LA TIMES:’New Moon’ casting: Who should play Leah Clearwater?
Fans already know that Leah, the only female werewolf in the tribe and Sam’s former girlfriend, isn’t too important at first but becomes more central in the subsequent books “Eclipse” and “Breaking Dawn.” In fact, author Stephenie Meyer has said that if she continued any of the characters’ stories, Leah’s tale would be her first choice.But is Vanessa the fans’ first choice? Could she be too much sweetness and light? Maybe, maybe not. Click on the photo gallery above and take a look at nine other actresses we think should be contending for the role.

We now know Vanessa did not audition for New Moon (I know all the rumors are confusing), but the LA Times brings up some interesting choices. I don’t recognize most of the actresses. Do you? Do you think any of the suggestions would work for Leah?

now that the name is out there i would love to see jessica szohr play leah. (she’s vanessa in gossip girl in case you didn’t know) she’s not tall, but she is taller than many popular actresses out there… plus with her current show’s popularity on the rise, she could potentially brin in a lot of newer viewers… ones that are “too old” (whatever than means) for twilight and have been fighting the urge to read it. i like kristen kreuk too (from smallville)
Jessica Szohr is exactly how I’ve pictured Leah. I think Hudgens and all the other Disney girls are too ‘cherry’ for her and would bring in a much different fan base. I hope it goes to an actess less known so it’s about Leah not her previous work.
My vote would be for Jessica Szohr and Lea Michele (they picture they show of her is terrible - this one’s much better: http://images.broadwayworld.com/upload/15020/michele31.jpg) to play Emily and Leah, I think both actresses would be wonderful for either part.
Lea was phenomenal in Spring Awakening - I’m not sure how much angstier it gets than that . . .
Neither Emily or Leah have had a super-peachy life though, so I hope they take care to cast both parts with someone that’s not perky Disney.
I LOVE the idea of Miranda Cosgrove! I voted for her. I am sick of the ‘Gossip Girl’ types being cast in these movies. They are NOT good actors. They belong on after school specials…Miranda Cosgrove is a fantastic actress and could really bring some added talent to the films.

I love Smallville and she has the “heartbroken girl” down.If you watched the show, she was in love with Clark,but never could be with him really, just like Sam and Leah…. I think she could portray the part just right. I agree and disagree with jakuku1984…If you have read the books, yes Leah is in New Moon a couple times, nothing major but shes there. At the fire where Bella learns the way the “shape-shifters” or “wolves” came to be and then we all learn she is a “wolf” at the end of New Moon when they all go to battle with Victoria and her new born spawns…
I hope they cast an up and coming NATIVE AMERICAN/FIRST NATION actress. There are many Native American/First Nation actors out there and I’m sick of seeing other people get NA/FN roles. I’m a Native American, and I will be very disappointed if they cast someone who is not of Native American/First Nation descent.
I think that Miranda Cosgrove would be a pretty good choice. She’s mature, but not too old
i think all the choices are wrong. none have native american desent in them. why don’t they use real native american actress and actors for the movie? there are alot of great native american actress and actors why not look at any of them is it because they need someone famous. that shouldn’t matter it should be the right person for the job.

From that list, Alice Braga is how I pictured Leah. Looking at the pics got me wondering: which if these actresses would be willing to bulk up for the role? I see Leah, even in her human form, looking at least healthy. The campfire scene is one of my favorites in the series. I hope they keep it for the next movie.

my friend looks exactly like how leah is described, its creepy. we even call her leah to mess with her. she has long black straight hair, the longest eyelashes ever and she has dark brown skin. plus she is half mexican and half native american. if theres a casting call for this im dragging her there. if i can i will link a picture with her in it. she might kill me if she finds out but ill try.

if i had to choose any actress however, maybe nicole scherzinger? she is darker skinned, tall, beautiful, and I find could play the part well,

Dear Edward - what are people thinking? Does anyone remember that Leah is supposed to be a Native American? Furthermore, while we all are fascinated with the Leah character, why would Summit invest money in a big name, known star for a small part like that? It would be a waste of money and highly distracting from the rest of the cast. Also, Leah is supposed to be older - not a teeny bopper. I say, get a Native American actress that will fit in with the rest of the wolf pack and get on with it - Leah isn’t that important until BD anyway and we aren’t even sure they’ll make that one. No silly starlets!
Of all of these listed choices, I think that Summit should consider a LESS mainstream actress…just about every actress on this list is famous for a franchise or specific show. Disney actresses are way too peppy and “goody goody” for the role. I think that Q’orianka Kilcher would be PERFECT. I second the motion that casting for the Quilete roles should start with Native Americans.
Just a thought, but what do you think about Q’orianka Kilcher she was Pocahontas . I just been looking around and came across her in a picture with Solomon Trimble at the Pre-Golden Globes party 2009.

Golly, I’m start’g to become bored w/the Leah drama. The part is extremely small & least important compared to other characters. Volturi is much more important to the plot of New Moon. Summit can’t do a miniseries for one book - that’s a lot of story to get get into a 2 hour movie - as much as we wish it otherwise. Possible leads for Volturi is much more interesting to ponder on.
I think Nathalie Kelley or Adriana Lima.. I’m not really sure how good their acting, though..

I agree that they need to look to NA/FN actresses for the Leah role. They were able to find someone to play Sam and Embry, and they will likely do the same for the rest of the pack members so why not Leah too? There has to be someone there for the role - someone undiscovered. Summit - dont go with these sunshine and light disney/nick girls. They arent bad actresses I’m sure but you can do better. Casting one of them will only give the haters more cause to rag on the Twilight Nation. We dont need that, thanks. At least Hughes and Kruek have more dramatic roles under their respective belts but I still think they arent right. Sorry.
I hate Vanessa Hudgens. I hate anything and everything associated with High School Musical. And since when did Hispanic became the new Native American? How about casting a real Native American…an unknown maybe, it worked in the first movie!

I think Satu has the right idea. I think the actress form the New World would make a fantaistic Leah. I love that movie, and she is beautiful. If you think she can’t play angst, then watch New World and she here when Colin Ferrel leaves. Breaks your heart.
I totally agree with the views that the actress not only for Leah but for Emily be Native American. Here are two choices that I think would be perfect. Both are also not widely known though they do have experience.

For all of those that says why worry when the character isn’t really in the story until Eclipse, there are still many scenes that are done in La Push that surround the werewolves. It would make more sense that these characters would be at the bonfire listening to the legend.
I really want a Native American actress for these roles, not someone Native American looking that has South American and Mexican ancestry. While there is nothing wrong with that I’m tired of Native American actors getting the shaft for the Hispanic actors.

The casting director did an absolutely excellent job casting the other parts, and I trust her to do this, as well. I am NOT a casting director.
From those possible candidates, I imagine Alice Braga or Jessica Szohr as Leah Clearwater. However, I agree totally with everyone who says that Q’orianka Kilcher should play Leah (even if she’s not in the list). Disney girls would make the twilight fans focus on the wrong things. & that would not be a good thing.
Why troll the Disney vault for an actor to play Leah? Why choose anyone famous at all? They should get a good, unknown actor, and put the money they save into the special effects budget!

For those who have read New Moon knows that Leah is in fact in New Moon. She does however have a small role in the book. I seem to remember them introducing her at the end of the story when Harry dies. I could be wrong, it’s been a while since I read New Moon. But there is more of her in Eclipse and of course Breaking Dawn. What about her little brother? I can’t seem to remember his name.

Yeah, I would be so frustrated if I were a casting director looking for a Native American actress and I kept getting head shots for white, asian and hispanic girls with vaguely exotic features. None of those girls look Native American. Q’orianka Kilcher obviously could pull it off, but I doubt she’d want to me typecast that easily. Alex Rice (from comment 45) looked the best, but yeah, a tad too old. I really hope they go with a no name actress, like they did with Taylor. (I know he was in other stuff but you know you didn’t know his name before he got cast.)

I dont think any of the disney characters should play Leah because their all used to playing happy, cheery characters all of the time and Leah is a serious and strong female. I personally think that Alice Braga would be perfect but because most of the cast are quite young I think they would someone like Jessica Szohr or Kristen Kreuk. I think Kristen’s looks are most suited and I imagined Leah quite like her when i was reading the books. Also in Breaking Dawn (if it becomes a film) Leah gets quite close to Jacob and i can imagine them too getting on quite well. I think they woudl suit each other better.

I think everyones right the DIS/NICK girls are just not right for this book or part the only girl I can see playing a part in here from DIS/NICK would be Jessica and he parts covered but I tell you if they were to invest money on an actress for Leah in the up coming Eclipse or Breaking Dawn for that matter I’d say Jennifer Carpenter would be a good Leah but alot of you are also right with regards to the werewolves they should bring out more upcoming actors and actress’s that are native american that could bring their story more into the light and having native history they wouldent have to be so mentally prepared for the parts.But thats just my opinion.

Personally, I think they should have replaced Melissa Rosenberg while they had the chance. Leah’s not in New Moon? Maybe that’s the reason for the rewrite. And not to mention they’re going ot have to do some SERIOUS back tracking to show how close Alice and Bella are to make her big return work. The script was the biggest disappointment to me and it looks like that’s going ot be the case again.

I think that Jessica Szohr would do one of the best jobs out of then listed actresses, seeing as most of them are “Disney-statlets” and are way too happy-go-lucky for the role. Leah is a serious character who goes through a lot throughout the story and having someone that is so “happy” onscreen could completely ruin her character.
Although she is supposed to be native-American, so I think they should keep looking as I don’t really think that most of those actresses would do a great job.

The only choice they had that somewhat resembled the Leah in my mind was Alice Braga. I always thought of Leah being somewhat feisty and Alice looks like she’s got some attitude. But she might be too old for the part. I’m not even sure how old she is. No disney stars please. I’ve had enough of them.

Personally the only girl i can picture as Leah Clearwater is Jessica Lowndes, and im not too sure about that. I percieve Leah as a mad and bitter girl and from 90210 Jessica Lowndes is the only one who i think will be able to potray that, but i dont think she is dark enough. Personally, i think an unknown actor would be better, i dont want Vanessa Hudgens or Jessica Szohr in Eclipse, and the Disney girls would NOT be good. They’re all too smiley… Just my opinion. I think both Lea Michele and Jessica Szohr should play the two La Push girls mentioned ion the books, Emily and Leah as they both look the part and i can see them working well together.These parts are important and u can’t have a cheesey Disney channel star with a look of loathing in her eyes!

I think the book series speaks for itself and doesn’t need a name actress to play certain parts. I think casting should meet with no-names and discover new stars. Why recycle the same actors over and over when there are some of the most talented people who can suprise us!

I do like Kristen Kreuk for the Leah Clearwater part - because yes she has that sadness down pat - about being with someone she can’t love (aka Clark Kent). But Smallville has it down now - I just watched an old episode where they had skinwalkers and the girl - Tamara Feldman was great and beautiful - and as already been wolf. Tamara Feldman for Leah would be perfect! I believe it was Season two episode 32.
