CHRIS WEITZ FINDS THE CURE FOR ROBERT PATTINSON WITHDRAWAL

Posted August 24th, 2009 By: Team Switzerland 14 Comments »

Last month at Comic Con, MTV got the opportunity to sit down with New Moon director Chris Weitz to ask some great new questions. In this new interview, Chris explains how the scenes from Comic Con fit into the film, how he balanced the need to stay true to the book and the need to focus on the stars we love, how much CGI we can expect in the film, and more:

MTV: You revealed two scenes that were a big hit at Comic-Con. How do they fit into the movie?

Chris Weitz: We showed two new scenes, and each one focused on abdominal muscles. That was the high point, I think, for the audience. [Laughs.] One scene was the one in which Jacob is teaching Bella how to ride a motorcycle. She falls, he comes to rescue her and dab her forehead — thereby revealing his bodacious abs and chest. And the other is Bella rushing to save Edward when he decides to commit suicide by revealing himself to the humans in Volterra, Italy.

MTV: You’re in the unenviable position of needing to stay true to the source material but also needing to find more screen time for one of the world’s biggest movie stars. How did you go about doing that?

Weitz: [We wanted to avoid] just randomly inserting Rob throughout the movie in a back-at-the-ranch sort of way, which would just be about box office and us being worried about whether people would deal with the darkness of the second book. People are actually very ready for [the dark] aspect of it. What we basically did was to take the aural hallucinations that Bella has of Edward and turn them into visual hallucinations. But I wanted to do them very subtly — so that it wasn’t whacking you over the head with CGI — and to give you the sense that you have when you are broken up with and when you are really longing for someone. They are both not there at all and there all the time. And so, the notion that you have of someone’s presence as absence is what we’re portraying. You’ll see quite a lot of Rob in the film, but it’s seen subjectively, through Bella’s eyes. It’s also in dreams that she has of him as well. It strikes this very fine balance between too much Rob and too little Rob.

MTV: For a lot of fans, there’s no such thing.

Weitz: Well, I know for a lot of people there’s no such thing as too much Rob. But we’ve got a nice dose of Taylor to sweeten any Rob deficiencies. It is a disease that can only be treated with Vitamin T, for Taylor.

You cannot fill the absence of one person with the presence of another. The other may create his/her own space, but not fulfill the need for the absent one. In other words, Jacob (Taylor) cannot replace Edward (Robert). He is a distraction for Bella, a means to access dangerous activities so as to trigger Edward’s voice of warning, but he is not the one she wants to be with.

  • Gabriella

I think she’s so unfair using Jacob as a “step”.

  • Chelle

“thereby revealing his bodacious abs and chest” – almost choked on my soymilk reading that, really should know by now not to have any kind of food in my mouth when reading CW interviews.

Anyhow, vitamin T, hahah, as much as I think Taylor is adorable, I still prefer the vitamin R… but still so excited to see NM, esp the cliff diving, that’s one of my top 3 favorite scenes in the book! 13 weeks! When you put it that way, doesn’t seem too much of a wait. Thank goodness for the Eclipse production to keep our addiction satisfied.

Yes,yes, yes, we are going to see some of Alice’s visions aaaaaahhhhhhhh. I so love that man. He really thinks of reader and staying true to the story, and I can’t wait to see this MOVIE.
Yes Chris we are ready for the dark aspects of this movie …….we are ssoooo ready for this movie, period. THUD.
Normally I would never say there’s no such thing as too much Edward/Rob, but in this case too much would mean not missing Edward, but just a little peak at him every now and then will be okay with me.
Nice interview…… but no need for any Vitamin T for me.

  • Chelle

Gosh Marianne, I’m so hoping they show Rob’s reaction during that ill fated phone call, I’m so going to cry seeing that! And also snippets of his agony in Italy would be great addition to the movie(not that I want to see him tortured).

  • Chris

Chris just kills me. He’s so funny. Love how down to earth he is and how obvious it is that he cares that the movie is as close to the book as possible.

VITAMIN T! hahahaha – Move over Edward, BIG T is moving in on your territory.

  • http://twilightersanonymous Marianne

I know Chelle, Chris mentioned Bella’s dreams, seeing Edward in them and if we see some of Alice’s visions I hope we see the phone call from Rosalie too. I really like how CW has figured out the little but oh so important parts of the story.
Yes, 13 weeks sounds easier to handle, I can’t believe we are all wishing away our lives so we can see these movies.

There is no replacing Rob and as far as I am concerned. When it comes to putting up with ‘vitamin T’ as Chris calls it, I would rather pass. Taylor gets on my nerves and I never liked Jacob in the books anyway.

Great interview. I’ve was delighted when Chris was announced as the director for New Moon & he hasnt let us the fans down. Summit bring him back for Breaking dawn & Yes do make it into 2 movies. Sorry Taylor fans but no amount of Vitamin T could do it for me.

  • Midori

I agree with Judy, you cannot replace Edward with Taylor. Taylor IS a mere distraction for Bella. I think the worse thing that Taylor did to himself was to buff himself up. I’m not crazy about guys who think they have to go to extremes to win a girl or to get a part. Taylor looked great in Twiight for a 17 year old. Now, his body is bigger than his head (no offense Taylor). However, he is a good actor.

As for Chris, a wonderful personaliy and so funny! I’m sure he did an awesome job on New Moon. Looking forward to it! I’ve seen Twilight more than eight times. I believe New Moon will be less than five time,
since majority of the movie is between Bella and Jake.

Well, I am a Chris FAN. I am happy he inserted Rob in more scenes. When I read the book, I imagine him in my mind so we should see that. I admire Taylor for
“buffing it up”. He is perfect for the part and that is what it called for. Perhaps it would not have been his choice. Hard work! Bella actually does love Jacob too only in a different way. She would have ended up with him if Edward never came back. I AM FOR EDWARD!!! Love him.
I hope they bring Chris back for Breaking Dawn. There is soooooo much in that very important book, I think it should be 2 movies. Makes sense to me. : )

  • taylor

Midori wat do u mean it was worse for him to buff up, he had to in order to git his appearance right because as i recall jacob did git bigger in new moon wen bella first saw him so i thought that was a good move to show his dedication and to fit the description in the book

Chelle, lol….. no food in mouth when logged onto TA, I‘ll have to remember that…
and only ever Vitamin R for me and of course a peak at Edward, that has to be good..
I know I will cry as well , OMG if they do show Edward reaction during the “ill fated” phone call . Well, I think I will tear up anyway as soon as soon as the light go down and “The Summit Logo “appears on the big screen. 85 days to go …
I think Kleenex should sell tissues at every New Moon screening , they would make a fortune….

My big thing is Rob/Edward. I love them both, but I want to go through this movie like Bella does. I want to be missing Edward, and I want to feel empty like she does. There is never such a thing as too much Edward/Rob, but I want to miss him. If there is more then there should be of him it won’t follow the story. But this movie needs to hurry up already!!
