Looks like Michael Copon and Taylor Lautner will be duking it out for the role of Jacob Black!Michael, 26, just spoke with J-14 to talk about nabbing himself the perfect part in New Moon, the upcoming sequel to Twilight.
On what he’s been doing to prepare: I feel like I need to bulk down. Right now I’m close to 200 pounds of muscle. Taylor’s [Lautner] probably what, 140, if he’s lucky? I’m already 200 pounds, so there’s no need for me to get any bigger. Plus he’s 5′6″ and I’m 6′2″. In the book, he grows eight inches and I’m exactly eight inches taller than Taylor. Huge difference.
On why he should get the role of Jacob Black: I have nothing against Taylor personally. I think he’s great and tremendous at what he does. But it’s just adjusting to the fact that Jacob has to grow. It’s a matter of going with the storyline. It goes with the territory. I see so much in Jacob Black that I feel like wasn’t brought to the first film that if I had the opportunity, I would totally create an amazing character.
On the books: I’ve read the first one and I’ve dabbled through the Cliffs Notes of the second and third ones. I haven’t had time to actually sit down and read the whole book, but I kind of know what happens.

A forum member made me aware of this article (in response to my earlier post about harassing Copon). While I admit he sounds arrogant here, I still don’t think Twilight fans should be cruel to him. Do not take this as permission to attack him.
That said, I’m not happy that he thinks cliff notes will suffice. This is a beloved story to many of us. If you want the part, step up.
Just because you you weigh more and you’re taller than Taylor does not make you better for the part. In my opinion, you have a damn long way to go before you prove you’re right for the part of Jacob Black…
I’m hoping they misquoted him or twisted his words, cause he just started out on the wrong foot for me.

Agreed. I’m not pleased with his attitude. From his insinuations to getting the Jacob part on his Facebook, to his gloating here, not cool. Also, READ the books. If he wants the part, make the time. With that said, he should not be treated poorly.
I think Kristen should audition him and see if they have any chemistry! Also to see if he does anything besides pose. I want to see a little chemistry there so there is a true “triangle” feeling.
I am wondering about the part when he says that he sees so much of Jacob that wasn’t brought to the film. How could he possibly know this when he hasn’t read New Moon? Jacob isn’t even in the first book very much so there’s not much to “bring to the film.” By the way, I thought Taylor did a great job-I don’t know if he fits the Jacob described in New Moon though. I don’t know if I want this guy either-he doesn’t come off as being the happy-go-lucky Jacob in the book.
Where does this guy get his confidence from? Has someone from the film told him he has a shot at the role? Sounds like he thinks he’s got a good chance. If they don’t go with Taylor, then they should be looking at several choices. Of course, I want them to stick with Taylor. He is Jacob to me now.

CJ nailed it. Jacob is hardly in the first book. How can he “kinda know what happens?” Did any of us know what was going to happen? I am so rooting for Taylor. TV shows can change characters. Sequels cannot change characters. They just can’t. Think of any sequel…did they change any of the main characters? No, of course not.
That said, it’s one thing to complain on a blog, it’s quite another to be downright mean or immature to someone’s face. Not cool.
I think I just threw up in my mouth a lil while reading this!!! I’m not saying he doesn’t make a few good points BUT I don’t think he has to act like that. He needs to check his HUGE ego at the door…I pray he was misquoted in this but with what he was puttin for his status on facebook earlier this wk I doubt it.
Wow! I looked at a picture of this guy and thought, by looks anyway, that he would make a great Jacob, but jeez, he sounds like an arrogant jerk. Anyone else get the feeling that, with the barely-boosted budget, accelerated shooting schedule and recasting Jacob with this tool, that Summit doesn’t give a fat rat’s patootie what Twilight fans want?

It seems like Michael Copon is arrogant and I can’t see that working with the chemistry of the rest of the cast. The cast has taken the time to actually read the books and Taylor is even trying harder to keep his role as Jacob. Those are the kind of actors we need to portray our beloved characters. I know I shouldn’t attack him, but he reminds me of that guy in high school that thinks he’s the coolest thing and everyone just laughs at him and calls him a loser. I think they should stick with Taylor, make the fans happy and make some real money. I think if they cast Michael, they will lose in the end with the Twilight fans. Michael should keep him mouth shut until this is all settled.

I think Taylor should stay. Everyone knows he is Jacob and besides, if they want him bigger, hello people, they can make him taller, bigger, anything even far above the weight & muscles he can bulk up. Did anyone ever watch Harry Potter, Robbie Coltrane is not as big as they make Hagrid appear. It is really not difficult to make Taylor look even bigger than Michael Copon, besides the fact that Michael Copon doesn’t look Indian, he has the asian eyes. It is so obvious. He justs wants in on all the money that Twilight rake in and the recognition. The final decision should rest with Kristen as the two of them must have chemistry and it is established already with Taylor. We love you Taylor and you ARE Jacob PERIOD!
Wow is all I can say. He’s trying out for a part on a book series he read the ‘cliff notes’ of because ‘he hasn’t had enough time to read it’. WOW!! Taylor was the original and he is working hard to be the only and I hope he gets the part just so he can prove that Micheal Copon that he is Jacob.

Ugh - What an egotistical arrogant guy he is! His attitude about it is horrendous. So what if he’s taller than Taylor - the movie business has their “magical creations” to make Taylor as tall as he needs to be! I really don’t like Michael Copon’s attitude. The segment on his weight compared to Taylor Lautner’s, not cool. He is way too cocky. He hasn’t even read the book. What person does not read the book? ‘I kind of know what happens.’ What is wrong with this guy? I have been nothing but objective, trying to stay positive in things that are far from our control. I even agreed that Taylor should be replaced soley on the basis that Michael meets the mucsle and height requirments. Taylor did a great job as the shy, freindly Jacob. We saw in the end the intense hatred between Edward and Jake, that showed us Taylor is capable of dramatic acting. Michael…dude, what are you thinking acting cocky like that? Who does Kristin have the best chemistry with? This would make or break the movie no matter how much more I personally like Taylor Lautner’s attitude better the Michael Copon’s. Also, if the chemistry is good with Lautner and they can get the special effects to look good, if Copon really wants to be in the movie he looks closer to Sam’s age, unless of course they bring Solomon Trimble back as Sam.

Even though I like Taylor Michael makes a great point about Jacob Black growing. There’s no way Taylor can grow that fast. I do think though that he should actually read the book.

There is more to the character of Jacob Black than height or size
I have yet to see much of anything that makes this guy look promising to me. So far he seems like a pompous jerk. I don’t know him, I can’t claim to know what he’s really like-but he’s hasn’t made a very good impression thus far.

He would not make a “Good Jacob”. For starters, he doesn’t even look Native American. Second, the “Twilight” movie didn’t keep everything the same as in the book. In the book, the Cullens mansion is described as an old style mansion while in the movie it looked too modern. If they won’t keep the house in the same style in the book, then why is Summit “concern” about making Jacob older looking and taller? And finally Taylor is already taller than the actor that plays SAM, “the alpha wolf”!!!! You don’t need Taylor to get any taller. Do you!!!

Taylor is 5′9″(or probably taller), not 5′6″, and he’s still growing. For all we know, he could catch up to Michael, since he’s 26 and no longer grows.

Cliff notes? Oh please! At least Taylor has actually read the books and fully understands Jacob’s character. Taylor’s working out a lot too. Since Twilight finished, he’s gotten a lot bigger.
And just a message to all those people that just compare this to “the Rob Effect”, the people that didn’t like him just looked at him for looks, and not acting ability. The people that liked him as Edward looked past his looks to his acting ability. Michael is a different story. And especially since Taylor was initially cast as Jacob, “the Rob Effect” doesn’t neccessarily work, because everyone sees Taylor as Jacob.

Friggin’ Nikki Reed is shorter than Ashley Greene, but they managed to make Rosalie look taller than Alice! Nikki Reed basically only got the role because Catherine really likes her, not that I don’t love her, but…if she can stay on TAYLOR DEFINITELY SHOULD.
PLUS, if Warner Brothers can make Robbie Coltrane as big as a house for Harry Potter and have it look realistic, they definitely can do it for Jacob who doesn’t need as severe of a height change. Summit is just lazy.
This is crap and I feel like Summit will lose a lot of money if they switch Jacobs. He is one of the most enthusiastic actors about the film and I think it would suffer if he was gone. Not many fans LIKED New Moon, it’s stupid to give us another reason to dislike it.

i would rather have a short jacob than have an arrogant horrible actor replace taylor. in fact i never really pictured jacob being HUGE more just edwards height only really buff. i thought taylor had one of the best performances in twilight. i completely forgot it was taylor pretending to be jacob. he as amazing and exactly how i imagined jacob when i read the books!
oh and newsflash michael: jacob is supposed to be 6′7″ not 6′2″ so technically, youre too short also!!!
I’m going to try to see this from both points of view.
Michael could very well look the part for the older, larger Jacob. Like he claimed, he is 200lbs, and 6′2, and he looks like a possible Native American. I’ve seen a bit of his older work, and I question whether he can acts the personality of Jacob after the wolf change.
ALSO, like mentioned before, HE HASN’T READ THE BOOKS! He CLAIMS that he’ll make a great Jake, but HE DOESN’T KNOW WHO JACOB REALLY IS. He’s hardly in twilight and the cliff notes don’t necessarily do the book justice!
IN ADDITION, I personally don’t like the idea of changing the cast AT ALL. If you do that in a big series like this, Michael could very well look TOO OLD by the end of the saga.
Honestly, who cares how big of a jerk he is? Its called ACTING, kids. I think that he would do well in the role of Jacob.
All of you keep saying how he is “arrogant” and “self centered.” Doesn’t Bella say that about Jacob QUITE a few times in the books? I think so. I think Taylor was great as Jacob, but only as little Jacob. I just could NOT picture him grabbing Bella and making her kiss him. He’s just not “Older Jake” to me.
Michael’s words were rude, yes, but he’s still a good actor. That’s why they call it acting. He will ACT like he’s not a complete ass. (Even though Jacob is sort of supposed to be.)
I do agree with some of you though. I think they should do a SERIOUS audition and try him with Kristen and Rob, and just see what kind of chemistry they have.
Taylor may be able to gain a bunch of weight, but it won’t make him taller. We all know how incredible the visual effects were in Twilight, (ie. glittering Edward) so digitally making Taylor taller, isn’t in the program.

Not only am I disgusted with his attitude, I genuinely don’t like the idea of him being Jacob. This whole “Taylor doesn’t fit the description” thing is stupid. Not all of the actors actually fit the exact description. Ashley, for example, is way taller than Alice, and I for one think she did an absolutely astonishing job. Im not team jacob but taylor has grown on me and this guy seems like a total ass!! It took me a week and a half to read all the books including the one online. He dosen’t have time to read the books??? What the hell?? taylor may not be as tall as ‘jacob’ but Greene (alice) dosen’t fit the total body discreption either. She was great and so is Taylor!! If he does get replaced (knock on wood) have it be a nice guy, not a total ass. Steven straight is great. I went to the midnight show (waited from 10 am on) brought my tickets over a month in advance, went to the twilight tour, waited in line from 2am on to get close to you guys and get photos. This made me laugh/cry when I read it. There are 10-year olds that have read all of the books. Hell I’m in my 20s and I’ve read all of the books several times through. I’m also very busy, but I still find the time to read. For a 26-year old man to say he read the Cliffs Notes for New Moon…that’s just funny and sad at the same time.

i agree that michael copon does not look native american at all compared with taylor’s looks. also, even mentioning cliff notes as a substitute for reading the books was a mistake. everyone knows that cliff notes are no real substitute. this is “new moon” the movie and he has not even read the book. i am definitely worried about the new director, the casting issues and the very short production time-frame for this movie. i really hope the movie does not suffer for it.
Michael doesn’t look like a native American - he looks European. I think Taylor did an awesome job, and with all the money they raked in for the first movie, surely they can spend it on effects to make Taylor look bigger if necessary. Taylor was perfect for the role, and i will be very annoyed if he is replaced. Michael is ok, but not even reading the books is sloppy prep work on his part. He may be bigger, but bigger is not always better - especially in this case.

okay, so I’m a recent convert, but I’ve been team Jacob since I started the books…and team Taylor since forever. They can’t replace him with this guy! What the heck?? I’ll just echo what everybody else has said: If they could make Hagrid look as big as J.K. Rowling wrote him to be, they can make Taylor look six inches taller. And I’m proud of him for working so hard to bulk up when it’s not even entirely set in stone he’s coming back as Jacob. That’s a dedicated actor and he deserves to be Jacob.
to tell the truth, I only went and saw the movie because he was in it. if they replace him with some cocky 26-year old, no way am I spending my money on that.
Alright so i get he’s bulky and everything and tall but when i read the 2nd and 3rd book i could see taylor playing those parts and to me he’s the perfect jacob. Even before i saw the movie and taylor was in it the guy i imagined looked completely liked him…..I was even shocked to see how great he was playing the charcter of jacob. I get that jacob has his growth spurt kind of thing in the book but i cant see jacob as anyone better than taylor. Jacob has to play on our heartstrings in all of the the future movies- you know Bella will end up with Edward but the conflict she feels over Jacob is a huge part of the last three books and will be a great emotional trigger for the film. If you cast someone in the role who irritates/disgusts and puts off the fans before the movie has even begun to be filmed (see 99% of posts before mine) - you are going to lose that sympathy for Jacob that you need to tell the story. Taylor has that part down already even in the short scenes he he had in Twilight. Plus he and Rob already have the Edward vs. Jacob look down pretty good in the prom scene if you ask me. Listen to the fans on this one! Why not make the people happy that will be buying the tickets? And your existing cast, also- it seems pretty simple!
