INTERVIEW MAGAZINE: MICHAEL WELCH ON THE SET OF ‘NEW MOON’

Posted June 26th, 2009 By: Team Switzerland 10 Comments »

Interview Magazine caught up with Michael Welch while on break between the second and third Twilight saga films, New Moon and Eclipse, to talk about his role as Mike Newton, cast bonding, how he now has to unfortunately deal with the paparazzi, and much more – he even says we will ‘go nuts’ for the film! Read below for more:

LM: When you went into Twilight, did you have any idea what a huge success it would become?

MW: No, none of us had any clue that it would turn into—well, what it has. I originally went in auditioning for Edward, because that’s sort of how it works: Your representatives always send you out for the lead first, and then you work backwards from there. So then I auditioned for Eric, and then finally with Mike. I went in probably four or five times, but the last time we all read together it just clicked. It just felt right.

LM: Had you read the books before you went in there?

MW: No, I hadn’t. Frankly, I had never heard of the series—but I certainly did afterwards! I’m reading one book one at a time.

LM: But don’t you want to know what happens?

MW: I don’t like to get too ahead of the story. So far I’ve only read the first two. Although we’re going to be shooting the third one pretty soon, so I need to get on that.

LM: But the third one is where the story starts to get really crazy.

MW: Right! Apparently there’s a vampire war, and the director that they’re getting for this one, David Slade, he did Hard Candy and 30 Days of Night, which are pretty dark movies. They’re going dark, which I think is smart. Maybe trying to appeal to the boys a little more—‘cause they seem to have the young girl demographic locked down. [LAUGHS]

LM: Tell me about the new movie. I haven’t read the second book, but I assume there will be equally swoon-worthy material in this one?

MW: The girls are going to melt for this second film. Edward recites Shakespeare; and obviously Jacob has totally transformed himself. He’s been working out like crazy. People are going to go nuts.

LM: Was it very different filming the second film, in comparison to that first one, when none of you had any idea how big Twilight would become?

MW: A lot had changed. By the time the second film rolled around, we all pretty much knew what we were getting ourselves into. There was a lot more money to put in to the film, and a lot more prep time, and, you know, there were a lot more fans. In Vancouver, where we shot the film, we tried really hard to keep it a secret where our locations were, but, you just couldn’t—all it took was one person to see, you know, Taylor or Kristen on the street and then that person would text message one of her friends and then, you know, ten minutes later there would be hundreds of people on set. It was crazy.

Another great interview with Michael! He is making me even more excited (if that’s possible) to see New Moon because every time he talks about it he is so enthusiastic and optimistic! I’ll admit though – the “Edward recites Shakespeare” didn’t hurt the cause. November…where are you?!

What did you think of this interview? Are you getting more excited to see the film by reading these interviews?

Edward reciting Shakespeare, OME. Every time there is a new interview another tidbit of new info. about the movie comes out. I do wish they had time to put Bella’s human friends in the movie as much as they were in the book, they are all such nice people. It would make for a long movie, but I’m willing to sit for how ever long it may take.
I wish they would do a director’s cut like they did for LOTR. They put in every scene they filmed into the movie, it made it a 2 parter, but heck who cares, it’s a DVD and you can pause it where you want.
I’m so excited again for New Moon to come out. Good interview.

OMG Marianne, my body just went numb. Edward reciting Shakespeare! *THUD* I’ll be back later when I regain consciousness and feeling in my body again. Not even exaggerating.

  • Taylor D.

he said it going to be great to work with them over the course of four films………so r they making breaking dawn a movie or not???

  • http://twilightersanonymous Marianne

Taylor: I haven’t heard anything official about Breaking Dawn yet but this is the 2nd time someone has made reference to it, didn’t Peter say something simliar?
Chelle: I know, what we are hearing sounds so good and so much like the book, I….just…can’t…wait.
Have you made it up off the floor?

  • Chelle

Marianne, still hyperventilating a little bit. (Breathe Marichelle! Breathe! I just got my copy of Sexy Stars of Twilight!!! Double *THUD* kind of a day!) LOL!

Taylor D., BD is listed on IMDB as movie in development, let’s keep our fingers crossed. I wish they’d confirm it already, they’ll killing us!

OK back to Michael, that’s the first I hear he auditioned for Edward! I think he plays Mike very well! I like him! I like them all. They’re doing these little interviews and purposely spilling little details to torture us, that’s my conclusion!

Incredible, your name is Marichelle, mine is Marianne(of course) and my sister’s name is Michele and we are very close in age. When we were kids my mom would always call us Marichelle, that way she was always half right. What a coincidence. Just a fun memory from my youth.

Did you say you were going to start reading HP. I asked on the other news blog at the end of this page if you had not read the HP books before. If not you will like them I’m sure. When the last HP book came out I was looking for something to read and the girl’s from B&N suggested Twilight, well the rest is history. Happy reading, there is so much more in the books then in the movies, at least after the first 2.

  • Chelle

Marianne, that is just too funny about combining yours and your sister’s name! Haha, I put the latter part of my name cuz my name pretty much gets butchered hundreds of ways! haha!

Yes, I got my HP one today, the first one. I’m looking forward to it!

In reference to Michael Welch saying 4 movies, guys, look on page 8 of the Sexy Stars of Twilight, it says 3 more movies are coming out (after Twilight)… another confirmation perhaps?!?!?!

Drip-Drip-Drip, we’re getting a little info. at a time about BD. I think they will do Breaking Dawn. Otherwise I’m afraid those medieval battle cries twi-mom wrote about will be heard around the world.

  • leanne

OMG!!! jumps up and down, i was wondering whether they were going to include the whole shakespeare scene, it is pretty vital. Oh i wonder how that will turn out.

I love Mike Welch, class act.

Thanks for sharing the interview guys.
