LA TIMES COUNTDOWN WILL THE SEQUELS GET MADE?

Posted November 16th, 2008 By: 18 Comments »

La Times Countdown 4 days left. The article poses a question: Will the sequels get made?

As many of you read on Friday, my former colleague and pal Steven Zeitchik at the Hollywood Reporter wrote a story about Summit Entertainment ramping up development on the next two films in the “Twilight” franchise:

The company has acquired rights to the next three novels in Stephenie Meyer’s blockbuster vampire series and has hired “Twilight” scribe Melissa Rosenberg to pen scripts based on “New Moon” and “Eclipse,” the second and third books, respectively.
Rosenberg has said that she would adapt anything Meyer writes and sources tell the Countdown that, in fact, she is already at work condensing “New Moon” into a feature-length script.

The movie’s director Catherine Hardwicke told Entertainment weekly that “Twilight” would have to gross $150 million for the studio to give a sequel the go. ”This has to be a crazy hit,” she said. ”Nobody can say that it can do that well right now.”

To put that in some perspective, the most recent “Harry Potter” film (“Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix”) grossed more than $292 million in the United States alone. And the lowest-grossing of the franchise (“Harry Potter and the Prizoner of Azkaban”) made almost $250 million in the U.S.

But the Potter movies are also considered family films, which appeal to a larger broader audience. A better comparison might be the female-skewing “Sex and the City,” which in spite of its R rating made more than $152 million domestically.

It’s not clear whether or not Hardwicke meant $150 million total (in the U.S. and abroad), but do you think “Twilight” can hit that mark? Is it a slam dunk? Are you planning to see the movie more than once to make sure “New Moon” will be brought to life?

We’ve asked this question before, and I think the answer has been a resounding yes. But we shall soon see. Are you guys just dying with excitement? I’m off to Los Angeles, try not to miss me too much.

On perezhilton.com there’s a poll asking who’s hotter? Robert Pattinson or Zac Efron.
Jut thought I’d let ya’ll know.
Oh and Rob is winning… obviously!

  • Ana

Well, this movie is already making $50 off of me alone. I’m going to the midnight showing, I’m going to the morning after mattne (srry if I spelled it wrong). My cousin wants to go later on, that’s 3, and my co-worker wants to go later on as well, that’s 4. And I have a feeling my brother wants to see it and he’ll probably ask me, so it’s a possible 5!

  • Vicki

I knew it! I HATE Zac Efron!!

  • kamokronos

Haha, Rob is winning huh? Well, no surprise there… who likes Efron (jk)? Anyways, I seriously hope this makes it. I have a feeling that it will. Just a gut feeling, but I really, really, really hope it does. And it looks great from all the trailers and previews. I’m already saving up to go at least twice (Ok, so, yeah, like I said, I’m saving up :D ). And I’m definitely dying from anticipation, if not excitement. I’m really hyped to see Twilight made into a movie :D . I have a few scenes I’d like to see especially. But yeah, god, I’m counting down on my computer, haha.

agree ana, ive already bought tickets for 3 sessions and i know that i will end up seeing it with my mum and again with my sister plus a few different groups of friends. all up i wouldnt mind betting it makes at least $100 off me lol

  • kerri

Ugh! Zac Efron looks like a girl! Rob is the most gorgeous man I’ve ever seen in my 31 years on this planet! Im not being dramatic, I really think that! Anyhoo, I think Twilight will make that and then some, IF everyone goes to see it multiple times. Im a Mum with three boys and two of them are autistic so it’s difficult for me to get out. I vow to see it atleast twice. Everyone has to make up for my lack of oppurtunity! YOU CAN DO IT, MAN!

  • Tippy

Twilight will SO gross that $150 million mark…I have no doubt. I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see it hit that before it even goes worldwide. A lot of people seem to be underestimating us Twilighters. Their mistake, LOL! They’ll see soon enough, though.
I’m already seeing it twice and I know I’ll see it at least 3 more times after that, just because the most I’ve ever seen a movie in the theater is 4 times, so I have to see Twilight at least 5, how much is that? $40 or $50? And I know LOTS and LOTS and LOTS of people who are planning on seeing it MANY times, so, yeah…Summit doesn’t need to worry too much. Twilight will make them, will Twilighters will make them ;)

Oh yeah- they are seriously asking who’s hotter between Rob Pattinson and Zac Efron? That’s not very fair to Zac, LOL!!!

my entire family will be going, including my 8 year old boy (he read the four books)am just hopin he will be allowed to watch the movie…am goin to watch it again with my officemates, and then with my friends and some relatives…hope the sequel will be made…

  • Anyanka

Absolutely. I don’t doubt at all that it will make enough to necessitate the making of New Moon. Just look at the amount of fans gathering at each event! Twilight will be huge. I hope they make The Host some day. That’d be interesting to see….

  • Twilighter

I know i am going at least 3 times the first weekend and afew times after that with more of my friends. Belive it or not, some of my guy friends read twilight and love it. they would have all gone on the 21st but it sold out before they got there tickets.

At least i have my tickets!

  • twilightfan14

I am definitely excited-already bought my ticket online for Fri. night and will probably see it again this Sun. Also, going the next weekend with a friend, who wants to see it but apparantly thinks opening weekend will be too wild-Ha Ha! I’m sure C. Hardwicke meant Twilight had to make 150 million total domestic and foreign, and I’m sure this is a “slam-dunk”, especially if it gets good word of mouth and good reviews, which I’m sure it will. I’ve been watching all the entertainment shows I can and even the hosts want to see Twilight!

  • Reika

I will be seeing it at least three times, and I know several people who will also be seeing it multiple times. I would love to know how much it’s made so far in presale tickets…

  • Bae

Its definitely going to be making some money off of me and my sister. With everything thats been surrounding Twilight for the past few months…I think it’ll be a suprise if it doesn’t break 150 million.

  • Kate

Yeah I did that poll earlier today. Rob was winning by about 66% with almost 25,000 votes.
I – of course – voted for him, but was surprised to see that he was winning by quite a large amount to someone as widely swooned-upon like Zac Efron!
But Rob is by far the hottest.

  • twilight lover

so far i have bough 6 tickets for me and friends. i plan to see the movie 3 times on the opening weekend :) :P

  • http://twilightersanonymous.com/LOS-ANGELES-TIMES-TWILIGHT-COUNTDOWN-WILL-SEQUELS-GET-MADE.HTML Twilight Mom

Look forward to New Moon being made…
Twilight will easily be grossing $150 Million ++
    no problem!

  • Shannon

I’ve already got plans to see it twice and I’m trying to finalize plans that would bring that up to 5 times. I know we can do $150 million!

  • Jezelle

ARGH! so im looking over reviews. not so good.
In my opinion the movie was great, not what i expected but way better..and the effects were amazing..not to mention all the actors(robert & kristen in particular)

IF they dont make 150$ million im donating..we should all donate.

    but i believe it will.

oooh and yes im definetly on for watching it every weekend till they dont show it anymore=D

    Who’s with me??!!
