MTV: HOW TO SELL ‘ECLIPSE’ TO A WIDER AUDIENCE

Posted December 2nd, 2009 By: Evie 13 Comments »

MTV has an interesting look at how they think Eclipse could gain an even larger audience following than either Twilight or New Moon, if they followed five suggestions. Read more below:

Amp up the Bella and Edward romance

“Twilight” established the potent romance between Bella and Edward, but “New Moon” sacrificed much of the chemistry for the sake of Bella’s growing bond with Jacob. Granted, the reason why Edward was mostly absent during “New Moon” was because he broke up with Bella and was moping around in an apartment for months on end, but Chris Weitz forgot to reestablish why exactly Bella and Edward were so in love. With “Eclipse,” we hope David Slade explores their connection, especially with so many fans jumping ship to Team Jacob after seeing Taylor Lautner’s abs.

Expand the secondary characters

Even though Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner are the biggest draws for most fans, secondary characters like Anna Kendrick’s Jessica, Mike Welch’s Mike Newton, Dakota Fanning’s Jane and Michael Sheen’s Aro were key to some of the most fun parts of “New Moon.” “Eclipse” introduces a whole slew of new characters (Riley and Leah, anyone?) and we hope some of the old favorites aren’t sacrificed for the new, especially with Anna Kendrick’s potential Oscar win for “Up in the Air.” Plus, there’s the fact that the scenes in which Bella interacts with humans (like her father, played by Billy Burke, and the high school students) are some of the most interesting and well-acted in the series thus far.

Make the fight scenes more action-packed

Yes, we understand that a lot of care went into making the CGI werewolves in “New Moon,” and thank goodness the fight scenes in the second “Twilight” installment were better than the first, but the final battle in “Eclipse” is the most action-packed part of the entire “Twilight Saga.” With David Slade’s previous vampire film “30 Days of Night” under his belt, we can expect some intense action, but we’d like to remind him we want to see some newborn vamps being torn limb from limb anyways (and not just in slow motion).

Read the last two ideas here.

Do you agree or disagree with these ideas? Do you think Eclipse needs a wider audience?

agree X1000! Great article. Can’t wait to see what Eclipse turns out like!

I totally agree with this article. Especially don’t forget to focus on the Bella & Edward romance. That’s what this story is all about! Please don’t forget that DS. Especially the official proposal. I want to know and feel the love and passion in the book on the big screen.

I agree, I don’t agree, then back to…umm…I agree! lol I’m torn really. I love Twilight the movie SEPERATE from the book, if that makes sense. I did’nt feel the book was “respected” as much as it should have been. New Moon on the other hand was much more true to the book (thanks Chris!) but I agree with the comment about the ending being rushed. I got that sense as well.

Eclipse is my fave of the four so I am especially nervous about whatever David Slade did w/it. I’ll give Chris a break because New Moon was, indeed, more Jacob’s book but imo, the very best of that book was from Italy on, he should have given us another 20 minutes at the end.

    Umm…is it June yet? :)

totally, totally agree! :D in fact, i couldn’t have said it better myself!

Evie, you hit on some amazing points. but have you taken into account the film is in post-production, meaning, your suggestions are a little late.

Can MTV send this article to Summit please! They got it right! Edward and Bella’s love WAS NOT re-emphasised in NM! So people who haven’t read the books were like “I don’t get it what as the big deal about the whole Edward and Bella thing” Cos it wasn’t emphasised in NM! Their reunion was rushed and made out to be like no big deal! Like Bella’s depressing was just a little side show or something! PLEASE AMP UP THE EDWARD AND BELLA LOVE FOR ECLIPSE!

  • Jess

AGREE a BILLION TIMES!!!! They showed the appropriate amount of Edward in the visions BUT when he returned they should have made the reunion scene EPIC! To make the audience feel like “OH MY GOD THEY ARE SOOOO IN LOVE!” like in Twilight! But nooo it was like “OK SO WHY WAS BELLA MOPPING OVER THIS EDWARD GUY IN THE FIRST PLACE?” Someone please send RM a link to this article! They were obsessed with making Jacob a nice guy in NM instead of the nasty that he is in the book!

  • justine

AMP UP The Edward and Bella love?? YES PLEASE!!! Edward and Bella are the HEART and SOUL of The Twilight Phenomenon! Not Jacob! Not the minor characters! So without emphasising or amping Edward and Bella’s love in all the movies, they are missing the whole amazing HEART of the books and what we feel in love with when reading it! Without Edward and Bella there is no Twilight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Larissa

I do hope they show more of Edward and Bella’s romance. I agree that a lot of people seem to have gone to Team Jacob after seeing the abs. Yes they are nice, but come on, that’s not a good reason to want Bella and Jacob together. I really hope that they show Edward and Bella’s love and why they love each other.

  • Evie

    I didn’t actually write the article ;)
It’s written by staff at MTV, I’m just passing it along.

I agree with you all, the romance and love between Edward and Bella is THE story, and to make it second to Taylor’s abs will be enough to make me cry.
Don’t get me wrong, I did love New Moon, but Eclipse has to be THE defining moment when it’s shown and felt that Bella and Edward can not be without each other and she loves HIM more than anything else.
They have to stop trying to make the audience feel sorry for Jacob more than they show how much Edward loves Bella. Jacob is the secondary part of the story, Edward and Bella are the primary part!!!

We want to REALLY feel the romance, stop trying to attract more guys and show us what we read about in the books.

I so agree with the other comments made as far as it relates to Edward and Bella’s relationship. The RECONCILIATION of Bella and Edward was one third of the end of the book. It should have had that same respect at the end of the movie. I was waiting for the emotional climax at the end of the movie, when they both reunite, with all the wonderful dialogue. I wanted to see the heat and hear the beautiful words on screen that Bella and Edward say to each other that was in the book, it explained the whole reason for his leaving and it sets up the story in Eclipse we could have used another 10-20 more minutes. In this regard I was left TEASED and UNSATISFIED wanting more. Chris Weitz and Melissa so dropped the ball on this. I SOOOO hope David Slade gives us all the intense scenes between Bella and Edward that was in the book. As a fan of Twilight I don’t want to see another (30 Days of Night, Blade, Interview with a Vampire, Underworld) the typical vampire movie, we have those. The fans who want that type of movie rent it. Just DO THE BOOK…..PLEASE. Don’t disguise Eclipse or Breaking Dawn and sacrifice a wonderful story you have a HUGE audience keep us happy. We will keep coming back for the emotional love story scenes. Remember the 47 second kissing scene leaked on U Tube, It got millions of hits. SHOW US THE LOVE…..

  • Ciera

I honestly don’t think twilight needs a larger fan group…theres already millions of us…why have more people go opening night taking away seats from the real fans?
