GIRLFRIEND MAGAZINE: NEW INTERVIEW WITH ROBERT PATTINSON

Posted May 7th, 2009 By: Team Switzerland 13 Comments »

Girlfriend Magazine, a New Zealand publication, has a short but sweet new interview with Twilight star Robert Pattinson. Robert talks about how he feels he’s living up to the high standards of his character, the amazing chemistry between him and co-star Kristen Stewart, how often he gets spotted by fans, and more:

GF: Your hair’s shorter; how come?

Robert: I cut it because I’m a rebel. It’s one of those crazy things. The studio was always like, “The fans don’t want to see you messy.” I’m like, “I don’t care.” Then as soon as one of the fans said, “I like how messy he looks” they came back to me and were like, “Okay. You have to be messy all the time. Never stop being messy.”

It used to look like a sculpture!

That’s why I wanted to cut it off. As soon as people started calling it my “trademark”, it’s like, OK, time to get rid of it.

GF: The novels regularly mention how beautiful Edward is, so how do you feel about living up to that?

Robert: It’s funny! Like last year, if I wanted to chat somebody up, I had to go all out, and then this year, I look exactly the same and the walls have just changed overnight! It’s like you just need someone to say, “This guy’s attractive,” and then everyone believes it!

GF: Did you have sizzlin’ chemistry with Kristen Stewart when you first met her?

Robert: I wanted to do the movie because of her. It was like the first job that I wanted to do in ages. Having Kristen there, I thought that it could be something more than just another film, because of the way she was in the audition and because of her track record of making really good film choices.

GF: What about the rumour that you proposed to her on the set?

Robert: I don’t know where that came from. It’s like, “When did I propose to her?” [laughs]. Someone asked me that and I thought, “Did I? Maybe I did.” That’s pretty extreme. That’s really getting into character. I might have proposed to a bunch of other people too.

That used to be my favourite chat-up line when I was younger. You just go straight up to a person and say, “Will you marry me? I don’t want to mess around” [laughs].

GF: What kind of reaction would you get?

Robert: None!

GF: Have you ever fallen in love with the wrong kind of girl in real life?

Robert: Yeah, anybody can fall in love with the wrong person. Plus, I generally like people who have, like, a dark side. I generally like people who are a little bit crazy.

GF: You’ve mentioned in interviews that you’re a bit of a loner yourself.

Robert: There are just very few people who I think are worth the time. Like, I don’t like talking on the phone; I can’t really maintain relationships with people who don’t want to come hang out with me. Plus I’m always moving around. I don’t really see the point most of the time.

GF: How often do you get recognised on the street these days?

Robert: I’ve been getting recognised from this [Twilight] since I finished shooting. It’s crazy. It was the day that I got back to LA, and it’s almost every single day since then that there’s someone who spots me.

GF: Does it make you uncomfortable?

Robert: I mean, I don’t normally go to shopping centres and stuff and those are the places it happens. But I’ve been uncomfortable in crowds my whole life. I’ve always felt that everyone is looking at me [laughs]. So this doesn’t make any difference. I could be in a supermarket and have a full-on panic attack when there’s no one else there. And this was even like five years ago, when nobody knew who I was!

This might be the wrong profession for you then![Laughs] I know.

GF: So how prepared were you for the Twilight phenomenon?

Robert: I wasn’t really prepared at all. It still gets bigger and bigger every single week. I have no idea. I always think that I can still just go back to London and sort of disappear, but it might be too late for that!

The whole hair topic always gives me a good laugh. I do agree with Rob, though – his hair definitely got too much attention and I think once he cut it, the hype surrounding it died down (after the internet blew up over his haircut, that is). And it’s always interesting to hear what Rob has to say about his audition process, because it makes me think of who may have been cast had Kristen not drawn Rob into the project.

What did you think of this interview? Were you surprised at anything Rob said? What about the hair topic – are you still mesmerized by it or are you sick of the topic by now?

A very interesting interview…nothing I haven’t heard before. However, Rob needs to try meditation..it can calm your nerves and give you peace of mind. Easier to cope with his crazy life, he would be surprised! Meditation thru yoga.

He such a great guy. Many people like myself will never know what he goes through on a daily basis with all the fame “Twilight” has given him.Especially has shy as he is it must be overwhelming. But it must be his destiny and you get what you ask for in life. You have to overcome and adapt.Stay true to yourself and be yourself.

Good interview. I loved all the joking around about his hair and the proposals. As a star, I like him a lot: He’s just everything but a diva. You can tell that he isn’t an actor for the fame; he’s an actor for the sake of acting! And he’s a pretty talented as well. I can relate with him on the «uncomfortable in crowds thing». I know what the feeling is like and trust me it can be very horrible to feel as if everyone is looking at you and judging you when you’re surronded by strangers. I know it, I lived it. So I do sympathize. It must not be easy for him since he’s so famous and he have to handle it all the time. I honestly wish he could get away from it because he doesn’t seem to apreciate all this frenzy going on about him. I’m trying to put myself in his shoes and i wouldn’t like it either… If I ever see him in the street (which I really doubt is possible since I live in the East of Canada…!) I’ll simply pass my way… giving him some air.

This article brightened my day. =) Robert is such a great guy, I found it interesting that he’s attracted to people who have a “darker-side” and the panic attacks in the market. I haven’t heard him say this before. I’ve been a paranoid mess myself, it’s reassuring to know that I’m not the only nutcase in this world. I guess with all the information given in this article, Robert Pattinson and I have a lot more in common than I thought.

I think by now we have all heard the questions that Girlfriend Magazine have ask him in other interviews, they seem so familiar to me, because I already knew what Rob’s answer would be. Sorry Alie, I could not simply pass him by in the street, I would not run up to him screaming of course or chase him, but I would have to acknowledge him at least, I would approach him, quietly and without too much fuss, there is no way I would ever just let him pass by, I would regret that big time if I did, I mean that is a once in a life time chance. I think he has been very good with all his fans posing for photos and giving autographs, I think it’s the screaming and chasing ones he is scared of…

I like how they told him fans don’t want to see him messy and he said he didn’t care and fan were like whatever I like him messy! I’m one of them! Yeah I’m glad the hair thing died down! I think he looks good with it short or long! He so cute…..

  • Ann Phelan

He needs to work..that will be his calm and his center. His escape will be his music, his reading and family. He is a unique and complex man and I adore his in character and out. Respect

  • Deanne North

It’s ashame in a way for him. I hope things work out for him. I wouldn’t like people watching my every move either. It sucks, but that comes with the job. I guess it’s kind of like when Gone With the Wind came out. You had tons of people following Vivian Leigh and Clark Gable around. Back then it was a big thing.

The only famous person I have ever come across was Jeremy Miller the guy who played Ben on Growing Pains. He was on the same tram as me exiting Disneyland. I said hi and that was about it. I didn’t freak out either.

I guess if it were Johnny Depp okay than I might’ve had an anxiety attack. I wouldn’t go disturbing him either. If he or anyone like that wanted to actually talk to me fine.

well he looks hot either way, ad rob nonoe is laiguhtign at ok(mabye theose dman ahters) but I we all voe you here!

I know Rob will be glad when he’s out the limelight and able to have a “normal” life but normal is relative. I’d settle for not being mobbed and questioned ad infinitum. It has to be so exhausting!! I hope he can continue to handle the fame with the same modesty and levelheadedness as he has so far. Things will eventually calm down. I think, as an adoring fan, thatI can control myself if ever I happen upon him in the streets of Memphis. I was five feet from John Bon Jovi in New Orleans last weekend and didn’t take pictures or harass him at all. Maybe I’ll just say hi and invite him for a microbrew at my favorite local pub, Boscos. I’ll try anyway!

  • RachelCullen

Parts of this interview seems so familiar. Like the end and beginning; totally reminds me of the one from January in the Australian Girlfriend. Although, I do think that it is different. But yeah.
I just love how humbe he is, like, just coz he’s successful doesn’t mean that he’s stuck-up or anything.
I love him. And no matter what anyone says, I love Rob not just because he’s Edward.

  • Ashley
