They have to for all the werewolves.

  • Saiya

Umm… if anyone actually reads the article they say that more than likely he will reprise his role. The production folks hope they can keep him and those other guys which are listed weren’t and haven’t been contacted, so EW got the director rumors spot on, it’s funny how this leaked all of a sudden.Copon appears to have gotten ahead of himself and they didn’t even want to anyonelse, so hopefully Taylor made his case which from the looks of it he might have.

  • Colleen

    TAYLOR ALLL THE WAY!

  • Cassidy

Taylor is absoulutley awesome for Jacob, I have seen his amazing skills in other movies, and I know he can step up and be the Jacob we all want and need.
Go Taylor, I beleive in you!

  • http://TwilightersAnonymous Gwen Stewart

He’s an actor, for god sakes, he can act older. He’s working out to change his physique. He’s mentally primed to do this part. And I HATE when a sequel changes actors, it makes it a whole different experience for me. I loved Taylor as Jacob. It won’t take too much imagination on my part, with the changes Taylor is making on his part, for me to feel him as the Werewolf Jacob. Besides, so much is going to BE imagination, anyway. Are they scouring the earth to find nine foot wolves? They are not going to be able to be true to the book point-for-point, it’s impossible. Taylor is a martial arts champion, he can do the acting, give the kid some credit, he’s a pro!

  • Lexy C.

It’s interesting that people keep talking about using special effects to make Taylor seem bigger. Why would the studio want to waste that money when they could just hire a bigger/older actor? They are already giving the movie a small budget…and they have tons of other effects that have to be done much better than they were in the first film. So, to me, it would be silly of them to throw money towards making an actor fit a role, rather than casting an actor who already fits the role.

    Steven Strait!!:)

  • Lilly

Taylor needs to keep his job as jacob! I’ve seen him in other movies and he was fantastic!

  • Renae

well i hope taylor still keeps his role as jacob cuz he IS jacob and i was hoping that he would gain some muscle so he could still be a built jacob. well i hope/pray that jacob still keeps on being jacob cuz it wouldn’t be awesome without him =]

    TEAM TAYLOR ALL DA WAY!!!

  • Pir8girl

What doesn’t make sense is the fact that the movie has done so well and that they are willing to sacrifice and change the actors. Taylor Lautner has the perfect appearance for Jacob. So what if he’s not a few inches taller or a little bit “bulkier.” Some other actors don’t nesscessarily fit their roles for other movies so whats the difference with this one? Taylor will fully fulfill his role as Jacob and he knows what he has to take on. Some people don’t realize how great he would be as Jacob no matter what he looks like.

*Even some of my friends that are Twilight fans and are Team Edward think that Taylor would be fantastic for Jacob!

  • Taylor FTW

    KEEP TAYLOR!
I know he could hold his own against Rob in the romance department, if not blow him away. If they pick any other actor, i really don’t think i’ll even bother seeing New Moon at all.
New Moon was my favorite book, if they screw up the movie over something as silly as the lack of like 5-7 inches, i’ll be SOOOO PISSED!
Wasn’t Chris supposed to be some kind of hot shot with CGI?! what is this crap?!

  • Jenny

The thing about Taylor is that Jacob is supposed to be tall and thin, yet buff, and Taylor does kind of fit that discription. A LOT of people are going to be insanely pissed if he’s replaced, and I’m one of them. He is a great actor and I think he fits the role of Jacob just fine.

  • sucalder

    I hope I don’t upset anyone with my comment…

I think Taylor is really cute and adorable, but that’s the problem. I do not see him as the Jacob that gives Edward competition. To me, Jacob needs to be at the same level as Edward in order for it to be believable for Bella to fall in love with him. Taylor doesn’t have that…sorry.

The person I always saw as Jacob, for some strange reason, is Steven Strait. I definitely see him giving Edward something to worry about.

At this point though, I really don’t care who they cast as Jacob, as long as he has the right looks and can act.

  • http://www.myspace.com/darkhabits Lissete [Frerard Addict]

Well I don’t know if this is okay…but I heard there’s going to be a peaceful protest march thingy on Saturday here in LA Cali.
I might go if my mom let’s me! :)

  • archuleta24

Aright there are MANY huge arguments here. But honestly guys think logically, all who want Steven Strait, they haven’t even considered the guy, the’ve considered Copon. Honestly I am Team Taylor all the way, but if they did have to change, we wouldn’t get Strait like everyone who wants the change would like to see. We would have Copon, and Copon is a HORRIBLE actor. He would just butcher the character of Jacob, and then more fans would be upset. It took them a long time to get Taylor and I really hope he stays because I believe he has what it takes to bring on the new Jacob. He is getting bigger, and it’s called faith. WB wanted to replace Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter, but now they have him for good and are GLAD! I believe Summit will feel the same when they realize Taylor is perfect! He goes so well with this role.

No one but Taylor for me!

  • GeneGenie

I completely agree with twilightmama. Your outline of the New Moon movie is what we were just discussing in our household. Even my young teenage daughters agree. However is chosen, it will be something to look forward to – Taylor’s needed change to fill his character traits – or someone new to give Edward a run for his money!!

  • MECCA

    eep!!!
irts offical taylor is staying jacob!!!!
    !!!=D

  • imatruetwilightfannotsomebandwagonjumperwhoonlylikeditonceitwaspopular

well, guys, the fact of the matter is:
    Taylors a wimp.
he may not really be, but he shure looks like one. hes simply too small to play Jacob. Srry bud. better luck next time

  • Twihard

I really hope Taylor gets to keep his role. Summit is going to be dumb not to recast him. I understand he needs to be taller, but can’t they use cheat shoes. Thousands of Taylor Lautner lovers will only see New Moon once, if at all, if he is not Jacob Black. Taylor is my one and only Jacob.
I’m excited to find out the cast, but also very worried.
Team Taylor is DEMANDING that Summit cst Taylor Lautner!!

  • twilightmama

I guess I should be used to people being so simple minded on a message board after so many years of doing this…

Taylor being Jacob is a terrible idea. He wasn’t a good Jacob for Twilight and he is NOT a good Jacob for any further adaptations. He looks ridiculous with his fake hair, dark skin vs whiter-than-white-teeth and his size. I don’t care how much muscle he builds: he is not Jacob.

I have been visualizing books since the 1970′s and when I visualize Jacob, I do NOT see Taylor. When he was the one representing Jacob in Twilight? I snickered. I still do. It’s a silly idea.

I am sincerely sorry if I offend anyone with my opinion. I just think Taylor Lautner is not a good Jacob.

  • Melanie

I cannot wait for New Moon! Especially the parts in Italy…

  • http://mhmm Alysssssssa!

I think that Taylor is way to young to be playing the role of jacob. In Twilight he is supposed to be young, but in New Moon, he is supposed to be competition for Edward and I don’t think Taylor can pull that off. I read that Ben Barnes might be one for the role, and I can definintley picture him as Jacob. He’s older, totally handsome, and has something about them that just screams, Jacob! I really hope that he would get the part, but just as long as Taylor is out!
