Entertainment Weekly Popwatch – ‘Twilight’: If Dakota Fanning is Jane, who should be Alec?

With news that Dakota Fanning will meet with New Moon director Chris Weitz next week to formally discuss her being offered the role of vampire Jane in the Twilight sequel, it’s time for us to help Weitz find his Alec, Jane’s bloodsucker brother. According to the books, Alec is a pale boy (surprise) who could be Jane’s twin. “His hair was darker, and his lips were not as full, but he was just as lovely,” Stephenie Meyer writes in New Moon. Elijah Wood is a popular suggestion, since Jane and Alec are small in stature, but I doubt that the man who starred in the Lord of the Rings trilogy would want to be backburner in a Twilight sequel. Then again, if Weitz (or the director of any future Twilight sequels) wanted to go off-book and flesh out the fascinating Volturi and their guard with Meyer’s approval, I don’t think anyone would mind. (Right?) Also, what is Elijah Wood doing these days?

Assuming Wood is out, I submit High School Musical’s Lucas Grabeel (pictured) for consideration. He might be a bit too tall to pair with Fanning, but they could always have him stand/walk in a shallow hole/trench. (Really, he’s not going to be onscreen that long for it to become a huge inconvenience.) To me, Grabeel’s face is angelic, but also blank — perfect for a character who is able to cut off all your senses and make you feel absolutely nothing. Together, he and Fanning (character gift: to bring the pain) would be appropriately off-putting. Plus, they’d look so cute together.

With Dakota Fanning in mind (she has not yet been confirmed by Summit) who does look enough like her to play Alec? Can you think of anyone besides the suggestion above? I can’t.

Hero Fiennes-Tiffen would be a good candidate for Alec. He’s only 10 years old. Like I said before, if they can’t get Dakota, they could go for her younger sister.She pretty much looks like Dakota, when she was younger. Most of you have pretty good choices for Alec, but the sad thing is that most of them would be perfect, but they are all around 17-20 years old now. If only they would have made Twilight a few years earlier, when they all would be the appropiate age and be perfect for the role. Oh well. Please Chris listen to the fans. We don’t want really famous actors. Stick with the unknown actors. PLEASE!

I seriously hope that they don’t cast Dakota or Lucas for these roles. No offense, but I like the idea of going with unknown actors. There is absolutely NO NEED to bring big names into this film. It will totally ruin it!

Dakota will do fine as Jane and a agree Jeremy Sumpter should play Alec … not!!!!!!!!!!Lucas he is tooooooo old for the part and ugly!

I agree with the Anna Sophia Rob idea. She is amazing and I think she could pull of an amazing Jane. I’m on edge about the idea of Freddie Highmore, he’s too sweet.

NOO! NOT HSM!! PLEASEEEE!! …Sorry I just really hate it, I couldn’t stand someone from THAT being associated with Twilight!! That honestly can’t happen seriously!! I know I would love the movie anyway, but that would just take something away from it… Sorry guys.

But Dakota Fanning for Jane and Elijah is okay for Alec… I suppose..

Now Dakota would be good too but she’s not my #1 pick

and also everyone who keeps suggesting Freddie Highmore please stop. The vampires are supposed to be god-like and this kid looks like an ugly one. Sorry but IMO he is not good looking enough.

And people take a chill pill ok. Remember way back when when a lot of us did not want Rob as Edward and look at him now =D he’s almost perfect for the part and he played Edward quite well in Twilight hopefully he’ll get better in the next one but either way I LOVE him ;P

Wow, I can’t see him in the role especially with Dakota.

But if they pick Dakota I really feel they HAVE been seeing what the fans think cause so many of us have been pushing Dakota! THat is great tht they do care how we feel.

I really don’t like the idea of Dakota Fanning. I don’t know I just don’t want to see her in this movie (& therefore in the rest.) She really just is not how I pictured Jane.

I loved Lucas in HSM. He was great but I think he’s too old for Alec. (Or else I would love to see him in Twilight.)

I really think they need to go with UNKNOWNS.I don’t want a bunch of people now jumping on the Twilight bandwagon. Plus that was one thing I really liked about Twilight.

NO Dakota Please!

I agree with most of the people here. 1. Dakota Fanning – is a definite no no – i don’t really rate her as an actress, there is just something about her. And 2 NOT ANOTHER HSM actor/actress first is was Vanessa Hudgens and now Lucas Grabeel – this isn’t a disney film. i am so worried i going to watch the next film and find the Volturi singing ‘We’re all in this together’

Olive skinned doesn’t mean that they are black. I am olive skinned and I’m Spanish. Anyways Dakota would be good…She has the acting ability and would be a good addition to the new moon cast. and who they pick for Alec..so be it.

I am ok with dakota as Jane, she’s a very talented actress… But I have to agree- her younger sister does look better for the part…

If they are using dakota- maybe Logan Lerman could be her twin? obviously if they used her younger sister they’d need a younger twin..

at first, i was like NO dakota! that would suck…. but now i think maybe she might be able to pull it off.

As for Lucas: firstly i want to say how against the whole disney stars in twilight thing. But actually, i think he might be able to pull it off too. (SOOO glad hudgens is not in it!) So i think Lucas would be ok.

I think Anna Sophia Robb would be pretty good…. but I think both grils could bring sonething to the character and dakotya just came out with that one movie that she can do stuff with her mind, so that would help! But i don’t think that lucas would be that great, and that would give them more of a reason to cast vanessa, because they are close, and I REALLY don’t want her in the movie!

Yes I agree with Jermey Sumpter or Alex Pettyfer because they could be awesome as Alec. I really don’t think HSM is for New Moon though but Lucas is better than having Vanessa on the movie. ugh. I hope they do a better job at casting this time!!

I agree with Gatchpatch. Too many suggestions here offer up the High School Musical version of Twilight. Vanessa, Lucas and all their buddies need to find another vehicle for their next work and stop trying to ride the Twilight wave. Not everyone going to see the Twilight films is 12 years old!
Get serious actors who can play the parts and appeal to the wide audience these books have grabbed. NO Vanessa, No Lucas, No Corbin, No America Ferrera (not HSM, but also not right for Emily).
On another note, let’s hope that the director tries his best to get actual Native American actors/actresses to play the parts of the Quileutes.

I think they should stick with mostly unknowns for this series — it makes it more interesting, plus gives someone trying to “make it” a great break and chance! Keep it from getting tainted by making it Hollywood-ish, I say! I have to admit, I actually pictured Jane as dark haired for some reason.

I read that this was a PR move by Summit so Dakota could talk up New Moon while she’s out promoting PUSH also a Summit movie. They should cast young looking, young adults because 14 year olds can change a LOT in one short year and if they get to BD it could be two years and Jane and Alec have a big part in that one.

ya i do not think that Dakota should play jane. She just does not seem right for the part. For Alec i think Jeremy Sumpter should play his role in New Moon.

I think Dakota Fanning is perfect for Jane, and that’s just my personal opinion. I think Haley Joel Osment Would be an awesome person to play Alec. I really hope they don’t pick some “High School musical” guy to play him…..

I know she isn’t the first person who comes to mind but I think Ellen Page would make a good Jane. I also think Dakota Fanning would do well but if you’ve ever seen Hard Candy, you would know that Ellen Page would kick butt in this role. As for Alec, I think Liam Aiken should have the role.

Okay so if they cast Dakota, my vote for Alec would have to go to Thomas Sangster (he played Sam in Love Actually… he’s older then her but baby faced enough to not have it be an issue and he’s tall but they can work around that)

I DEFINITELY agree that Elijah Wood should play Alec!!!! He’d be perfect! And he isn’t going to be in any other movies that I know of any time soon so it would work!!!! And Dakota Fanning is a great choice cuz if you look at the picture above she looks totally creepy and older than she really is… weird…. so ya!
