FANS CAMPAIGN TO SAVE FORKS HIGH SCHOOL BUILDING
In an article in Peninsula Daily News it says:
“Fans of the Twilight series of best-selling books wants to save the place where Bella and Edward met — Forks High School.”
But we all know that Forks High School is more than that, it’s also a place of many memorable scenes, such as: seeing the Cullens for the first time, Edward’s first rescue of Bella, Bella’s gym class fiascos and the prom.
Sadly, parts of the High School’s 1925 brick building have been condemned and are no longer open for classes.

In honor of Bella’s Birthday, which which is being celebrated in Forks (CLICK HERE) an appeal has been submitted this week for a bond measure to replace the school building on the Nov. 4 general election ballot. Although there is no guarantee, donations are also being accepted to help save the building.

Wow. When I was there in August, no one said anything about this, even the tour guide. I don’t know how I feel about it. On one hand, its an historic building: 1925 is quite old. It still has the old name of Quillayute High School etched above the door instead of Forks High School. That kind of history should be preserved. And yes, even though Stephenie didn’t have an idea of what the high school looked like when she wrote Twilight, she did after that when she had visited Forks to look around & see all the landmarks she’d written of. Plus for Twilighters to donate a small amount to the town many of them have visited, or want to visit, doesn’t seem like much to ask (especially when the town bends over backward to welcome and accomodate fans).
At the same time, I understand the town’s need to provide a safer, more modern environment for students. Do we, as a fanbase, have a right to ask they keep an unsafe building standing simply because that’s the way it was when the series was written?
I’m torn, especially after the article said they cannot guarantee the donations will go toward preserving the school. What do other TAers think?
I’m sorry, but this is nuts. The kids who actually live in Forks and attend the high school deserve a school that’s not falling down around them while they study. And the residents of Forks shouldn’t have to pay higher taxes just because a school that’s used as a fake setting in a book has become derelict and some fans who’ve never gone their in their lives cant’ bear the thought. Edward isn’t real, but the people of Forks are. Why can’t we just leave them alone and let them go about their lives?
