LA TIMES: WYCK GODFREY COMMENTS ON ‘BREAKING DAWN’

Posted January 11th, 2010 By: Evie 14 Comments »

The Los Angeles Times has a new article with Twilight producer Wyck Godfrey. In the article Wyck talks about his hopes for Breaking Dawn, and the challenges that it will bring up for the creative team that takes the helm. Read more below:

Wyck Godfrey, the producer of all the films in the “Twilight” saga, admits that the creative team still doesn’t know how they’ll handle the character in the “Breaking Dawn” movie, but said that the plan is absolutely for the production to go forward — as either one or two installments — with an eye toward beginning to shoot in Vancouver this fall. All three stars are signed for “Breaking Dawn,” he said, meaning that Stewart and Pattinson will be dealing with the joys and woes of interspecies parenting and newly minted heartthrob Taylor Lautner will return as often-shirtless shape-shifter Jacob Black.

At the moment, screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg, who’s penned all the “Twilight” movies, is working on the “Breaking Dawn” script(s). “It’s a work in process,” Godfrey said in an interview Friday. “The issue [of whether there will be one or two movies] is not going to be resolved until we get the full treatment and see whether it’s organic. If it’s not organic, I don’t think it will be done, and if it is, it will be. It really has to do with how much level of detail from the books there is, with all of these new vampires that appear in ‘Breaking Dawn,’ the whole section about Jacob… It’s a very long single movie if it does become a single movie.”

Although there’s been a great deal of online chatter about whether Chris Weitz, director of the second and most recent movie, “New Moon,” would return to helm “Breaking Dawn,” Godfrey downplayed that possibility, saying, “I think everyone would be happy and excited if he came back, but I don’t think it’s going to happen.”

He and the other principals are formulating a list of potential directors, “but right now,” Godfrey said, “we’re just focused on the treatment and getting that right. At that point, we’re going to see who’s available and who’s appropriate. It’s such a complicated book because you have the emotions and the intensity of the love story — so you need somebody who’s just a wonderful director of actors — and yet it’s really complicated from an action and visual effects standpoint. They’ve got to have both tools in their kit.”

It sounds like we could be getting closer to a real announcement about Breaking Dawn soon. All of this sounds like there is still so much up in the air, I can’t wait for some real concrete details.

What are your thoughts on this interview with Wyck Godfrey? What do you think are the biggest challenges for Breaking Dawn?

I say…FOLLOW THE BOOKS! i would LOVE to sit through 2 five hour movies. LOL I’m glad to know Kristen, Rob, and Taylor are all on board. I think it would really mess things up if they weren’t. I haven’t been very impressed with Melissa Rosenberg, though. Don’t get me wrong I love the movies. I just think I expected more.

Hmmmm I actually want them to change somethings in the movie. Go the opposite direction that what the book did, and just take some inconsequential things out. An alternate view if I may. Actually get some action in the end!!! Instead of JUST a stand off, a bit of a mini war would be nice. I really want Bella to take a chunk out of Jane ^_^.

  • texxie

I want two movies. two 3 hour movies! lol I want them to stick with the book but….i think her pregnancy and the field stand off could be shortened. I mean it went on and on and on and on. maybe that’s just me.

I want rated R though. To me, the book is R. If I don’t get my Isle of Esme in ALL and I do mean ALL it’s glory…. :)

  • lauren

Biggest Challenge: Creating a good movie using Melissa Rosenberg. She just has not done Edward and Bella justice. I can’t even describe my disappointment of relationship level in all the movies. (I have heard Eclipse lacks the love as well).
I would like to see two movies. I believe there is a lot of details that I do not want to miss out on. I want to see the Vanquish, and Bella’s cars. I want to see Isle Esme…For a while…and I want to meet and understand who all the vampires are at the end. One movie would seem rushed, and would confuse those who have not read the books five times. I would like to see a mini battle at the end as well.

You know what I really want? Meyer to finish Midnight Sun, and give us a redo of Twilight (Vanquish included). MR not included.

  • DazzledMom

I agree that making Breaking Dawn is an real monster of a task. I am trying to imagine doing justice to Bella’s pregnancy with her looking like she’s been beaten and bruised. I think it should stay PG 13 though with all of Stephanie Meyer’s young readers and all- Remember Gone with the Wind’s scene was sexy enough when Rhett Butler swept Scarlett of her feet and carried her up the long staircase. Hearts can still pound without anything too graphic!

  • MEthatsWho

I so totally agree with lauren. MR…sucks…the disappointment with E/B relationship, or should I say, total lack of substance leading up to it, Isle of Esme is a must, in all details. How can people be concerned with the content when the book obviously describes it in details. I, also, believe that we should be allowed to have the other vampires be more than just extras as well, and the battle scene at the end should be good, but a stand off between Bella and Jane, besides the one that they have, would be inbelievable. They only have mental powers, which should be interesting to see how they shoot those parts.

And yes, I would soooo LOVE a Twilight redo with as Midnight Sun the plot. I think the actors would do so much better with that material and a different writer, but put in all of the details Twilight lacked. In doing so, I feel it would finally appease the masses, because regardless of how anything is done, the details missing from Twilight were too important to the storyline and there is a void for all the films that follow.

I would also prefer two movies, I sat for 3 hours for Titanic,LOTR,and HP, I would totally do this for BD. Don’t skimp on Bella and Edwards relationship this time around….I just have not seen that amazing, I can’t live with out you romance from the two of them. There was more steam between Bella and Jacob in New Moon than there was between Bella and Edward in Twilight. They need to make up for that, hopefully in Eclipse, but especially in BD. I want to be able to feel the love between them, so far I feel jipped.
Isle Esme doesn’t have to be “hardcore” lol but I want it very steamy and very suggestive. Show us passion between them, finally!! MR are you listening!!!

  • emmy

O.M.G. This is the closest weve ever come to a confirmation for BD!
OK, DazzledMom, I agree. I dont want it to be anything above M (coz we dont have PG 13 here). a) because it would totally take away from the romance and what the series stands for and b) because im only 13. If you want graphic lemons, i suggest you go and use your imagination!
Me and my mum have been discussing WHAT are they going to do for the delivery scene! I mean, in the book Bella is naked, a syringe is plunged into her heart, blood spurts out of her bloated stomach… The list goes on. and how would they show the pain she was in while she is burning? And omg all the CGI theyd need for showing the wolves thinking and in action constantly. Not to mention a baby with a full complement of teeth, that talks and runs and grows quickly and looks with adult-like understanding…. It will really be a challenge to make this movie. I hope they get a REALLY good director for this. And it HAS to be slipt into two movies!!! It has SOOO much detail that is essential. I have been thinking (as im reading it- up to chapter ‘bloodlust’) that maybe the best spot would be either at the end of Book Two Jacob or just before Bella wakes up as a vampire…

  • texxie

I used my imagination when I read the book. When it comes time for the movie, I want to see what I’ve read. IMO, the details laid out in the book in regards to the physical relationship between B/E would translate into rated R maybe a strong PG13. That’s not hardcore, that’s not what I’m looking for. I am, however, looking for them to be true to the book. I don’t believe the details of their physical relationship in the book took anything away from the love/romance aspect of the saga.

It’s not just the physical aspect of BD that would prompt a stronger rating. The delivery, imo, must deliver in the movie and not be softened to keep it kid friendly. It’s a huge part of the book and Stephanie was very graphic, I want to visually experience all of it.

    That’s just me.

  • angela

Two movies please! There is a natural division in the book, and the tone changes drastically after Bella changes. Renesme can be done; just look at Little Rascals (remake version)! Those tiny kids acted with adult precision! Also, CGI has advanced enough to make the extraordinary details doable. We need an exciting pair of movies.

  • Andrea

I agree with many people above that putting 750+ pages into one movie wouldn’t do it justice at all. You do have to read it 5 times just to remember everything. I would so sit through two 3 hour movies just for them to get the details, the love scenes/romance, special effects, vampire mass gathering, Bella’s pregnancy and Nessie correct. Take your time. I agree with others about MR and her lacking the romantic relationship between EC and BS. New Moon was so blase about their relationship and yes, there was more chemistry between Bella & Jacob. I hope they got some stuff right in Eclipse. However, none of this makes me love the movies any less. I think that RPatz has done the role of Edward total justice…everytime I read the books I immediately think of him and see him in the roles. I am so happy to see word of BD…I have been looking for anything on BD for a while now.

Informative interview! I definately feel BD should stay PG 13. There has to be plenty of love scenes and they can be done tastefully. I am anxious to see MORE of the LOVE between Edward and Bella. I think the most difficult to film and GET IT RIGHT will be Bella’s pregnancy toward the end and the birth. Also, Nessie’s growth. The cast is terrific and if they have a great director it should be fantastic. I hope they get it all together before long. The CGI has to be perfect.
I agree with Wyck’s comment “you have the emotions and the intensity of the love story — so you need somebody who’s just a wonderful director of actors”. 2 films for sure!

  • katie

okay, so it’s completely safe to say (as i feel it has been since the beginning) that there WILL be a breaking dawn. duh. haha :]
but omg i SO CANT WAIT!! it’s my favorite book!! they better make it good ;] do it justice! no more emotionlessness, kstew! lol sorry ;] she DID do better in NM. :]

  • beccalovestwilight

Iam in the middle of reading Breaking Dawn for the 7th time and love it still. I would love two movies back to back not a year a part.I really would like it in one long movie but I think to many details would be lost. The most challenging part would be the birth of beautiful Renesmee if they play it by the book. I think if they change things to much it would ruin the movie.I think that movies made after books should follow the story as close as possible to the book. When the details are changed to much it ruins the movie. The audience already has the story in the heads, it is disappointing when the book and movie do not line up.I am excited and can not wait for new moon to come out on video or for eclipse to hit theatres or especially for my favorite book of all Breaking Dawn to hit the theatres! the waiting is killing me!
