JOY MAGAZINE: INTERVIEW WITH ROB PATTINSON

Posted October 2nd, 2009 By: Evie 14 Comments »

Thanks to Twilight Poison we have a great picture and interview from Rob Pattinson that was done for Joy Magazine. In the interview Rob discusses how life has changed since his fame exploded, his love for music and his insights on Edward Cullen.

Last time we saw you, Twilight was about to be released and you said you didn’t know what to expect of the movie, and that everybody was looking forward to it. After all the success and box office numbers, how do you feel?

It’s very strange. I can say that everything has happened very fast. Like I’m fast-forwarding through life. Like everything around me is happening at 1000 m/p. The way you fast-forward a movie, just like that. I never thought the movie would cause such a stir. Seeing girls screaming around me is so bizarre. Sometimes I can’t believe is all about me. It’s like I’m living inside a movie, but I wake up and it’s all real. I see that it’s real and how much my life has changed. I still don’t know in which ways my life has changed, I’m still figuring that out. And I don’t know why but I think it’s going to take me a long time to figure it out. I guess it’s normal, don’t you think?

Of course! But we can’t deny that you’re already such a phenomenon by yourself. You have fans waiting for your next movie and wondering what you’re up to. Are you aware of that?

Yes, in fact, that’s the most strange part of it. For instance, I haven’t been able to see the final cut of New Moon, and I’ve read so many comments and opinions about it already. It’s something I can’t understand. It’s like everyone else can read into your future or, like they have more information of your life than you do.

In Twilight we got to see some sexual tension between Bella and Edward. That’s something very enigmatic. Will that continue in the rest of the movies?

I don’t think there was sexual tension, nor do I think that that’s the focus of the movies. I don’t see it that way. I think it’s a stroy about what it means to commit to a feeling and to the person that you love. Above all, it’s about finding someone to love despite having to fight so many problems that might show up. What hooks you about the movie, I’m convinced about it, is that it talks about the fear of what can happen to you if you fall in love and give yourself away completely. Realising how far you can go for love, passion and being amazed by it. People identify with it more than you can imagine. To me it’s not even a story about vampires, but about feelings that we’ve all felt before. It talks about the fear of feeling those things. It’s a movie with so many meanings, that’s why I like it and I think that’s why people like it too.

And in those moments of intimacy and privacy, is it true that you like to play the guitar? What do you do when you’re by yourself?

I do play the guitar. I have friends in Vancouver and I get together with them to play the guitar, listen to music. We spend the nights singing and swapping stories. I also do that when I’m at hotels. It’s relaxing. Music is my other passion. I hope I never leave it.

Speaking of passion and music, we know you write songs. What can you share about it?

I’m trying to write some songs for the next movie. I don’t know if it will be possible because of my schedule, but I want to do it. Music is the other side of me, it’s one of the things that complete me and I wouldn’t want to leave it aside for anything in the world. I have the intention of evolving in that aspect. It’s something I want to develop just as much as acting. I want to have a balance between those two things.

Do you have a spiritual side?

I believe in Karma. I believe it exists and whatever you do in your everyday life makes the eprson that you are. What you give in life comes back to you. I’m convinced of that, so I’m sure that everyday you have to be a good person and treat everyone with respect. We’re all connected.

We know you can’t say much about New Moon, but don’t leave before you tell us, did you have to go to some place dark to play this vampire again?

Yes, the truth is that the way I wanted to play Edward was less powerful. He’s a character that can’t change his condition, he didn’t choose his fate. He was unconscious when Carlisle turned him into a vampire. When he woke up, three days later, he realized that in order to survive he would have to kill people. Imagine what would you feel like if you knew you would never grow old and that you would live forever. And what’s worse, you didn’t look for it. You become a sort of Superman without even wanting to be that, you were just a 17 year old kid. You must feel a huge impotence and frustration. Instead of believing you’re hero, you’re a person who can’t find himself and doesn’t know who he is. Understanding that has been fundamental in understanding Edward. That very human side of him is what I love about him and I feel like I can relate to that. There’s something we all find hard to change and face about ourselves.

Just when I thought we’d never get a Rob interview that was more honest and fantastic than the GQ one this one from Joy Magazine comes along. I don’t know how it’s possible to read Rob’s interviews and not love him. I sure hope this means he is writing music for Eclipse!

Did you like this interview with Rob? Would you like to see Rob’s music on the Eclipse soundtrack?

  • michelle

i love this interview its so good and boy let me tell you rob gets edward its like he has wedward down pat and i love that he understands him so much and rob is right about the sexual tension yes it might be there in the back ground but thas not what this about . my boy gets it he does

  • Alicia

This was a great interview, I like that he was very open. I think he should absolutely write some music for the upcoming films. I think he is an amazing singer/musician and his talents cannot be wasted. He needs to do it for, not only himself of course, but because he has so many fans and so many others who feel the way I do. He’s outstanding in so many things he does, that we see, and I hope he never throws his passion for writing and playing music away, ever, for anything.

  • Nicole Loves Edward

I love how Rob knows Edward so well. Also, I hope he does get the time to write music because I know he loves that as well.

  • Carlie

Rob does have a beautiful soul, it’s amazing how much he understands .. but then again it’s not. He brought our beloved Edward to life and I can’t imagine it being anyone else. He is perfect!

  • Midori

This was a very interesting interview. I saw another side of Rob that I didn’t know he had. I didn’t know he believes in karma, which is very good. It’s like what goes around, comes around. It is like how you are in life, comes right back to you. It is a simple practice of being a Buddhist. As for Twilight, I understand what Rob is trying to convey about the movie. It is a love story, a beautiful one. I think that is why it is so popular. It is how they love each other despite all the negativity against their relationship. Bella knows what she wants and won’t give up until she gets Edward.

Also, Rob mentioned that he wants to write a couple songs for the soundtrack of Eclipse. I know they will be amazing, because he writes from his heart or soul.

Robert and Kristen both sound like they have turned a corner in how they relate to their characters. Good for them!

This interview is great but the typos kill me. In the last bit:
“You must feel a huge impotence and frustration…”

Is that actually impotence? Or was it supposed to be ‘importance’? Impotence would make the sentence mean one thing entirely different than importance…

My fav part: ‘We are all connected.’ SOOOO true.

  • newborn1863

Since my fav book is Eclipse ,and I look forward to the movie more than I do New Moon even o__O I think that Rob would write a perfect song for the tent scene,as Jacob walks away hearing the truth about Bella and Edwards engagement- or as he watches Bella sleep with Jacob in the sleeping bag, that would be a good song from Edwards heart~

  • Irishtwilighter

Love Rob’s comments on having a spiritual side. Shows how deep & intelligent he is. His answers are great & I agree with the others in how well he “gets” Edward.
It would be fantastic to think David Slade would include Rob’s work in the soundtrack for Eclipse. In all honesty who would be more qualified to contribute than the male lead who is living with this character & bringing the books to life (so well I might add) & if the rumours are to be be believed about Rob & Kris, well then that would lead to help in creating a totally amazing song that would really fit Eclipse’s storyline. Its such a talented cast, musically, so wouldnt it be wonderful to include them???
After all some of the other people who contribute to the soundtracks of these movies are only trying to get in on the fame & pen songs after having seen rough cuts of the movie. Most of them probably havent even read the books.
But thats all just my opinion.
On a totally different note, I just love that picture of him. Havent seen that one before.

Nice Interview, I agree with Irishtwilighter, in respect to who more than Rob could write music that would come from Edward’s heart. He has Edward, and has been living the part for two going on three films. There are several scenes he could put his music to, the tent, jake warming up Bella when he could not and the night he stayed with her as she cried her heart out after telling Jacob it was Edward she needed and could not live without. If it is Eclipse he is trying to write for and not Remember Me, than I hope his music is included and is for one of those scenes.

  • Lainie88

Rob is amazing. He is coming into his own it seems with all this madness around him. Good for him. So many actors might crumble and disappoint under all this pressure & fame. At 23 he has more integrity then most actors his age or older. Can’t wait for him to start pumping out some beautiful music. My ipod is waiting……..

  • Irishtwilighter

Yes Marianne, those would definately be the best scenes in Eclipse for Rob to contribute to. Fingers crossed he gets the opportunity. But now you have me wondering about Remember me?? Havent heard anywhere that he might be penning songs for that.

  • http://twilightersanonymous Marianne

I just didn’t know what he meant when he said he was trying to write some music for the next movie. Did he mean the Twilight movies or his movie Remember Me coming out next year.
