MTV MOVIES BLOG: TAYLOR LAUTNER COMES UP SHORT?
Along with their report and response to Chris Weitz being officially named the director of ‘New Moon’, MTV’s Larry Carrol noticed something a little off in the official synopsis that Summit provided for ‘New Moon’.
Read below to find out what it is:
The release also offered, for the first time, the studio’s official synopsis for the sequel: “In ‘New Moon,’ Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) is devastated by the abrupt departure of her vampire love, Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) but her spirit is rekindled by her growing friendship with the irresistible Jacob Black. Suddenly she finds herself drawn into the world of the werewolves, ancestral enemies of the vampires, and finds her loyalties tested. Production on ‘New Moon’ is scheduled to begin in the coming months and the studio is planning to release the film towards the end of 2009 or early 2010.”Sharp-eyed Twilighters may have noticed that although Stewart and Pattinson’s name appears in the synopsis after their characters, Taylor Lautner’s does not. This can’t be welcomed news for the 16-year-old star of the first film, particularly following on the heels of concerns that he’s too small to continue playing Jacob, and rumors that other actors are being considered as replacements.

I’m not going to lie, I didn’t even stop to notice that they didn’t include Taylor’s name. But now that Larry pointed it out, it does sort of worry me. I’d just like to hear confirmation one way or another so we can all stop speculating and worrying.

Taylor IS Jacob Black
I don’t want Taylor being replaced.
Why?
Because:
1) To replace an actor who plays one of the main roles in the series is a HUGE mistake.
2) Jacob and Edward are the characters with the largest fanbases in the series. Changing Jacob’s face now would be as wrong as changing Edward’s. They just can’t do it.
3) The fans relate Taylor’s face with the character, and if they replace him, the character in “New Moon” won’t be Jacob at all.
4) We want someone in the role who can actually act. We don’t want a huge guy with lots of muscles that cannot portray properly the character in the big screen.
5) Taylor is Jacob. There’s no other way to say this. He is the character. The gestures, the smile, the voice, the behaviour… He’s just great as Jacob.
I think it will be a bad day, if Taylor is not in New Moon….
But perhaps we’re over thinking this….this isn’t concrete yet, is it?
I noticed it but I’ve been nervously awaiting them to make some kind of official announcement. I just read where that other guy ??? was saying that he had the part of older Jacob??!!
This is my HUNCH: They’re going to keep Taylor in until the part where he, Bella and Mike go see the horror movie - ya know when Mike starts hurling at the theatre? - Then they’ll switch to a new Jacob because she writes how different he is and how much taller he is when she camps out in front of his house.
I really hope they keep taylor for the part of jacob in new moon. he was so perfect in twilight! as for him being too small… well, come on, isn’t that why we call it movie magic? if you can make robbie coltrane a giant in harry potter, for example, you should surely be able to make taylor look 7 ft tall. i say you follow taylor’s advice and dig all the other characters in a ditch. And then of course there’s makeup to make everything else look older. If summit would just cough up some more money, maybe these tasks would be possible. And even if you did get another actor, you’d still probably have to do some tweaking. And taylor just has the character down so well, and that almost matters more to me then making him the appropriate height. in so many of those new moon fan vids, there are clips of steven straight as jacob, which although he looks the part, and is totally hot, i’ve seen him in the covenant, and not such a good actor. i realize he’s probably not even in the running for the part, but do we want to take the risk of getting a terrible actor to replace taylor who does such a fantastic job? i am totally team taylor!

Well theoretically they shouldn’t be officially casting anyone who isn’t a total lock until a director is in place. Now that Chris is official, I’m sure we will be hearing about Jacob casting soon.
My 2¢: I really hope they keep Taylor…even if they can’t make him appear quite as tall as he should be. Anyone dedicated enough to the project to put on 16 pounds of muscle to try to maintain the role even when New Moon was still only a possibility is an asset to the film. He nailed the part in his scenes in Twilight and I would be genuinely sad to see him go.

Taylor did such an awesome job being bespelled by Bella in Twilight and not liking Edward. As I continued reading the books I couldn’t help but picture Pattinson and Lautner as Edward and Jake. I won’t be so into the second one if Jake is different especially considering he’s a main focus in New Moon.
Plus don’t make the same mistake “The Dark Knight” movie made when they changed Rachel.

I don’t want to see Taylor replaced. In fact, I really don’t want any of the cast replaced including his Native American friends. We all the know the characters as they were in Twilight. Many fans, including myself, will be upset if the cast is changed. I agree with Leticia, it would be like changing Bella or Edward. Ths is Summit’s chance to make money and put their name out there. They start messing with what the fans want, they’re going to lose in the end.

i really really really hope they do not replace taylor. i honestly hate when movies do that because it just, i really don’t know how to explain it, but it really just bugs me to no end. but, i just went on imdb.com and i looked up taylor lautner and it says he IS in new moon playing jacob black. i mean, i trust imdb.com like nothing else, but can we know for sure that its true because of all these articles of speculation? just a thought.
I understand why they want to replace him–Jacob becomes muscular (and hot) and a LOT taller during New Moon. I can see Taylor playing Jacob in the beginning, but then if they switched actors mid-movie, that would be disastrous, but worse if they didn’t. So personally, I think I’d be okay with a new actor–saddened, yes, but Taylor is what? 16? He’ll be in other movies.
On another note, I loathed Twilight and was so happy they found a new director. Hopefully he’ll make better desicions or the budget will be higher…
I think some of the reason why they want to replace him is because….well, let’s face it. The small, two lines they gave him in Twilight didn’t serve him much justice. They want to replace him because of that. They haven’t seen what he can do. He’s older. He’s not Shark Boy any more! Give him a chance!
who cares about his size. In lord of the rings the man who played Gimli is like 7 feet tall and they made him into a dwarf. So they can make Taylor tall. And it will just throw everything off, when i think of Jacob i think Taylor. If they want to replace him fine but it will piss a lot of people off.

huh, guess I’m the only one who was entirely upset by Taylor’s casting in the first place. I’ll be fine either way….if they replace him or not. The thing is, he’s too short. It’s part of the story…his height…he’s supposed to be taller than Edward. If he’s this little tiny boy, he’s gonna be one tiny wolf. I was really disappointed they cast him in the first place. If they keep him, it will look pretty stupid, but it will flow from the first movie. If they replace him, it will make New Moon better, but it will have a small disconnect from the first movie. Either way, FAIL. He should never have been cast in the first place.
I don’t think he’s going to be replaced. Remember, ALL main characters are signed on for at least three movies that includes Taylor. Plus on IMDB, under the New Moon Overview/Cast, Taylor’s name is there. Relax guys.

Taylor is Jacob. He has already “imprinted” on the fans. He is an actor with great range - he can play fun loving, but also moody and dark - check out MY OWN WORST ENEMY. I think this would be like recasting Ron Weasley in HP - once the part was Rupert Grints it stays his, even if he doesn’t grow up to “fit the part” as the books describe, the movie audience identifies with the actor. Are they thinking of recasting the Cullens, most of the actors don’t fit the books description. Summit probably wants to save money because Taylor is under age and can’t be work long hours on set. Shame on Summit and new director Chris Weitz if they follow through with recasting.
Okay…although I MAY start warming up to the idea of Chris Weitz, I don’t think I ever will warm up to the idea if they ever replace Taylor! NO! They can’t! Taylor did such an amazing job capturing Jacob’s infectious personality, even with the few lines he did have, I mean he nailed it, in my opinion. And have you seen the boy lately? If you look at pictures of him from just even September and you look at pictures of him now, the boy has SERIOUSLY bulked up! I met him in the Twilight tour and let me tell you, what a body! Plus, isn’t Chris known for his special effects experience? I mean just look at The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, look what they did to Brad Pitt! That’s AMAZING! If cheap-scape Summit puts more money towards this they will be able to pull off anything. I hope Chris realizes this.
I’m going to agree with Anna. They never should have cast him in the first place. I don’t think they need someone huge and muscular, but I do think that he’s far to baby-faced to be Jacob. I also think that the wigs were ridiculous. I don’t think it’s such a huge deal to replace him, either. He’s not a HUGE part of the first movie. He only had a couple of scenes.
This is nothing against Taylor. He’s adorable and charming. That might be a part of the problem.
I noticed right away Taylor’s name wasn’t mentioned. I will be truly dissapointed if Jacob is re-cast for New Moon considering I adored Taylor’s performance in Twilight.
They knew they wanted this to be a franchise, so why did they cast him in the first place then? You can not mess with the cast! Not now.
I am not a teen girl in love with Taylor and I will still go see New Moon regardless, but I think they NEED to keep Taylor. He is hot and he can act. After seeing the movie 5 times now, I like him more than I did at first. I know Tayor can pull this off and Summit needs to cough up more money to ensure the wolf effects will work and if Taylor needs a little CGI help, they should have no problem with that.
Taylor did so much to promote Twilight and made everyone he met fall in love with him. He’s also great at interviews. Keep him!
Taylor Lautner is darling, BUT, he is too young/small to play the werewolf Jacob. If you read the books, you will remember the amazing transformation he makes not only in size, but maturity. Taylor simply doesn’t have the physical presence described.
I looked up Michael Copon (mentioned somewhere as a possible replacement). He looks a lot like Taylor, only older, bigger, and sexier. Hmmm

First the director, now this… They want to screw it up big time don’t they? Taylor should grow up with his character, it would be perfect… I hate Jacob’s character personally but I think Taylor is the perfect Jacob… He’ll be 17 years old, just but him to the gym working hard and with some good camera technyques he should be ready
Ok. Well, when I first heard that Taylor Lautner was playing Jacob Black in Twilight, I was not thrilled because he is NOT who I imagined Jacob to be. After watching a few interviews and watching Twilight, he convinced me that he can play Jacob (or at least the playful fun loving Jacob; I don’t know about the serious Jacob, I’m still on the fence about that). But that would be a sad day if they decided to move Taylor out, not only because he’s got so many fans who love him but because we all know that Taylor would be the one most affected by this. I’m sure he wants this so bad and to take it away from him, is just wrong. And about the whole height thing, Robbie Coltrane, who plays Hagrid in the Harry Potter movies, is supposed to be half-giant,half-human, and they’ve done wonders with that in every of the HP movies to date. Watch LOTR when they’ve had to make Elijah Wood the size of a child to play a hobbit. So, I’m sure that should be no problem.
BUt if they would do that anyway, at least keep him until the “movie theatre” scene and come up with another actor when Bella looks for him at his home. At least, I don’t think would be too bad.
Ok, I hope that no one kills me for this: I think Taylor is a bit…well…feminine to play Jacob. Jacob is supposed to appear manly and the ultimate “man”. I think Taylor’s voice is entirely too high pitched and his gestures are well, a bit “Just Jack”. I think Taylor got a bit big for his britches, especially because Jacob does do a total transformation. They didn’t even include his growth spurt in Twilight. I think Taylor has the exact body type Edward should have (lean, wiry, muscular) but not the post-transformation Jacob body (ripped, towering over EVERYONE, intimidating).
I agree with Anna. A recast will make the new direction for New Moon complete.

I agree with the girl who said that they’ll probably have Taylor in it until the night with the movie date with Jacob, Bella, and Mike. If so does anyone else notice how well Steven Strait would be perfect for the part? Yeah, I kind of agree with Adrienne. I always thought Jacob was more rough around the edges, funny, and carefree with his shaggy hair and cut off jeans. Lautner was great for the first film but I think Jacob should be replaced with a more mature looking actor. Remember, by book 3 Jake says he’s the physical size of a 25 year old. So the actor has to potray a teeneagers mind in a clumbsy adults body. Now I have guilt, Taylor seemed so excited during the interviews….aww, Im a mean fan.
Only direction that New Moon appears to be going into is in the ground, I mean good God the characters are teenagers not a bunch of thrity year olds. What major series changed one of the main characters and was successful, Harry Potter does not count and Dark Knight well the character died anyway. People keep saying he’s not big enough, he’s not tall enough, he’s not thirty. I didn’t see Emmett’s curls,Jasper’s southern accent, Alice wasn’t exactly petite like a pixie or what not and Edward is American, but I guess that doesn’t matter only the Taylors’s physical apperance. Why is he the only person getting fired if the rumors are true? People keep saying replacing him with Steven Strait, where is his russet skin? Jacob is suppose to be younger than Bella anyway why turn this movie into a typical cliche with people way past their prime playing teenagers in a movie to appeal to teenagers.
If you wonderful Twilighters will check out IMDB (one of the best sites in the world that isn’t Twilight themed) Taylor is listed in the New Moon cast. You just have to have the Pro version which I got just to get more info on New Moon.

Because Taylor was only in 3-4 scenes throughout the entire movie, Summit might have been able to get away with recasting Jacob… IF they had done so much publicity for Taylor as Jacob. I say if they weren’t sure he was actually going to continue as Jacob to actually STAR in this one, they #1: should have cast the character more carefully and #2: not drawn so much attention to the character.
Honestly, recasting him now would be an insult. To him, to those who cast him in the first place, and most importantly to the fans.
Keep Taylor and give him a chance.
And Summit, stop worrying about box office numbers and do this movie properly rather than taking advantage of the fact that it’s almost a guaranteed hit, crappy or not.

He’s too short and small to play Jacob. in New Moon, Jacob is supposed to be taller, bigger, even older than Edward. Taylor can’t pull it off. his performance in Twilight is so-so. I (pretty much fully) agree with Terry, because everyone bags out series that have re-casted main characters, and honestly, WHO CARES if he is not quite tall enough, or not wuite muscle-y enough? I think,and its quite obvious, that by just looking at this page, he has a major amount of fans and not many people (AT ALL) will be happy if he is re-casted. Honestly. They really cant replace him. I LOVE taylor as Jacob and New Moon WILL NOT be the same unless he is in it. Its just impossible to find some one that fits the part of Jacob better than Taylor Launter. You have portrayed him as jacob for so long not it is just not right. Summit you need to know to respect you fans. And so what if Taylor is to short its called computer processing for gods sake! If you replace Jacob “New Moon” just will not be the same. It’s just like changing Bella, Edward, or any of the other Cullens. They have grown on us adoring fans. Just think about how your profits will fall if you don’t have Taylor as Jacob. It’s like replacing Ron Weasley in Harry Potter just because Rupert Grant doesn’t look how he is “supposed” to look when he is older, it’s just not right. Jacob is as much as a main character as Bella or Charlie you just can’t change the face of the person and think it is going to be fine. Taylor knows what he is doing and if you fix him up a little with computers i bet he will be perfect at playing the part. Summit he IS the face of Jacob all the twilight fans know that.
Taylor was ok in Twllight. In New Moon he is suppose to be taller and bigger. However, it wouldn’t be right to change any of the casts. I’m not sure if New Moon would do well if that happened. You are making a HUGE mistake, Summit. Taylor Lautner IS Jacob. All fans see him as Jacob, and no one else. Everything about him is Jacob, his smile, face, teeth, and VOICE! You better keep him in the movie, or many many thousands or millions of fans will be disappointed. Me and my some hundred friends have agreed to even GO ON A HUNGER STRIKE so Taylor can play Jacob. And we will, if you don’t keep him in the film. We love him dearly. Plus, I know about 500 people that have said they will refuse to see New Moon if Taylor does not appear in it as Jacob Black. And they are speaking the truth. So, Summit, you’re making a tremendous mistake. I assure you that the fan base will go down, the money made, the advertisement , and so much more. I INSIST you keep him in. Don’t make that terrible mistake. I for one, WILL REFUSE to see New Moon. And that is hard for me to say because I am a hard core obsessed twilight fan. And I have seen the film twilight 11 times total, and have read each book in the series 7 times each. Give Taylor a chance. I know you won’t regret it if you keep him in. Lautner is PERFECT for the role. He’s a very important part of the Twilight family now.

im a stubborn person and i say taylor will be in New Moon. however, i also have evidence to back myself up. first off, is it true that if u sign on to do a movie, u sign the contract and u r set to do this movie?? if so, go to www.imdb.com and search ‘taylor lautner’…scroll down to filmography and see that he’s set to do new moon! im willing to bet my next paycheck that he’s playing jacob for new moon. i also agree with everyone that said that changing Jacob’s face would make new moon a disaster! the only way to recast a major character (in my point of view) is if the actor has died! like they did in harry potter! richard harris played dumbledore for the first 2 movies. soon after the 2nd was released, he died, so they hired michael gambon!

The reason they cast Taylor for Twilight was because he looked like a YOUNG Jacob but we all know Twilight Jacob and New Moon Jacob are different and there for require different actors.
Don’t get me wrong even though he was good in Twilight in no way can he pull off looking like a grown a** man in his twenties, sorry but he can tell he looks sixteen. I mean putting Taylor against Rob in a love triangle is kinda laughable, we need a grown man to play Jacob.
They have to replace him. Jacob ages too quickly and ends up looking like he’s in his 20’s. It would be stupid to keep Taylor in the part because he’s too young.

Thats stupid, you can’t just replace an actor who plays a character thats so major in the books, once they casted Taylor he was Jacob. I refuse to go see New Moon if Taylors not in it. They made Hagrid taller in Harry Potter so why can’t they make Taylor taller in New Moon??? If they do replace him their gonna have to deal with the backlash of it. Its true though, hardly any of the Cullen’s fit their description, so why is Taylor the exception???? They should really check the consequences before making a desicion.
When i saw the first movie i saw that everyone was well casted with the exception on Jacob Black. I didnt know much of the movie but i knew that Taylor did not fit that part and he needed to be replaced. Now knowing a bit of the story Taylor should have never been casted to be Jacob. I think a more swell guy with a more of a tough guy look should be Jacob because Werewolfs are huge and scary so the guy to play the role has to be able to fit that. I would think a 5′9 to 5′11 native american or hispanic with that look should play the part. Maybe an unknown actor should get the part so the part can really come alive.

The height and him looking 25 doesn’t do anything to the plot of New Moon. The movie can still stay true to the book w/o Jacob growing to be 6′7″ tall and looking 25.

wow. this is a little ridiculous. not going to see the movie just because one character might change? really come on now. this isn’t the Jacob story, it’s about Bella and Edward. Personally i thin Taylor fit the part in Twilight but in this next movie he changes a lot. Jacob is supposed to get bigger in size, his voice gets deeper, a lot changes. If they do change actors they should have Steven Strait play Jacob. He fits the role and plus on the Stephanie Meyer website she posted her “dream cast” and she chose Steven Strait as her favorite Jacob.
I don’t really like swapping of leads in movies, but with Jacob its almost inevitable. It isn’t really the problem that he isn’t tall enough, he just doesn’t look old enough. Remember, Jacob was a 16 year old who looked like a 20 year old, and Taylor is a 16 year old who actually kind of looks like a 14 year old. It’s okay for the first movie and maybe the beginning of the second movie, but after that…I don’t know. For his sake, I hope he gets a growth spurt sometime between now and then.

As far as the question of Team Hardwicke or Team Weitz is concerned, I remain Team Switzerland — most likely until I hear that Team Weitz is in fact protecting the plotlines of New Moon - my favourite book of the series - and that Stephenie Meyer is as happy with Weitz as she was with Hardwicke. As far as the question of replacing Taylor Lautner is concerned, I remember reading that it took a long time to find Lautner. Personally, I don’t like it when franchise actors are replaced in subsequent films, but here, Jacob changes so much, it could fit. There are probably CGI effects to help in the rapid ‘bulking up’ process (he grows to 6′7′’ in the books in less than a year), but Summit isn’t putting up much of a budget increase for New Moon.
Personally, I think Taylor is a good actor but he should be replaced because he doesn’t have the physical requriements to play Jacob in the other films. Someone should have thought this prior to casting him. I remember seeing his picture before Twilight opened…my friends and I felt he was cute but not really muscular enough. It’s just not going to look good if they use special effects to make him grow from 5′9″ to 6′7″ AND he has to look 25 years old.
I suspect he may have known this was coming. I noticed he has been very sensitive in some of his recent interviews when asked about his age and was hesitant in responding to the question. It might also explain why he was rude to Rob on the Trya Banks show…I was a bit surprised at his agressive reaction to Rob’s question about dating more than one girl at a time…a bit over the top. It was clear he was feeling sensitive about things and this could explain why.
Yes, he’s listed on IMDB as being in New Moon but that doesn’t mean it’s a done deal.

I’m very conflicted about this. On one hand, I really like Taylor. I think he did a superb job of Jacob in Twilight (for the 2 lines he had,
) and he really looks the part. And I’m pretty sure they could make him look as bulky, either through camera angles (similar to what they did in Lord of the Rings for the actors who played hobbits) or through digital enhancement (which kind of creeps me out, and has the ability to be really cheesy). On the other hand, I really think that Taylor is his natural form isn’t New Moon Jacob. He’s just so little and cute, and he looks about 14.

Okay, I admit that I most likely will cry if he’s not Jacob in New Moon. They can’t change him now! I honestly wouldn’t care if he was still small, he could wear platform shoes for all I care! A POINT TO BE MADE. If you look at the scenes with Bella and Jacob….he is alot bigger then her. Kristen is small so Taylor looks bigger then he really is. And the boy is built - he is into all those martial arts PLUS he IS a great Jacob Black. They will have a lot of pissed off fans if they re-cast him. He’s PERFECT ! And of course there won’t be the same “chemistry” there was with Edward…there’s not SUPPOSED TO BE !

This would be a very stupid mistake. He was cast as Jacob & now he IS Jacob! I think Taylor made a great Jacob Black. (I’m totally team Edward all the way, but I think they should keep him!) And if they weren’t planning on him being Jacob why did they have him doing all the publicity w/the other actors? I don’t know what Summit is doing! Changing the actors for a main character from movie to movie is stupid!
The other actors don’t exactly look like how their characters are descrbied in the book either. I’m sure some things can be done to make him look more muscular & bulky. Summit should consider the fans!
OMG! Taylor is so awesome for Jacob, and they shouldn’t out him. All they have to do is a little special effects! Taylor was not what I had pictured at all for Jacob and I certainly can not imagine him as a more “manly” Jacob the werewolf in New Moon. In Twilight he just seemed far to young for the part he didn’t even sound as if his voice had changed yet. Honestly his voice was much higher pitched than Bella/Kristen. Taylor is obviously a very talented young man but I think for New Moon to succeed in giving us that intense chemistry between Bella and Jacob, the kind of intensity that makes us wonder if she can get over Edward, then the studio will definately need to fill the role with an actual man. I’m sorry but a boyish, all thought terribly cute, Taylor just doesn’t fit the role for the Jacob Black we need in New Moon.

I never liked Taylor as Jacob, from the moment I found out he was Jacob. I was mad that Sharkboy was going to be in Twilight. Nobody kill me… He’s just not how I pictured him. At all. Although I don’t like him as Jacob, I would hate it if they recast him. The movie just wouldn’t be right. Hopefully with Chris directing the movie, they’ll have a bigger budget and better CGI. So, although Taylor’s not my Jacob, I say keep him.
Taylor IS Jacob!!!! He IS sunshine!!! Infact he was the only one I felt they casted perfectly!!
