INSTYLE: FASHION DESIGNERS SKETCH BELLA’S WEDDING DRESS

Posted August 24th, 2009 By: Team Switzerland 35 Comments »

With Eclipse in full production and the hopes of Breaking Dawn in the future, InStyle has taken it upon themselves to wrangle some of the top designers in fashion to reinvent Bella’s potential wedding dress and sketch out their visions for it. They’ve gotten everyone from Christian Siriano, Monique Lhuillier, Erin Fetherston, Brian Reyes, Max Azria, Prabal Gurung, Lela Rose, Badgley Mischka, and Zac Posen designing their own dress for Bella and the sketch gallery is amazing. Below you’ll find a preview of the sketches (featuring Christian Siriano’s gown) and a few quotes from Eclipse and Breaking Dawn which remind us of what the dress is supposed to look like:

In Eclipse, Bella’s dress is described as an early 1900s design (which complements her antique engagement ring) with friend and Maid of Honor Alice Cullen’s modern tweaks to the train and veil. “You look like you just stepped out of an Austen movie,” Bella’s mother says to the bride-to-be when she spies her in the gown in the final book, Breaking Dawn. “It’s gorgeous! So graceful, so elegant.”

View all of the dress sketches from each designer here.

How do you feel about the sketches from each designer? Do you think any of the sketches match what Bella actually wore in the book? Which sketch is your favorite?

I really like the Monique Lhuillier and Lela Rose dresses!

  • Becky

I think Lela Rose’s is beautiful. And I definitely saw Bella’s dress somewhat like that. Oh. And Monique Lhullier’s dress is amazing. Those two sketches are the way I envisioned Bella’s dress.

  • twisneylove

i liked the dresses, but none of them match what Bella’s dress should look like. her dress cant be sleeveless, or show her back. i always picture her dress like the white dress Jane wears in the 2005 movie remake of “pride and prejudice”

  • M.

Christian Siriano’s dress is my favorite, though I don’t really think that Bella wore a dress like this in the book.

  • Judy Bradley

I think the Christian Siriano dress is closest to what I envisioned Bella’s dress, still maybe not as “open” as some of this one. Needs to fit the period spoken of in the book.

  • Savannah

    Monique Lhuillier’s dress is perfect.
Maybe a few tweaks to make it a little bit older but it’s a beautiful design.

Lela Rose’s dress was nice too.

  • Chelle

Monique Lhuillier’s dress is my first choice, second is Lela Rose. Wow, so the designers actually did these sketches based on the book? I’m impressed!

I didn’t understand Brian Reyes’ design?

  • http://twilightersanonymous Marianne

I like Lela Rose and 2nd Monique Lhuiller. Some are pretty impressive being they are done just from a discription and like Chelle I don’t get where some of them are coming from, just a little to odd for me.

i like Monique Lhuillier’s dress the best

  • BellaAnne8

Hands down the Monique Lhuillier’s dress is gorgeous, def. my favorite one. but the lela rose dress is a close second! its very elegant and has gorgeous detail. my third favorite dress is Christian’s dress. it would be great it it had no sleeves and less poofiness, a little Haute couture for Bella……Badgley’s dress is a little high fashinon and I don’t like the high neck. Max azria’s dress is okay but kind of looks like a straitjacket. Prabal’s dress is too modern, the red is not right. zac posens dress, is pink and too oldfashioned…over the top a little. Brian Reye’s dress is the worst..looks like a dress made out of paper bags…

  • Richelle

    My favorites are:
    1. Monique Lhuillier (perfect! just as I pictured it!)
    2. Lela Rose (love it! maybe too poofy though)
    3. Christian Siriano (very cute! I just love him anyways!)

The Brian Reyes and Zac Posen dresses were just ridiculous! The Prabal Gurung was too modern. The rest were close, but just missed the mark.

  • Betty

I agree that the Lela Rose and Monique Lhuillier dresses were beautiful. I also thought the Erin Fetherston dress had potential. The Brian Reyes dress????? was outrageous and disgusting. One of the others (I forget who the designer was) was more like a can can dress.

  • dancinnangel

I agree…The Monique Lhuillier is pretty much perfect – not surpirising because I think her style is perfect for designing Bella’s gown. She really knows how to do a modern take on a vintage dress, without seeming cliche. Altough the Lela Rose dress is very similar to Monique’s and also very pretty, I don’t think it should be off-white. I like Christian Siriano’s because it’s just a little bit more different without going too far. (I can see Alice looooving that one!) The Prabal Gurung design is beautiful but just too modern and revealing I think for Bella. I really like that InStyle got these big-name designers involved and it would be awesome if we get to see one of these dresses on the big screen!

  • Kate

i LOVED lela rose’s dress, it was magnificent!! none of the dresses, however, truly captured what i envisioned the wedding dress being in the book, but i suppose nothing will ever TRULY match what we envisioned of things from the book, since everyone’s imagination is different, resulting in completely different ideas of how things should look, i did think that many of the dresses were absolutely exquisite, but weren’t exactly fitting to the time period that was described of the dress, one dress though that completely threw me was Brian Reyes!?!?!?!?!? i’m not exactly the most artistic person on the planet, but when i saw that picture i didn’t even see a dress!!!!! it looked like a creepy mountain with a scary guitar on the top, it reminded me of that stupid picture where you have to look to see the old lady or the young woman, i literally looked at his sketch for 15 MINUTES and i still have yet to make out what in the heck that’s a picture of!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Cat

I also love the Lela Rose dress!
Brian Reyes? I couldn’t even tell where the head hole would go LOL

  • weni

MOnique Lhuillier’s design was the best!!!!2nd would be Lela Rose dress!!!!

  • Taun85

The Monique Lhuillier gown is amazing!!!!

  • Ashley

WOW. Very happy that most everyone is in agreement that Monique Lhullier absolutely captured what we envisioned Bella’s dress to be. The sketch took my breath away, without a doubt- it’s so perfect! I really hope that they design the wedding gown to look like this one for Kristen Stewart.. she will be so gorgeous. Lela Rose did a wonderful job also, the back is gorgeous and the lace top is perfect, but I wish I knew what the front looked like. Would be very pretty if it had some round pearls lining up her neck like ‘faux buttons’ on the lace collar.. can’t wait to see what they actually design. I hope it’s not pink or crazy bone colors or long grandma’s nighty design inspired!!! Good lord. Those were terrible.

  • Manu

    1st choice: Monique Lhuillier
    2nd choice: Lela Rose

  • Irishtwilighter

Oh My God, I cant believe wedding dresses are being discussed. I’m so excited. If I have to choose one Lela rose is my fav but if I’m honest none of them are what I’ve pictured in my head as a result of reading the book over & over. What ever the end product will be I’m totally sure Kristen will look fab. Of all scenes to be filmed I think I am looking forward to this one the most.

  • emmy

mmm, i liked the dresses, but none of them were like how i imagined bella to have worn in the book. maybe, probly the closest to it were max azria/lela rose, but WITHOUT THE HIGH NECK. so what if that WAS the fashion of the time, i still reckon it should be low cut and off the shoulder full-sleeves. yeah, and lacy, deff. yeah, ive like gotta sketch my idea and take a picture and post it on ta, coz otherwise NO-ONE will ever know what im talking about.

  • Inga

Prabal Gurung’s dress is gorgeous! But a bit too modern for Bella with that plunging backline. I like the Monique Lhullier gown the most for Bella. Although the Lela Rose one is very romantical:)

  • canuck mom

Some of the dresses are nice but not really something I would see Bella wearing for the wedding that is described in the book. The Erin Fetherston dress without all the lace and the second layer of skirt would look the best.

  • Renee

My favorites were Lela Rose and Monique Lhullier’s designs, closest to what I envisioned.

  • Catherine

Lela Rose’s, noi doubt about it!

  • Liz

My 2 favs were Lela Rose and Max Azeia… I like Monique Lhullier’s design except for the fact that its a mermaid style dress. In my mind that would just spell disaster with a klutz like Bella. Especially coming down stairs.

  • manunita06

My favorites were Max Ariza, Lela Rose and Chistian Siriano =]

  • Evensong

I also very much liked the Monique Lhullier and Lela Rose Designs. Very elegant, but with a classic look to them. I do have to say that the Lela Rose design looks most like the design described in the book.

It was described as having vintage lace, but being very sleek with a slight flare… “like an inverted calla lily”. Alice had the dress made with a vintage style, but knowing Alice, it is going to have her touches of sophisticated flare.

  • Areti

Monique Lhullier all the way, but in defense of the Brian Reyes dress, which I think would be really cool and high-fashion. I think it has a train, it’s a column dress with a strip going from the bust around the neck into what is probably a pleated collar with lots of different points. Does that make any sense to anyone else? lol

  • s3lagh

The bottom flared out at the train like an inverted Calla Lily. The sleeves need to be long as Bella could feel Jacobs hot skin through thee fabric when he grabbed her arms. There has to be a long line of pearl buttons down the back. The dress itself is very narrow showing off her figure. That said, Moniques is the closest to the book

  • taytg95

OMG! this wedding dress is AMAZING! i love it.

  • Aryn

Max Azria, by far, is the design closest to what I envisioned.
It captures the “Anne of Green Gables” look, while maintaining a certain quality of timelessness.

  • Audreanna

The dress I like the best Monquie’s dress.

  • http://www.popvoucher.co.uk/ Promotional Codes

I love your wedding dress. It looks so amazing. Thanks for sharing…

  • Aylahgehner

Ugh. None were quite right! Monique had a perfect veil, Lela had the perfect color, but I imagined long sleeves, all lace back, the high old-fashioned neckline, and I wanted it to be a very subtle mermaid style with a long train that fanned out. Everything is always better the way you picture it in the book.
