MTV MOVIES BLOG: ‘ECLIPSE’ MOVIE RELEASE DATE PROS AND CONS
MTV Movies Blog has done a short little breakdown of the pros and cons that the ‘Eclipse’ movie will face with it’s short turnaround and it’s reported release date:
Okay, Twilighters, here’s the good news: You’ve made it to prime time. The release date is in late June, prime tentpole territory typically reserved for the likes of Will Smith, superheroes and hundred-million-dollar Michael Bay movies. No more of these November, let’s-hope-we-catch-the-teens-while-they’re-home-for-the-holidays release dates for you guys. In fact, a quick peek at the 2010 release schedule shows that “Eclipse” will be butting heads with such heavyweights as “Prince of Persia,” “Toy Story 3” and Jackson Rathbone’s “The Last Airbender.”Unfortunately, there’s also some bad news: Eyebrows were raised among the fans when the “New Moon” release date was announced as being a year after “Twilight” arrived in theaters. Now, “Eclipse” will hit screens a mere seven months after “New Moon.” Figuring in the roughly three months that Chris Weitz required to prepare the second film, that gives the director of the third movie barely four months to shoot it, edit it, get the special effects up to speed and put the film in theaters.
Of course, if a director other than Weitz is chosen to film “Eclipse,” he or she could have longer to prepare the movie. But any “Twilight” fan would be right to be a bit concerned about the new date – because, as Hollywood has shown us time and time again, hastily-made sequels like “Legally Blonde 2,” “Conan the Destroyer” and the “Saw” films often, well, suck.
The advantage of “Eclipse,” obviously, is that the text is already written – and amongst the Twilighters, it’s perfect just as it is.
(Thanks Olga)
The movies that are scheduled to come out around the same time as ‘Eclipse’ are pretty big. I wonder if those will prove to be fair competition for the film, or if ‘Eclipse’ will blow them all away. I am still hesitant about such a close release date, but I agree with MTV in the sense that the story is essentially already written.
What do you think about the movies that ‘Eclipse’ is slotted to come out against? Do they worry you or not? And what about the release date - did any of MTV’s pros or cons make you more worried or more at ease about the quality of the film?

Well, let’s hope for Lord of the Rings karma, ok? The Return of the King was brilliant. And heck, Harry Potter movies always do well. What do they have in common? The BOOKS! So I for one, am hopeful.
That is a little worrying. What if Chris does an awesome job, we’d want him to come back for Eclipse. Why wouldn’t they just do a back to back filming with the same director, that would make more sense.
hmmmmmm
yeah, i’m not concerned. the 3rd director will be prepping while the 2nd is being shot. that provides a really unique opportunity for him or her. they’ll get to stop at the set and see the actors in action–imagine having that to include to your visualization. anyway, i think we should just let summit do their thing…they do have more experience in movies than any of us.
it’s all so exciting!
Hey, i was wondering if there is going to be auditions for Eclipse?… and if there are when and were would they be held.??? please let me know THANK YOU.

I’m not sure how I feel about such a quick turn around date I mean I’m excited I won’t have to wait long but really 7 months is like the blink of an eye in movie time, but we all know the whole cast are great actors and will hopefully be able to pull it off. I just don’t want a bad movie but I guess we’ll have to wait and see what the NEW director comes up with. Let’s all keep our fingers crossed :/
$20 says they push the date ahead. Movies are constantly being announced and moved around. We shall see. From a business perspective…I can kind of see why they’re putting the films so close..because they want to keep fans watching. Too long of a delay and they might “lose” people. Me? I’d make the movies every year and a half/two years and build the frenzy (I run a movie theater) of the movie. I get at least 2-3 inquiries a DAY asking if we’re gonna have New Moon. I think they’re playing this a tad too close to the vest if you ask me…push New Moon forward and make Eclipse a year later…
Although…the movie biz is gaining money even though the economy is horrible.
I’m actually worried, even scared…why are they pushing them so close? I’m just so afraid they are going to ruin them. Catherine is right by saying no because it’s a process to make quality movies and I get the feeling that now that they made so much money with it they’re making commercial and forgetting the true reason we all love this story. THIS particular story needs attention to detail and I don’t think they are going to get it right like this. Argh!!The more I think about it, it just keeps getting worse in my mind….I’m rooting for them to get it right but I am so worried.
i love the idea of eclipse being so close to new moon (the wait is unbearable)but it beter be a darn good movie if they arent filming BD
I just hope they do both of the books justice, if they do then the films will be the best ever, anybody heard anything about when or if there going to make breaking dawn into a movie..
I definitely think that they are moving way too fast. I don’t think they’re thinking about the quality of the move as much, as putting out the movies quickly. I know their worried about how much time they have, becuase of Rob aging.
Does anyone know if Kristen and Rob hav committed to doing Eclipse and Breaking Dawn? It would be good without them..
i’m nervous. they could potentially ruin this series. if they were filming back to back it might be different, theres so many things that should be considered. they can’t just push all theses movies out. b/c the fans want *great* movies, no matter how long it takes. i’d rather wait a 1 1/2 for eclipse even new moon, if the special effects and things were all x10 better.
YAY!!!!!! I love that eclipce will be coming 7 monthes after! Rob and Kristan can definitly pull it off! Can’t wait! TEAM EDWARD FOREVER!!!!!
Does anybody agree with me?
I really want these movies to just get better and better, but I’m starting to think they’re just going to be mediocre. I want them to stand alone as GREAT movies, (not something I think Twilight was able to do)but I think it’s just going to be something that will only be able to REALLY be appreciated by S.Meyer fans… That makes me sad…:(
Do we know for a fact that the script is already written?
Let’s not forget that the third Pirates of the Caribbean was released ten months after the second. (Not sure if they filmed back to back though)
BOYCOTT
Isn’t anyone else angry?! Summit continues to take the material and wring it for every last drop of cash they can with little care for consequences! Well, it matters if I refuse to give them my $10! I hate it for the cast and crew. I really do. They can’t be happy about it. This does, however, explain why casting news has been held up. Gotta make sure you’re casting actors who can commit to this kind of schedule.
Well the actors will be exhausted. I hope they stay healthy. Quality is an issue and the speed at which these movies are going to be made and distributed is alarming. It seems that Summit just wants to cash in. I at least hope they make the budget for both movies much, much bigger. Although I know the budget for New Moon is not huge. I hope Stephenie has more input, I wonder how she feel’s about this.
Seriously…sorry for the negativity, BUT I see this being a very bad thing.
HOPefully I wil be wrong, but these movies are just going to get worse and worse…
I cant believe they are not going to take their time. MOst of the fans though are just like “wow I won’t have to wait.”
I am more than happy to wait, they take their time with the HP movies, I wait patiently and am Happily rewarded. This will not be the case with these movies.
This entire series is amazing and Stephenie Meyer wrote the best series of books i have ever read. It appeals to so many people and i think true fans would wait however long it takes as long as the end result was true to the theme of the books. I don’t think anyone wants these projects rushed just to do it. Twilight was an amazing start i hope they only get better as they make the latter books.
I agree with unbearable - let’s cross our fingers for the LOTR effect. Those sequels just kept getting better! The advantage was they filmed all Lord of the RIngs films in the span of like 13 months…I would hate for them to rush it and then screw it up, but the actors aren’t getting any younger. I’m sure they will figure something out….Maybe Catherine Hardwicke can take Eclipse! It can be tag team action for Chris and Catherine!
They have a new director for Eclipse but the screen writer is still the same with New Moon as it was for Twilight and I hope it is better. Twilight would have been better if I hadn’t read the books already but I feel that Katherine Hardwick left a lot of important details and parts out. Can’t wait to see New Moon, I hear Crish Weitz said he is going to keep it as close to the book as he can. Love to see the book come to life for once.
They have to do it fast because Edward is ageless as a vampire as a actor he is not….
