MIDNIGHT SUN – A MONTH LATER

Posted September 30th, 2008 By: 47 Comments »

KANSASCITY.COM asks “Is anyone listening?” – good question. Fans have been writing Stephenie Meyer and Little Brown since the outcome of Midnight Sun was announced on August 28th. Now we know that the letters are being held for if/when she wants to read them. More information below:

We have pages and pages of readers’ comments urging Stephenie Meyer to please complete Midnight Sun.

A spokeswoman for her publisher, Little, Brown, said she has read our story about the leak (we’re honored!). Meyer’s agent has it, too, she said, and will forward it to her “if she feels it would be appropriate” (cross your fingers).

Officially, the publisher won’t really comment on Midnight Sun except to say:

“While no decisions have been made at this time regarding the publication of Midnight Sun, Stephenie Meyer is currently at work on other writing projects. Little, Brown looks forward to our continued publishing relationship with Stephenie Meyer and, like her many fans, we are eager to experience her next literary creation.”

SOURCE

It’s been a month since Stephenie Meyer announced she would cease writing Midnight Sun because of the leak. Do you feel any differently about Midnight Sun leak a month later? Do you still support SM’s decision?

i wish she would give some kind of answer…i feel in the dark kind of like shes just ignoring the big elephant in the room

  • rocket

I still think this is a ploy and that she will finish it. I hate to say that I do however think it will not be with her current publishing company. I think the book is finished and the leak may or may not be valid (as in intentional). Don’t throw tomatoes at me. I think Stephenie is taking a much needed creative break from vampires as she has said she wanted many times before. I think she has already finished midnight sun and will end up publishing it. The reason I think this is that it is just way too much of a coinky dink that she let loose the first 12 chapters and happened to have only completed up to the most exciting and anticipated part of Midnight sun. This is whetting the whistles of all Twiight fans and getting enough press to where a publishing bidding war is sure to ensue. I think it is well played by Stephenie as far as a plublicity stand point.

  • http://www.sweet-catastrophe.com Jade

I still understand why she feels the way she does, but I wish she’d explore those feelings and move past them. Sure, it sucked, but having part of it leak doesn’t really change anything, it’s just like an extended trailer to get everyone even more psyched.

If it had been the WHOLE book that had leaked, without any changes, editing, etc, I could see not continuing, but it was maybe half.

  • Emmy

    I still support her decision.

I’m not saying I don’t want it published, because I really do, but I won’t read it until she does publish it.

  • tor

“Little, Brown looks forward to our continued publishing relationship with Stephenie Meyer…”
    Translation:
    “We love her money.”

  • Joanne Maria

I support Steph- and pray that she is doing well, but I still hope and pray that she will complete and publish Midnight Sun…

  • Bella

I was so sad when Stephenie announced she was shelving MS for now. I understand from a creative perspective that she feels violated, having had her personal work stolen (for lack of a better word) and published on the internet. Of course, no one is profitting from this theft; it only served to whet the appetites of her already rabid fans for more, more, more. We don’t see the “flaws” she said are in it. We just see the wonderful story we are obsessed with. That being said, I believe it is unfair to her loyal readers to effectively punish us for something we did not personally do. I didn’t even know about the leak until she announced it herself on her website. I know many are abiding with her wishes and are refusing to even read what she has posted. I just hope she calms down enough to realize that she is hurting the wrong people. Yes, she has been wronged but not by her legions of fans.

  • kerri

Even though Stephanie considered Midnight Sum flawed, it was deeply interseting to read. Edwards version of things verses Bellas was night and day. The sweet moments like Port Angeles were twisted around in Edwards version. His internal struggles and dark moments are so intriuging that I almost cried when the story stopped at the Meadow. I so wanted to feel his emotions when Bella freaked him out, when he touched her, smelled her, fought his instinct to kill her! I will buy ten copies if she wrote the whole book. It would be far more interesting then the original. Edward needs a voice. I dont care about Jacob Black really, but Edward and his family are the vital pulse of the story!

  • Sara-Liz

I’m in complete and total agreement with Bella’s comment on this one. I can totally understand from a creative perspective that not only does she feel violated, but feeling so has altered her mood to a place where it angers or hurts her to keep writing. I can totally understand the walking away part, and hope it’s not permanent. I wouldn’t be able to focus or concentrate, either, with such a betrayal in the front of my mind (whether it was intentional or not)

At the same time, however, I do also feel that she is indirectly punishing her fans. We have nothing but love, support, and admiration for Stephenie and the literary world she has created for us. It is certainly not out fault that such a thing happened, and none of us would have wished it on her. All she’s doing by walking away is feeding the vicious crap that whoever leaked intended.

While I understand her feelings, I wish she would realize that she’s only giving into those poor intentions of whoever it was that did it. Or maybe she does, and hence all the secrecy. Maybe she doesn’t know what to do, and that’s why we haven’t heard anything yet.

I am definitely in agreement that Midnight Sun cut off at an awfully convenient place (of course, I couldn’t stop myself from reading it when she posted it to her site) Fans who have read what there is are thoroughly crazed, appetites for this universe whetted once again. However, I’m trying not to keep my hopes up. I don’t think fans could handle another such letdown…but it may or may not be coming.

    =/

  • Laney

This is probably going to come across/be taken wrong by a lot of people, but I think Stephenie needs to open her eyes. She is allowing whoever hurt her to hurt her fans by doing this. You’re right, Bella, it’s not fair on any level. I understand, but I definitely don’t like it. We’ve stood up for her through all of this, and now we find it she isn’t even reading our letters? They’re being held for IF or WHEN she wants them?

I don’t like feeling this way at all, but a small part of me wonders why we continue to stand up for her, when she isnt standing up for us.

  • Rae

Does is tick anyone off as much as it does me that she isn’t even reading the mail from her fans? That they’re being held for if/when she wants them? I agree, why are we pouring out so much support for her, when she cant be bothered?

  • Jesse

I read the Midnight Sun, On Stephenie’s website, and It isn’t flawed at all. It is perfect. Edward is my favorite character, and seeing inside his mind, and his interpretation of the story is amazing. I am really looking forward to it. I feel deprived as well, afraid she wont finish it, or it will be on hold and take to long to be released. I can see how it is painful to her or dissapointing. But so many of us.. want that book so much, yes maybe to her its bitterness cause she wanted it as a surprise for her fans.. BUT for the ones that read it.. its amazing and I just wish she would decide to get to work on it and get it out there. For her fans.

  • Alexandra

I stillc ompletely support Stephenie and her desicion and I also completely disagree that she hasn’t given us an “answer” because she did; that she isn’t workign on MS until she feels ready to. IF that takes year then thats that, its her book that many “fans” violated.

  • VanessaC

I am in agreement w/Emmy, Joanne Maria, and Alexandra on this issue- and my only feelings about it that have changed at all since it first got announced, is the fact that I am finding it increasingly difficult to resist reading the leaked chapters that Stephenie posted- you see, when I first got the news I knew there was NO WAY I was gonna read the leaked chapters, b/c even though I wanted to, it did not feel right at all to me- therefore, I didn’t even waver in making the decision to wait for the real thing (if it ever comes) to read it. However, as time goes on, and more and more ppl are talking about how great the 12 chapters are, I am finding it increasingly difficult to resist the temptation- probably not helped by the fact that i reread the first chapter which SM originally posted the other day- I thought that my help to satiate my thirst, but instead it only whet my appetite for more- making the temptation even HARDER to resist. I am trying to stay strong, but I dont know how much longer I can last… so my feelings in regards to reading the leaked chapters have changed slightly, but other than that, my feelings remain the same.

  • Morgan

A month later, and I still support Stephenie Meyer like I did when this whole thing started. I still wish that she would finish it but again betrayal by her fans and others was so horrible, that I have to agree with her decision. It would be great if she reconsidered but if not then that’s fine. I have my imagination to help me, although it’s NOTHING like the real thing. I also would love to point out that I have yet to read what Stephenie has aloud us to read. I refuse to read Midnight Sun until it hits the shelves, but until then, I’ll be patient.

  • Kristin

At first I felt bad for her. I mean she was betrayed by someone she trusted. I do feel like she is punishing her fans. WE didn’t do this. Someone that SHE entrusted did. She isn’t reading our letters and I feel like she is sort of blaming us for this leak. I didn’t know about it until she put it on her site. People are still going to buy the book. We already know the story. Yet all of us on the day it comes out (if it does) will be there buying copies or multiple copies. We won’t not buy it despite reading it on the internet. I feel she is punishing us for something that is not our fault.

  • Chelsea

I would laugh if she straight up published it. Making it a big surprise to all of us.
    (:
Ha, I think I’m just hoping for that.

  • Laura

I’m hoping her next literary creation is Midnight Sun! I’d really appreciate hearing if Stephenie has read any of the letters and what she thinks of them. I know a lot of ppl wrote letters to her in support of Midnight Sun! I hope she changes her mind, or at least lets us in on how she’s feeling…something!

  • http://www.youtube.com/cheychey6678 Chey Cullen

Well, I love Stephenie, but she’s been like blowing us off lately. She’s keeping us in the attic like in that one book and we’re all going crazy. She needs to let us know what the heck is going on instead of distracting us with shiny new crappy music videos and new songs for the Twilight album. She’s avoiding our questions and leaving us out! We deserve better! We’ve showed her support and now she needs needs to give us answers! It’s not right and it’s mean! I know she’s been through a lot but how long ago was it?? She still can’t have hard feelings about the whole thing can she? I feel she should have made her decision by now…. I’m sorry but that’s my opinion.

  • Bellabelleza

    I totally agree with Rocket.

I am such a big believer in publicity. I think it’s everywhere in the entertainment industry. I also think it’s quite coincidental that the movie is about a month away from premiering and all these rumors and drama suddenly crop up. But, it’s no coincidence, it’s exactly as Rocket said…
I haven’t read the chapters myself, and I honestly don’t know if I can bear to be left hanging again. I just finished Breaking Dawn and it ended giving me plenty of satisfaction… for the moment. I am sure I’ll end up reading them though, and then just have to wait patiently until she releases Midnight Sun, as I am sure, she will. At least I hope so, but getting us talking about it is the point entirely.

  • Tina

I wish it would have made it through the meadow… Seriously though, I understand why she’s upset, she does have the ultimate rights to all of her work. But she’s also said in an interview that she kind of regrets not writing it from Edward’s view in the first place because she thought it was more fun from the eyes of the vamp. I just don’t understand why she wouldn’t want to share that with her fans? (Who were not trying to hurt her.) She created this world that we are all wrapped up in and we thought SHE was sharing a sneek peek… had it been released with the headline “I STOLE THIS FROM STEPHENIE MEYER” I bet a lot less people would have read on……

  • cheekabubble

i wish that stepinie myere will publish midnight sun i love the twilight books and i really want this book to come out.i know that its hard to wright a book when your mad but she has so maney fans that she should publish it. if she dosnt she will break my hart

  • sivsters

i support SM’s decision. i think if i were a writer and someone i trusted released my personal unfinished story without my consent, i’d be super pissed off and hurt and probably would put it on hold too. why should she release something when she’s not ready? she’ll finish it and release it when she feels she is over the hurt and betrayal. as fans, we should be patient and happy that she’s even writing a 5th book in the first place.

  • http://bellacullen17.webs.com BellaCullen17

I understand Stephenie’s decision, but I would really love if she changed her mind and published Midnight Sun, I think it’s a beautiful book and it deserves to be read. So I support Stephenie Meyer, but not the decision to stop writing MS.

  • chey

i refuse to read the online copy.
i really want stephenie to publish it, butt i support her decison to wait
if it was me i wouldnt want to publish my book after someone leaked a copy out online

  • EdwardsJewels

I just wish that she would stop messin with everyone and let us know. I do understand that she feels violated in a way, but what does she expect??? She’s the biggest writer since J.K. Rowling, and this is the biggest series other than Harry Potter. She should just finish the book (and the rest according to Edward… i know wishful thinking) and just prove that she can’t be stopped. Finish on top, and us the fans can have a new thing to obsess about!!!

  • Midori

I understand Stephenie’s feelings on finishing the book, however I believe she should get past it and move on. I think she should finish the book because there are alot of fans out there who would be so interested in reading Edward’s point of view. Seeing the story from a vampires point of view, would be so different than from Bella’s view. She sees him so differently than he sees himself. You would see the love aspect through his eyes and the loneliness he has endured through the century looking for a soul mate.

  • Alissa

I totally understand how P.O.’ed Stephenie much have been & her decision to stop writing.

It’s 2008 and a leak is bound to happen sooner or later. Never fails.
So if she decides not to publish it, I WILL be pissed – along with millions of other fans, I’m sure.
Ugh, the suspense is killing me. D:

  • Mariea

Well…as a new fan to the series, who read all four books in 10 days (hey I do have a life…lol), I was freaked when I found out that there may be another book. I went seaching for more info on it and was so disappointed that she is not going to be finishing it because someone leaked it.

While I agree it was wrong of the person to do so, I did read the leaked chapters on Stephenies’ website and OMG! OMG! OMG! I loved the story from Edward’s POV!

I think that she would be doing a disservice to her fans if she doesn’t continue to write and publish it. In fact, I would love to see all 4 books written from his POV. I’d buy them in a heartbeat.

  • Lauren

I can understand why Stephenie Meyer would be angry about this, but I still think she should publish it. I read Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn in 4 days and crave for more. I do admit I read the chapters of Midnight Sun on her website. It was amazing. I love the story from Edward’s POV and really think it adds to him as a character. I will be disappointed if she decides not to publish. Not just because I think it would be great for her, but Midnight Sun is a way for Twilight fans to develop Edward in their minds. Midnight Sun doesn’t seem optional to me, it seems necessary. However, I totally understand why Stephenie needs some time to think it over.

  • Erica

    I understand Stephenie’s decision 100%
But I also think that she should feel honored that so many of her fans have been so eager to continue on with her characters.
To leave her work unfinished is almost to slap the people in the face who have helped you become who you are.

  • Edwards_sweetie

I have mixed feelings about this. When I was on her website, and I read her posting before it was leaked, she was SOOOO EXCITED about this story!! And then reading to more recent posts, I could feel her heartbreak. And I honstly don’t think it would hurt sales at all, because it’s sooo GOOD. And soo appropriate for her to write this after finishing Breaking Dawn – we know how vampires feel, and what their cravings are etc after watching Bella. Anyways, I went on to read the version she posted and I swear, it was like reading Twilight for the first time. After I finished it, I actually went back to read twilight again, and it was like the light finally shined. I understand Stephenie Meyers’ feelings of betrayal and mistrust, because she wouldn’t just give the manuscript to anyone (almost like she was cheated on…and that takes awhile to get over). But I think in the end she will have to publish it – not only for us, but for herself because it’s a fabulous piece of work.

Also, after the movie comes out, I think she’ll take another look at it and re-evaluate; she’s probably crazy busy right now with promotions and stuff, not to mention that her sales will probably spike and then Christmas will be just around the corner…so I’m thinking we’ll hear something about this again in the New Year.

And I would LOOOOVE to have another book continuing from Breaking Dawn…I don’t know where it would go, and I think the Saga ended really well, but I can’t help wanting more :) (or even if she rewrote the entire series in Edward’s point of view…that would be simply amazing!!)

  • sadie

I 100% agree with everyone on these comments it really and truly sucks that her new project was leaked and me personly have not read the online version….i will buy it when the time comes..if it does and i really want it to….if SM was to ever read these please please please consider restarting the project all your fans would love that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Because i love the electricty between bella and edward..i cant wait to be able to feel what edward felt toward bella in the beginning before he found out he loved her!!!!
I REALLY HOPE SHE FINISHES THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://www.tasfiya-lol.piczo.com artistic girl

i so think whoevr leaked this story…did an unforgivable mistake!

  • Lori

I understand how upsetting Stephanie must feel however it has been leaked and as her fans and her biggest supporters I really think she needs to move on and bring this book to the table for us. I’m a mother of four and this has been a fantasy series to read and get lost in. I love reading all the books but I was so sad when I finished Breaking Dawn because there would not be another book to read with Bella and Edward and this great family.

  • Chris

I can’t believe that someone would spoil such a wonderful thing Stephanie had going. If she reads these postings I hope she knows how much she’s touched people with the wonderful writing she does. I can’t put the 4 books down. I would really love to know Edwards point of view of how, why and when he actually fell in love with Bella. Just to let her know my loyalty to her writing and her talents I will NOT go looking for the manuscript until it is published, legally. PLEASE reconsider finishing it, Stephanie!

  • CullenGirl14

I totally agree with rocket to.

Stephenie needs some time to just sit back and chill. She will though propably finish wrighting in a couple of years so all of u people freaking out just CHILLAX!!

  • http://idk nicole

..XD..you should really keep writing the book midnight sun just because you are a great author your like the best i have ever meet your books are awsome so please if u get this comment please start wrighting midnight sun again please…do it for your fans that love you like me…XD

  • vanessa

It is March 2009 so I don’t know if anything has changed. I should have gone to her website before posting here!lol Anyways, I read the first chapter and it does pull you in and make the Twilight story so facinating simply by writing it through the vampire Edward’s eyes. Someone posted somewhere else online that it was a waste for anyone to buy this book if it becomes available because it is just Twilight with a different title. I couldn’t dissagree more. Bella is humane and doesn’t have all those inner struggles that Edward does and she can’t hear everyone else’s thoughts. Edward gets to be every fans personal spy taking a peak into all the characters heads. Listening in on Jessica’s thoughts was so entertaining and not to mention Edward’s siblings! Edward is the one that can truly paint a full picture because there are no secrets kept from him accept for Bella and we already know her story! Stephanie please release this novel when you are ready because your stories give so many fans great enjoyment and that has to feel good for you too!

  • Jennifer

I think she should finish writing Midnight Sun. From what I read on her website it’s simply amazing, and it seriously is like reading Twilight for the first time. I can understand how devastating it must’ve been to find out that someone she trusted leaked the draft out to the public before it was completed, which is down right dirty! Even having read the draft she posted on her website, it’s worth the buy, just to be able to read it over and over. After all, the best books are the ones that you can read over and over and it’s still like reading it for the firs time. Same anticipation, same excitement. I hope she decides to take all of her fans opinions to heart, and consider completeing Midnight Sun…although if she re-did all of the books in Edwards eyes, that would be absolutely amazing. But hey, at this point no one really knows what’s she’s deciding to do…maybe she’s already made her decision and she just doesn’t want another leak…who knows???

  • dina

publish it already..ive read the online half of midnight sun.AMAZING.please publish it its better than twilight from bellas version.haha.i mean its been like about a year cause its JUNE 2009

  • DeLena

Please finish the book already..at leat give us information on when it’s comig out.And im hoping that you will make a the whole series in Edward’s version…but that might be too much work…

  • dina

the comment under me is so true.it would be so cool to read it all in edwards version..but i saw on some site that she was writing not writing the twilight book in edwards version but instead writing a fifth book from edwards point of view and then then planning on writing one from renesmees after that and then even one one from carlisle after that but i seriously just hope she writes edwards version of all 4 books..but i read that on a website dated august 2008 which is like just a monthe after it leaked edwards version of twilight..i just dont know why after a year no one has said anythong i mean it june 2008.give us some info. and i mean if stephenie meyer is working on midnight sun then just tell us.

  • Kayla

I think this is so unfair that the “tweens” are getting their twilight fix with the movies (not sayin they are bad I just prefer the books is all) but what about the rest of us we did nothing I am one of those who are respecting Stephs wishes and yet I feel as if I am getting punished for something none of us could have prevented thats all I’m sayin

  • Amber

Just leave stephanie alone! she wont write if she feels like she has to let her feel good and find the connection with her charaters that she fell in love with again if we keep pushing her to finish it, it wont come out like twilight, new moon, elipse, and breaking dawn did they all had a connection something to love dont we want that with midnight sun? let her find the connection! JUST LEAVE HER ALONE ABOUT IT OR IT WILL NEVER COME OUT!!! how hard is that???

  • Iesha

Hi, Stephanie Mayer i am sad that you chose not to finish the book:MIdnightsun. i am a huge fan of yours i believe that it is great you are buting Twilight in Edwards prospective. I think you should finish the book after Eclipse comes out in theaters. i am sorry that your book was leaked out but i think you souldn’t punish your beloved readers and i think you also souldn’t but breaking dawn to fare apart on the released dates i mean in the start of the year 2011 for part 1 is fine but not at the end of the year for part 2 not a good idea. maybe in the summer of the year 2011 is fine.
