FORBES: HOLLYWOOD’S 10 MOST POWERFUL VAMPIRES

Posted August 3rd, 2009 By: Team Switzerland 14 Comments »

It’s no question that vampires are bigger than ever and Forbes is definitely recognizing that. They’ve taken the time to list Hollywood’s 10 most powerful vampires in film and on TV, and unsurprisingly, our very own Edward Cullen made the list. Unfortunately, Edward didn’t come in at #1, but he did come in at an impressive #5, being beaten out only by Bill Compton, Angel, Spike, and Blade. According to Forbes, rankings were based on television ratings, inflation-adjusted box office performance, and presence in popular culture through blog and press mentions since 1979.

#5: Edward Cullen

As the love interest of Bella Swan in the commercially successful Twilight film, Edward Cullen plays a permanently 17-year-old vampire. The Summit Entertainment movie, which is the first of three planned, became a sensation. It reaped $191 million at the domestic box office, marking the first big success of independent film studio Summit Entertainment.

I’ve never actually been a big fan of vampires aside from Twilight, and even now I’m not too familiar with other vampire stories. I think it’s pretty great that Edward landed on the list, although I’m a bit surprised he wasn’t higher. What do you think of the vampires on the list? Are you surprised at Edward at #5?

I cannot believe Bill Compton beat Edward! Edward is EVERYWHERE! Usually Forbes is pretty spot on, but I have to disagree in this instance.

  • 08ertwilighter

the list is alright, though i would’ve figured edward (and, for that matter, THE COUNT) would’ve come in before blade and angel, but that might just be me…

  • trudie

you really must be kidding, right.why dont we live in the present.

  • weni

Ok..the vampires on the list we’re all pretty OK..but I have to disagree with Bill Compton VS Edward Cullen, on being #1. I have watched TB and I have to say this..but Edward is still #1

  • Chris

As far as vampires go, Edward is the least vampirey of the vamps. Even the Count is more of a vampire. Ha Ha. I guess it’s because the focus in Twilight is “Love” and not really blood – although in the book it’s more of a wrestling match between loving her and wanting to kill Bella. However onscreen it’s love, love, love.

I can’t believe that Spike beat out Edward Cullen. What is wrong with Forbes? Some of the people on the list shouldn’t even be there.

  • Jess

I think that this list is alright. Even though twilight is a huge phenomenon, we have to remembe that there have been many a vampire before him! I also watch true blood, and love it. and i think that twilighters are forgetting that just because WE aren’t in love with other vamps doesnt mean other people arent! I am surprised that Spike from BUffy beat out Edward, but then again Buffy was also a cult following, less than a decade ago, so again, forbes is looking at it from a span of almost 20 years. For edward to be only like 4 years old in literature, i think thats pretty good to land #5!!

Angel and Spike are my favorite vampires in the TV world. Edward and Louis are my favorite in the Book world. They all belong on the list.

    • Bangel4ever

I agree that Angel and Spike are best. Are you a spuffy person or a Bangel person? I’m a Bangel person myself.

OK, this could be a touchy subject.

The fact that Forbes Magazine, iconic publication of the God aka Money, saw fit to publish a list of “Most Powerful Vampires” is a clear indicator of the buckets of money pouring in from this genre.

Vamps have always been reliable sources for books and films. Anne Rice was the undisputed queen of modern vamp stories until Stephenie Meyer knocked everyone clear out of the ring with one punch from the Twilight Saga. Even with the likes of Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Buffy and Angel, the vamp world did not soar into the stratosphere until Bella and Edward came onto the scene. And, from the looks of it, it is still on an upward arc.

I love Bella and Edward. But, they don’t really compare to the other vampires. I have never seen even a partial episode of Buffy or any of her spinoffs. Nor have I seen any of the big screen adaptations of the other vamp stories. Vampires just weren’t part of my world until I came to know Twilight. I have been educating myself at a rapid pace.

I was then introduced to Bill Compton. I’m not talking of Bill Compton of the HBO series TrueBlood, but, the Bill Compton from the Sookie Stackhouse books by Charlaine Harris. Yes, the TV show is based on the books, but, the difference in the two is simply day and night. I have said before, I am not a fan of the TV show. It has diverted from the books in such a manner as to be blasphemous in my mind. That said, Book Bill is correctly the #1 vamp. He is a more traditional vampire than Edward. He drinks blood, though he tries to exist on the synthetic blood found in the books. He was a good man before he was changed to a vamp, and as much as Edward Cullen is a ‘good vampire’, so is Bill Compton. His heart does not beat, but he is as capable of love the same as Edward. Yes, I’m talking love and passion, not just sex. Book Bill is the sexiest, smoothest, most alluring, most addictive vampire I have become acquainted with. And, I even feel safe saying, he is one of my favorite fictional characters EVER.

Even though both are vampires, I feel safe in saying to compare Edward Cullen and Bill Compton is the proverbial apples and oranges dilemma. They are just too disparate.

So, to date, though Edward Cullen has only been showcased in one movie, the movie New Moon will certainly cause his stock to rise. The subsequent Twilight movies can only add fuel to that fire, and rightly so. HBO will undoubtedly pour more money into their piece of the vampire pie to help further their ratings race. We may see a shift in the line up of the ‘power vamps’, if the money train continues to roll, you can be sure this won’t be the last time we see this list.

I love Edward, but I just can’t help but agree, Book Bill Compton is #1.

Ummm, Edward? In #5? He belongs in #1! Im starting a riot against Forbes!

  • http://twilightersanonymous Marianne

HHMMM Edward at #5…. I don’t think so. I know everyone has their own preferences, so I put Edward at #1, for sure.
The others….not even close. Book Bill maybe..close.. but TV Bill ugh!

    So there, it’s settled, Edward at #1….right Twi-Mom ????

  • meg

Creamy, I agree with you :)
Bill Compton is def the #1 vampire! True Blood is an awesome show, and the books are addictive.

Remember, all of us love Edward, but there are loooots of people who don’t.

Gotta love how the author said, “I’ve never actually been a big fan of vampires aside from Twilight, and even now I’m not too familiar with other vampire stories.”
Then says, ” I think it’s pretty great that Edward landed on the list, although I’m a bit surprised he wasn’t higher.”

Well, maybe if you wee familiar with other vampire stories you’d be asking yourself who paid off whom to allow Edward to be so close to number #1.
Wdward is to vampires what Hannah Montana is to music.
Sure, the little teenager girls go crazy for it, but in a few years no one will remember Edward was even a thing.
The other vampires on the list are iconic. Edward’s a pop culture flash in the pan.
