Entertainment Weekly Popwatch - ‘Twilight’: If Dakota Fanning is Jane, who should be Alec?
With news that Dakota Fanning will meet with New Moon director Chris Weitz next week to formally discuss her being offered the role of vampire Jane in the Twilight sequel, it’s time for us to help Weitz find his Alec, Jane’s bloodsucker brother. According to the books, Alec is a pale boy (surprise) who could be Jane’s twin. “His hair was darker, and his lips were not as full, but he was just as lovely,” Stephenie Meyer writes in New Moon. Elijah Wood is a popular suggestion, since Jane and Alec are small in stature, but I doubt that the man who starred in the Lord of the Rings trilogy would want to be backburner in a Twilight sequel. Then again, if Weitz (or the director of any future Twilight sequels) wanted to go off-book and flesh out the fascinating Volturi and their guard with Meyer’s approval, I don’t think anyone would mind. (Right?) Also, what is Elijah Wood doing these days?
Assuming Wood is out, I submit High School Musical’s Lucas Grabeel (pictured) for consideration. He might be a bit too tall to pair with Fanning, but they could always have him stand/walk in a shallow hole/trench. (Really, he’s not going to be onscreen that long for it to become a huge inconvenience.) To me, Grabeel’s face is angelic, but also blank — perfect for a character who is able to cut off all your senses and make you feel absolutely nothing. Together, he and Fanning (character gift: to bring the pain) would be appropriately off-putting. Plus, they’d look so cute together.

OMG if you stare at Dakota’s and Lucas’s faces they do look awfully similar! Like that is seriously intense,, l never noticed that in a way they look like twins. But I am confused,, when I read new moon l imagined Jane like a tad older and short. hahh idkk maybe l read it wrong but it would be interesting to see dakota in new moon l am just worried that each movie is going to get more like celebrities that will remind me of the movies they are famous for..and yeah l love that like how twilight had like actors that were known but not like “disney” or like those kind of actors.

I think the best person for Jane would be Anna Sophia Robb. She has those large eyes and she can play the creepy part perfect. There is a picture on her imdb with Hilary Swank in the Reaping and she is in the background and she just has that empty look to her eyes.

all of a sudden, there’s soo many celebraties who want to be in the twilight saga movies, but manyy of them are not right for it… they’ll just ruin the moviee!!
They should cast Elle Fanning, Dakota’s younger sister, shes 10, but accomplished, has had lots of experience and the look that is required.
Ok I pictured Jane and Alec to be around 18-20ish. They are young, but they are adults. The Volturi doesn’t want people becoming vampires when they are too young. Even Edward being 17 was questionable for Carlisle he said. I’m not sure about the choices above…maybe Dakota could pull off Jane. I can totally see her being the creepy little b***h that Jane is. IDK. Only time will tell.

Oh, for Christ sake. Who the hell keeps nominating all these freaking Disney kids. I don’t think he would be a good Alec. I would expect him to start dancing and break into song, during the movie.The actor has to be the same age as Dakota. I seriously hope this is a lie, just like Vanessa.If Dakota doesn’t get it, Jodelle Ferland would be awesome.She’s the same age as Dakota, and can pull of being creepy. Like I said before, she was in “The Messenger” with Kristen and was in Silent Hill. She has big eyes and what do you know, she has brown hair. She looks innocent, but does have a creepiness in her. It’s hard to imagine who would be Alec. I think they should just stick to some unknown actor.
I doubt Dakota will get the part of Jane. I think their going to find unknowns again. Lets hope so. I dont want hollywood or Disney jumping on Twilights band wagon. I have nothing against Dakota, she seems like a good actress but Id rather keep with the working formula of hiring unknowns.
In the book, Bella describes what is happening in the chamber with the other Volturi and she says something about Jane and another characters reaction to her and she calls Jane a “little girl”……I think maybe Dakota is past the age of being a “little girl”…..I like the low key nature of Twilight and feel New Moon could get lost in the Celeb hype before it is ever off the ground if big, big names come marching on. I don’t want the original characters to be overshadowed by top name actors…..just my opinion though.
What about Field Cate(plays young Ned in Pushing Daisies.) He’s only 12 years old. I don’t know what you guys think, but theres another actor you guys can consider.

I would prefer twin NOBODYS than those tw0o. Lucas is way to old. I think they should look about 15 but with babyish, angelic features and they should be twins.
I can honestly say that I like both Elijah and Lucas and (unlike Vanessa) I think Lucas is a Disney star that can handle being a badass.
How about Freddy Highmore with Dakota, they are both so talented, they’d be perfect.
I’m okay with Dakota as Jane, even though I thought Jane and Alec weren’t quite teens, but now thanks to Lee’s suggestion of Jodelle Ferland, I think she would make a great Jane too. I really like her look.

I agree with NO DISNEY ACTORS/ACTRESSES!!! Was it Aro who said that he had to change them because they were going to be burned at the stake for witchcraft and that he was hoping that they would get a little older (how much older? 5 or 10 yrs? who knows.). Anyway, I can picture that these two Volturi twins would be as young as 10 maybe 12 yrs old. AnnaSpohia would be another very good choice as Jane too. Field Cat–he’s a very little boy. Would be he allowed some weeks in Italy from Pushing Daisies? Dakota or AnnaSophia would play very well with Freddie Highmore, but I think he is filming right now. There’s a possiblity he wouldn’t be able to be Alec. If anyone can find a little girl that is the same age as Field (and Field is “ok’d” for the filming) great! Perfect match! Elijah Wood is in post-production on a movie…perhaps he could play one of the Volturi …nah!

Anna Sophia Robb & Jeremy Sumpter would go really well together. But Dakota Fanning is a great actresses pecially for her age.. She can pull it off…Check out Freddie Highmore…just throwing it out there.
and for the record thank goodness vanessa hudgens isn’t going into the Twilight world. I would hold a boycott!!!
Jodelle Ferland would be a much better choice to play Jane than Dakota Fanning or Anna Sophia Robb. Jodelle has the look of Jane - she is Jane.
I don’t think anyone will “ruin the movie!” at all. Dakota Fanning would do it justice, I’m sure. Look at all the hoopla over Rob being cast as Edward, now everyone loves him. Are there better actors or others we’d like to see in the role? Sure. But I don’t think you could go wrong with Dakota. And if they did offer her the role outright, she’ll probably get it. I think Elijah Wood is too old to play Alec, but that’s just my opinion.

I actually think Dakota would make a fabulous Jane. She’s a very talented actress, and would play the part wonderfully.
My personal choice of actors would be Jodelle Ferland for Jane and Hero Fiennes Tiffin for Alec. They both have the right look about them and I would place them as being about the right age for the parts. Dakota would be a good but I feel she’s a little old?

I can’t think of anyone else to play Alec except Freddie Highmore. It would be great if he could play Alec. (Random) I always thought he played Simon in Nanny McPhee, but i went on imdb and it is actually Thomas Sangster. They sure do look alike.
I think Dakota Fanning and Anna Sophia Robb look pretty much the same to me- idk if thats just me. But I did picture Jane as a cross between Dakota Fanning and Jodelle Ferland somewhere at the age of 11-14. No younger though, for the twins, because if the Volturi were so opposed to immortal children, why would they make them themselves? If they did then I say HYPOCRITES! ha lol.

Annasophia robb has been my pick for jane from the beginning because she looks like a good jane and she can be creepy like in the reaping! but that jodelle girl could be could, wrong hair colour but she’s got the right sort of face and she has worked with Kstew before on the messengers. connor paolo might be good, or thirteen year old jordan orr. I think Rhiannon Fish should play Leah Clearwater. She may live in Australia but she has an American accent, and she is really good and has plenty of acting experience.
I agree with Dakota as Jane, I think she has enough skill as an actress to be able to be frigthening enough. If they do pick her I think that Alec should be Liam Aiken who stared as Klaus in Lemony Snicket’s Series of Unfortunate Events or possible Skyander Keyes from C.S Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia! But I think Liam would be great for the part
Too bad Cameron Bright is older now. He would have been good as Alec. And you know he can play those evil rolls. Maybe he is still young enough looking?? He has that angelic face for sure …….. and those eyes !!!!
I really hope they don’t go with Dakota, have nothing against her but would love to see an unknown, aspiring actress play Jane. I love how Twilight brought us beautiful new faces and talent, esp. Rob’s! Never heard of the other kid.
at first i thought Dakota Fanning was wrong for the part, but after seeing that picture i’m starting to warm up to her. as far as alec, lucas grabeel i dont think is right. we need someone who is relatively unknown, my vote is for the blonde kid who was in that movie the seeker and is gonna be in disney’s new witch mountain movie.
i think this is just a publicity stunt because dakota is in “push” due out early february from guess who!?! summit entertainment. jane is not even in new moon that much…unless dakota is a fellow twilighter (c’mon who doesn’t want to be in the movie to spend a few moments with the cullens lol)
Either Dakota Fanning or Annasophia Robb would do fine - I love both of their acting and I think their looked both fit the role.
What REALLY bothers me though is that everyone is shunning Lucas out just because he started off with a Disney movie. If you look at his roles after his “break” (aka HSM) he has chosen some pretty good ones, including Milk. He has talent, and just because he was in HSM doesn’t mean he lacks it either. Sorry, but I hate the steoreotype. I agree with the age, it might not fit, but all the talent stereotype…geez, sorry, but make them stop!
Oh for goodness sakes.. What ever happen to getting actors and actresses who aren’t main stream? You know bring the character to life… not making us remember what the actor did before they played this role. Focus on the Character not the actor….Plus low budget = limited mainstream actors. Unless they are going to up the budget.
Who ever is coming up with the casting ideas —- Needs to go less mainstream and get more creative.
I think first Stephanie Meyers need to put an age to all the Volturi vampires so people can place there opinion on the cast better, because Jane and Alec may look young to Bella’s human eyes but may seem different to the other Characters in the book.

I love Dakota Fanning! I like the idea of her as Jane! I pictured them to be in their tweens/ early teens, since immortal children are not allowed.
For Alec they should cast Freddie Highmore! From all those Johnny Depp movies and August Rush! I LOVE that kid!!
I don’t get why people are giving different ages for Jane and Alec… they are the witch twins, hence they should be similar in age, appearance and clearly they are small and androgynous. I’m thinking the Volturi took Alec and Jane while they were teens. They’d be young and impressionable and ready to mold.

Erica, you wouldn’t have to worry about Field Cate not being able to get some time off from Pushing Daisies, since it’s been canceled. But like I said, He’s only 12. Jane and Alec should be in their Pre-teens.10-12 years old. In the book, Jane and Alec are descirbed as little children. If some of you are a fan of Dakota, but think she is a bit to old, she does have a younger sister. I think her name is Elle. She was in “The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button”Well it would be interesting to see who will play Jane and Alec

Like I said before, if they can’t get Dakota, they could go for her younger sister.She pretty much looks like Dakota, when she was younger. I really don’t like the idea of Dakota Fanning. I don’t know I just don’t want to see her in this movie (& therefore in the rest.) She really just is not how I pictured Jane.
I loved Lucas in HSM. He was great but I think he’s too old for Alec. (Or else I would love to see him in Twilight.)

I agree with most of the people here. 1. Dakota Fanning - is a definite no no - i don’t really rate her as an actress, there is just something about her. And 2 NOT ANOTHER HSM actor/actress first is was Vanessa Hudgens and now Lucas Grabeel - this isn’t a disney film. i am so worried i going to watch the next film and find the Volturi singing ‘We’re all in this together’

I agree with Gatchpatch. Too many suggestions here offer up the High School Musical version of Twilight. Vanessa, Lucas and all their buddies need to find another vehicle for their next work and stop trying to ride the Twilight wave. Not everyone going to see the Twilight films is 12 years old!
Get serious actors who can play the parts and appeal to the wide audience these books have grabbed. NO Vanessa, No Lucas, No Corbin, No America Ferrera (not HSM, but also not right for Emily).
On another note, let’s hope that the director tries his best to get actual Native American actors/actresses to play the parts of the Quileutes.

I think they should stick with mostly unknowns for this series — it makes it more interesting, plus gives someone trying to “make it” a great break and chance! Keep it from getting tainted by making it Hollywood-ish, I say! I have to admit, I actually pictured Jane as dark haired for some reason.
I read that this was a PR move by Summit so Dakota could talk up New Moon while she’s out promoting PUSH also a Summit movie. They should cast young looking, young adults because 14 year olds can change a LOT in one short year and if they get to BD it could be two years and Jane and Alec have a big part in that one.

I know she isn’t the first person who comes to mind but I think Ellen Page would make a good Jane. I also think Dakota Fanning would do well but if you’ve ever seen Hard Candy, you would know that Ellen Page would kick butt in this role. As for Alec, I think Liam Aiken should have the role.
