KRISTEN STEWART – ‘KIDS HAVE BEEN SO MEAN TO ME’

Posted December 14th, 2008 By: Team Switzerland 65 Comments »

Independent.ie has a very interesting, if not slightly sad, new article about Kristen Stewart. They talk a bit with her about the lack of love she tends to get from fans in comparison to her co-star Robert Pattinson, why she never went on ‘kiddie’ auditions, and more.

Below is a portion of the article:

KRISTEN Stewart is not unlike any 18-year-old you might see sifting through the rack in a second-hand clothes shop or nodding her head at an indie gig, but the difference between Stewart and the average teenager is that she not only performs on screen, but is also expected to be articulate and engaging as she fields questions from the media day-after-day in countries all over the world.

The round of interviews to promote a movie and help make millions for the studio can be demanding and it is easy to forget just how young some of the stars really are. Stewart is learning all about those demands with Twilight, the first film adaptation of the book series written by Stephenie Meyer. “It is the hardest thing,” she says of the levels of press attention now focused on her.

If you have a daughter aged 11 to 15 you may well be aware of the Twilight phenomenon. The books (four in total) have sold more than 17 million copies worldwide, and are the tale of the love between a vampire with a “Blue Steel” pout called Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) and a slightly offbeat schoolgirl, Bella (Stewart). It’s The Lost Boys for the tween generation, minus the fangs and blood.

While her co-star Pattinson has become the latest teen heartthrob, Stewart is learning that not everyone wants to be her friend as they compete for the attentions of her on-screen love interest.

“We have to do autograph signings occasionally and usually everyone is so nice and excited but sometimes they just walk by and if their expressions spoke they would say, ‘We’re not here for you, we’re here for Rob. Don’t think you’re so special. We don’t even want your autograph’.”

She’s aware that doing a movie with such a huge following as this, and the sequels that will follow, brings with it a pressure that she hasn’t experienced before. “Normally if you do a movie and it touches people or says something to somebody then you say, ‘Great; cool; we did that for a reason’. And if it doesn’t then you say, ‘OK, we’ll go and do another one’. In this case that’s not an option. If people didn’t like it, then it would really be a big failure.”

Stewart, so small she appears almost to be engulfed by the large sofa she’s sitting on, seems to be your classic indie-girl. She’s extremely pretty, but doesn’t have on much, if any, make-up. She has a wry, self-deprecating sense of humour and talks of her guitar playing (“I’m not good”), her love of the Beatles and her fondness for classic literature rather than teen books like Twilight. “But this isn’t really a teen novel. It appears to be but it’s not,” she makes sure to clarify.

Like Ellen Page, who was nominated for her performance in Juno last year, Stewart is part of a new brigade of young actresses who are seeking to be taken seriously for their acting rather than being some glitzed-up marketing package.

She began performing as a young child and claims that she “fell into acting” in the way that only someone who grew up in Los Angeles really can. She was spotted singing at a school concert by an agent and was encouraged to go to some auditions. “I was vehemently turned away from all of the kiddie auditions,” says Stewart. “I never got any commercials or anything on the Disney Channel. I was always much too serious.”

She started to get some movie roles, including playing Jodie Foster’s daughter in Panic Room. Foster is the actress she is often compared to, but after starring alongside her and studying her every move, Stewart then had to return to school, which she discovered had now become an uncompromising world.

“It was terrible. I hated going back to school. I did Panic Room when I was in the sixth grade. Even though it was just one movie and wasn’t a big deal, people would come up and scream at me in the halls. People were actually mean. They weren’t nice at all and I got all this attention and so I just changed schools. I thought it was people who I’d grown up with just being rude, but it still continued. Kids are mean. It was terrible.”

Aside from Foster, Stewart has worked with Sean Penn on Into the Wild and recently played Robert De Niro’s daughter in What Just Happened? — established figures who, she says, she watches to see exactly how they operate. Despite growing up in LA, as the daughter of an assistant director and a script supervisor, she is still learning what’s on offer as an actress.

“Recently, I had a meeting with Warren Beatty about a movie that he wants to do and he said a brilliant thing to me, which he said he had told Jodie. He said, ‘Access. You have access to everything now. Use it. Do something. Don’t just be an actor.’

This article actually made me fairly sad. Obviously a large number of Twilighters are obsessing over Rob, but Kristen doesn’t deserve to get the flip side of that. I’m hoping that the Robsession will die down and people will appreciate Kristen for her hard work and talent.

What did you think of this article? Were you surprised by anything of the things she said? Did you learn anything new?

I LOVE Kristen.I think she’s unique and really talented.I think she’s got a bright future ahead of her and who cares if she’s a “snob” in the interviews? I mean, i never saw that she is,really. In fact, she’s not used to it and tries really hard into giving the best answer to please everyone that i feel bad.And i think in that process she sometimes got frustrated and tired that she slipped a lil. If it was me,i would walk away crying. Its a lot of attention and pressure in a short space of time. Its a shame that everyone expects her to behave a certain way just couse she’s involved in this phenomenon.

She admitted that she’s just not good in all those side stuff besides acting.I can’t see any wrong with that!
I couldn’t think of anyone else would play Bella.Well there is a LOt of good actresses out there, but the thing about Kristen she brings authencity into that character that I never thought would work.
And if I could meet her,I would just die!!!the same would apply to Rob as well!

    it was funny :)

  • Kemal

She wasnt meant to act in a teen movie.
Was very talented and should have gone on with festival movies. Even the way she looked, spoke etc were not for these kind of movies.
I guess noone can resist the temptation when offered a huge fame.

Sorry guys, but I really don’t understand people’s obsession with Rob. AT ALL.

    Kristen is amazing. Period.

Someone should start a website thanking her for all of her hard work!!!!!!!!

ok…im a huge fan of this series and i love rob and kristen both. however….rob didnt quite fit into the edward persona i had imagined, and kristen fit the description perfectly…in my opinion. Now, this is my opinion, and i agree with the ones who say she seems rude. In her interviews she seems boring and concieted. I dont think shes like this in real life, and she may not be used to all this fame, but when you enter a huge francise like this, you have to expect all this attention. If she were to smile more often and seem more “alive” in her interviews, i think people will gravitate towards her more. On a ending note, she has tons of fans. The reason she hasnt gotten as much attention is because Twilight is mostly written for girls, and girls are naturally gonna talk and obsess about hot guys(fyi….robert), and i think the spoof about him will go down and kristen will get her time in the spotlight. Let me just end by saying that she has an amazing acting talent, and should be praised. =]

    I’m far from a teenager..and I was totally impressed by Kristen’s performance..
The chemistry was perfect between her and Rob.. Casting was perfect.. Each actor brought their character alive just like the book did for me.. In my opinion Kristen is a professional.. She knows what she is doing… and I admire that.. Twilight is an excellent film and we are very anxious to see more.. Thank you Kristen.. Just wish there was a way to tell you… Have no fear.. There are more fans in your court than you can imagine..

It’s ridiculous how low some people stoop to show their jealously. Kristen was brilliant in the film, and after reading all four books and seeing the movie many times, I don’t want anyone else to play the part. Robert’s fans are being extremely shallow to the point where it’s pathetic. It’s fine if some people don’t want her autograph, she doesn’t need to know that. I think that Kristen is very mature with her career. She doesn’t really love the media attention (such as the interviews), and she doesn’t label herself as something other than human. I think that people should respect not bash her for that. Just brush those comments off Kristen :]

  • Afza

I dont kno wats wrong with everybody…..Kristen is my fave actress and she does an ausome job. I’ve so far seen 4 of her movies. I dont kno y ppl yell at her…….I mean its supposed to be KRISTEN&ROBERT not ROBERT&KRISTEN. Its “Bella’s” pov (point of view) not Edward’s. Bella’s the main actor. Kristen is so much better than Robert just saying. And I totally agree with all u guyz, ROBERT OBBSESSIERS are really getting on my nerves…..i mean not to be rude or anything but….WE GET IT U LUV ROBERT!! NOW STOP TALKING ABOUT DATING HIM, MARRYING HIM, KISSING HIM, AND ETC.! ITS REALLY UNLIKELY!!! SO JUST STOP!!!!! *Agh*

  • denise

I think its really pittiful. Yes, Robert is hot, I’m not gonna deny that, but that shouldn’t have anything to do with how they view Kristen. She is talented, and my idol. The “Roboholics” need to grasp the fact that they are too young—and not to mention too normal— for him. He is a great actor, but Kristen deserves some notice too.

  • kirsten

man people can be itiots kristen did an outstanding job about pertraying bella. personaly she is the best actor of our time, so far. i know she can seem to have “no emotion”, to me in her movies theirs a lot of intence great emotion so everyone just let it go and stop being jealous of her.

  • ANA

that is so messed-up. i would never say something like that to her if i were jealous id just simply keep my mouth shut. because it feels realy bad if someone said that to u.

  • Minny

I think it’s sad that people would be mean to anyone, period, though I can understand why people might have strong feelings. Since the book was so famous she’s under a lot of pressure to be good, and if people don’t like they way she plays something they’ll be upset. So really stay away from mean people, but understand its just them seeing the character differently or being jealous i guess.

I love you kristen stewart even though i am a girl i think you are a gorgeous actress i wish i could be as gorgeous as you are i am a number 1 big fan i think that people are just bastereds who are mean and nasty to others so just ignore them eventually it will have to stop beleive me i know how you feel even though im not famous so good luck in the future love you have a great year!

  • negan

Kristen is an amazing actress, she portrayed Bella perfectly i first saw her in twilight and i loved her performance that i actually went to get a couple of movies she played in. Robert is hot and all but i really think Kristen did a better job and she’s so pretty without make up so teenage girls need to get over their obsession with rob “someone who would never actually remember who they are or who they’ll never meet” and appreciate kristen. she shouldn’t let them get her down because she’s someone and they’re not oh and robert likes her too.
