E! ONLINE: MELISSA ROSENBERG COMMENTS ON ‘ECLIPSE’ CASTING, ‘NEW MOON’ SCRIPT AND ‘BREAKING DAWN’ RUMORS

Posted April 27th, 2009 By: Evie 36 Comments »

E! Online has a great interview with Melissa Rosenberg. Melissa comments on who she could see playing Riley in Eclipse, the New Moon script and the Breaking Dawn rumors:

If Channing Tatum hasn’t read the Twilight books, he may want to start.

At least one very important person in the movie adaptations of Stephenie Meyer’s vampire love story thinks Tatum would be perfect to play bad-boy vampire Riley in Eclipse, the third in the four-book series.

“There’s a very big battle at the end with Riley, and I think Channing would do that so well,” Twilight and New Moon screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg, who is currently writing the Eclipse script, told us this weekend at the Los Angeles Times Book Festival benefit for the Writers Guild Foundation.

“And there are some complexities to that character,” she adds. “He really is tragic. He’s a puppet for Victoria [bad-girl vampire played by Rachelle Lefevre]. So he has to break your heart a little bit at the end when he realizes that she doesn’t want him. Channing could do that beautifully.”

Rosenberg also confirmed some good news for Robert Pattinson fans…

Even though Edward Cullen may not be in the New Moon novel as much as he is in the others, she promised we’ll be seeing plenty of the Brit actor in the flick, which is currently shooting in Vancouver with director Chris Weitz.

“In the book, he’s actually an enormous presence in [Bella’s] mind,” Rosenberg said. “He’s so present in her mind throughout the entire center of the book, so we really played off that, and it kept him alive in a slightly different way, but fans will feel it’s true to the book. You can’t have a Twilight without Rob Pattinson.”

And Rosenberg says you also can’t have a Twilight movie with anything more adult than a PG-13 rating. She has yet to be hired to write the script for the fourth, Breaking Dawn, but she thinks it’s safe to assume the book’s more graphic violent scenes will be tailored to keep it accessible for Twilight’s teen moviegoing audience.

“Our fans are in the PG age range, and I don’t feel a big necessity to see violence, and to see gore,” Rosenberg said. “I don’t need to see that. This whole series is more about their relationship. It’s not about the gore. I mean, there are some scary and special elements to it, but the series is really about relationships and coming of age and owning one’s power.”

(Thanks JeTaun!)

Hmm, I can kind of see this guy playing Riley. I get so caught up in the Bella, Edward and Jacob drama that I tend to forget about characters like Riley. But Melissa is right, he really is a sad character the way he is used by Victoria. As for Breaking Dawn, they just have to make it! Summit has to understand by now that we need it!

What do you think of this interview with Melissa? Do you think Channing should be considered for the part of Riley?

As for the “gore” in Breaking Dawn, I think it could be done in the movie without being too graphic. For instance in the child birth scene, it would be easy to shoot it by moving camera angles around so that we don’t actually see Edward cut/bite her open to get Nessie out. They could show him move in then cut to Bella’s face in agony and then to Jacob showing disgust and concern for Bella. And of course Bella would be a bit bloody, but that’s about as gruesome as it would look on screen. Just never show her below the waist.

Does everyone agree here? It can be done I believe and still have the intended effect by leaving some to the imagination.

  • may

i completely agree with autumn. also, i can’t see channing tatum playing riley.. he’s a great actor and everything, but i kind of imagined riley looking more like a jasper, in a way.. idk

  • edelacruz

Hmm…I can see Channing Tatum doing the role of Riley – although I can’t stop thinking of him doing Step it up to the Streets! =) I don’t know about Melissa’s comment about Breaking Dawn only being PG-13. You can get a lot out of that rating, but still…I don’t know how the older fanbase will handle her saying that we don’t need to see the gore. HELLO? We’re all die hard – of course we need to see it! If it’s in the book, people will want to see it.

I just saw Channing Tatum in “Fighting” last weekend. Channing plays this guy who plays in this underground fighting club. Well, judging by Channing’s perform in “Fighting”, I could easily imagine that Channing beats Rob hands down! However, Cam Gigandet was in a movie called “Never Back Down” last year (a lot of critics compare “Fighting to “Never Back Down” because their plots are similar) and Cam played a fighter in that movie. Rob/Edward won that fight in the Twilight movie… so….

    Sure, bring it on!

  • Addicted to Edward

“but she thinks it’s safe to assume the book’s more graphic violent scenes will be tailored to keep it accessible for Twilight’s teen moviegoing audience.”

This comment bothers me. I think they should stick closer to the book than worry about keeping it PG-13.

I could live with a compromise like Autumn suggests…it stays true to the book without being graphic. What I wouldn’t like is changing the entire premise just so it stays a certain rating. ie Making the pregnancy not so hard on Bella’s body, making the birth less than the horrific event it really is.

  • dnyl1215

As for Channing, I say yes..he is awesome, and just the other day I was talking to my hubs and he we saw the preview for “fighting” and he goes “that guy should be in the series!”…odd.

As for the rating..I’m not very keen on her comments. While I know that the series has a wide variety of ages who love it,restricing it to pg-13..I just dont see it. I’m not asking for gore, but I am asking for a movie that stays close to the book. Does that make sense?

  • Lee

    I can’t see Channing playing the role of Riley. Riley is described by Bella as follows;

“I could barely look at the blond boy-yes, he was just a boy, though he was muscular and tall, maybe my age when he was changed.”

And I think he is to old to play that part, just by reading the description in Eclipse pg 541

  • Lindsay

I love Channing Tatum, and to have him in the movie would be great, but I don’t think he would be right for the role of Riley. I always saw Riley as a younger kid that Victoria took advantage of…. but thats just my opinion. : ) Nonetheless, they will do an awesome job no matter what.

  • Rene

IDK how they’re going to give Breaking Dawn a PG-13 rating with all of the nudity! The honeymoon, Bella giving birth to Renesmee, Jacob ever consistant changing into wolf form, same as Leah, Bella’s first night as a vampire. So much nudity in the book, IDK how they’re going to pull it in movie form. A lot of imagination?! :-)
    ~Rene’

  • Renee

If the movie was rate R, it wouldn’t even effect the audience numbers. When I went to see the new Friday the Thirteenth on opening night, There were so many kids in there younger than 17 it wasn’t even funny.

  • looneygirl

I agree with Lee and Lindsay…Riley is a young “boy”. Channing is gorgeous, but too old (sorry Channing! lol). As for the PG rating…give me a break!! how many times do we have to say that the books were never meant for such a young audience?? I want to experience Breaking Dawn the way it was written. Not have it toned down and ruined. Who doesn’t want to see Isle Esme and the feathers??? lol I know I do.

  • Gabby

I completely agree with Autumn, I don’t see why anything would need to be “tailored” for Breaking Dawn. They just have to be smart about it, keep it real but not too graphic for the sake of MPAA. I don’t really see much of a challenge because Stephenie didn’t write a gory novel, her approach was intense but not over the top, she gave us a change to explore and get our imagination to work.

As for Riley I also saw him as a boy Victoria took advantage of, so Channing definitely doesn’t cover that. Seriously, who could take advantage of him?lol

  • Chelle

Does that mean there will be a movie for Breaking Dawn?! I sure hope they don’t decide to stop with Eclipse. As for the ratings, I don’t think they should just concern themselves with PG-13, I’m 33 and I’m addicted to this series! I’m sure they can find ways not to make certain events in Breaking Dawn less gruesome than described in the book but still stay true to the written story.

This such great newes, THANK YOU!!! What i want to know is when are there addiotions for roles or like where do we send our hed-shots. I’m trying to become a actress and i thought id’e start with my fav. movie.

So any whey thank you this is so intresting. THANKS!!!

  • Emily

I agree with Autumn about the gore, they can still show the scenes without having the cameras dive headfirst in to them.
I also however agree with some of the points Gabby made. The novel Stephenie wrote wasn’t really gory, and the more intimate scenes didn’t go in to any detail either, thats where our imaginations come in.
I think they can stick to the book, without having to alter the films rating. They can show the scenes on Isle Esme, and Bella’s nights after her transformation without having to give it an “R” rating! I mean come on, every night on TV some show has sexual content in it right? And yet they are basic cable during prime time.
I sure hope they stick close to the books, i want to see the feathery aftermath as well!! And, as its been said the books weren’t made for 8 year olds… They weren’t the targeted audience in the first place, so why should things be changed just because they are in the picture. And as Renee said, an R rating (or a pg-13 for those under 13) doesn’t stop the little ones from showing up at the theater, or i guess more, it doesn’t stop their parents from bringing them.

I don’t know that I can him as Riley. I think someone younger would be better.

As for the violence, you can get alot into a PG-13 rating. I could live with what Autumn was saying. And for the honeymoon scenes, I think it can be done tastefully and close to the book without showing nudity or anything really graphic. I want to see Isle Esme and feathers as well, but no need for an R rating.

  • shonla

I agree with you Emily! I hope the stay true to the books too! I understand that they probably wont have Kristen nude in the move but there are ways around that! You see girls in bras and panties or lingerie all the time in PG-13 movies!I’m an older Twilight fan so the whole honeymoon was like the part I’d been waiting for lol! It took me three books to get to it and the birth too that has to be in there!

  • Katie

i know that the twilight saga is to do with Edward and Bella’s relationship, but I think the violence and gore should be left in – thats what makes the books more exciting. It would also give the audience a clearer idea of what is going on (if they havnt read the books). I understand why people dont want the violence in the movies, but just a tiny bit on the main parts would do the trick. Tatum would be a perfect choice for Riley.

  • joeysmama

I don’t know if anybody has noticed that some of the “horror” movies they make now have PG-13 ratings. They can do alot with those scenes and not really show anything at all. If they don’t make Breaking Dawn then why did they even make Twilight.

  • Maria

I absolutely cant see channing tatum as riley.I imagined him really young and looks very vulnerable and sort of innocent.Channing has that “tough guy” kinda look.I doubt they will pick him anyway because it might take the attention off rob since channing aint so bad looking.

  • vlmarsee

Ok so I agree with everyone. First I am 37 absolutely LOVE this story and do not want to see it compromised for a rating. Either tell the story as it is for the fans or don’t make the movie. Of course if they don’t make the movie I am sure we are all going to go CRAZY. My thoughts while reading Breaking Dawn were how are they even going to get all this into 1 movie. I am of the opinion that to do it and do it right and give us the whole story they should split Breaking Dawn and make it into 2 movies! As for the above actor playing Riley he is a cutey but not at all how I pictured Riley and if the screenwriter for Eclipse is liking him it makes me very nervous as to what else she may be picturing differently.

  • barbyr

I want to see the birth scene with all its blood and gore! IT IS bloody and gory! If parents are letting their children read these books then they have already read the scene. Why worry about it when it’s on screen. I’m a parent, I let my daughter read the books and it does not bother me if she sees the blood and gore. If she doesn’t like it, she can close her eyes. These movies are obviously being marketed for the tween/teen age groups, but there are SO many fans that are not tweens or teens. I think they need to stay true to the book and try to satisfy all age groups.

  • patty

youk now chanign tuatm, whhy not. he would make agodo riely. i wondwe who wil paly prey. I officaly cna’t wait for newm oon. the movies gonan even in the twilight movie (though twilight is favem ovie but any tiwlgiht mvoei will be a mogn my faves. so when new moons come out I’ rpally lvoe it mreo tehn teh book and hat wil lbe my favem movie/twilgihtm ovei. then it’ll be eclsipe and then breakign dawn. I hosnetyly hoep they do make breakign dawn though. its a ogog diea to be careful adn tialor some of the scenes.

  • Midnight Angel

The fan base is in the PG-13 range? When did that happen? Has she EVER gone onto some of the fan sites to see how many OLDER fans there are? I’m willing to bet that there are more of us than there are of the tweens….I have just lost all hope in the rest of the Saga movies being watchable with her as the screenwriter.

  • court

    ahh, i love channing :) ♥
    he’d be great for riley

  • Shannon

Hmmmm…..I was picturing Riley more like a young Paul Walker. I don’t see Channing Tatum in that role at all. I’d like to know who Stephenie Meyer would like to see in that role. Who cares what the screenwriter thinks!

  • Shannon

I could see Channing Tatum in the role of Garrett in Breaking Dawn…..

  • Ashley

I don’t see how Melissa Rosenberg can say that she ‘doesn’t NEED’ gore and sexuality .. well obviously Twilight fans don’t care what SHE NEEDS. We want to see it all. Who cares about keeping it PG-13. I’d rather they had it rated R and include all the things that were in the book without sacrificing anything. It wouldn’t affect the sales regardles ANYHOW!

  • ZuZu

I always imagined riley a little more boyish

  • TwilightTweaker

Eh, not really feeling this one. Channing is cute, adorable, and definitely has the physique to pull of a role like this, but his look just doesn’t seem to fit in what I envisioned for Riley. I see that I’m not alone on this, so I hope they’ll contemplate and look around a little more before casting this role. After the great casting choices Chris Weitz has made for NM thus far, it’s hard to not be so critical for the future movies.

  • jenb

I agree with MR that if they do BD (which I REALLY hope they do) we don’t need to see all the blood & gore, I agree with Autumn that with camera angles & such we can know what’s going on & not have all the blood. I’m sure they can do it in a tasteful & good way so that it’s no higher than a PG-13 rating.

  • monica

I completely agree with renee…the same thing happened to me when I went to go see friday the 13..there were nothing but little kids there so parents obviously told care what their children watch in the movies…just stick to the way the book has it or theres going to be a lot of disappointed fans including myself…who doesnt see sex and gore these days on regular television…honestly little kids shouldnt be reading that sort of material anyways

  • Daniel

I absolutely agree with everybody who thinks Channing is not right for the role. He is to…Manly i would say. Riley is meant to be a boy around the age of Bella, and meant to have a sort of innocence about him. Im pretty sure he would be slightly tall too. However as someone mentioned above i think Channing would do a really good job as Garret in BD, since he is a nomad Channing could pull off the rugged adventurer quite well IMO.

  • http://www.aol.com lynn ramiscal

I agree to almost everybody channing is so adorable but according tothe book he’s young so he has to be younger than Bella and edward. H looks good playing Garrett for Kate but definitely not Riley..With the love story on Isle Esme it has to be included w/o all of the Gory details I actually have done a script of my own for the eclipse and breaking dawn on my own script I showed the intense feeling of Bella as a pheromone driven teenager w/ caution on every move she makes and incorporates her total surrender and devotion towards Edward and Jake w/o that much nudity nor gore, blood..it is simply an everlasting love brought by Edward, the passion the chemistry that plays between bella and him and also, being torn between 2 lovers at the same time..If Ms Rosenberg can see my script she will love it..I want to show her actions, fantasy, little suspense w/ some horror, w/ a new twist in the world of love story also in my script it has more lessons for teenagers nowadays on how to treat themselves and their body coming age

  • Else

ah-ah-ah, Rosenberg needs to be corrected. When I read the last book BD, the first thing I said is that they better go a little further than what they have done in the previous books to validate the project. Skirting around everything is NOT what viewers want to see, Meyers already did that and everyone is sick of it. Too bad if there is violence in the last film, the kids already read it, they already know, it’s up to the parents to explain anything that kids don’t understand. Either that or they will have to wait until they get a little older to see it. They could always release on DVD an edited version, but if the movie doesn’t show any intimacy between Edward & Bella or the true parts of the book aren’t there, there will be some very disappointed fans. Don’t be babies about it.
